These Newton books describing various America Online Features. I've
posted these at the request of their author, Phil Torrone
They're freeware and _great_ examples of what a Newton book _should_ look

install them on the internal store.
They are NOT Newton client software for AOL, just books.

Subject: [*] ChunkJoiner 1.2.1; concatenates files
ChunkJoiner is a shareware utility that lets you join (concatenate)
any group of files in a single piece.
Select the files you want to join, and drag&drop them onto ChunkJoiner.
You can skip the data up to and including a configurable text string,
and/or skip the data beyond and including another configurable text string,
within each chunk going to be joined.
This is useful whenever you receive long enclosures and your e-mail gateway
splits the messages in several chunks.
You can build digests by adding header, separators, and footer.
ChunkJoiner works on any Macintosh, but it
**requires** System 7 or later.
New since version 1.2:
Fixed the user interface in the search&insert strings dialogs.
New since version 1.1.1:
"Fat" application;
can join in reverse order;
can insert header, separators, and footer.

Subject: [*] Coordinates 2.3a; a geographical utility
Coordinates 2.3a is a Macintosh application which allows the user to make a
variety of geographical coordinate transformations and distance calculations.
The application was written in FutureBasic (from Zedcor, Inc. of Tucson, AZ)
and was benchmarked on a Mac 660AV and an older Mac II (w/ Daystar 50 MHz
PowerCache w/FPU). It has not been tested on PowerPC platforms, but
presumably will work in 68k emulation mode.
What's New in Version 2.3a?
Version 2.3a is an upgrade from 2.2 in that:
(1) - the window refresh is fully operational.
(2) - occasional erroneous results in output fields are elminated by using
formatted print statements.
(3) - added the capability to compute the location of a distant point given
the location of the starting point and the distance and azimuth (or bearing)
to second point.
(4) - provides smoother interface. Tab keys move from field to field.
Carriage returns operate highlighted buttons.

Subject: [*] FlashWorks 1.0.6 Mac flash cards
FlashWorks is a suburb flash card program for learning foreign languages. It
is available for both Macintosh (fwmac_.sea) and Windows (fwwin.zip). It
comes with databases for German, Spanish, French, Greek (including a
postscript font), and Hebrew (including a bitmap font for the Macintosh).
Full instructions are included.
It is very fast and flexible. For example, you can tell it you want to work
with verbs and nouns, not prepositions, etc., that occur in chapters 4-6 in
your text book (optional) and occur at least 30 times in the literature
(optional for Biblical Greek and Hebrew). It watches what words you get right
and wrong and adjusts a "Difficulty" rating for each word for each student.
Therefore, you can also search for just those words that have a personal
difficulty of 3 and above, or perhaps only 5.
The databases are really text files, so you can modify them as much as you
wish with your word processor, including adding new languages or modifying
the ones included. You can select the font for the foreign word, so you can
use it for Russian, Arabic, etc., anything you can get a font for.
The current version is 1.0.6 and has been in use for two years. This file has
been checked with Disinfectant and is self-extracting.

Hmm, I seem to be turning out a new version about every two weeks! The
program is slowly turning into a stable and useful application though.
Version 1.7 has -again- some new features added (some requested by
users).
Mail2000 is a program which allows you to take your saved e-mail files,
mboxes and saved newspostings home and read them at your leisure. It
has some options to mark, save, append and delete messages. This is
especially for people who keep their mail and news at home in files.
All you have to do is open a TEXT file, and Mail2000 will examine the
file, create a list of mails or postings, and thread them either
according to subject, or to sender. You can then read the mails and
the threads. Mails or threads can be marked, and subsequently be
deleted, saved to a new file or appended to another file. It is
possible to specify different header definitions for each different
file, so you can also use it to read VMS mail or mailing list digests.

Subject: [*] nancy-halloween-textures; some desktop patterns
Please accept this Desktop Texture file into the Info-mac
archives. It contains 4 ppats: 3 for Halloween, 1 for Christmas.
They're 128 x 128 pixels, thousands of colors. They look great
at 256 colors, though. That's what my monitor is, so I haven't
actually *seen* my own work in 16-bit.
To my knowledge the ppats can be used with any desktop texture
application, although some apps require a little more effort than
others, i.e. copy/paste.
As usual, the textures are response-ware. If they bring a
smile to your face, or to the face of anyone who sees your mac,
I'd be elated to know via email or snail mail. Please take a

Subject: [A] About chips and ends little and big...
In Info-Mac Digest V12 #141, Allan Hunter asks:
> One occasionally hears the Motorola chip family and associated software
> referred to as "big-endian", as opposed to Intel chips-and-software set
> which is referred to as "little-endian". Anyone care to illuminate
> those of us who do not entirely know which end of what is which and why?
It is generally true that computer addresses specify bytes (commonly a
collection of 8 bits). However, the data constructs upon which computers
operate may require more than one byte of storage. For example, integers
are commonly stored in two or four bytes.
Which of these multiple bytes, then, does the address refer to? In a "big-
endian" architecture, it refers to the byte containing the most significant
bits; in a "little-endian" architecture, it refers to the byte containing
the least significant bits.
You cited Intel chips as being "little-endian." DEC minicomputers were also
little-endian. It is advantagous to handle the computation of numbers, longer
numbers than the word-size of your computer, by addressing (dealing with) the
least significant portion first, and then progressing forward through memory,
continuing the calculation and propogating the carry.
Memory looks the most natural when laid out like this:
3 2 1 0 Byte Number (address), growing right to left
+-----+-----+ +-----+-----+
| MSB | LSB | | MSB | LSB |
+-----+-----+ +-----+-----+
High Word Low Word 16-bit word pair of a 32-bit number
You cited Motorola chips as being "big-endian." IBM mainframes are also
big-endian. It is advantagous to deal with strings (text strings and BCD
encoded number strings [hint, hint, hint]) by assigning their addresses as
you would write them out on paper.
Memory looks the most natural when laid out like this:
0 1 2 3 4 5 6 Byte Number (address), growing left to right.
+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+
| A | | S | T | R | I | N | G | | O | F | | T | E | X | T |
+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+
In this second layout, if you want to consider a pair of adjacent bytes as
a 16-bit integer, it is most natural to give the high-order byte the lowest
address.
Why is the 68000 a big-endian design? My theory has been that Motorola didn't
want to be accused of copying a DEC architecture. Notwithstanding this
difference, there are many similarities between them.

Subject: [Q] Performa 450 crash on FKEY 3
A friend of mine has a Macintosh Performa 450 (with a 14" Apple RGB
monitor) running Norwegian System (H1-) 7.1P5. When he tries to make a
screen dump using Cmd-Shift-3, he gets a system error message like "Finder:
unimplemented trap".
This happens every time, whether extensions are on or off, also when he has
booted from his (write protected) Utility diskette, also when he has booted
>From the hard disk but are using a copy of the System file found on the
Utility diskette. We have also tried resetting the PRAM, both by the
standard Option-Cmd-P-R and later using TechTool 1.0.6, with no success.
Out of curiosity, I compared the FKEY 3 resource sizes in the System on the
Performa Utility diskette and in the System (H1-7.1) on my Macintosh LC;
they were 998 and 1132, respectively. We have not tried to copy my LC FKEY
3 into his Performa System (yet), but might try it if no other solution
shows up.
If you have (access to) a Performa 450, I'd be pleased if you'd try the
Cmd-Shift-3 combination, and tell me ([email protected]) whether you
get the screen dump (and the click sound) or the system error. If you get
the screen dump (especially), I'd also like to know which System version
you're using. If you first get the system error, and then find THE
SOLUTION, please let me know the details. If I get any reports at all, I'll
try to put together, and submit, a "compilation".

Subject: Apollo 1.0 problems [Q]
I was just checking out Apollo 1.0 as an application launcher and default
directory assignment utility. Unfortunately it seems to cause problems on
my system (Quadra 700, System 7.1, all non-Apple extensions except Apollo
and InterSLIP off). The computer crashes fairly regularly when Eudora or
Turbogopher (through SLIP) are running and Apollo is used to launch another
application. Likewise it doesn't seem to get along with MPW 3.3.
Hasn't Apollo been around for a while and should be more stable? Do others
have similar problems? Is it still supported by the programmer? It doesn't
look like I am going to register it as it is. Any other ideas?
Thank you very much

I am considering purchasing a Backup Tape system and a External Hard Drive.
Do I have to buy items that are specifically for the Macintosh or can I buy
these items from any source, any PC dealer, as long as they have a SCSI
connection???
Why do I ask? All Mac products are purchased through a local monopoly that
ensures that there is a quantum leap in prices between Mac items and
similar PC items. I can see paying 'more' for a Mac computer, but why
should a backup tape or an external hard drive be more expensive.
Thanks to anyone who has had experience with these things and can fill me in.
P.S. Can I use the same Backup Tape unit to backup Mac and PCs???

Subject: Disk Label Removal (Q)
Having probably exhausted the topic of floppy condoms (Let me hear an
amen, brothers and sisters!), I feel moved to address that other serious
problem of our times -- floppy labels. Specifically, their removal.
After a bunch of recent updates, I found myself this evening with a whole
mess of floppy disks to be recycled. Have you noticed, by the way, that
updates now come on HD disks, and you can't use the previous DD disks to
make your legal archival backups on? This stuff is getting fatter than I
am, and I don't mean 68K/PPC friendly. But I digress.
My first step in floppy recycling is label removal. I can't recall where
I read the tip, but I've found lighter fluid to be a cheap and generally
reliable method of label removal. Put a little fluid on the label, rub it
around, and let it sit for maybe fifteen minutes. Label generally peels
right off afterwards with little or no residue. A colleague caught me at
the process last year, and I explained its advantages, and she said "But
I don't smoke!" Hmm. Your tuition dollars at work.
Anyway. With some forty disks to recycle, I got an up close and personal
relationship with the various labels. Symantec's are real easy to remove.
I can peel them off without lighter-fluid treatment and only need apply
a little juice afterwards for residual glue. Wiped up with Kleenex. The
flat worst were Apple's System 7.01 installation disks. Those puppies
refused to surrender. One lighter-fluid treatment wouldn't budge them, so
I did another. The labels came off, but the glue stayed. Three or more
subsequent treatments with lighter fluid, followed each time by Kleenex
wipe, were necessary to get the disks non-tacky to touch. Whew! Apple
is truly sincere about its labels.
Which begs the obvious question. Granted that lighter fluid is cheap and
mostly effective in label removal. Is there a superior method for what
I'd call problem labels like Apple's?

Subject: Flickering Fish Underbellies and Dancing Memory Chips
This is a follow up question to a problem I have been having with my
screen. I have more information but have not yet been able to figure out
what the problem is, never mind find a solution...
I have a MacIIci, 8MB (8*1MB) RAMdoubled to 16MB (the problem existed
before I bought RAMdoubler) and a 14" trinitron screen. I do not use a
graphics card.
The problem occurs with certain grey shades when my monitor is set to 256
colours. The underbellies of the grey screen saver fish (and no other
fish), the legs on the chip in the memory control panel icon Certain icons,
background patterns, all flicker. This occurs no matter where the fish swim
or where the icon is placed. It is particulary noticable on the fish which
seem to have developed some strange grey fungus blotches instead of being
smooth and silvery.
THIS PROBLEM DISAPPEARS WHEN I CHANGE TO 256 GREYS!!!
I thought it might be some software connected to the definition of colours,
but I have no idea what does that. I tried replacing control panels
(monitors, colours, general) and preferences (finder) but no luck so far.
Someone mentioned that they had the same problem that went away when they
replaced a bad graphics card, but I am not using a graphics card. Could my
SIMMS be doing this to me? My gut feeling says SOFTWARE PROBLEM, but what
do I know....
If anyone out there has an inkling of what is wrong I'd really appreciate
hearing from you. For instance: It only happens to greys, but there is no
problem when I move from colour to greys....why would this be??
Thanks for your help in advance,

Wow take a powermac ass $100 worth of software and your almost half as fast

Ahhh now I recognize them they are the people that pay hackers to look

SIGH such things are depressing. Any highschool student with a 386sx

setup httpd servers, mailing lists, etc.
Anyone that things a $10k internet node with a mac interface admin is

I have one and I love it. It's fast (as fast as a Q800 I'm told) enough to
keep up with both me and my TIA/InterSLIP connection, easily expandable,

I've got a Performa 630CD (68LC040 instead of 68040 is the main difference).
I think it's one of the finest computers I've ever had the pleasure to work
on... and I'm a computer professional (frequent use of PCs, Macs, a variety
of Unix workstations, minis, and a few mainframes for the last 15 years).
It's built well, it performs solidly and QUICKLY, it's upgradable to
the PowerPC, and it was cheap (relatively speaking).
No, I don't work for Apple. I'm just feeling like I've made a VERY good
purchase. The crime is that Apple's well deserved reputation for product
shortages has hit this machine also.... my local dealer is telling
prospective customers not to expect to see one until after Christmas.

I used to use Full Impact (and FullWrite, but that's another story), and
finally replaced it with ClarisWorks because FI is not 32-bit clean.
I've found the spreadsheet module in CW more than adequate for my uses
(mainly keeping track of students' grades, and some simple personal
recordkeeping). YMMV.
