Subject: [*] AutoClock 1.44; a clock setting utility
What is AutoClock ?
AutoClock is an application and a system extension that maintains the
accuracy of your Macintosh clock. As a matter of fact, this clock has the
tendency to deviate from the correct time every day, and can accumulate to
minutes or dozens of minutes after one year, if not corrected.
The AutoClock application allows you to:
* set the clock by calling a time server, if you have a modem,
* set the clock manually from an accurate source (for example a voice time
server (303-499-7111) or the radio),
* display a logbook of every clock change on your Macintosh, whether it was
done with AutoClock, or with another application (the General or Data &
Time control panels, or the Clock desk accessory for example),
* compute the mean clock deviation of the Macintosh clock for a 24-hour
period, using data recorded in the logbook, and
* display the date and time in almost any country of the world.
The system extension AutoClock Extension can:
* periodically open the AutoClock application according to your schedule,
to perform an automatic clock adjustment by calling the time server,
without any user intervention,
* keep the Macintosh clock continually correct, by adjusting it using the
computed mean clock deviation,
* automatically adjust the clock for Daylight Saving Time, and
* detect any clock changes done by any other programs, and record them in
the application's logbook.

Program: CalConvert 1.2
Author: Alessandro Levi Montalcini ([email protected])
Price: $5 cash (shareware)
FAT VERSION - CONTAINS BOTH 680x0 AND NATIVE POWERPC CODE
CalConvert is a small shareware utility that does integer
arithmetic calculations and converts integer values to
different bases (decimal, hexadecimal, binary, octal or any
custom base between 2 and 32) or to an OSType (a sequence of
four ASCII characters). The conversion may be signed or
unsigned (you can always enter a signed value, it gets
converted to unsigned if needed); the result may be
interpreted either as a word (2 bytes) or as a long word (4
bytes). CalConvert has arithmetic, logical and bitwise
operators.
New in version 1.2:
- includes both 68000 and native PowerPC code
- fixes a few nonstandard interface behaviors

*** THIS FILE IS A REPLACEMENT FOR CONTROL STRIP PATCHER 1.0
*** IF YOU ALREADY PATCHED CONTROL STRIP SUCCESSFULLY, YOU DON'T NEED IT
The Control Strip Patcher patches (i.e. modifies) Apple's new neat-o keen
Control Strip control panel so that it can be used on plain Jane Macs.
The version that ships with the Powerbook 500's will not work on desktop
Macs. I created The Control Strip Patcher to "fix" Control Strip and remove
this limitation.
Control Strip (patched or not) needs System 7 to run. Control Strip itself
is NOT included in this archive.
This version (1.1) patches Control Strip with versions 1.0, 1.0.1, 1.1b1
and 1.1b2.

Subject: [*] DropShell 2.0; C source code for an application
DropShell 2.0 - July 1st 1994
by Leonard Rosenthol, Marshall Clow, and Stephan Somogyi
DropShell is a collection of C source files that allow you to easily build
your own System 7-style drop-box applications.
Basic Features
DropShell consists of four source files and five header files that are
designed to let you quickly add your own application's functionality
without having to change the DS sources themselves much.
DropShell implements support for dragging files and folder onto the
application's icon via AppleEvents - it doesn't cheat and use the System 6
compatibility provided by System 7. DropShell is also a fully factored
application - it performs its work by sending AppleEvents to itself. This
also allows an application built on DropShell to be "recorded" by an
OSA-compatible scripting system.
DropShell handles a simple user interface including a splash screen, a
"Select File..." option and complete balloon help for all menus and
dialogs.

FaberFinder is Yet Another MiniFinder.
Has "a lot" of features, though it is only 3K (the power of
good old assembler). Read the enclosed note for details.
FaberFinder needs the Hierarchical File System (HFS).
It works (at least) on my old, faithful Mac Plus under System 1.1,
2.0, 4.0, 4.3, 6.0.2, 6.0.8; you can use it under System 7.0
or later, but System 7 is not fully supported: you cannot
launch desk accessories from the directory dialog box, for
instance.
FaberFinder may be useful for emergency disks, where space is
at a premium.
Read the enclosed note to learn more.
The updated note explains how to obtain a safer bootable disk
using ResEdit instead of a boot block editor.
Enjoy yourself and remember the $5 shareware fee!

Subject: [*] Keep It Up 1.2; keeps an application running through errors
Keep It Up version 1.2 (c) by Karl Pottie
Are you tired of getting the "The Application xxx has unexpectedly quit
because an error of type zz occurred" message ? Are you depending on this
application to keep running at all times, even when you're away ? Then you
should investigate "Keep It Up" (KIU), the new utility by the author of
Autoboot.
What does Keep It Up do ?
KIU watches certain applications and monitors if they are still running. If
an application no longer runs because it "unexpectedly quit" or because the
user quit it, KIU will attempt to relaunch this application (and open
certain documents) or restart the computer. This will ensure that your
application is always running and available. KIU can also restart your Mac
at certain scheduled moments in time.
Version 1.2 changes
* You can now specify 2 periods during which KIU will not attempt to launch
any applications. This is useful for people who need some applications to
quit for a certain period of time (e.g. a BBS application needs to quit
when the computer communicates with other nodes to transfer mail). Read the
new "KIU Scheduling" section in the manual.
* KIU can now restart your Mac at certain scheduled moments in time. This
feature can for example be used to prevent memory fragmentation in your
server.
* the initial launch of applications does not increase the 'number of
launches before restart' counter.
* several bug fixes.
* documentation: how to use Quickeys and KIU to perform certain actions
after an application is (re)launched
* reduced shareware fees.
Keep It Up is $25 shareware.
Non commercial distribution is unlimited. KIU may be put onto the info-mac
CD ROM. You may upload this archive to all internet ftp sites and online
services like AOL, Compuserve, NiftyServe, etc.. (volunteers wanted

Program: MediaSizer 1.2
Author: Alessandro Levi Montalcini ([email protected])
Price: free - (C)1994 UpWare by Silene s.r.l.
FAT VERSION - CONTAINS BOTH 680x0 AND NATIVE POWERPC CODE
MediaSizer is a small utility that computes the actual
size of any number of files or folders on any media. It is
very useful for creating CD-ROMs and other write-once disks
that have large allocation block sizes. The allocation block
size is the minimum space taken up by any file that is
written to a disk; the larger the disk, the larger the
allocation block size.
SyQuest cartridges, for example, have a much smaller
allocation block size than a CD-ROM; this means that if you
have lots and lots of small files on your cartridges, they
may not fit on a CD-ROM even though their total size is
smaller than the size of the CD-ROM. This happens because
each file takes at least 9.5K on a CD-ROM, even if it's only
a few bytes long.
New in version 1.2:
- includes both 68000 and native PowerPC code
- fixed menu keys and documentation

1-800-555-1212 doesn't actually list all 800 numbers; it is run by
Southwestern Bell and they demand over $10,000/year to list a number, so
most 800 numbers are missing.

Subject: [C] Trick to improve color for qt moovs on 8 bit macs
If you've seen some really beautiful 16 or 24 bit quicktime moovs on someone
else's expensive Mac, and you've seen really beautiful GIF images on your own
piddling 8 bit Mac (256 colors), and you whish you could get the quality of
the later when viewing the former (and you don't mind run-on sentences), then
you've come to the right posting!
This is a simple trick that anyone can do to improve the color of quicktime
moovs on a mac that can only display 256 simultaneous colors. It doesn't
always work, and sometimes it makes them look much worse. But there are lots
of moovs out there that it does help, and hey - it's free!
Background (experienced graphics people can skip this):
Color Macs can actually display over 16 million colors. The trouble is that
due to memory limitations, many Macs can only display 256 of these at one
time. The reason that GIFs look so good even if you only have 256 colors is
that they come with a custom color palate. This means that they can contain
any 256 colors from the full palate, not just the standard 256 system colors.
You may notice that when you display a nice GIF, things in the background
like your desktop pattern and some of your icons will have messed up colors.
Lots of really nice pictures only have a few hundred colors in them just by
chance. For example, if you had a picture of a six pack of Coke cans, you
would need many shades of red and grey, but if your background was just
white, you might not need anything else. Thus, it would be possible for the
Coke cans to appear with the same quality in 256 colors as they would in 16
million color mode.
The problem with quicktime:
Lots of quicktime movies don't need more than a few hundred colors to look
perfect. As with GIFs, you ought to be able to get these movies to look
nearly top quality even with only 256 colors, simply by using a custom color
palate. Ideally, if you changed the palate with every frame, you would be
able to get qt moovs to look as good as GIFs. Unfortunately, that's too much
work, and qt would be unusably slow. So, Apple just uses the standard 256
color palate, and picks the best matches it can.
The theory:
If you have a quicktime moov that over the course of its life doesn't use
more than a few hundred colors, you should be able to pick a color palate
that is customized for the colors that the moov as a whole uses. Then the
moov would look much better than it did under the standard 256 system colors.
It would be much closer to it's ideal 24 bit appearance, especially if the
colors the moov uses are very different from the standard palate (which is
usually the case).
The method:
Well, you CAN pick a custom palate to display quicktime moovs! And thanks to
readily available tools, a wonderful operating system, and a system
limitation
GIFs (e.g. GifConverter, available at Sumex) will customize the color palate
according to whatever image they are currently displaying. All you need to do
is get a picture that has a color palate that is appropirate for the movie,
display it in the graphics program, then simultaneously play the movie.
But where can you get a picture with a good color palate? Every frame in the
moov you are viewing can be used as such a picture. Most qt moovs are stored
in 24 bit color, regardless of the system that they will be viewed on. When
you copy a frame from the moov to the clipboard (just fast forward to the
frame, go to Edit, and select Copy), MoviePlayer copies the picture in 24
bit color even if it is displaying it in only 8 bit color. You can then paste
it into a graphics application, and most apps will customize the color palate
on the spot to give you the best 256 colors for displaying that picture.
Ok, the procedure:
(I'll use GifConverter as the example graphics app)
1. Open the moov.
2. Open GifConverter.
3. Find a frame in the moov that is a good sample of what colors the moov
needs.
4. Copy it to the clipboard.
5. In GifConverter, select New from the File menu
6. Paste the frame into the new GifConverter document. (GifConverter will
adjust the color palate).
7. Switch directly to MoviePlayer and watch the moov (don't go through the
finder).
-- The moov will be shown with the current color palate instead of the
standard one.
When you switch directly from the graphics app to MoviePlayer, the system
doesn't reinstall the standard color palate (that's the application's
responsability, and MoviePlayer doesn't bother). If you switch to the finder,
it may try to readjust the palate. Just go back to the graphics app, and then
make the switch directly (e.g. by clicking on the moov window).
The limitations:
Some moovs have drastic scene changes with very different sets of colors. If
this happens, you probably won't be able to get a frame that represents both
equally. The result is that the unrepresented scene will look much worse than
if you just played the moov straight. Other moovs just plain have too many
colors, and will look equally awful.
Side notes:
This only helps with the color related problem of 8 bit quicktime. The other
main issue is speed: The algorithm to display graphics in 16 bit or 24 bit
mode is much simpler because the system doesn't have to decide which color is
closest to the requested color. Theoretically, there should be no change in
speed between the standard palate and a custom palate. In practice, it may be
that the system is optimized for working with the standard palate, or it may
be that it is easier to work with an optimized palate. I couldn't tell either
way.
Have fun, and feel free to send questions or comments!
-Avram
Disclaimers:
1) Yes, I know that GIF's aren't the only images that take advantage of
custom palates
2) I omitted all discussion of dithering for the sake of simplification
3) I can't imagine any way that anyone could cause any harm by doing this,
but if you come up with one, it's not my fault.

Hello Jon,
Okay flame away, I reversed MungeImage and MountImage. Below you'll find a copy
of the original e-mail I sent to MacWeek. You'll notice that I did not include
Peter Lewis as the sole author, I didn't mention the author. I suppose MacWeek
added that for completeness.
I did read reports of both MungeImage and MountImage causing corrupted installs
in comp.sys.mac.* Usenet forums. MountImage was mentioned a lot more than the
other, but they were both blamed for bad installs. I should have caught this
before sending off my e-mail. I've used MountImage with bad results in the
past.
Henry Norr's replied to me that he has had problems with MungeImage, but
MountImage works for him. He went on to mention that he had "seen lots of
problem reports" about MountImage.
I'm sorry if you still feel that I have slighted Peter and Quinn. If the
program
is really as solid as you three seem to feel it is, I apologize to them. Hell,
I
apologize anyway since I was really more interested in talking about MountImage
rather than MungeImage, my error.
I didn't even think about the possiblity of my e-mail being printed in MacWeek
or I would have done a triple check on what I wrote (I did double check about
seeing complaints of both MungeImage and MountImage before sending my e-mail,
and they were still there). My mail wasn't sent to the letters section, but
rather directly to Henry Norr. No real excuse there though, I'll be more
careful
in the future.
So I apologize to Peter and Quinn in regards to their reputation and to Henry
for my letter that I should have checked again before sending.
Feel free to reply or ignore this note.

Hi Henry,
I have to agree with much of your 6/13/94 article in MacWeek. Apple does
indeed need to find a better way to both inform and deliver software updates to
its customers. As a HIgher Ed dealer we are always willing to provide our
customers with the updates when requested. But it would be nice if there was
someofficial way for the word to get out about new software rather than just
the
word-of-mouth approach that seems to happen today.
There were two items though I should that I should bring to your
attention. Apple does include Disk Copy with all Macintosh models that have an
internal CD-ROM. The program is on the CD that comes with the computer along
withdisk images for the system software. They have been including this since
the
Mac IIvx first came out.
Second and more importantly, using the programs MungeImage to install
software is a no-no. It often will corrupt the files being installed resulting
inan unreliable system. I believe MountImage has had the same problem, but I'm
not positive and I don't know about DiskDup+. Many people on the InterNet who
complained about System Update 3.0 creating problems with their system
used MungeImage to install the software.
Thanks,
Tony

>Where is the darn dialect? Any help deeply appreciated.
The key here is the versions.
The Script Editor 1.0.1 will not work with AppleScript 1.1.
If you get AS 1.0 legally and then download an AS 1.1 runtime (such as the
version that comes with PlainTalk) then you will not be able to edit
scripts because the SE 1.0.1 does not know where AppleScript stores its
system terminologies. In 1.1 these terminologies are in the Scripting
Additions folder in a folder called Dialects. In 1.0 the dialect was
stored in the AS file and the SE would look for them there. SE 1.1 asks
AppleScript for them and thus doesn't even know where they are.
So, the key is to ditch 1.0 and get 1.1 legally. The cheapest way is to
order the AppleScript Runtime Kit from APDA in the US (800) 282-2732, in
Canada (800) 637-0029, internationally at (716) 871-6555 or by fax (716)
871-6511. It runs $20 for the disk only which contains AS 1.1, the osaxen
and the Script Editor. There are several other more complete packages for
the less financially restricted.

This more a basic electrical question more than a Mac/computing
question. However, I don't know the answer and don't want to end
up shorting something out by experimenting.
I have a Mac and an external CD-ROM. I also have a pair of external
speakers that are plugged into the Mac's audio port. Sometimes I want
to play audio CDs through the speakers when I'm writing a paper or
whatever. I then usually pull the speaker wire from the mac and hook it
to the front of the CD-ROM (which, I'm told, is running a minor risk if
the Mac is on at the time).
Is there a way to hook both the CD-ROM and the Mac to the same pair of
speakers? Can you get sounds from both? Can this cause problems? Aside
from buying another pair of speakers, do I have another option than my
wire-switcha-roo trick?

This too is correct. In fact, most of the items in this init. string are
redundant specification of the defaults for &F1. I got it from
Microphone Pro, and don't know if Software Ventures is justified in
re-specifying them (it's just a precaution, according to a Tech. Support

&F1 is the important item here, as it sets the Supra to Factory defaults
for the Mac (as explained in another recent Info-Mac posting). The S11
register doesn't mean anything when you're still using pulse dialing (as
I am here in the backwoods of the Missouri Ozarks)!

A little ResEdit surgery on the Finder will do the job.
Open a copy of the Finder with ResEdit.
(Let's see, today's obligatory ResEdit warning is: Mamas, don't let your
babies grow up to be cowboys.)
Double click the "fmap" picker to open it.
SINGLE click fmap #17010 to select it.
>From the "Resource" menu, select "Open Using Hex Editor".
The first two lines on the right hand side of the hex editor
read:
TEXTttxt
PICTttxt
This is what tells the Finder to open plain text files (type:
TEXT) and pictures (type: PICT) with TeachText or SimpleText
(creator: ttxt).
Now I'm sure you see where this is going. To change the default
application, just change the creator code.
(To find the creator code for any application use "Get
File/folder Info" from ResEdit's "File" menu.)
For example: Tex-Edit (Sumex: text/tex-edit-241.hqx) has a
creator code of TBB5. (Creator codes are case sensitive.)
So to have Tex-Edit as your default editor, change TEXTttxt to
TEXTTBB5
In the same way, to have ClarisWorks (creator: BOBO) open PICTs
by default, change the second line from PICTttxt to PICTBOBO
(Yes, you can add additional defaults. For example, you can have
GifConvertor open GIFs. Place the insertion point just after the final
character in the second line. PICTttxt|

The newer PowerMacs/GeoPort Macs change this somewhat - they now support a
serial port rate of 230Kbps; and yes, I do mean asynchronously. Hayes'
latest release of SmartCom for the Mac uses an undocumented call to take
advantage of this higher rate. No other comm. program for the Mac that I
know of supports the 230Kbps rate at this time.
The higher rate would really only help someone who was transferring
uncompressed (text or TIF) files.

SOLUTION:
Make an alias of the Monitors control panel and put it in the Desk Accessories
folder. That way you can make changes very rapidly.
Also doing it that way saves you another init ou patch which we already have
enough of. louis [email protected]

I'm sure these are FAQs, but I've yet to find a satisfactory answer to this
question.
Is there a one-stop offline news reader? That is, a news reader that will
connect to an NNTP server, batch download all of my specified newsgroups,
disconnect, then allow me to read and batch up all my postings ready for the
next connection.
Secondly, is there an offline SMPT mailreader? The connection service I'm
using charges extra for POP, so I'm purely interested in SMPT. This
mailreader should hav the usual facilities such as aliasing and forwarding
etc.
Thanks in advance for any information,

Subject: Open (unconnected) cables at the end of a SCSI chain
I followed without comment the recent Info-Mac discussion about whether an
unconnected cable could be left at the end of a SCSI chain. I had done
this for a long time, without apparent problem, as others reported doing.
However, here's a new twist: A Work Group Server 9150, with its standard
"Super 300" internal CD-ROM drive, plus two of the same drives in their
external ("multimedia") forms, began to refuse to boot. Only the "Welcome
to Power Macintosh" banner would appear, with nothing happening
thereafter.
It was finally determined that the lock-up was occurring at the loading of
the Apple CD-ROM extension; removing this alone allowed the computer to
boot normally.
Previously, during server set-up, an external hard drive had been placed
at the end of the daisy chain, following the last CD-ROM drive.
Everything worked flawlessly. However, the 50-to-50 SCSI cable had been
left in place for future use, and this turned out to be the culprit:
Removing it subsequently allowed the computer to boot *with* the picky
extension re-installed.
The particular cable in question does not seem to be faulty in any way;
placing it unconnected either after a scanner or after a hard drive
(albeit on a IIci) causes no problems. Something about the CD-ROM....
Does anyone else have experience with this?

Subject: PB170 Wake-up Problems
Hello,
Thank you all who responded to my request for help with the PB170. After
spending considerable time puzzling over its inability to wake from sleep
without locking up - I have concluded that the problem does not seem to be
caused by extension or pref file conflicts, or by the system 3 update.
Rather, it seems to be caused by the driver software that came already
installed on the new Quantum 127MB 2.5" hard drive that I recently put in
the PB170. I re-formatted and installed an old driver that came with
another drive now retired, and the PB170 functions without any hiccups -
even with update 3 installed. The idea to try this possible solution was
suggested to me by Edgar ([email protected]). Thanks Edgar. And thanks
to those others who sent me advice and suggestions. And thanks to the
folks at Info-Mac for the information and the medium you provide.

Subject: problems with desktop colors
I am submitting the following on behalf of a colleague, any help would be
appreciated.
We are having a problem with Brown tn3270 (2.4a4 MacTCP version with
MacTCP 2.0.4 control panel) on Centris 650 and Quadra 660AVs.
The problem started after both AfterDark and Darkside were installed and
running on these machines. Obviously not smart, but was done by accident.
Both 16 and 14 inch monitors have similar problems.
Ever since, in a random fashion, logging off a VM host or quitting
tn3270 will cause the screen icons to change color or perhaps the
screen background (desktop) to change. I particularly notice it with the
blue screen with the two aqua dots. It changes back eventually
when logging off or quitting tn3270.
I have reinstalled the system and zapped PRAM with no luck though
not both at the same time. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have to get WAN up and running by the end of July. The server is a PPC

questions are:
1. Is anyone running the new Global Village modem for the Duo? How is it?
2. I anticipate having to use Timbuktu to allow me to run applications on
the server directly. Does this package allow me to in effect use system
resources on the host CPU to run the applications in host memory? Also,
will I be able to seamlessly access the printer hooked to the server?
3. Is anyone running some sort of scripting package that can dial up a SLIP

dial into my server late at night from across the country and pick up my
mail.

it's a 45 minute drive to the nearest 68000 machine, so I never tested it.
The final version will fix this and several more minor problems; it
should be released by or before July 9. In the meantime, if you have a

Logitech's works OK, and yes, there's an cdev. But it has a problem.
Basically you program the middle and right buttons to generate keycodes.
The keycodes, and this is the problem, include the *programmed* shift
keys (shift, ctl, cmd, opt) *as programmed*, not as you're holding down
when you click the mouse. In other words, if the right mouse button
generates unshifted right arrow, it does that even if you're holding shift
down. This is of course a problem with X, which tends to use various
combinations of shifts in combination with mouse clicks. This problem
has been reported to Logitech, but if there's been a response I haven't
seen it.

Regarding keyboard cables for the Mac Plus and 128/512,
a netter writes:
>Try a phone cable....the cable from the handset to the base..
>I think? Can anyone else confirm??
This is the kind of advice that keeps the resale value of keyboards
high. Not only will a telephone handset cable cable fail to work,
but using it typically fries a fairly expensive IC on the keyboard,
a chip that costs more to buy and install than a used keyboard.
Why? The wiring on the Apple keyboard cable is reversed with
respect to a phone handset cable. There are two ways to fix
this. One is to cut the phone cable in half and resplice; this
is difficult because the wires are tiny. A better way is to
cut off one of the modular connectors and install a new one
upside down with respect to the original; this requires access
to 4-position, 4-contact crimp connectors and a crimping tool.
Finally, one can buy a compatible cable from vendors such as
DigiKey ... it's called a "4-4 coil cord reversed"; a 5' cable
with silver insulation has part number H2443-05C-ND. DigiKey
has a $25 minimum order ... 1-800-DIGIKEY.

Subject: Why is fax faster than data?
2400 data/9600 fax modems compress their fax data. The protocols for
compressing data aren't the same as those for compressing fax. Lots of modems
have both, but 24/96 modems don't.
Black & white graphics are one of the easiest types of information to
compress. If you have fax capability, then make a document, and save it as a
fax (your software should allow that somehow - you should at least be able to
fax it to no one, and have it save the fax image). Then have your fax
software save the fax document as a 200dpi pict file. Finally, compress the
pict (with StuffIt, for example). You'll see that it gets at least 50%
smaller.
The compression algorithm for fax is optimized specifically for b&w graphics,
so it's not hard for it to approach 4:1 compression.
Personally, I've never seen a fax machine or a fax modem that can do fax at
faster than 14.4kbd. I'm not saying that they aren't out there, but I have a
19.2kbd modem, and it can only do 14.4kbd fax. I think the problem with fax
machines is that 1t 14.4kbd, the bottleneck is how fast you can digitize and
print, and the line speed is no longer an issue.
