Subject: [!] Slight delays in posting files
Hi all,
This is your Friendly Neighborhood Archivist here. I want to let people
know that I am a little behind on getting files posted at the moment. I
have been ill for the past week and have not really been up to my regular
regimen of archiving. (And how frustrating too, it was in the 90s here in
LA and I was stuck at home.) I am glad to report that I am feeling much
better and that by Monday morning things should be all caught up.
One thing to keep in mind - we will have severe space restrictions until
the move to our new machine, where we have all kinds of space waiting for
us. While I cannot offer a date when this move will be complete, I do
assure you that progress is being made and we are not far from completion.
This means that some of the larger uploads are being held until the move.
You will be informed by email if this is the case. I ask that if you have a
2 MB or larger demo, graphic, sound file, or similar upload to please hang
on to it for a short time. (Replacing a large file already on the site with
a similarly sized one obviously does not contribute to the problem.)
Thanks for everyone's patience on both matters. My apologies to all the
cities east of me who I have seen on the news already buried in snow. Don't
worry, the weather here is beginning to cool down into the 50s and 60s.

Introducing StartOnce version 1.0 .
StartOnce helps you to control your Startup Items.
When you start your Mac for the first time on any day, StartOnce
will launch any items found in the "StartOnce Items" folder. On
subsequent restarts, these items will be skipped.
Installation is easy as StartOnce will create the "StartOnce Items"
folder for you the first time it is run. All you have to do is to
decide which items you want launched once a day and place aliases to
them in this folder. Put an alias to StartOnce in your "Startup Items"
folder and you are ready to rock-and-roll.
Shareware 10$US or 5 pounds UK.
This program requires System 7 to run.
Please include this on CD collections if you wish.
Best Regards,
Steve Smith

Its easy- when you load Desktop Patterns, press the Option key, and the

Hmmmm. That's a head-scratcher.

Bottom line:
You don't need to change anything inside the Mac when adding an
external SCSI device; just have a terminator on the end of the
chain.
You raise a good point, though: why does this work? I think that the
answer lies in the black art known as "SCSI Voodoo". SCSI Voodoo is
invoked whenever:
a) SCSI chains don't work when they should, or (rarely)
b) SCSI chains do work when they shouldn't.
This seems to be a example of b). Though there may be something
buried in the SCSI spec that describes this behaviour. I read it once
and it took me days to return to normal existence. The ultimate SCSI
truisms in my universe are:
1) Use good cables.
2) If it works, leave it alone.
3) If it doesn't work try reorganizing according to SCSI rules. Try
sensible changes (like the order of devices, new cables, etc) and
then try absurd changes (like swapping the connection of two cables
to one device).
4) If it still doesn't work, try ignoring SCSI rules, that sometimes
helps.
Yours truly,
Ethan Benatan
[email protected]
ps- I think the SCSI spec may have something special to say about the
initiator (SCSI speak for the controlling device, i.e. motherboard)
that explains all this. Sorry but I don't know what it is.
pps- oh yeah, don't forget rule 0: TURN IT ALL OFF before you mess
with the cables.

I have had Apple Guide installed since day one, though I never used

In the last version (with 7.5.5 install), and now with the new 2.1
version just released, all I get in the menu - right hand side of the
bar with the "?" in the light bulb - are the balloon help and Finder
Shortcuts. I get no other options, but I need it for OT 1.1.1, among

What have I done/forgotten to do? Do I have to "turn it on"?

Subject: American Heritage Dictionary
I recently purchased the American Heritage Talking Dictionary (AHTD) on
CD-ROM. There are a number of major bugs with this product which people
should be aware of.
1) The installer will not recognize newer versions of Quicktime,
Powerplug, etc. In order to install the program you have to drag these
extensions out in to a disabled folder, load the software (which will
install the older versions) and then throw out the older versions. You
can do this most easily by using extensions manager and only loading
essential system software and the CD-ROM driver. This will disable
quicktime etc. Once you trash the old quicktime versions installed by AHTD
you can restart and the most recent versions of Quicktime etc will be
installed.
2) If you are using SpeedDoubler BEWARE!!! AHTD installs an
extension called Threadslib which conflicts with SpeedDoubler and causes
unimplemeted trap errors when you try to empty your trash. Apple is
apparently not aware of this problem, since when I called them about it,
they told me that I needed to reinitialize my hard drive -- not a fun job.
Just trash threadslib -- AHTD seems to work just fine without it.
3) This last problem nearly caused me to lose my remaining hair.
When you try to print a Microsoft Word doc that uses the Times font, your
system will freeze. As you may have guessed the culprit is again AHTD. It
turns out that AHTD installs a suitcase in the system fonts folder which
directly conflicts with the Times font. The solution is to trash the AHTD
font suitcase. Unfortunately, you then lose the ability to see
pronunciation marks etc. Softkeys is apparently aware of this problem,
but does not have a patch.
Given the above problems, you might want to think twice about buying this
product. Once you get it working it's not too bad.

It's actually quite possible to watch TV at resolution 832x624. All you
have to do is to replace the picture with ID -16610(?) with a picture
filled with the transparent color. I have made such a picture that I can
mail to you if you're interested. Note you might get some noice in the
TV picture but I think it looks ok. The picture you get at 800x600 @
72Hz isn't very good though.

Subject: AT&T Worldnet (Q)
Folk, some questions and comments about AT&T's worldnet service.
Yes, I did write to AT&T. Twice. The answer I got did not make me feel
warm and fuzzy toward either their service or their people. So I thought
I'd check with my I-M colleagues.
I already have no-cost internet access at home and at the office. I am
looking for reasonable-cost access for the relatively rare times I am on
the road. No matter where in the country I wind up. AT&T as an ISP seemed
perfect.
I got the CD and brochure and became progressively unhappy. The AT&T network
is nationwide, but to access it from home is a toll call (via Bell Atlantic)
to Roanoke. No universal local access.
AT&T has an 800 number for those of us who are deprived, but $5/hr comes
to a not-so-free $25/mo for the otherwise free five hours per month of access.
And the "free" five hours per month is only for the first year? Gee, that
reminds me of a bunch of masterplastic come-ons I've received and ignored.
And why are those five hours per month "free" only if I use the service
for at least an hour per month? What happens if I don't?
And what is in AT&T's package? God alone knows. And She isn't saying. The
CD is remarkably uninformative. It is going to install something. I can
infer that "something" is at least PPP (but of what persuasion and of
what version?) and NetScape (but of what version?). How does this impact
Open Transport 1.1.1 and its ancillary files? I don't know what they are
doing, so I can't even imagine the impact.
I expect I can quit from WorldNet's default NetScape and use my usual
InterNet suspects (TN3270, Fetch, Gopher, Eudora, etc) until I tell PPP
to hang it up. It would have been nice if AT&T had said so.
And my hard drive must be named "Macintosh HD" lest things fall apart? Why?
Yes, that's the default name for desktop machine HDs. AT&T does not seem aware
that the default for portables is "PowerBook HD." Yes, I can rename the
fool thing. However, I would also have to de-install and re-install MicroSoft
Office. That's a fairly popular application system that is unfortunately
married to the name of the HD on which it is installed. Reinstalling Office
after an HD rename is nontrivial.
In addition, if anyone followed the installation instructions to the letter,
WorldNet would never be installed on any Macintosh. Restart with extensions
off before installing from the CD? Without the CD extension active, no Mac
will
ever see a CD.
I posed the above questions and observations to AT&T via e-mail. After seeing
that they boasted real live human help 24 hours a day, I sort of expected a
reply before a week passed. You're a silly goose, Bloom.
The reply I got was odd. I quote:
>I'm sorry to hear we aren't local access for you at the present time. We are
>continuing to add new numbers.
>
>Nonmembers of WorldNet can check our web page at

>AT&T WorldNet Customer Satisfaction
Do you notice the number of questions/concerns even mentioned, much less
answered? I checked the "wurd" site. The first thing I saw was a proud
announcement that it is now officially affiliated with AT&T WorldNet. I
spent a half hour snooping about the site without finding anything close
to what I wanted to know.
I'm still about half interested in WorldNet. It does seem less expensive
than calling my home-base ISP long distance from wherever I happen to be
the rare times I leave the wilds of Bleaksburg.
But I can't help feeling that AT&T still just doesn't get it. And that I
should maybe not get involved with those folk.
Should I go to the bother? Why?
Is there another ISP that would be better for my admittedly odd interest?

If anyone else has suffered from this virus, there are two solutions which
seem to offer protection:
1) go to the microsoft site (www.microsoft.com) and they have a virus
protection tool (do a search for Scanprot.dot or MW1222.doc). This claims
to protct you from macro virus infections and I WOULD RECOMMEND anyone that
is connected to a network getting hold of this. It seems that macros are a

2) Get a copy of Symantecs SAM (www.symantec.com). SAM detected that I had

I have seen places advertise old version of apps for sale for just this
purpose. However, I can't think of any offhand. The ads I am thinking of
were in the back of MacUser et.al., not on the web.
On the more general question:
I got my copy of Photoshop 3.0.5 in the same way. I found a copy of 1.0.7
still shrinkwrapped for $50, and then upgraded it to 3.0 for $10. Once
upgraded, the older version is "dead". It cannot be transferred to another
person, nor can it be upgraded again. According to the letter of the
license agreement, it should be destroyed.
So, if you can find an earlier version of Photoshop still unregistered, or
if someone will transfer their licensed copy to you, then you can upgrade
it as you would like. If your friend Bob upgrades his copy of 3.0 to 4.0,
he cannot give you his copy of 3.0, nor could you upgrade it even if he did.

If the other person has *not* bought an upgrade, and doesn't plan to, then
yes, it is legal for him to sell you software that he doesn't want anymore.
And by buying the software from him, you also gain the right to purchase an
upgrade for that product.
Just make sure you get the following:
- a paper with his signature, stating that he is transferring ownership
of the software product to you, and giving his name & address and the
product's serial number.
- the original floppy disks or CD-ROMs.
- the manuals.
You may need one or more of these as proof, in case the software publisher
checks their records and finds that your serial number was already
registered to somebody else.
If the other person has bought an upgrade, then he CANNOT sell the old
version -- essentially the upgrade replaces or becomes part of the original
purchase, and they cannot be separated. He can only sell the old version
if he includes all upgrades that he bought for it. But that's his worry,
not yours -- you won't be doing anything illegal if you don't know he's got
an upgrade.
Of course, if the other guy bought a brand-new copy instead of an upgrade,
then he legally owns two separate copies of the software, one old and one
new, and he's entitled to give or sell the old copy and keep the new one.

Ed,
You might try looking at Surplus Software's web site, although they
carry mostly (IBM) PC stuff. I got MS Excel 4.0 for the Mac for $12.95,
shrinkwrapped (and I could upgrade at a discount if I had a fast enough
Mac!). Their URL is:
http://www.surplusdirect.com/
As far as it being legal to buy old software from others in order to use
it to upgrade, that's exactly what I did to buy and upgrade from PC
Pagemaker 4.0 to 5.0. After a friend sold his used version 4 to me, I
called Aldus (it's now owned by Adobe). They mailed me a form to fill
out that my friend had to sign, I mailed it back, and then went out and
bought the upgrade version. It's probable that Adobe has the same
policy.

From: Ed Wright JPL
I need some reference advice concerning a Mac fortran program.
The program is a port of a Unix program which access a database. The
program and all libraries are in FORTRAN 77. Part of the program's
function is to assemble an SQL like string for database searches.
Due to the size of the databases these query strings can have as many
as 2000 characters.
The Unix program has an "edit the command string" function which is a
pipe to the users editor of choice (vi, ick, or emacs, YEAH!). Mac
does not do pipes.
The Language System fortran package includes an example for placing a
dialog window on the screen and returning any text to the user as a
string. Problem...the string is limited to 255 characters.
Does anyone have an idea on how I can get a 1500-2000 character
string returned to a fortran program using only Language Systems
fortran?

The other thing I don't like about it is that although you DO have the drag

There is a software called Metamorphosis Pro 2.04 which is able to convert=
Macintosh fonts into Type 1 PostScript, Type 3 PostScript & TrueType for=
the PC & NeXT environment. It can even convert bitmap/PostScript fonts into=
TrueType fonts! I am not sure whether there is a newer version.
Hope this helps.

Subject: Desktop rebuilding chaos
Hey, thanks to everyone who emailed me halping me with my desktop rebuild
problem. The problem was that I would get a crash during rebuilding the
desktop every time, and the computer would start rebuidling the desktop on
every startup with no confirmation. I was only able to start up off of
CD-ROM or floppy for a while. Here's how I eventually fixed it: I took
all my control panels out and put them in a temp folder outside the system
folder, except for macintosh easy open. I restarted, the desktop rebuilt
without confirmation again, but didn't crash this time. When I restarted
AGAIN, it rebuilt again, but no crash again. Then it stopped insisting on
rebuilding the desktop. Yay. All my files can find their creator apps and
my icons are back as well. Double yay. Thanks all...

FreePPP allows you to connect to an internet ISP [internet service
provider] via a PPP [Point to Point Protocol] connection using your modem.
In the MacTCP or TCP/IP control panel, you would select "FreePPP" as your
connection method, then when an internet application like NetScape tries to
open a TCP connection, FreePPP will dial your modem and connect to your ISP.
You're probably using it to establish the connection over which you send
this mail.

>What's cookie in Netscape.
A webserver can send a "magic cookie" to your browser, which is stored in a
file within your browser prefs folder. These cookies can be used to tell a
webserver if you've been there before, what your prefs are, etc. Some
people view this as a violation of privacy, others don't. If you want to
avoid this exchange of information, you can do a couple of things.
1. delete the cookie file with every reboot; there's an AppleScript in the
info-mac archives that does this. Put it in your Startup Items folder, and
then every time you boot that file will go away.
2. Lock the cookie file; that way websites can send you all the cookies
they want, but none will be actually saved to the file in your prefs folder.

CallerID [available from your friendly local phone company] will tell you
the phone line from which many incoming phone calls originated. There is
software available that will let you use your modem to log this information.
MOre info available here:
>How can i add sound to my Homepage?
Well, if you want the sound to play while someone is looking at the page,
then you can add a midi file to it. Real Audio will play sound. You could
put links to standard sound files on your page for the browser to download
and play on their local system. There are various browser plugins that
enable sound.

>i heard that OT doesn't work very
>well with NN3.0 (it crashes sometimes) is it true?
OT works great for me on both my 8100/80 here at work running Ethernet and
talking to Novell servers as well as on my 6100/80 at home using OT/PPP to
connect to the net.
Netscape Navigator 3.0 in my experience is none too stable in any case.
You'll find that "it crashes sometimes" is a pretty good description of
Navigator's behavior in any system configuration.
>what's OpenDoc for?
A new paradigm for computer use. Currently, computing is
application-centric. A user starts up Excel to work with numbers, Word to
work with words, and Photoshop to work with pictures. Then she combines
all those pieces in PageMaker, but if the pictures need to change, then
it's back to PhotoShop. The OpenDoc model is document-centric. The user
creates a single document, then inserts all the parts they need to work
with, using smaller software components. Editing a particular piece can be
done in place. But it's more than that.
Apple has OpenDoc demo CDs available. Send email to [email protected].
They explain and demonstrate OpenDoc in greater detail. It's cool.

Boy, I don't know. Maybe a language designator? Maybe a beta designator
[though I've not seen one like that before]? If I had to guess I'd say
you're using the Belgian OS or something like that. I can't connect to
apple's website right now to see what that might mean.
>what's Frontier?
Frontier is a fast scripting environment that supports scripts written in
any OSA-compliant language [AppleScript, UserTalk, Perl, Tcl]. It's got a
built-in object-database storage system that is faster than the Mac file
system. It's a high-powered CGI development environment. It's got a rich
verb set that any OSA language can call. It's more. It fully rocks, and
is just about the coolest piece of Mac software I've seen. It does a lot
right out of the box, and with a little effort, you can extend it to do
just about anything. It's free, and is supported by a wide community
around the world.

Right next to the slot, on the motherboard, it says "ROM SIMM", at least on
the IIci I just looked at. It's also empty on the machine I just looked at.
This slot is putatively to allow Apple to ship ROM upgrade SIMMs that would
replace the ROM on the motherboard. To my knowledge, no such ROM upgrade
SIMM ever shipped, so effectively, the slot is there to take up space.
Some machines, the SE/30 and IIsi for example, shipped with their ROM on a
SIMM in a similar slot.

Subject: Info-Mac digests bomb CD 1.2b2
Apparently the Info-Mac Digests that I receive are anathema to Cyberdog
1.2b2 (I've always wanted to used the word "anathema" and now I've used it
twice! Or is that one use and one reference? Oh, well...). When I receive a
new digest and leave it in my In box, within a minute or so the following
happens if I leave any mail-related windows open and just sit and wait:
(1) Sporadic hard-disk activity,
(2) In the middle of a burst of such activity, a system error 11 occurs,
(3) After I reboot the Mac the Trash will contain one or more rescued files
named
after newsgroup servers (or sometimes just IP numbers).
If I then re-enter Cyberdog and open a mail window, the same thing will
happen again unless I delete the Info-Mac digest at once and empty the
trash. It also happens if I have an incoming mail handler put the Info-Mac
stuff in its own folder, it just takes a little longer. It doesn't matter
whether virtual memory is on or off or what mix of startup files are
active.
System configuration:
Power Macintosh 7100/80, 24 MB RAM, 720 MB HD
System 7.5.5
Open Transport 1.1
OpenDoc 1.1
Cyberdog 1.2b2
I've made my old Info-Mac Cyberdog mailbox available via anonymous FTP at
tether.fnal.gov during the hours of 1800-0900 CST. It's rather large, about
6 MB, but I don't want to tamper with it since I'm not sure that all the
messages it contains will cause the problem. After downloading it, place it
in your CyberMail folder, open the Mail Trays window in Cyberdog, then sit
back and wait for the fun to start.

Hello Fred,
The 216 "safe" colors they're referring to are the colors in the
Netscape color palette.( the 216 colors that won't dither when viewed in
Netscape) Check out
http://www.connect.hawaii.com/hc/webmas ... olors.html, or
http://www.onr.com/user/lights/netcol.html. You can download a picture of
the palette from one of these sites, open it in photoshop, and load the
palette. Save it as "netscape", and use this when working on WWW images.
This works well on images with many colors. If you have an image with
just a couple colors, try switching to indexed color and then open color
palettes, and choose "exact". Hope this helps!

When I try to connect to a server, the other modem answers and then they
just beep at each other until they give up. Sometimes I connect the first

I have tried connecting to other modems, using other programs (terminal and
PPP), using a Powerbook running 7.1, using a different telephone line. The
problem returns.
Is this a know problem?
Is there a known solution?

This reply was originally posted in the Pagemaker list.
"In Photoshop use either the Magic Wand, the Lasso, or the pen tools under
the PATH commands that let you isolate parts of an image by placing dots
all around it. Once you do this, you MAKE PATH under
the PATH commands. Then you SAVE PATH, accepting Path 1 as its name.
Leaving the image selected, you then select CLIPPING PATH under the Path
commands. It will ask if you want NONE or PATH 1 and you select PATH 1.
SAVE AS the image as an EPS file, and it will ask you if you want to save
it with the CLIPPING PATH named PATH 1, and you say yes.
Now when you PLACE the image in PM (do not try to IMPORT it) only the
part of the image that was within your SELECTION is seen. No box, no
problems."

From: Ed Wright JPL
I recently installed MS Office (Easy Install) on a PPC 9500 running
7.5.3 (also just installed). Odd problems have been reported...
1) MS Word - when trying to quit the app, the debugger comes active.
Using "es" in the debugger to escape Word gives the result of an
Error of Type 10. Not being able to quit an application without the
debugger is a bit of an irritant.
2) One user reported he was unable to shutdown because application
"unknown" was still active. I pulled MS Office control pannel and
that problem seems to have stopped.
I tried the standard init conflict tests, but the quit problem still
occurrs. Does anyone know what is causing this, and/or how I stop
it?

Not correct, at least on any machine other than the IIfx. A IIfx came with
special internal and external terminators. It's the only machine I've seen
with a separate internal terminator.
>>If I connect external SCSI devices to the Mac I have to put

Correct.

If there is termination on the motherboard, it is apparently dynamic, and
turns itself on and off as needed.
Here's how I think about it:
Assume that your Mac, as it came out of the box, is OK with regard to
termination. Now, if you plug anything into the external SCSI connection,
make sure it's terminated at the end. That's all.
>Surely I'm missing something.
No, I believe you're just thinking too hard about this. If there were
anything to worry about here, the manual would cover it. The Macintosh
user guide I just looked at is pretty clear on this point.

One good way to reduce the size of GIF images is to save them without the
resource forks (just the image data). I couldn't get Graphic Converter to
do this, and I don't use Photoshop, so I can't help you there. However,
there is a neat little drag and drop shareware available on info-man called
"ResFork Killer". It will take a 44K Graphic Converter GIF file and strip
it to 11K (depends on the image). The difference is the resource fork which
is unnecessary for HTML documents. Hope this helps.

I know that you can get this error when SpeedDoubler is installed and an

extension may also create problems with SpeedDoubler.
A friend of mine re-initiated his disk (and of course had to reinstall all

After installing The American Heritage Talking Dictionary, I began have the

I suggest, if you have SpeedDoubler, that you run findfile for both
