Subject: Autoplay Audio CD's
The new quicktime 2.5 has a neat little setting allowing you to auto start
an audio CD. For some reason, on my P6200, this feature does not work if
there is an external SCSI disk hooked up. It will start to play the CD on
startup, but will stop when the external disk mounts. If I turn of the
external disk, there's no problem.
Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
I haven't tried playing with the SCSI ids yet... will update if the status
changes.

Is there something better for auto power on/off that Apple's 1.0 control

I'm looking for a software solution, so PowerKey probably won't help.

Bzzt! Wrong. These guys are not sharks. Their demos are clearly marked as
such. The Emailer 1.1v3 download is fully functional and *free*. You're
too cynical. Claris deserves praise not sneers for this splendid move.
Oh yeah -- the program. It's so good that I gladly bought it several
months back, and so did lots of my customers, friends and family. It was
designed to specifications from Guy Kawasaki, who needed an email client
that could handle all his mail and do everything he wanted with it. I
reckon that if it's good enough for Guy, it's good enough for me.
PS -- I saw someone else say that drag and drop is the only advantage
Emailer has over Eudora Light. C'mon! There's about a dozen Emailer
features you can't do and don't get in Eudora Light (which is OK, since
it's free). Spend a little time exploring Emailer, is my advice.

It's a new feature which Qualcomm foolishly decided to make the default. I
didn't like it either, for the same reason.
Call up the Special -> Settings... menu, and select "Attachments".
Turn off the "Receive MIME digests as attachments" option.

Matt,
In reply directly to you and to Info-Mac for everyone else about the GV
modem on 68000 macs.
My sister had (now it's moved on to my brother's girlfriend) my ole trusty
Mac SE. For the longest time I used the Teleport FullFax and just now
(after it blew [lightening] after at least 5 faithful years I think) we've
got a GlobalVillage Teleport Gold II running on it. It runs and works fine.
Ever since I bought that FullFax 2400 I've bought GV modems ever since. I'm
now upto a PB 5300c with a Powerport Platinum Pro. I'm very happy with it.
The SE is the dual floppy model (low density) with a 160mb hd added in, 4mb
ram, and 68030 accelerator now. Still kicking, running b/w games, word
5.1a, aol 2.5.
Hope this helps,

I own a Mac LC630 running 7.5.3 rev.2, 20MB RAM and I had a similar
problem. I wrote to MacUser and sent the following:
-------------------------------
Hi all,
I've got a very weird problem I hope you can solve.
I own a Mac LC630 (no FPU), 20MB Ram running MacOS 7.5.3. Well, few days
ago I subscribed an Internet connection with my local provider; back home I
installed the MacTCP (T1-2.0.6) and the Config PPP (T1-2.1.4) controls in
the control panels folder, the PPP extension (T1-2.5) in the extensions
folder, the MacTCP DNR in the root level of my System Folder, the MacTCP
Prep and the PPP Preferences documents in the Preferences folder.
What happened, then?
After rebooting, the MacTCP control disappeared, better, many of its Finder
flags were altered, as well as the file type and creator!!!. Checking with
the "Get info for..." option of the Norton Disk Doctor 3.2.1:
1) Finder flags: the control is Boundled and Inited, but after rebooting
these boxes becomes unchecked, and the Invisible and the No INITs boxes are
checked;
2) the file type is "cdev", but after rebooting becomes "????";
3) The file creator is "ztcp", but after rebooting becomes "ZTCP" (!!!).
Restoring the original settings, I have the MacTCP control appear, with no
data damage but not loaded at startup. All my attempts have been useless:
1) I scanned all my disks with Disinfectant 3.6: no virus present;
2) I've checked my hard disk with the Norton Disk Doctor 3.2.1 and
optimized it with the Norton Speed Disk 3.2.1;
3) There was no extensions conflict: I rebooted either with only MacOS
7.5.3 Apple extensions and with no extensions at startup: the same results;
4) I reinstalled the OS;
5) I installed the OS on a ZIP cartridge and booted from my ZIP drive:
MacTCP was altered again;
6) I installed older versions of MacTCP control, with no results;
7) I called my Internet provider whose engineers called on; they took new
software, expecially new preference files and a new MacTCP DNR, in case
mine were damaged: no results; they couldn't understand what was happening
and suggested me to install Open Transport (!!!): but why, since *I* have
installed all the software we are concerning about on a friend of mine's
Mac LC630 running the same version of MacOS!!!
8) as last try, I disabled the MacTCP control by the Now Startup Manager
6.0.1 utility, rebooted keeping the space bar pressed and the Startup
Manager opened before loading all extensions and controls; I enabled the
MacTCP to load and pressed OK: the MacTCP loaded well and worked!!! But the
problem was not solved, unless always rebooting that way!
Now, I've find a way to fool my Mac around: I've only changed the file
creator from "ztcp" to "ZTCP" and the MacTCP control remains untouched
after reboot!!!
What on earth...?
I'd be very happy if you could help me, I'm really getting crazy!
Sincerly.

-------------------------
The very important thing is that there was no Open Transport component
installed!!! I also tried to reboot with no startup items but:
MacTCP control,
Config PPP control,
PPP extension;
with no avail! Furthermore, there was no Network Software Selector on my
hard drive because *I never installed any component of Open Transport*.
Chris Breen replied again:

The problem was solved by re-installing the System!!! Now I guess all this
happens when some component of OT and some of MacTCP/PPP are installed at
the same time. Even if you never installed them both, reinstall the System
and it should work.
Hope this helps.

It's not an application problem but more a system software related
problem. When you save information, the data may reside in the disk cache
for some time before it is written to the disk (the larger the cache
setting, the longer the data will remain in the cache - at least thats my
understanding of it). If you Mac freezes/crashes/burns before the
information in the cache is saved to disk, you'll lose that data.
There are a number of 3rd party shareware extensions/control panels
that will allow you to *flush the cache* on a more regular basis - either
at automatic intervals or by a simple keystroke combination. Two that come
to mind (and are posted in the Info-Mac archives) are Autoflush (an
extension) and CacheSaver (a control panel).

When you installed Open Transport, the installer put a folder in the root
directory of you hard drive called "Apple Extras" Inside that folder is a
small application called "Network Software Selector" Use it and select
"Classic Networking" This will make MacTCP visible again and, if you didn't
remove anything connected with it, allow you to go on as you were before
you installed Open Transport

Use the Network Software Selector to re-enable Classic Networking. The OT
readme should tell you where to look for it and explain its function. If
you've deleted it, you may need to reinstall OT to straighten everything
out.

Dennis:
This is the third or fourth time just this past week I have seen/heard of
this identical problem.
You can try using ResEdit and changing the 'Invisible' attribute of the
file to visible and then trashing it - this may or may not work for you.
It didn't the one time I tried it on a client's machine.
Your best-bet solution is to 'go off and leave it' and by that I mean doing
a *clean install* of a new system. The clean install is very important,
otherwise you'll just be reinstalling some of your system software in the
same old folder and won't have accomplished anything.
First, drag the Finder out of the System folder and leave it temporarily in
the Trash. Then, rename the System folder something else, like 'Old Sys
Folder'. Now, when you install a new System, it'll create a new System
Folder with all new, clean system software and you have effectively 'gone
off and left' that nasty old invisible MacTCP where it can't cause you more
problems.
BTW, be sure to install a new copy of MacTCP v2.0.6. You can download it

MacTCP becomes an invisible file after you install Open Transport
(as does the Network control panel). Just use the Network Software
Selector application that is also installed with OT (Apple Extras folder)
and select Classic networking. Then restart your Mac.

* I don't think Open Transport is the cause of your modem failure
(version 1.1.1 works with the 6200 line). I have the same modem presently
hooked up to my 660 and have had no problems with the exception of OT/PPP
which did fail. Open Transport 1.1.1 and FreePPP 2.5 v2, on the other
hand, have worked very well together.

Subject: Mac files to IBM server thru Netscape?
Greetings all!
Being considered a handy fellow with computer stuff, I've been given the
task of minding my company's Web site, which is being run from their very
own, Windows NT server. This is a bit deeper of a task than I've tackled
before. I soon figured out the basics, even correcting a few problems they
didn't know existed, (like anonymous "read, write & delete" access to the
entire web directory... yikes!). But now this budding Webmaster has
(surprise surprise) run into a couple of snags that FAQ's don't seem to
quite answer.
We're a service bureau, and we currently receive customer files (mostly
Mac) on a separate, dedicated BBS system (using Telefinder). I thought:
"what if people could FTP their files to us right through Netscape? Isn't
that what that 'Upload File...' command is for?" I've since set up a test
FTP link on our website, but the trouble is that the server converts these
to a PC text file, chucking away all the resource fork goodies, etc. This
works OK for .sit files and the like - they seem to unstuff perfectly - but
what if someone just wants to send a normal, unstuffed Mac file? It doesn't
work.
I notice that I can access the server, through Appletalk, from our local
ethernetworked Macs, and can copy stuff in and out of its ftp directory as
much as I like - it acts just like another Mac folder. So the server can
"hold" Mac files under those circumstances. Can I (and our customers)
achieve this effect through Netscape as well, with Mac files making it
intact to, and off of, our server? I hope so, as people don't always want
to stuff their files if they're small to begin with.
Thanks!

Hi All,
I use Speech Recoginiton with my 7100/80 AV via plaintalk mic into the
sound-in port. Shortly, I plan to start using the computer for hard disk
recording and must run a mixer into the mac for sound input.
To avoid constant swapping of cables, I would like to find a way to have
both the plaintalk mic and the mixer going into the mac at the same time.
Is there an _inexpensive_ nubus solution that will give me another audio

input from the mic and the mixer?
Reply by e-mail and I will post a summary to the list. Thank you in

Your friend doesn't know what he's talking about. Apple's sound-out=
connectors are just as standard as on any other computer or audio equipment=
-- they're standard 1/8" stero plugs, same as used on walkman headphones,=
PC sound cards, and on stereo equipment since before Macs were created. =
The plug on my KOSS computer speakers fit into the audio jack of both my=
old LC (later upgraded to LC III) and my current PM 7200 just fine. Never=
had any problems.
However, I do remember seeing your problem on other, non-computer audio=
equipment. Sometimes a stereo headphone plug doesn't make a proper=
connection if pushed in all the way... But if you pull it out a bit or take=
more care when pushing it in, you can usually feel when it clicks into the=
right position. Same thing happened with the old 1/4" headphone plugs &=
jacks (remember those?). The manufacturers of those mini headphone plugs &=
jacks might even do it on purpose, to ensure that a particular plug will=
never be too short to work in a particular jack.
Perhaps your friend is confusing the Mac's audio-out jack with the audio-in=
jack on AV Macs -- the Apple PlainTalk Microphone uses a longer plug than=
the typical cheap mikes.

A possibility:
there are two knobs on the back of monitors (mine at least) that can be
turned with a screwdriver. one of these might be tint? or it just might be
the image position on the monitor. i don't really know.
i do know that if the monitor flickers different tints, not just stays on
one, then you have a different problem.
