I have had a similar problem, albeit with Groupwise.

I posted an article about my experiences some weeks ago (6 Nov).

In brief: in order to get the digest as one long file, send the command
set info-mac shorthdr
to your friendly list-server.

[You can still do this, but not the same way. At least, not for most of you.
Do this. Go to the info-mac www page, http://www.pht.com/info-mac/, and go
to the digest page and then to the starnine list subscription page. From
there,
unsubscribe and then resubscribe with the short header option. -Gordon]

Greetings all. I have been asked to set up a system wherein
each of our department's employees can access his/her vacation
days log (in the form of a MS Word document). The idea is to have
a document per individual, password protected so that onlyt they
can see it. The only way I think this can be done is to create
a folder for person and place the information therein, and them assign
the appropiate user, however, this seems highly innefective.

Does anyone have any better ideas>

Thanks.

All right, get this. Once in awhile, My mac will just freeze up. It
doesn't put any dialog boxes, it doesn't dump into MacsBug, and it does
not go into MacsBug when I hit Command-Power Key.

Also when I turn on with Extensions OFF, the same thing happens after I
try to open any windows in the Finder.

So, there is something wrong, which is supressed by some extension, yet
manages to happen sometimes.

It has frozen during reading a PDF file in Netscape, and when I ran
TextureEyes (A quickdraw 3D demo type program.)

Disk First Aid reports my startup disk is damaged. I am unable to repair
it because when I start up with a minimalist system folder on the CD or a
Zip Disk, it crashes like when extensions are off.

I have a PowerMac 7200/90 running Sys. 7.5.

Help!

Subject: GlobalVillage modems uncompatible with MacPlus?

I heard that MacPlus isn't supported by GlobalVillage modems because of
incompatible serial port. I have been under the impression that almost any
modem can be connected to any mac but obviously this isn't quite true.

I don't know if GV modems are _totally_ uncompatible with the Plus or if
they work with some limitations concerning port speed, GV software etc.

What about GV modems on other 68000 macs like SE, Portable, Classic and
PowerBook 100? I have used succesfully a GV PowerPort/Gold on a PB100 and a
2400 DoveFax Desktop on a Plus.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Go to your settings (under the Special menu), and click on the attachment
icon. Then turn off "Receive MIME digests as attachments". That'll do it.

There is a setting, probably in the "Attachments" section, named something
like

"Receive MIME digests as attachments."

Uncheck this box to do what you want.

[I'm using Eudora Pro, hence the vagueness of details here.]

Martin,
In Eudora Lite 3.0 betas you can turn this on and off. To turn
this feature off, go into your settings, under "Attachments". Uncheck the
setting "Receive MIME digests as attachments". Eudora will now let you
read them in the way you remember from version 1.5.x.

Easy view should be able to open the attached mailbox, it' just a mailbox
like any other. By the way, I think this is one of the most usefull
innovations in the new 3.0 version, and the only reason I ever reply to IML
posts anymore.

> Any idea why this is happening?

Because the IML uses the correct MIME encoding to send the digest, and
Eudora now recognizes it.

Yes. In the Attachments section of the Settings dialog, "Receive MIME
digests as attachments" is checked.

Now, personally I am a big fan of this feature (I wonder why), especially
because you can reply to the messages or save them in different mailboxes
if you want to hold onto a copy. Now, if the moderators (Hi Gordon) would
fix the digest software to save the 2 or 3 MIME headers in the individual
messages so that special characters and formatting make it through, and
make the attachment line a URL (yes, you can do that and still use your
mirror site), I would be overjoyed!

OK, if you really want to be a luddite :-)

1. Turn off the checkbox in the Attachments settings.
2. When the message comes in (and it will be one big message), simply drag
it to the Finder. It will be saved in the Finder as one big text file.
3. Drag that file onto Easy View.

Blech.

Subject: Invisible MacTCP

I had installed Open Transport 1.1.1 and OT/PPP 1.0 on a Mac Performa 6115.
At that time, I lost all telecommunications possibilities with my Geoport Gold
modem. I removed all of the Transport and PPP files, and rebooted from my
former System. When I tried to use the modem again, it said I needed MacTCP.
I got my old copy and tried to move it into my Control Panels folder, but
a message said: "An invisible file like the one you are trying to install
already exists." So, of course, I couldn't copy my old MacTCP into the Control
Panels. Does anyone know how to remove such an invisible file, or is there
a work-around to get the MacTCP back again. Thanks in advance. Dennis

Subject: LaserWriter 4/600 and System 7.1.1

Hi all,

I am going to be buying an Apple LaserWriter 4/600 PS soon. I downloaded
the product information file for it and noticed something that I have a
question about. It states that this printer requires System 7.1.1. I
*think* that was the version number for System 7.1 Pro wasn't it?
Anyway, I'm going to be using this with a IIsi running system 7.1 (plus
others). I haven't been able to locate a 7.1 to 7.1.1 updater. Can
anyone tell me how or where to find this seemingly minor update. I
really need to use this printer with this IIsi and I definitely don't
want to upgrade it to 7.5 (major overkill for that system). Any help
will be *greatly* appreciated. Also, if anyone cares to inform me on why
this printer requires that version of the OS and what features it has,
I'd be more than happy to listen.

Thanks!!

I have a PowerMac 7600 running MS Word 6.0.

If I save and close a document and sometimes later my computer crashes, the
version that I saved is not saved and the recovered version is an older
version. This is costing me time and frustration.

Is this a known problem in Word?
Would updating to 6.0.1 help?
Is there an updater from 6.0 to 6.0.1?

Subject: Muffled Startup Sound...

Hi all!

Concerning the muffled startup sound...

I, too have had this problem on my LC630 ever since the day I
bought it.

To explain a bit more precisely:

At startup (after either a restart or after a real shutdown), the
startup sound is often (but not always) cut off a fraction of a
second after it has begun.

This happens no matter where the sound is coming from (i.e.
internal speaker, external speakers plugged in the back,
headphones plugged in the front or when both back and front
sockets are used simultaneously).

There are *no other problems* with sound at any other time that
I have found (games, CD, TV, Quicktime movies, alerts etc.)

I have not an inkling of why this should happen, but since there
are no adverse affects I have not bothered at all about it.

Anyone with any ideas?

Subject: My Drives keep dying

Here's the scoop:
1. I have a Centris 660AV, 36 megs ram, 7.5.3
2. I had an Apple 230 meg internal that the controller went bad on. I
couldn't re-format the drive, had to chunk it.
3. Just had my remaining external Apple 170 meg go bad on me, same
symptoms. Cannot re-format. I got weird errors (unimplemented trap
errors), finder memory erros, etc.
4. So I backed it up with the intention of re-formatting and upgrading
to system 7.5.5, but after backing up, if wouldn't take a format.

Could I have a bad controller on the mother board or could it be another
prob with my motherboard?

I also have a APC power supply that SHOULD take care of the brownouts I
have at my house.

Thanks!

Subject: NEEDED: login/access control s/w for rental computers

please forgive me for using so many cross posts (especially if this
request doesnt belong in this newsgroup), but im up against a rather
tight deadline (less than 4 weeks, signed/sealed/delivered). i tried
sending a post earlier, but it appears to have been lost in the ether.

were looking for software for a desktop publishing environment that
will enable a user to login to a specific computer, use apps or browse
the net, use a printer, and then logout. upon logging out, the software
would send the data from the rental session to a database (e.g., fm pro)
and send an invoice to the printer. kinko's is using something
*exactly* like what we need (and yes, we're in the process of contacting
them, too)

this would end our current practice of manually noting the time the user
began the session, as well as automate the invoice process. the
database would be a nice feature as well. reason we need automation:
were expecting upwards of 50,000 clients per year, with perhaps 10-20%
renting machines (especially for the net browsing).

are there any shrinkwrap solutions that would allow us to do this? weve
considered several options, including using disc tracey from wayzata
to build our own.

weve also looked at apples at ease for workgroups, but dont know if
we can script "at ease" to handle the invoice side of things.
another alternative: script fm pro to do this stuff, and tie it to
apples at ease for workgroups for access control -- opinions on the
preceding are welcome.

here are some other tools weve found, but dont know if theyre
appropriate:
- NetControl by International Business Software at (408)522-8000
-A.M.E. (Access Managed Environment) by Casady & Greene Inc --
http://www.casadyg.com/
- MacAdministrator and MacPrefect at 508.543.6922 (didnt note the mfr)
- Empower by Magna (408)879-7900
- Mac Control by BDW Software, and like i said
- Disc Tracey - Programmer's Detective by Wayzata Technology, Inc.
Description: 100Mb of source code and utilities including Assembler,
Basic, HyperCard, C, Pascal, etc. (218) 326-0597

and most importantly, the solution would need to maintain the elapsed
time record for a session even if nscape (or some other application)
crashed the machine (it would be great if it would automatically suspend
charging for the length of time it took to recover from the crash).

any and all help, advice, and suggestions will be deeply appreciated.
and as i said in the last post (that evidently didnt make it to the
newsgroups; forgive me if this is a duplicate), ill give some of the
best land in the kingdom to the one who provides me with the solution!
(now all i have to do is find a kingdom, and figure out how to give some
of it away....)

best regards, and thanks in advance for your help

I have a seven month old StyleWriter 2500, that has prematurely failed. It
was bought in the US, but I have been using it here in Barbados , and the
printer will no longer even produce a self test print-out. The local Apple
dealer says the Logic Board is faulty, and a replacement will cost me more
than a new printer. They will not honour the warranty, as the unit was
bought stateside and not through them. Is there any reason to think the
power supply is at fault, as the Power adaptor was for 120v 60Hz, while
local supply is 120v 50Hz? A check on the output voltage of the adaptor
gives me over 15 v, compared with the design 13.5 v. I have frequently used
similar adaptors here in Barbados for modems, hard disks, answering
machines, etc. and have never encountered problems.

Any ideas?

Although most people seem to like it that way, the main solution pointed
out was to uncheck the box "Receive MIME digests as attachments" under

Alternatively, Peter Van Avermaet suggested to send the command

My 7500 has an almost inaudible truncated startup sound on a cold
start, but it does not affect the sound in the finder or any application.
A restart command, or a reboot without powering down gives a normal startup
sound. It has been like that since I purchased it.

Dear MacDudes,

I'm hoping I can can call on some of your knowledge here to help me out.
I'm looking at purchasing a used 16" Mac monitor (trinitron), however it
has a slight green tint to the screen. I've come across this before on
other machines, and appears to come about as a result of the rear monitor
port on the mac being damaged, or is it? In those cases I could wiggle the
cable around a bit and it would correct the display colour. I have seen
them go both orange and green and it didn't appear to be anything serious.
However, before I purchase this one I want to make sure that it's not a
dud, or that I can atleast fix it with little trouble and expense. I've
only checked it on the machine it's on, a Centris, and the monitor works
fine except for the slight colour tint. I've tried adjusting the
colour/brightness but this will not change the green. I've connected a 14"
screen to the same machine and it's fine, so I know it's not the gamma
settings on the machine itself.

Any ideas and advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Monib
