SUBJECT: EE Savings Bonds 4 COLLEGE V2.2
AUTHOR: Gil Friese
HARDWARE: Windows or Mac
NEEDS: Excel (spreadsheet) V4.0 or later
SIZE: 50,000 bytes
KEYWORDS: College, Friese, Savings, Bond, Series, EE, Treasury, Excel,
Interest, US, Redeem, Gil, Spreadsheet
This Excel spreadsheet CALCULATES the value of U. S. Series EE Savings Bonds,
bought in the past and future. (Series EE bonds were sold since 1/1/80.)
This program will be accurate for DECADES if the user adds readily
available, future market-based rates semi-annually. NO FUTURE DOWNLOADING
unlike other Savings Bond programs! And this program downloads in only about
a MINUTE.
The interest from U. S. Series EE Savings Bonds bought after 1989 can be
totally tax-free if used for college tuition and fees. This may be the best
way for risk-adverse investors to save for college. EE bonds' market-based
rates protect your investment from inflation.
Enter the dates and total face values of bonds bought after 1979 and those to
be bought in the future. The spreadsheet will accurately calculate the
current value of bonds already purchased. It will also estimate the value of
all the bonds years from now, including those bought in the future. The
latter helps you determine if your saving rate is satisfactory.
The spreadsheet also calculates yield-to-date, average market-based rates,
and the return you would need to equal the EE Bonds' performance from a fully
taxable investment.
Documentation is included in the spreadsheet. Some may need to open the
EECOLL.XLS file from within the Excel application.

It's an endless source of gorgeous moving backgrounds and photocollage
elements for your work.
* Easy to use: knots will design themselves if you want, or you can

* Renders standard TIFFs, QuickTime movies, QTVR objects, & icons
* Fast background rendering yields still pictures in a few minutes
* Create 3D stereograms, movies, and tiles with one click

Knots are 3-D abstract shapes which many people say look "something
like intestines", but MacFormat magazine says "Design fantastic,
beautiful images on your Mac with this easy to use graphics program.
With a wealth of options to stretch your artistic talent, the program
produces its wonderful creations in just minutes."
Version 3.7 adds compositing masks for digital video, improved
animation control, and seamlessly repeating tiles, all with high
resolution and "ribbons," assorted lighting effects, 3-D, and tons of
examples. Multiple colored light sources illuminate curved, segmented,
glowing, buckled, iridescent, wet, and segmented strands, with animated
previews, all in 24-bit poster-size color.
Knot requires a color Macintosh with System 7 or later. You can use

Subject: [*] PopExtras 2.0
What is PopExtras?
PopExtras consists of two parts, the first being a button which
is attached to the status bar of the background application (eg
Notepad). Tapping this button will present you with a pop-up menu
containing a user definable list of apps installed on the Newton.
Tapping an app name will open that app! The second part of PopExtras is
the utility that is used to select which apps will be displayed in the
popup button. This utility consists of a scrolling list which contains
the apps installed on the Newton. Tapping on an item in the list will
place a check to the left of the app name, tapping again will remove the
check. Simple. There is also a Clear button which will uncheck all
items. Next to the Clear button is an Open button which can be used to
open the selected app (whether it is checked or not). Checking and
unchecking items will be immediately reflected in the popup menu (only
visible if you close the Extras Drawer after opening PopExtras).
Some Important Information
PopExtras will create a union soup called "PopExtras:comet", at
install time, on your Newton. This soup is used to store the items that
will be displayed in the popup. I have tested PopExtras rigorously to
ensure it does not incur the wrath of the 'Grip-O-Death' god. This is
not a guarantee, just a fair amount of reassurance
It should also be noted that this version of PopExtras will only run
on Newton 2.0 devices.
Version Log:
2.0 * Whoa...big step, NOS 2.0 complience...only took a few hours
to get it running nicely under 2.0. No functional changes. Some code
tidying. I'm not using quite so many undocumented features now! There

Specifically, you need to change your nickname. The server won't let
more than one in use. On AnotherNet (one of the servers is

information that could be very useful to a beginner. Also there are
some very good newsgroups on irc: alt.irc.questions and alt.irc.
Good luck.

Subject: app. that created this doc. not found (?)
Hello; this is one I'm sure I knew the answer to, but my fixes didn't fix
it. Couldn't figure out the right way to phrase it for search engines to
come up with an answer, either.
Situation: Client has Apple's Remote Access Personal installed. Double
clicking on documents created by ARAP yields the "sorry, the application
that created this document couldn't be found" (paraphrased) message.
Creating brand-spanking-new documents from ARAP yields the same result.
However, if you open the folder that the ARAP application is in, and then
close the folder, everything works and continues to work until the next
restart.
I seem to remember this being discussed before, and something about
"touching" folders being needed to update the Desktop file.
Here's what I tried to fix the problem:
Rebuilt desktop using cmd-option at startup.
Reinstalled application.
Trashed applications prefs file, just for fun.
Is there a solution, short of reformatting the drive? This isn't a
crisis; I created a work-around; I'm just frustrated that I forgot the
answer.
TIA,
-Dan

Does anyone know of a Courier font that is EXACTLY like the old Courier on
an IBM typewriter? The Courier supplied with Macs is, at the same point
size, slightly smaller, bothin letter size and in spacing between lines;
the same line typed out in 12 point Courier on an IBM typewriter will be
slightly shorter in 12 point on a Mac.
The Courier supplied by Microsoft and available online is approximately the
same size but much "lighter," so that the print looks significantly lighter

A friend using an old DOS machine seems to have a Courier font that comes
very close to producing the type of the old IBM typewriter, but that font
seems not to work on a Mac.
Does anyone have any suggestions for locating a Courier font that comes
closer to matching the IBM typewriter font?
Thanks.

Jeffrey, I suspect you are talking about Speed Disk. No, the problem is not
peculiar to PPC Macs. I used Speed Disk to optimize one of Leslye's favorite
M/O discs and died a horrible death. It irretrievably munged several files.
I ran SD on my IIci.
I had not run Norton Disk Doctor on the disc before optimizing. A Symantec
techtype said NDD really must be a precursor to optimization. He said his
colleagues had lobbied for a Speed Disk screen asking if you had run NDD on
this disk. If you hadn't, quit NOW! Marketing types thought it a tad much and
squelched the idea.
Shall we sing a short hymn to marketing types? Hymn, hymn, naugtyword him!
If your disk's catalog is munged, the finest optimizer in the world will get
confused. And you will get munged files. Irretrievably lost. Some optimizers
claim to run perfectly from the disk they were booted from. Yes. But only if
that disk's catalog isn't messed up.
I now always check a disk's integrity (MacTools or NDD) before optimizing.
And I've never had a repeat of the optimizer munging files. No matter which
optimizer (MacTools or Norton) I used.

There is an unsupported installer for downgrading to 7.5.3 on Apple's
ftp-servers:
The description says:
Name: Sys 7.5 Upd 2.0 Custom Install
Version: 2.0
Released: October 8, 1996

If you've got a backup copy of your 7.5.3 System Folder, why mess with
non-blessed [and possibly subtly problematic] replacement of particular

This usually means an empty backup battery. Usually this battery is
somewhere on the logic board, either soldered in (so that you need to
bring your Mac to a repair shop) or in a battery holder (so that you
can replace it yourself).

Subject: LC PDS VIDEO CARD???
Hi,
If you receive the following message as a duplicate please accept my
apologies. This is my first attempt at sending a question to this list. The
earlier posting may or may not have fallen through the cracks.
I am looking for a video card to go into the PDS slot of an LC 575 to add
an external 20" monitor.
Rumour has it that at least two companies make such cards. However the only
info I was able to dig up was in reference to a Lapis card and Lapis seems
to be out of business.
If anyone out there knows what I'm talking about, I'd appreciate some
feedback. Thanks in advance.

Subject: LW 8.4 (C again)
I've written of problems with Apple's new LW 8.4 driver. I said it only
sort of worked on my home IIci (sometimes printing and sometimes not), and
it only seemed to work on my office Q650/PPC (number of copies ignored).
The MacWeek that came today (It probably got to the rest of the world last
month) had some fascinating things to say about LW of the 8.4 persuasion.
Desktop Printers cannot be removed from an 8.4 install -- unlike with the
8.3x version. Uh oops. I've no use for DTP. I may have misread the 8.4
docs, but I sure didn't see that tidbit. After the home and office installs,
I removed everything that looked like a desktop printer -- just as I did on
Apple's instructions for the 8.3x install.
Hmmm, says I. Maybe I shouldn't have done that. Ric Ford is pretty reliable.
OK. Fresh install of LW 8.4 on the home IIci. Take the DTP icons and bury
them in a folder that I'll never look at. That's a feature of 8.4 -- you
can put those idiot DTP icons anywhere nowadays. Yee haw! The puppy prints
reliably!
But only one copy again? Wait one, Bloom. Try another app or two. ColorIt!
prints two cop[ies. PowerPoint prints two copies. What only prints one copy
no matter what? Apple's very own MacWrite Pro 1.5v1!
Be still, my heart.
I suppose it is a Good Thing that Apple's new LW driver only blows Apple
programs out of the water. Bill Gates would consider it rude if it blew any
MS stuff away.
Durn! I'm one of the world's last holdouts for MWP. It does what I want with
little fuss and less RAM/HD space than Word. I gotta do Word now? Argghhh!
MacWeek's article said a real advantage of LW 8.4 is that it is a "single
pass" driver. Under 8.3x the driver sent a copy of the output to your HD
before passing it on to PrintMonitor. Sort of messed up folk trying to print
complex documents who didn't have a whole lot of free HD space. Hmmm. That
might be why my immediate lord and master has had problems printing his
goofy graphics. He doesn't give anything up, and last week his HD was down
to a spit's worth of free space. And he couldn't print worth a rip.
I suspect I'll have to give LW 8.4 another look. Especially on the ILM's
system. No, that's not George Lucas's "Industrial Light and Magic." That
is my "Immediate Lord and Master."

I too have been running it on a 7500/100 for a number of months now. No

Look in your System folder for a file called
"On Location File Kinds". It can be opened and

Subject: SCSI is scuzzy!
hi again,
*sigh* I'm having SCSI problems...
I'm using a Microtek Scanmaker E3 scanner and a ZIP drive...
The ZIP drive, since it has a terminator switch, is connected to the
scanner... with the switch in
the "on" position... and the SCSI id set to "5"...
It tells me in the manual for the scanner to set it to SCSI id "6"...
however, when I attempt to change
it to "6" in the Chooser, it always defaults back to "5"...
When I run the scanner software (Color It!), it tells me that a scanner
cannot be found... and
lists the SCSI devices currently attached to the system... and it lists the
Zip drive as being connected
to id 6 instead of 5!!!
I have tried setting the Zip to 6, and leaving the Scanner at 5, but it
still doesn't work..
the only way things seem to work is if I disconnect the Zip drive
altogether... which is NOT, as you
may guess, a good solution...
I've had the Zip drive and the scanner for MANY months now, with periodic
SCSI screw-ups
arising seemingly at random...
does anyone have any suggestions? What are some of the causes of
SCSI-related problems?
And why does the Chooser refuse to allow me to change the SCSI setting of
the Scanner?
I've re-installed both the Zip software and the Scanner software to no
avail...
HELP!!!

Hmmm....I just did this yesterday so that I could repair some problems on
a friend's mac with Disk First Aid. Here's the procedure I used:
1. Drag system folder from hard drive to zip disk.
2. Use Startup Disk control panel to point to the zip disk.
3. Use Special menu Restart command.
4. Zip disk is ejected; push it back in immediately.
5. Mac boots off Zip disk.
This was on a Performa 550 with 7.1.
Note that dragging system folders is not an official Apple method of
creating startup disks; you might want to try installing the system
software from the original disks or cd directly onto the Zip drive.
Based on the info you supply, it sounds like the Mac is either
* not seeing the Zip drive at all at startup time, or
* not recognizing the system folder on the zip drive as a valid, bootable
system.
Hope this helps,
Dan

I do this occasionally and have never had a problem; perhaps you're not
getting the keys down in time? I hold down command, option, and shift with
my left hand, restart from the special menu and immediately hold down the
delete key. Be sure you hold them down until you see the smilin' Mac, at
which point the decision of which drive to start from has been made.
I guess an alternative would be to move something crucial (like the system
file) out of the hard disk's system folder and restart. If you try this,
though, be absolutely certain you've got a working startup floppy around,
or you may not be able to get back in (if, for example your system folder
on the Zip disk *isn't* good for some reason).

what wrong with my OS?
right after i boot up and with no apps running, my system 7.5.3 took up
about 3,600k of RAM.
however, all my extensions and control panels take up 1,489k (displayed
by conflict catcher 3.0.4 = system 1,489k/ high 22.5k), my memory cache
is 384k, and the basic system (shift key during boot) takes up only
1,416k.
but this DOES NOT add up! 1,489+384+1,416= 3,289! NOT the 3,600 that's
shown!?! there's over 300k of RAM wasted somewhere. but where?
what else takes up RAM? where should i look for RAM usage? is this what
they call "system RAM leakage?"
stats are: LC040, 12Mb physical RAM, virtual mem off, re-installed 7.5
with update 2.0 after running 7.5.5 for a short while (too many
crashes), startupscreen in system folder, no startup items, no shut down
items, no fancy display screens, syQuest 135 external (not startup disk=
makes no difference), recently rebuilt desktop folder, recently
optimized hardrive, recently dumped all app caches.
in addition, when i further go to dump all unused extensions, then
optimize my hardrive and rebuild my desktop, the system takes up even
more RAM, now up to about 3,750k!
it keeps growing just because i try to slim it down!
what is wrong with my System 7.5.3? anyone with suggestions?
