Subject: [*] Another submission of RdataByDateS 1.06

About "dataByDate", version 1.06
What is "dataByDate"?
"dataByDate" is a HyperCard-stack. It runs under HyperCard 2.
"dataByDate" saves files that were altered since (or at or until) a particular
date to a
folder, a disk, a network drive etc. Certain file types (e.g. INITs,
applications ...) can
(and should) be excluded from the savings process.
"dataByDate" is fast, flexible and very easy to handle.
"dataByDate" is free for non-commercial distribution.

Subject: [*] binarypump1.03.cpt.hqx

Ever download a file, only to have it appear as a generic binary file?
If you transfer files with unix, IBM, or VAX systems frequently you've
probably experienced this once or twice. Normally, the solution is to
figure out the correct file type, and then use Resedit or some other
utility and manually change the file type and creator.

Binary Pump is a program which looks at file tags or name extensions in order
to convert them to the correct mac file type and creator. This program is very
easy and very quick to use--simply drag and drop and it's so fast you might
wonder if it ran at all! Binary Pump will also work for non-Drag and Drop
System 6.0.7 users.

Binary Pump is also very easy to customize and has several features which
allow the user to extract file tag information.

version 1.03
-Fixes problems with identifying binary tags.
-Gives time to background processes.

Subject: [*] Cyclone 1.1.1

High Risk Ventures is proud to present our first shareware game! Cyclone
features way-cool graphics and sound, and addicting and challenging game
play. It's based on an old arcade game called Star Castle, in which you
fly a spaceship around on a wrap-around screen, and attack an enemy base
which sits in the middle of screen. The base protects itself with three
rotating shield rings, heat-seeking mines, and a nasty plasma cannon.
We've added a few things to the original game, including weapons for your
ship, shields, bonus points, a challenge level, and more. There's also an
'original game' mode for those who want to play the game as it was originally
designed.

This is a commercial-quality game, offered as shareware with a $10
registration fee. Call High Risk Ventures at (800) 927-0771 or email to
[email protected] for more information.

Enjoy!

WHAT IS HDS?

HDS is a simple but very fast database system. In an HDS database you
can store and retrieve any information you like. It is a single user
database which delivers all needed low level functions and as well
some pretty high level functions to form a powerful tool for the
organisation of your information.
Emphasis is laid on an easy and fast access of information on a record
by record basis. Usage may span from a quite simple save file where
you store some items for the next session up to a fully fledged
database with relations and processing directives.

I've now spent a month or so with a new V.32bis (14.4KB) modem that gave

Subject: [*] Keep It Up 1.1

Keep It Up version 1.1 (c) by Karl Pottie

Are you tired of getting the "The Application xxx has unexpectedly quit
because an error of type zz occurred" message ? Are you depending on this
application to keep running at all times, even when you're away ? Then you
should investigate "Keep It Up" (KIU), the new utility from the author of
Autoboot.

What does Keep It Up do ?

KIU watches certain applications and monitors if they are still running. If
an application no longer runs because it "unexpectedly quit" or because the
user quit it, KIU will attempt to relaunch this application or restart the
computer. This will ensure that your application is always running and
available. This is especially important for all kinds of server
applications.

Most important changes in 1.1:

* You now can also put aliases of documents in the KIU Items folder. On
(re)launch of the application to which the documents belong, the specified
documents will be opened.

* You can now view the Keep It Up log file by selecting "Open Log File"
>From the file menu. This will launch TeachText and open the log file. This
is done according to the new Macintosh philosophy of writing small
specialised applications which are tied together by apple-events.

Keep It Up requires System 7. This is $30 shareware.

You can distribute this software by giving it away to friend, upload
it to a BBS or online services like Compuserve or AOL, or send it to
any ftp site. Basically you can distribute it any way you like, as
long as you don't ask any money for it, other than a small charge
related to distribution costs (cost of a disk, postage or download
fee) and keep it together with the unmodified document.

In the late 50s and early 60s, I looked forward to a special radio program
Saturday nights on Chicago station WFMT, called "The Midnight Special."
They played a mixture of folk music, show tunes, comedy: it was heady for a
young nerd. Others may also remember this program with affection.
Here are some snatches that recall the program.
The Midnight Special Leadbelly (the show's intro)
Milord Edith Piaf
The Lonesome Valley Dyer-Bennett (final tune of every show)

These sounds are sampled at 11Khz (22K made them too big).
They are in System 7 clickable format.

(Haven't been back, don't know if the station or the show is still on the air.

Heard Norm Pellegrini announce a Chicago Symphony broadcast a few years ago.)

I call this volume 1, in case I find additional sounds.
Some that would be neat:
The Bugbird Lord Buckley
Lobachevsky Tom Lehrer
Beedlebum Spike Jones
(pick something) Joan Baez

(My friend Ken Moore enjoyed this program too. Here's to his memory.)

Subject: [*] NotifyMail 2.0.0 File Submission

NotifyMail is a system extension that listens for a telnet connection to
port 1035. When it receives the connection, it sends an AppleEvent to
Eudora to check your mail. The end result (when coupled with a .forward
file on your UNIX machine or compatible mechanism on a VMS machine or a
Macintosh mail server) is that you will almost immediately receive your
electronic mail when it arrives on your UNIX machine. You no longer have to
tell Eudora to check your mail every X minutes. This also puts less stress

Subject: [*] Sparkle1.71.sit.hqx

Sparkle 1.7.1 A mac-look-and-feel MPEG player:

WHAT's NEW FROM VERSION 1.7?
% Works around a bug in the QT VM extension. This should help those people
for whom Sparkle 1.7 crashed when a file was opened.
% The progress bar now updates itself better. Looks better in B/W.
% More of the default QT movie player keystrokes now work.
% Notification of extensive errors in an MPEG file.
% Fixed bug that displayed certain files as "slanted".
% Better memory management for ultra-low memory conditions.

WHAT's NEW FROM VERSION 1.6?
% Misc bug fixes and cleanups.
% Way cool progress bar for showing progress on slow machines.
% Opening files is much faster.
% Random access and stepping backwards are both available.
% Saving to QuickTime will now work much better in the background
(much less jerky).

See the New in 1.71 file for details.

Now requires QuickTime 1.6. If you don't have it, ftp it from ftp.apple.com.

WHAT IS IT?
Sparkle plays MPEGs and converts them to QuickTime movies. It uses the
standard QuickTime movie controller as its interface. It is multifinder
friendly and, with enough memory, will open multiple documents at once.
It is free. I ask only that you read the enclosed README file and if you
can help with any of the issues I raise there, you mail me.

REQUIRES:
System 7 or greater.
QuickTime 1.6 or greater.
An 020 based mac or greater.

Dear netters, i've installed a Harris Performer Pro accelerator in my Mac
Classic with some rather crippling results. Perhaps someone could offer a
diagnosis (Harris' tech support put me on endless hold and don't bother to
return my calls. Avoid them like the plague-- they took more than two months to
deliver the thing in the first place)
Although ATM is in my system folder it doesn't work. A dialog box comes up
when I boot saying that ATM 6800 or ATM 68020-68030 must be in the sys folder
for it to work. It doesn't. I thought perhaps as I was now using a 68030 CPU I
needed the latter version of ATM so I installed that, only to have the thing
crash every time it got to the ATM init.
It now doesn't seem to think there are any outline fonts in the system folder
and so everything I print is bitmappped.
Can anyone shed any light on this? Many thanks.

This isn't a 'problem'. It's one of the many terrible things about the
GeoPort. Because the modem (or modem "emulation" as I prefer to call it)
requires full use of the DSP, it cannot be used for speech recognition.
Oh yeah, and don't be expecting a speed upgrade for that GeoPod. Gripe

I have recently inherited a Summagraphics graphics tablet model MM961 and the
software which was extant at the time it was bought. I tried to install the
software provided onto my Plus (System 6.0.7), but couldn't get the installer
to place the software in the System on the hard disk. I suspect the tablet is
so old (1985) that hard-disks weren't common on Macs then! I also tried using
Font-DA mover to install the driver software directly into the System on my
hard disk (as a DA), but it didn't like that (I got a "no coprocessor"
message). The final problem was that if I DID install the software on a floppy
drive and try to use it (on System 6.0.7) I got the message "stack collision
with heap". I understand the messages and I realise that the System software I
run is probably too recent for the tablet driver software, so...
a) Does anyone know if there is driver software around which might drive this
tablet on a Plus using a hard disk and System 6.0.7?
b) Do Summagraphics still exist and might they have the solution?
c) Should it go in the bin? (sorry - 'trash' for the Yankees out there)

Subject: Any Sys. 7 Pro users? (R)

Luis,

I'm using 7Pro (v7.1.1). It is quite stable for every day use.

I have it installed on a Mac which I use for software development. It also
has a lot of beta and sometime alpha applications running. That's probably
one of the most hostile environment you can get on a Mac. I never have a
crash that is related to the OS, it is usally my fault or one of the not yet
7Pro compatible 3rd party software.

In terms of mail access it is "okay" compare to what's available. If you're
at a site which already have Unix SMTP mail services, then what Apple offers;
free with the OS, is no comparison to freeware like Eudora.

StarNine recently announced and shipping a brand new SMTP/POP3 gateway for
PowerTalk. They even have a trial version from their FTP site
(ftp.starnine.com) which expires in March '94. Matter of fact, I'm using it
right now to send you this respond.

If you're really buying 7Pro for its built in EMail feature. I suggest you
wait until 3rd party vendors like CE Software and Microsoft release their
AppleMail replacements before buying (ATTN.: Qualcomm, are you listening???).

Although, 7Pro is not just the Mail facility. It is the whole AOCE package
that many, many 3rd party vendors are working on compatible versions of their
respecitive software. But as of today there are still only a handful of
applications that are AOCE capable.

I hope this helps! If you have more questions, you can send it to me
directly.

Does anyone have an idea of how to transfer TCP/IP packets from the dial-up

wrapping / unwrapping of TCP/IP packets from /into Appletalk) into the

I know it can be solved by (expensive) hardware Appletalk/Ethernet TCP/IP

The purpose of the whole set-up is to have Telnet/Fetch... Internet access

only certain macs on the zone can print to a laserwriter, and no other macs
(with laserwriter drivers) can. Yes, this is a underhanded way of preventing
some from using the laserwriters, but that is often how decisions get made...

Subject: Bottom Line Drops Some 900 Numbers

This morning a Bottom Line Distribution catalog came in the mail. They are
the hardware and software company notorious for requiring purchasers to
call a 900-number.

I have always assumed that, if you have to pay a fee just to place an
order, your chances of getting any subsequent problems (non-delivery, tech
support, billing errors, etc.) solved are just about nil. (I continue to
hold to that prejudice.) Consequently, I always trash B.L. catalogs
immediately, without opening them. Until this morning...

This morning I noticed that the current catalog lists a real phone number
for orders, (512) 472-4956. It's not 800 yet, but not 900 either.

Since that is a local number in Austin, I called to ask if the company had
discontinued all their 900 numbers. The gentleman I talked with, who seemed
reluctant to talk about it, said that B.L. still has "some 900 numbers," to
screen out the "junk calls" and callers from some countries (?). I guess
this means that catalogs mailed to different areas list different telephone
numbers.

One good bit of information is that (he said) technical support is "never"
a 900-number call, and that it's number is (512) 476-5041. He also gave me
a spiel about 900 numbers helping to keep B.L.'s prices low.

Since B.L. has a legitimate order number now, I think I'll keep the
catalog. Maybe even look at it some day....

Disclaimer: I have no relationship or experience with Bottom Line
Distributors, except that they send me catalogs.

Subject: FutureBASIC (v. 1.02) BUG (?)

Whilst testing some of my existing Macintosh TrueBASIC (v. 2.5)
programs on FutureBASIC (v.1.02) I came across an anomaly when using
nested FOR loops. I have isolated the problem in the following
FutureBASIC code segment which you can test for yourselves. I notified
Zedcor Inc. in Arizona by Fax and email several days ago but have not
received any reply. If anybody can tell me what's happening and why I
would be well pleased.

WINDOW 1 : TEXT 3,9

' here is the problem
PRINT " i"," j"
PRINT
FOR i = 1 TO 4
FOR j = i+1 TO 4
PRINT i,j
NEXT j
NEXT i

DO
UNTIL FN BUTTON

END

Here's the FutureBASIC output for the program:-

i j

1 2
1 3
1 4
2 3
2 4
3 4
4 5 <- HINT: this is the offending line !

So, when i = 4, the first call to the j FOR loop is
'FOR j = 5 to 4' which should not be entered should it ?

To confirm this I tried the same nested FOR loop in TrueBASIC.
The output for this is:-

i j

1 2
1 3
1 4
2 3
2 4
3 4

as would be expected.

In addition I tried running the same code on a number of Macs
(all running System 7.1): Centris610, IIvx, Duo210, and got the
same results.

Anyone have any good ideas (apart from not using Basic) ?

First, I could have called Wacom, and they would have put me into touch
with a supplier of ADB Y-connectors ($15 + 5 shipping) [1].

Some local computer superstores have them like: MicroCenter and CompUSA
(again $15) [2].

Black Box (412) 746-5500 sells item # HK-EVMA18 which is a ADB Port Extender
that is a 6' extension with two female connectors on one end ($25) [3].

inmac (1-800-547-5444) sells one for $25 [4].
APS Technologies sells one as Item # 41765 for $29 [5]

If one needs a new mouse, Logitech's mouse has a dual connector [6].
And if you are thinking of getting one of those nice 16" Apple monitors,
they have extra ADB ports for you to use [7].

Finally, MacWarehouse sells an ADB Port Extender (by Sophisticated Circits,
Item #ACC 1105) ($19.95) as well as a plain Y-connector ($15 + 3 shipping).
I opted for the latter.

connect via ethernet to a Unix SUN.

My problem was thatI could'nt run olwm. I was trying to run it from xterm.
So.. I could connect to Unix and run xterm and cmdtool, but would get a error

The solution is not to open MacX as xterm in the Remote command field. My
remote command field looks something like this:
/usr/openwin/bin/olwm/ -display "Hamlet:0"&
Also make these changes:
In the Edit field change the window preference -client specified.
In the Edit field change the display prefernce - rooted window.

Hope this helps someone.

Wolfram Research maintains a very extensive archive which is accessible
either by ftp or a rather sophisticated mailserver; the latter is
generally easier to use. To get started, send the message HELP INTRO to
[email protected] (in the body, not the subject line.)
To connect via ftp, the address is mathsource.wri.com.

Yes, I had the same problem. But it didn't crash the machine. I am using
MenuChoice 1.9 and Eudora 2.0, all are the newest versions.

Clare:

I discovered the same problem (except I didn't crash) immediately after
upgrading to MenuChoice 1.9. I sent Mr. Clendinning email describing the
problem, including screen shots of the dialog boxes put up by Eudora. He
responded by saying two other users had reported the same problem, and
that it was close to the top of his *bug-fix* list. He was rather surprised
to hear I didn't experience the conflict with v1.8. It was his belief that
all versions since 1.5 exhibited this behavior.

There is no quick and easy way of doing this.

When INITs load they can either dynamically allocate memory or detatch their
own code resources and leave them floating in the system heap. Whichever they
do the blocks of memory that hold their data and code are not labelled in any
way. The only way to establish ownership of a block in the system heap is to
watch each block as it is allocated or detatched using a low-level debugger
such as Macsbug.

You'll need to watch all the INITs load and use Macsbug's HD or HT commands
before and after each INIT. This way you can see what additional memory has
been consumed in the system heap.

An easier way to find out this information is to contact the developer of each
INIT in question and ask about them about their INITs memory use.

yes, in fact i can reproduce the same effect on my powerbook duo 210. if i
launch a very old application (filemaker 1.0 i think, from about 1986) with
32-bit addressing on, then my computer turns itself off. however, it has
never simply turned off while i was typing, and it was only when this
specific, very old application was launched.

not necessarily. if it is a software problem, then this won't do you any good.

Greetings, all!

I am about to purchase a Quadra 800 with a 16" monitor, 230MB HD, and
probably a CD ROM. I'll have 8MB of memory. What I was wondering if
there are any extensions or control panels I should look for on the
nets to make sure there are no unexpected slowdowns (a la the AV Macs'
disk problems) or conflicts with standard software.

If anyone can help me out with this, I'd appreciate it. BTW, I know
that I should get the latest Hardware System Update from ftp.apple.com,
that's the type of stuff I'm looking for, I guess...

Thanks, all!

QuickTime 1.6 can load sounds off any audio CD into any program that opens
QuickTime files. You can then save the file as a QuickTime file and use
an extraction program to convert the sound; check sumex-aim.

I could possibly trade a nice, expandable conversion utility for the

Subject: sizeable chunks for downloading

My Mac is a standalone one. I have access to the networks via a network of
Unix workstations on which PC's serve as terminals.
Downloading Mac stuff is done on a Unix machine, then to a floppy disk on
the PC, which is read at last by the Mac. This sounds much more terrible
than it is. But more and more I find that files to download have such huge
sizes that I can't put them on a normal (high density) floppy.

Does anyone know a solution to this? (No, I can't have the Mac directly
connected alas). And if not, may I ask future contributors to split their
files into sizeable chunks? Thanks a lot.

what do you mean by "arrow pointer" you mean the arrow cursor? as far as i

16x16 pixels.

Hi everyone,

A friend of mine works in a bank, and will soon be in charge of setting up
the work schedules for the tellers. This will entail fixed blocks of hours,
making sure that any one teller won't work more than a given number of hours
per week, making sure that there are at least two or three tellers on duty
at all times, things like that. There are about 20 tellers total...

Is there any application, free/share/payware or otherwise, that will work
better than her bank's present system of paper and pencil on graph paper?

She's not a programmer-type, so she'd rather have something that doesn't
take too much work for her (or me) to set up...

Subject: X-Windows on the Mac

I would like to repeat the request from Tim Colson (v12:7) concerning
software for running X-Windows under the Mac OS. We have about 50
computers in our research group - 25 Unix workstations, 20 Macs, and 5
PCs. The maintenance costs of the workstations (including unbundled
software maintenance) respresent a significant amount of money each
year. We are seriously considering phasing out most of the workstations
and keeping a central core of 4 very powerful workstations surrounded by
a collection of either X-terminals or X-emulators running on Macs or PCs
(Pentiums).

My preference is for the X-emulator as it permits the use of other
software besides the X-Windows such as spreadsheets, word processing and
so forth. I would also prefer a Mac rather than am Intel machine. Unless
there is truly transparent X-window environment for the Mac, however, I
will be forced to look seriously at buying Pentium machines. I refuse to
use A-UX. So once again the question:

Is there an X-Window environment for the Mac OS that is comparable to
X-Windows on a Sun SPARC? I am not (necessarily) interested in public
domain software; there is a budget.

Reply to me and I will summarize as appropriate.

Happy Birthday Mac! Have I got a niche for you!

There is also eXodus by White Pine Software, but I hear it is not much
different.

But just what are your problems with MacX.
We seem to hate the PC X-Window programs around here.
Some like Excursion, run out of MSWindow's system resource memory so
quickly and there is only 64K of that to spare. Others seem to limit
you to the fixed resolution of the screen (not that scrolling around
a virtual screen like MacX is all that fun--I'm sure you would agree
that MacX needs to somehow interpolate the X-Window screens down in
size to fit on 14" monitors).

Now emulating an environment is the job of the window manager.
You can use MacX's rootless windows to keep the look and feel of the
Mac, or you can run a window manager in a root window, which acts as
a virtual screen.

Maybe if you better explained what your problems with MacX are.

Autodoubler has been giving strange problems recently.
We have three machines A,B and C.
C was just purchased.
AD worked great when it was just A&B
now with C for some strange reason A&B thinks C's files are 1 Gig each!
They show up as 1,024,612 Megs etc each. But C sees it as the correct 400K
or so.
I'm dinking around recompressing from local and remote machines right now
but nothing works. Has anyone encountered this kind of problems before?
AD's Utilities didn't help either.
