I use my PB at work to connect to an ethernet of PC's. The cheapest
solution I found was to purchase Miramar's Personal MacLAN. It loads an
Appletalk stack onto the PC, allowing the Mac to access all the files on
the single PC (in your case, the server). Files can be moved back and
forth using either the PC or the Mac, from the normal file transferring
(i.e, the Finder on the Mac).

The product is super and inexpensive. Note that it is strictly one PC to a
maximum of five Macs. It will also allow you to print to any Postscript
printer on the PC ethernet.

The software loads on the PC, windows 3.1 or '95. Because it goes on the
PC, it is not a Mac type interface, a fact a number of reviewers have
bitterly complained about. But hey, it is a PC program. It loads on a PC.
If you are in need of accessing files on a PC, I figure that you can deal
comfortably with a PC Windows interface.

Subject: (Q) Iomega Zip Tools v.5 availability

I've tried to download the recently released Iomega Zip Tools v.5 from the
company's website as per the instructions in a mailer I received. I am able
to progress through several layers of web pages, but at the point when I
specifically select the Mac download option, my Netscape application never
seems to complete the contact.

Has anyone been successful in doing this download? Can the v.5 tools be
posted on Info-Mac?

Thanks!

I had the same problem once. Solution for me: Reinstall a few
extensions. Probably: Foreign File Access or/and Audio CD Access.

Consider PortShare Pro from Stalker Software. Any Mac on the network can
use the modem, up to the number of licensed users (10)--but only one at a

Hope this helps. Cheers!

My short, sweet answer is completely incorrect, as pointed out to me by
Doug Brower. It doesn't work. I hate it when people give useless answers,
especially me!!

If anybody knows how to do this I'd like to know too! Surely some

Subject: RAM upgrade

. . .

I have a little question. I own right now a 7200/75 PowerMac with 2MB of
VRAM, 256k L2 cache and 32MB of RAM. I am thinking of adding 32 more MB up
to 64 MB in total. I use Photoshop the most. Now, is there anybody out
there who has already made that RAM boost that can give me a feedback on
what kind of speed improvement they felt while they where working with
medium size documents, like 8 or 10Megs in Photoshop?

. . .

Reply:

You will find an enormous speed difference in Photoshop with images from
8-10MB when you increase your RAM because with your current configuration
Photoshop is using your hard drive as "scratch" space in order to manipulate
the
image.

A Photoshop image requires 3-5 times the size of the image of "scratch space"
in
order to save changes, save the original (in case you want to revert to saved)
and
in general to work. Whatever RAM you don't have, it will go to the hard drive
and
use that as "scratch" or working space. Since RAM is generally at least 10
times
faster than most hard disks, most conservatively one could say you will see at

least a 3x to 4x performance increase while working with images of this size.

In your abovementioned scenario, an 8MB file requires 24 to 40MB of RAM
to effectively work, and 30 to 50MB of RAM for a 10MB file. If your system
folder
is like most, your system probably takes up 5-7MB, leaving a "working" space
of
about 22MB (your remaining RAM, plus 10% for system overhead). Increasing
your RAM to 64MB will give you working space of 51MB . . . plenty of room for
both 8 and 10MB images.

For more information on this, see the documentation on the Photoshop CD if you
have access to it, or the information on Improving Performance that can be
found
at adobe's web site, www.adobe.com.

I tried installing expanders into a 6100 and I had nothing but problems.
When I removed them the problems went away.

My explanation of why expanders sometimes do not work is below. Warning:
you are now approaching techno-babble.

The speed of RAM measures the time between when you tell the RAM what
address you want information from and when that information is on the data
lines and can be read as valid. My guess is that the extra distance from
the RAM socket through the expander adds enough capacitance to the signal
lines to cause problems.

Major techno-babble ahead.

Adding an expander is similar to digging a trench in the sand at the beach.
The signal (or the wave at the beach) when at the SIMM socket (measured at
the water's edge) takes a while to fill the extra capacitance with energy
and traverse through the expander (fill the trench with water to allow the
wave to traverse through the trench in the sand) to reach the RAM chips
(the end of the trench in the sand). In reverse, when the RAM has the data
ready, those signals take a while to get back through the expander. Yes
this is a very simplified analogy but in general, it is a pretty good
visualization of what is happening. Anyway, the expander adds a time delay
and I presume that some Macs are sensitive enough to the extra capacitance
so that you would need chips that are much faster than the specified chips
(smaller nanosecond (ns) numbers mean faster response times) when the delay
of an expander is added. If you are using 60ns RAM in the expander (vs 80ns
on board) and that is still not working, chances are it will never work
with an expander in your computer.

When in doubt, ask the wonderful Info-Mac list...

Anyone know whether there are PowerPC-native and/or Open Transport-savvy
versions of either Apple IP Gateway or Apple Internet Router out there?
Or have both these products been killed or replaced?

(BTW, for those who are wondering, the "Internet" in Apple Internet
Router doesn't mean Internet. It means "inter-LAN". Not an IP router at
all, it's an AppleTalk router, which you can use to mix LocalTalk and
EtherTalk LANs.)

What about Apple Remote Access? Is that now PPC-native and/or OT-savvy?

to go up to a PPC (or even a '040), but want to up the speed. Is anyone

What I'm really trying to do is get enough speed up to be able to adopt a

It is "does," Hannes." Not "do."

No, I wouldn't bother with that correction for anyone with a non-US
address. Heck, it's rough enough for you folk who don't speak English
as a first language. But I get a tad torqued when US folk don't write
the language.

Yeah, I know. "Hannes Hofer" may imply a foreign student studying here.
Hard cheese. Learn the language.

But I digress. To the matter at hand:

Congratulations, Hannes. At least you got something working before
everything went to hell.

I saw your note and decided to look at "Digital Equalizer." It crashed
upon launch on my machine (Q650/PPC, Sys 7.5.3r2).

Fortunately it didn't kill anything else. As it did on your machine.

The product seems to be a piece of used food. The author's response to
you seems to indicate that he could give less than a naughtyword about
whether his program actually does something useful on any machine but
his own on any operating system other than his own.

Digital Equalizer might be one of the, blessedly few, instances where we
should ask the info-mac masters to flush a submission.

Subject: Consulting-Getting Started

I'm sending this as an open letter to all the Macintosh computer
consultants on the IO-MUG and INFO-MAC lists. I'm thinking about going into
computer consulting, focusing on my favorite computer, the Macintosh, and
I'd like some tips and tricks from those of you alreading in that business.
Specifically, I'd like to know:

1) How did you get your first clients? And how do you keep getting new
ones? In
other words, what marketing strategies do you use?

2) I realise that knowledge and experience of the working innards of a
computer and computer-related equipment is a prerequisite to be a computer
consultant, but just how much do you HAVE to know? And how do you acquire
that knowledge?

3) What tools do you need to start off with? Such things as software
utilities, a vehicle of some sort to get around, etc. Please expand on this
list.

Well, that's all I can think of to start with. I'm sure I'll think of more
questions as answers to these initial queries come to me. Just a little
background: I'm a college student who's worked with both Windows and
Macintosh computers, and I own a Mac. I've been working at a computer lab
at my school with mainly Windows machines for the last three years, where I
basically help keep the computers running and help users with their
problems.

Thanks in advane for any and all replies,

Open your System Folder, select Apple Menu Items, make an alias of it, and
drop the alias into the real Apple Menu Items folder. Rename as desired,
adding pre- or post-alphabetic characters to control its appearance at the

Netscape doesn't have this trouble at all. But there are times when I

KeyQuencer 2.0.

It is a newcomer commercial macro utility, and includes the

Its 'RemoteControl' command can send commands to any AppleTalk-connected

Hi!

I have a storageset in Mac Retrospect 3.0 and can't find a way to copy
out a complete list of files. I get "Retrospect selection" when I paste
in to Word. I need to edit the list in a word processor. If it's nrt
possible to export or copy a text version of the list, can I print a
complete storageset list to a PS file?

What program will convert a PS printo to disk file into a text file for
Word? I rember something that did that.

Thanks for your help.

Subject: PCI Macs and LaserWriter Bridge

Hi,

We are preparing a Mac 8500 as server for our department
network here. On our old server we had installed the LaserWriter
(software) Bridge (from Apple).

On the new 8500 we run AppleShare 4.2.1 (the latest version).
Today we discovered that on a 8500, which is a PCI machine
this LaserWriter Bridge Software will NOT run !!
There seems to be no update for PCI Macs.

Is this true ?

Does someone have another solution (instead of buying
additional hardware for our laserwriters).

Subject: Project X (Apples MCF system)

Sorry, just to be more precise about MCF. In my earlier mail I concentrated
on the use of MCF to store _structural information_ about collections of
related documents, but that is just one example of how MCF can be used
(something that I do not feel that I made clear).

MCF's purpose is to represent "information _about_ content" -- it is quite
flexible about the sort of meta information that can be stored. In the
case of Project X, the information stored is the object name, identifiers
of parents, identifiers of children, and hints of position (x,y coords
relative to parent). So, for Project X, MCF is basically used to provide
meta information about the structure of a collection of documents, which
is probably the most interesting application area for MCF, which is why
I concentrated on it earlier.

Subject: Project X (Apples MCF system)

Thomas Khan ([email protected]) asked about whether he should be
intrested in ProjectX/MCF in digest 207.

Thomas, You appear to confuse MCF and "Project X". MCF is "just" a
meta-content format. It's purpose (as stated in Apple's White Paper
on MCF - available from the Project X pages of Apple's Web server) is
to provide a language to adequately represent _information about
structure_. A number of experimental hypermedia systems allow users to
create links that contain structural information, but this type of
information is not possible to convey adequately in current HTML. This
is a major problem with the web, as a hypermedia system, because the
structure of documents in a hypertext can often convey as much meaning
as the information contents of the nodes themselves and because structural
information is needed to enable the feasability of useful spatial navigation
aids (2D maps or 3D worlds) which hypertext research indicates are very
useful for navigating in large information spaces. MCF is interesting
because it allows us to add information about structure to your Web site.

So how does the Project X application fit into this?
Project X is an example of a client that uses the meta information to
provide an overview representation of web documents. In the case of
Project X the overview is 3D.

If MCF catches on then it could be used to present information in a
number of different ways. The important things is that it helps to
define how documents are related to each other. At the moment there
are not enough tools that use MCF, but you should follow it's progress
as it is a potentially very useful addition to the web designers toolbox.

To avoid triggering its own virtual memory scheme, Photoshop needs three
to five times the image size in free RAM (in its Get Info allocation).
Assuming you mean an image with a 10 MB RAM footprint (not file size,
which is usually much smaller due to compression), 64 MB total should
prevent you from hitting the disk if your System footprint isn't too
large and you aren't running anything big in the background. With larger
images, or images with extra layers and channels, you may still push
Photoshop into VM mode, but not as frequently, and the delays will be
shorter.

If you've been working on 10 MB images with your current setup, you
probably already have a good idea of how much time you'll save,
especially if you use an init like MacLights to show drive activity. All
that disk thrashing will go away. Nothing speeds up Photoshop like a
massive infusion of RAM.

Subject: Saving audio cd tracks to disk?

Hi

I wan't to know if there is a way to copy tracks from a standard audio cd
to an HD or other media. And then play the tracks from there.
As far as I can see it isn't impossible since it's only data but can I do
it with existing software?

Bye.

I have had an EZ 135 for about 6 months now and am very pleased with it. It
is subjectively as fast as my internal drive and has been very reliable.
The only drawback is the somewhat clunky load/eject procedure. I don't find
that too bothersome. I have seen it advertised recently for about $100. At
that price, it's a great value. If you can swing it though, check out the
230MB EZ Flyer. Twice the storage capacity at about the same media price,
and an improved load/eject procedure.

Hope this helps,

Subject: Universal System Floppy

I am trying to make a Universal System floppy for as many Macs as possible.
Is there a way to make a 7.5 boot disk that will boot all Macs made before
7.5? I have a universal hard drive (7.5.3) which boots ANYTHING - but I
want to get the older machines on floppy boot.

As I understand - all pre 7.5 CPU's would boot from this disk while
anything after would need enabler files that are larger than a disk.

Is there a way around the enablers that came with 7.1 by using the 7.5 Disk
Tools disk for example?

Someone asked here recently the same question that got unanswered for me
last year: is there a soft case for carrying around compactly a number of
Zip disks? The answer is that Iomega has created a 6-disk wallet which it
is selling for $15-$16. It is their items #729705 and can be ordered from
their Web page .

But our school computer store is selling them for slightly less, so check
your local outlets.
