Subject: [!] Who?

[Drum roll please... a new moderator!!!! -Bill, Gordon, and Liam]

Hello,

My name is Igor Livshits, and I am the acting archivist for Info-Mac. I
lead the Macintosh team at NCSA, and slowly meander through graduate
courses in secondary science curriculum and instruction at the University
of Illinois. I taught high school physics and chemistry after graduation,
but my hobby somehow turned into my current profession.

I recently got married and she asked me to mention how wonderful she is.
I agreed :)

I spend much time with Ellen (my wife), Nigel, Lev, Tolstoi, and Dunkin (a
boa and three leopard geckoes; Ellen named the last one after her favourite
donuts). Otherwise, when I am not being irradiated by the Mac CRTs, I play
wallyball and ultimate frisbee, camp, scuba, and canoe.

Igor

Subject: [*] binpump20; identifies formats and sorts files

Binary Pump 2.0 performs two functions: 1) File Identification and 2)
Filing.

File Identification sets the correct type and creator codes which are
normal to all Macintosh files. Files taken from the Internet or from
IBM PC type systems such as movies, sounds, or graphics usually will
not have the correct codes because they are from non-Macintosh
systems. Binary Pump thus, looks either at a) the files contents or b)
the fileUs file name extension to correctly setup the file for Macintosh
use. Binary Pump will also recognize and decode Macbinary files.

Filing is the organizational concept of placing certain files, in certain
folders. Binary Pump allows you to choose which files you would like
to move, duplicate, or alias to these folders through the use of file
attributes such as name, contents, date, type code, etcIBinary Pump
allows you to move files between different volumes (read the
manual before you do this though...).

All of Binary Pump's actions can be performed in the background.

The archive contains a comprehensive User's Guide in MS Word
format, containing an Index, Table of Contents, Pictures, and more.

Binary pump is a Fat-Binary; it runs natively on both 68K and
PowerMac systems.

Subject: [*] Cyclone 1.2; a shoot-them-up game

High Risk Ventures is proud to present our first shareware game! Cyclone
features way-cool graphics and sound, and addicting and challenging game play.
It's based on an old arcade game called Star Castle, in which you fly a
spaceship on a wrap-around screen, and attack an enemy base sitting in the
middle. The base protects itself with three rotating shield rings, you-
seeking mines, and a nasty plasma cannon. We've added a few things to the
original game, including weapons for your ship, shields, bonus points, a
challenge level, and more. There's also an 'original game' mode for those who
want to play the game as it was originally designed. Rated four joysticks by
Inside Mac Games magazine.

Subject: [*] Cyclone 1.2 Updater; a blast-them-into-oblivion game

This program will update Cyclone version 1.1 or version 1.1.1 to version 1.2.
If you have version 1.0, you'll have to either download the entire version 1.2
instead of this updater, or you'll have to update to version 1.1 or 1.1.1 and
then run this updater. Version 1.2 fixes a few minor bugs and adds a few
features. Enjoy!

Changes since version 1.1.1

Improved handling of a corrupted preferences file. If the file is corrupted,
instead of saying "Can't load a needed resource" and quitting, it will say the
prefs file is corrupted, then it will create a new one.

Tries to detect when a screen saver is active, and doesn't draw the spinning
ships on the info screens or prefs screen, etc. Unfortunately, it only works
with After Dark-compatible screen savers.

Added a sound that plays at the beginning of the loading process.

Now keeps track of the amount of time you have spent actually playing the game,
and shows it in the shareware banner on the high score screen if you haven't
registered, or on the contact info screen if you have. Also pops up a reminder
every now and then if you haven't registered.

Changed the serial number stuff a bit. Now shows your name, registration code
and system code on the registration screen if you haven't registered or the
contact info screen if you have.

Changed the registration and order form stuff. Updated the Space Madness ad.

Shows system code in error dialogs, so you can give us the system code (which
gives us vital information about your system) when reporting problems.

Added the 'Reduced game speed' option. If this option is on, the game will run
at about half it's normal speed. You might want to turn this option on for
young children, who don't have the hand-eye coordination it takes to play the
game at normal speed.

May have fixed the occasional problem some people were having, where the screen
would fade out after a game but not fade back in.

Changed the colors of the loading bar on the splash screen. It should be much
more visible now in bright light situations.

Disabled the Quit item in the File menu when on the Preferences screen. It's
supposed to be like a dialog - you have to choose Cancel or OK. Also, choosing
Quit from the File menu while a game in progress is paused will now just quit
the game, not the program. If you want to quit the program immediately, you
can still hold the mouse button down and hit the Q key, as always. And if
you're just trying to hide the game from your boss or whoever, don't forget
you can hold the mouse button down and press the space bar (without pausing
the game first) to immediately send the program into the background, but
without losing your game in progress.

Pressing the space bar while on the Help screen now does what it should.

Refined the base hum sound routines, and fixed a few minor bugs associated
with it.

Spiffied up the splash screen.

Maybe a few other minor bug fixes or cosmetic changes.

Subject: [*] Matt Foley: Motivational Speaker sample

This archive contains samples from the "Matt Foley, Motivational Speaker"
Saturday Night Live skit. In case you've never heard it before...it's
hysterical. Chris Farley plays the character of a motivational speaker
hired by a dad to speak to his kids. His dialog is hilarious, and you'll
just have to hear it to understand what I mean. Included are:

"My name is Matt Foley, and I am a moticational speaker."
"And I live in a van down by the river."
"You're not going to amount to JACK SQUAT!"
"Weeeelll, la dee freakin' da!"
"Dad, I wish you could just shut your big YAPPER!"
"Well, you'll have plenty of time to live in a van
down by the river.......when you're livin' in a

Subject: [*] NewtCase 0.9B2 - Newton Memory Managment Utility

ICS Announces Update to NewtCase -- June 10, 1994

Our previous memory management utility, HeapIt, introduced MP
Classic users to a new way to free up more of their heap space. They
could install more packages, use more applications, and even back up
their MessagePads when they couldn't before.

Two weeks ago, we released NewtCase, a memory management utility
for the Newton. NewtCase lets any MessagePad (Classic, MP100, MP110)
user archive his/her Newton applications to reduce heap memory
requirements, alleviate conflicts between applications, and clean up
his/her Extras drawer. Archived (or "NewtCased") applications do not
show up in the Extras drawer, but can be reinstalled at any time using
NewtCase.

With NewtCase, you can temporarily deinstall applications without
having to remove them from your MessagePad. You could even keep a
hundred applications on your 4 meg card without overflowing your heap
space or Extras drawer.

Since that release, we have found a few bugs and conflicts.
We've fixed the bugs, worked around some of the conflicts, and documented
the rest. If you are already using NewtCase 0.9B, please download and
start using the new version. If you have not tried NewtCase yet, now's
your chance.

NewtCase v0.9B2 should be available by June 11th on CompuServe
(GO NEWTON), America Online (GO PDA), the comp.binaries.newton newsgroup,
and the major Newton ftp sites (ftp.amug.org and newton.uiowa.edu). If
you cannot locate a copy, you can have one e-mailed to you. Send all
requests to [email protected].

Subject: [*] Revelations 1.08; a relational database

Version1.08 of Re(ve)lations REPLACES ALL PREVIOUS VERSIONS!!

What is Re(ve)lations?
A very simple - but VERY EASY TO USE - relational database management system.

Features:
-> A basic set of relational algebra operations, which can be nested to
produce complex queries.
-> A graphical query language specially developed for Re(ve)lations. No
support for character-based queries (e.g. queries in SQL format) - and good
riddance to them!
-> Access to multiple databases at the same time.
-> Data import and export in tab-delimited format.
-> Multi-user architecture.

Re(ve)lations may be included on the info-mac CD-ROM or on any other
non-profit CD-ROM.

Re(ve)lations Version History:
1.08 Improved interface for deleting tuples.
Fixed a problem when reading keys containing two-byte characters.

Known bugs:
* A True Type version of Times must be available for the manual to be
displayed correctly.
* The cells in a Query spread sheet can be edited, but changes will be
lost. (This is an 'intentional' bug -- maybe you want to edit the values a
little before you select them and paste them into a spread sheet or word
processing application.)
* Still no new manual. SORRY. I really will try to improve the manual as
soon as I have some free time...!

Future plans:
I have a lot of suggestions and requests for improvements, as well as some
ideas of my own. Please let me know what you want. You might find it in the
next version!

Based on the board game that has been marketed by Milton Bradley

challenge.

In the board game version you need two people, one to play and
one to "referee". In this game, the computer takes over the
job of grading your guesses so you can play it like solitare.

The object is to guess a secret pattern of colors (2 to 10 "pegs"
with colors selected randomly from 8) in as few guesses as possible.
The computer grades each guess, and you use the grades as a guide.
You are only allowed 15 guesses, and with a 10-peg pattern this
is just barely enough. ;)

The game includes on-line help on how to play.
Requires at least 256 colors, 4 megs of memory, system 7...
...and good logic skills!

Symbolic Composer FAQ - version 1.1
Last updated: Jun 2, 1994

Hi! I'm Fokke de Boer and running the Lodge, a non-profit network of
algorithmic composers using S-COM. A lot of people have
been asking me what Symbolic Composer is. So, I made up a sort of FAQ.

What is Symbolic Composer?

Symbolic Composer is a lisp-based modular music language for scoring
music of any style and complexity. It enables you to write music in a
very high-level language, and use this composition model to produce
MIDI files. There are no limitations concerning music style and
complexity, but it requires a certain design thinking approach.

Symbolic Composer files:

SymbolicComposerInfo will extract to a folder with lots of info on the
commercial program Symbolic Composer (you guessed it!). There are
papers, examples and a HyperCard stack.

S-COMdemo.sea.hqx will extract to a non-functional demo of the commercial
program Symbolic Composer. The demo is quite unstable, though. More on
this in the FAQ below.

FractalMusicSamples.sea.hqx will extract to 25 samples in Macintosh
Soundfile format of music created with Symbolic Composer.

Waking Hours 1.0 is a dinky little utility for Powerbook users--and I
guess Portable users. It is a very unobtrusive draggable window which
will tell you how long you have been operating on batteries--but only
how long you have been awake, it subtracts sleeping time. (And resets
on relaunch, but who reboots?)

This is of particular fun for Blackbird users with that funky new
Control Strip who want to compare its battery predictions with the
eventual reality. (Don't get me wrong, a 520c with two batteries does
run pretty long, whip out a third battery and you can outlast an
awfully long airplane flight.)

Drop Waking Hours (or an alias to it) into the "Startup Items" folder
in your "System Folder", leave it running all the time. (It is pretty
polite in CPU usage.)

Subject: [Q] Printer Spooling

I am posting this for a friend who doesn't have UseNet. Please send
responses to: amo/[email protected]

Conflict between SuperLaserspool and Omnis 3.

I have a couple databases written in Omnis 3 which generate large
reports. To cut down on touch time, I had been using Superspool to spool
them to an Imagewriter. In order to use the built in Imagewriter fonts and
send control characters to it, Omnis requires that you copy the Imagewriter
printer driver and rename it 'Textstream'. It all worked fine in System 6,
but when I upgraded to System 7, I had to upgrade to SuperLaserspool and have
lost the ability to spool to the Imagewriter. It's kind of a Catch 22 since
Omnis wants the Printer to be called 'Textstream' but SLS won't spool to it
because it's not called Imagewriter. I called Fifth Generation Systems who
acknowledged the problem, but stated that they had no plans to fix it. In
the meantime, I boot my machine under System 6 and use Superspool, but it's
kind of a pain to do and the desktop needs to be rebuilt frquently. Does
anyone out there know how to fix the problem? I thought perhaps Resedit
might be useful, but don't know enough about SLS to know what to do. Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: Accessing America OnLine at higher speeds

Two observations about release 2.1 of America OnLine's connect software:

1. When you upgrade from v2.0, the setup has to be changed to allow use of
the new 9600 baud access numbers. This information can be obtained from the
9600 baud help center located in the free area. What is not mentioned
anywhere else that I have seen including the docs which came with the Tech
Support upgrade was that the network service has to be set to SprintNet! If
this is not done, the connection bombs out after "requesting Network
attention."

2. Contrary to the official AOL 9600 baud FAQ, some lines do appear to
allow 14400 access. Your best bet is to try it and see. I use a standard
configuration on my Supra Faxmodem and get 14.4KB with compression on a
regular AOL connection. Be sure your setup in AOL is at least 14400 (57600
recommended).

2. Following up on this lead, I went to another dealer who had a Select
360 and a Pro 630 side by side and brought several kinds of paper. The
Pro 630 (Canon engine) did not significantly curl any type of paper.
The Select 360 (Fuji engine, also used elsewhere in the Select series)
did not curl bond paper, but did curl cheap ($2.50/ream) 20-pound
duplicator paper. However the curl was much less than at the first
dealer, and the scraping sound was absent, so I conclude that his 360
was misadjusted.

Subject: bug - AV Geoport SW update 1.2.1

I recently upgraded to the current AV Geoport software, v. 1.2.1, and
I'm encountering a problem when downloading files from my school's
UNIX machine via ZModem. I have had occasions during downloads that
the ZModem program on the UNIX (actually AIX) machine will temporarily
have problems, evident to me in the form of a number of "blocks retried."
More often than not, after a minute or two of unsuccessful block trans-
fers, the program will again pick up where it left off. Occasionally,
however, too many unsuccessful block transfers will occur, and the AIX
machine will terminate the connection.

Before the Geoport Express Modem upgrade, I would get a dialog box
notifying me of the lost connection, whereupon I would simply click "OK"
and redial. Since the upgrade, however, when the connection is severed,
the box comes up without test, and clicking OK has no effect. I can
force my program to quit, but then the Mac refused to respond to any
keyboard commands or mouse clicks, forcing me to restart.

I have a Quadra 660AV running System 7.1 (w/ SU 3.0), and my comm program
is Smartcomm v. 3.4A. I have not upgraded to 4.0 yet, both because of
limited funds and because what little product description I've seen does
not tell me enough to warrant spending the money. I will get it, however,
if it is a compatability problem with the current AV Express Modem soft-
ware.

Thanks very much for your help!

Subject: ClarisWorks 1.0.3v: Update

Greetings.

I re-posted a description of my problem with ClarisWorks 1.0v3 and the
XTND Translator list a few days ago; I have since recieved several
responses; this is a summary.

Hisashi Fujinaka ([email protected]) suggested rebuilding the
desktop with all the extensions turned off. I'm sure I tried that ...
but I tried anyway: no luck.

Dave Steel ([email protected]) suggested that I try moving
my XTND translator list into the same folder as the Claris application
itself, instead of leaving it inside the Claris folder within the
System folder. Sounded promising, but ... no luck.

"TomMahon" ([email protected]) reported having a similar problem, but
with importing TIFF files. His solution was to trash the XTND
translator list (in the Preferences folder), forcing ClarisWorks to
rebuild the list from scratch at the next time I started it up. No
luck. Peter Gerhardstein ([email protected]) suggested the same
thing.

Christian F. Buser ([email protected]) reminded us all that
Foreign File Access is for accessing CD-ROMs, and has nothing to do
with ClarisWorks or Apple Backup. He also pointed out that there should
be a folder full of translators in the same folder as the XTND system,
and wondered if my translators were present? Yep, they are ....

Had a small breakthrough ... I have (well, HAD) an application called
MACFAKES sitting in a folder on my hard drive. This app was supposed to
adjust the icons of various documents created by different

Hi,

I am looking for a simple timer that will allow me to keep track of the
length of time I am using my modem for connections to the Internet via PPP.
All I want basically is a small window with time of connection and
approximate cost. A timer that is automatically triggered by the modem
would be neat! Anyone know of any programs.

Ken, I believe that Control Strip is bundled only with the latest
PowerBooks: 500-series and the Duo 280/280c. As far as I know, Control
Stirp is not available for downloading, but should be bundled as part of
System 7.5 (summer release?)

Regarding PB FAQs, there are a couple at mac.archive.umich.edu in the
directory mac/uitl/powerbook. You might first grab the file 00index.txt
(or something very close to that). Also, there is the newsgroup
comp.sys.mac.portables.

Good luck! And enjoy you new PB!

Subject: Dumb Things I Did This Week

Folks, I was done in a couple times this past week by my own stupidity
and/or ignorance. I pass the following information on in the fond hope
that it may prevent one or more of y'all from screwing yourselves as I
just did.

1. Stuffit Deluxe Translators: I had a ZIP file to decode, so I invoked
SITD and went to the "translators" menu. No UnZIP. Also no entry for two
other translators that should have been there. Turning off everything but
SITD amongst my CP's and Extensions caused the "missing" translators to
reappear. I tracked down the culprit: SAM Intercept. If SAM was active,
SITD missed three translators. If inactive, SITD had all translators.

I dropped a note to Leonard Rosenthol. He came back with "Increase SITD's
memory allocation." I did. It worked. No, I haven't the foggiest idea.

2. TN3270: I talk with the Tech mainframe via Brown Univ's excellent
TN3270 program. At the office via direct connect and from home via SLIP.
Saturday TN3270 decided to hang my home computer. Adding insult to injury
I couldn't ftp to my Tech account (Fetch) either. How ruddy rude. All my
TCP/IP applications worked fine at every other site. I was particularly
annoyed that I could do whatever I wished at West Virginia University, a
school we tend to look down upon. I mean, WVU's data communications are
two cans and a string (No offense, Jeff, but what else can one think when
the best selling snack food at Mountaineer Stadium is Spam on a rope?).

But I digress. I hadn't been able to SLIP into Tech for four days. Minor
nuisance. I could do most of my chores via pure serial connection. So I
complained to the powers and awaited a fix. Then things started getting
goofy on my office machine. BeHierarchic refused to work yesterday. OK,
spend the whole day rebuilding my system (Don't ask). At least MenuChoice
worked afterwards. Just as I was about to send my shareware to Kerry
Clendenning, I noticed that TN3270 hung my office machine, too. Hmmm. Do
I detect a pattern here?

What have I done lately? Apple's ProDOS Extension came to mind. I had
been using AFE to handle ProDOS disks, and I thought I'd eliminate the
middle person by going with the extension. Seemed to work like a charm.
Not quite. It killed (1) TN3270 and (2) BeHierarchic. Removing that fool
extension fixed all my problems. At least the ones I know about.

Word has it that the ProDOS FIle System extension will be part of the
forthcoming System 7.5. Several of my buddies from olden times have
expressed glee that the Mac will be Apple /// compatible. Uh, I don't
think so, guys. Not if it's the same ProDOS Apple is pushing now. It'll
kill many of your favorite toys. Many of mine anyway.

That is how I've mis-spent half of my week. May my experience save one
or more of y'all the same bother.

Subject: FoxPro 2.5 (Q)

Dear Netters,
I have seen some of the discussion about FoxPro's lack of manuals, and
wondered if the $99 deal is really worth it. Ever since I got my Macintosh
I've been looking for a good relational database with all the capabilities of
Borland Paradox: Queries, sort, seperate view structures, separate printout
formats, multiple tables, merging of tables etc... I noticed when I walked
into the software store, that the box that had FoxPro 2.5 included several
binded manuals. Are these sufficient to do the above relational database
operations?
A second question about FoxPro: what is the hard disk space required of the
program, if you have tables that are maximum 8 x 1000 records?
What is the difference between FoxBase and FoxPro?
I have only had a glimpse of FoxBase.
If FoxPro does not do the above operations, will Panorama, or some other Mac
database do that?
Thank you.
Sincerely,

No. For two reasons: 1. There isn't a really good third party book out for
FPMac yet, though MS reps say a handfull (hmm, is that a lot or a few???)
should be out this summer. and 2. I doubt you are going to find a single
book that fits the bill.

There will be a book out in as little as two weeks (but don't count too
heavily on that prediction) called FoxPro MAChete: ... written by Lisa
Slater and 3 other people. The book is aimed at all FP developers, not just
Mac, but the examples will be Mac specific where there really is something
specific to the Mac. It is also aimed at the accomplished developer, not the
pikers like me (but I'm going to buy one anyway). The book will be published
by Hayden (it was originally Brady, but they sold it before it went to
print, and the ISBN will change, so I can't help with the ordering info).
Last I heard, the Hayden version was just about ready to go to the printers
June 2. If it really did get to the printers, it will be out by the end of
June.

My suggestion is to go pick the FP Windows book that looks the most
rationally organized to you and use it as a starting point. A huge majority
of the work you do in FP will be the same if you are using Windows or Mac.
The Mac specific stuff (like the fact that Mac windows aren't constrained
inside a "parent" application window) will just end up being those
frustrating learning experiences which are inevitable in learning new
software.

Good luck, and let me know if I'm wrong about point 1 above.

Subject: japanese system software [Q]

[Sorry for crossposting]

I would appreciate any advice on Japanese system
software. Sorry for the length.

Currently I use System 7.0.1 and KanjiTalk 6.0.7 on my LC II (6mb RAM/40
+80mb HD: The two system folders alone occupy almost two thirds of my
internal hard disk space, so I had to purchase external one.). My work
involves Japanese software such as EG Word and HyperCard.J, along with
commercial softwares like MS Word, Excel and Claris Works which run on
English system. It is very frustrating having to switch over to the
other system every 30 minutes.

I am considering either to upgrade to System 7.1 and buy Japanese
Language Kit or to buy KanjiTalk 7. If there is anybody familiar to
these systems, I would welcome any thought concerning these. My main
questions include:

1) How well do they handle above softwares? (For instance, the
Kit is bundled with front-end processor named Kotoeri, but as EG Word
requires its front-end processor EG Bridge to be installed in system
software, will it flexible enough to use both? Another problem I
experience is that when I open document containing Japanese characters
with English-running software, e.g., MS Word, the screen shows junky
letters. Will the problem be solved with these systems or it is the
commercial software that fails to handle different languages?) ;

2) Will they work fine with my admittedly poor hardware
configuration? (What will be the sizes of system folders respectively?) ;
and,

3) To my colleagues down under, are they available in Australia?

Many thanks in advance.

I am looking for some help with PM5.

I need some help with PM user dictionaries and hyphenation. This is PM 5
on a Macintosh.
I am preparing a bilingual dictionary (English plus Delaware, an American
Indian language). I place files that originate in a database file into PM to
prepare
camera-ready copy.
For Delaware words, I sometimes need to hyphenate words, but if possible
I would rather not use the hyphenation mark (-) because I need to use that to
hyphenate English words that are in the same file. I would like to use the
equal sign (=) to indicate hyphenation in Delaware words. The idea is that I
would hyphenate all the Delaware words in a user dictionary, and then when
the text was Placed, PM would do all the hyphenation work for me.
Is there any way to get PM to
recognize the equal sign as a hypenation marker (bearing in mind that I still
need to use the conventional hyphen for English words)? I know that I can
hyphenate manually with the equal sign in a file placed in PM just by typing
an equal
sign and then Shift-Enter to force a line break, but this manuscript is very
long,
and this could be very boring. Surely there must be people using PM in other
languages
who need specialized hyphenation symbols, etc.
I realize this is a little esoteric but any help would be appreciated.

A month ago I complained to Apple about this (800-SOS-APPL). They admitted

If you want to see it at its worst, make a text window with text much wider
than 640 pixels and look at the blank area to its right. Or instead of
blank text window to the right, use the start-up background pattern as your
desktop pattern (a black and white checkerboard pattern with 1-pixel
squares: the 1-bit color approximation to gray). In fact, you'll see the
streaks to the right of the "Welcome to Macintosh" box at start-up.

The Apple Internet Router is actually quite fast and depending upon what

the words TCP/IP and Apple Internet Router together, they are referring to
an extension that allows two Apple Internet Routers (or a Farallon
InterRoute/5) to pass AppleTalk packets through the internet inside of
TCP/IP packets. This is not the same as having LocalTalk uses with MacTCP
making a TCP/IP connection through the router, nor is this the same as
routing TCP and allowing you to hang various TCP/IP subnets off the Apple
Internet Router ports.

Subject: Sad Mac! Help Me!

Yesterday, when my wife turned on our Mac, she was greeted with a Sad Mac!
Horror of Horrors!!!

Under the sad mac were the 2 lines with the error code: 000000F, then 0000002.
The number of zeros may be off, but you get the idea.

We have a Quadra 605 5/160. I don't have any technical data for this machine
(The Dead Mac Scrolls only goes as far as the Mac II in it's coverage).

Could
someone please tell me what this error code means and/or point me to a list of
sad mac codes? Please, please, please?

Thanks so much...

Yes, for me too. Had a stationary pad document that I was using as a form.
When I filled out the form and scrolled down, when I tried to scroll back
up, the upper three lines were not there. It was as though the beginning of
the document was now three lines lower. If I hit the window grow icon
(upper right corner of the title bar of a document) it would expand to full
screen size and ... the three missing lines would reappear. Buggy Yes.

Subject: soft reboot on 660AV with adjustable keyboard

Hi, I recently got a Quadra 660AV with an adjustable keyboard. I can't figure
out how to do a "soft" reboot on it. I looked through all the pitiful
documentation that came with it, but to no avail. I really need to know
because I've been testing a lot of old shareware I have and many programs
freeze the Mac and I have to hit the power to reboot. Thanks.

P.S. Nobody aswered my question about how to capture full screen video.
I guess nobody out there does this on a Mac. Shame... it was REALLY easy
to do on my Amiga.

Subject: Switch box between modem & printer?

Hello -

We just bought a new Personal Laser Writer 300 that has to be
directly connected to a printer in order to work (i.e. can't be
hooked directly into LocalTalk network). The same computer is
also hooked to a LocalTalk network through the printer port and
to a modem through the modem port.

My question is: Can we attach an A/B switch into the modem
port that switches between the modem and the printer? It seems
like it would work, but I don't know if it would affect the way
the printer and modem data is transfered.

The basic problem is we have three DIN8 plugs that need to go
into two ports. The A/B switch would give us that ability if
it can be done.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Subject: System Update 3.0: Where Is It?

In a message posted to Info-Mac on 9 May, Mark Johnson stated that the
System Update 3.0 files could be found in the ftp.apple.com directory
/mac/sys.soft/7.system.updates/. However, according a request that I sent
to [email protected], that directory doesn't exist.

Where are the files, really?

BTW, I'm using ftpmail because I don't have *real* net access. :(

I like the decision to distribute The UnderGround Mac in this newsgroup.

Are there any other similar publications knocking on your door? I think that
the
volume of this group could accomodate a couple of more publications, as long
as they are interesting.

(Hm, idea: if there is a lot of candidates for distribution, make a trial
period
and then collect votes on keeping/dumping the item?)

Subject: upgrade for a Mac IIci: Rocket + Rocketshare? (q)

I need more power than my IIci gives me now.
So I'm thinking about Quadras, accelerators, PowerMac cards (no
PowerMacs, because they cost too much, for the moment, here in Italy).
If mine is a a FAQ, please forgive me and give me the right pointer to
the FAQ file, if possible.
I'm attracted by the Radius Rocket cards because of the RocketShare
software (the two, card and sw cost about 1100 $) which allows to
concurrently use the ci CPU and the Rocket CPU. This solution requires
anyway specific RAM for the Rocket and one dedicated HD for the
Rocket (otherways it is not easy to have concurrent processes), but this
means that (600 $ for 16M RAM and 300-400 $ for dedicated HD) you arrive
at 2000 $, that's the price you pay for some Quadras...

On the other side: Apple PDS PowerMac cards, are only for 68040 CPU, or
can they be installed also on 68030 motherboards?

Many thanks to anyone will help me; if possible, CC: your message
directly to me (our system is going up and down because of OS
troubles).

Subject: what about an se?

Hi mac-netters,

I am considering buying a Mac SE 1/20 for about $150... do you think it's
worth the price? I have an LCIII at present, and I would buy the SE as a
portable machine (I often go out for the weekend and sometimes need my Mac
:-)).

The next question, of course, is about the System: I plan to use System
6.0.8: what about it? shoud I use 6.0.7? what's the difference?

And then the third question: applications! I primarily use word processing
& spreadsheet (Word 5.1, Excel 4.0, WordPerfect 3.0a). Should I consider
an
all-in-one package? (ClarisWorks?).

Please answer to my mailbox, as I don't read digests regularly :-)).

I look forward for your opinions!

TIA,

Carlo Viviani

My database shows them at:

Creative Solutions Inc
4701 Randolph Rd. #12
Rockville, MD 20852

No idea if they are still there but you might want to call them. Or, maybe
someone in the 301 area code will call them and see if they still exist and
then post their fax and email address ... hint hint.
