Subject: [!] First digest with new list
Hi all,
This is it! The first digest with our new ListSTAR (run by the folks
at starnine). Let me know if you have any strange formatting problems
or duplicate digests, etc.
A note about subscribing and unsubscribing. I've sent off some updates
for our web pages () and they will appear
soon. They, however, will just lead you to the web page setup by starnine,
at which contains instructions on how to
subscribe and unsubscribe. Have at it! Let me know if something you see
there is not clear.
And here is a treat. If you get the digest, you can try to unsubscribe by
just sending a reply to the digest with "unsubscribe" in it.
And, if you are worried, any replys you send to the digest mailing will
make it into the next digest we send out... well, almost, we have a 2 digest
backlog of messages right now.
Cheers,
Gordon (info-mac moderator)

Subject: [*] AMO patch 7.5.3
ABOUT THESE PATCHES
This patch modifies the Apple Menu Options Control Panels supplied with
Apple's System Software Version 7.5 and up. There are patches for all
versions of the Apple Menu Options Control Panel available thus far. So,
before applying the patch, please check the version number.
WHAT IT DOES
The Apple Menu Options Control Panel supplies your Mac with a hierarchical
Apple Menu. Without this patch, files with the name '-' (A single dash
character) will show up, in your Apple Menu's Submenus, as Menu Items named
'-' (obviously).
After applying this patch, these items will show up as Menu Separation
lines. If you think "Wow, that's useful!", this patch is for you, otherwise
don't bother. What's more: Files ending with a '$' character will also show
up as Menu Separation lines.
For your convenience I've included, with this distribution, an icon I
created for
having a Quick Access menu in my Apple Menu, under which I store aliasses
to important files and folders.

This patch application was made with ResCompare, a free resource comparison
and patch generation utility. ResCompare can be FTP'ed from most Macintosh
archive sites. Send e-mail inquiries regarding ResCompare to

Subject: [*] CD Equalizer + Karaoke 3.0
CD Equalizer + Karaoke 3.0 (PPC)
Listening to audio discs on your internal CD drive can be a pretty flat
experience- most players lack the features of even modest stereo systems.
To fix this, I created CD Equalizer, a shareware 27 band professional
equalizer which allows you to tailor CD sound to your listening tastes. It
also allows registered users to strip vocals from most recordings.
CD Equalizer records sound from a CD-ROM drive (or other source), runs it
through a 27 band equalizer, then plays the new signal through the Mac's
speakers and/or headphone jack. It can run in the background, so you can
listen to CD's while using other applications.
You control the sound intensity in each band by adjusting a large display
in the center of the window. Click over or under a given bar to raise or
lower it, or sweep out a curve all at once by holding the mouse down. You
can save and recall sets of bar heights with the memory buttons at the
bottom of the window.
You can use the built-in MiniPlayer to listen to CD's through the equalizer
(and through the devocalizer, if you've registered). You can also use this
program with an external player, like the AppleCD Audio Player.
Power Performa Owners: To ensure that the equalizer runs as smoothly as
possible on your machine, you should run the autocalibration procedure
("Calibrate CD Direct" in the File Menu). It takes about 10 minutes, but
you only have to do it the first time you run the equalizer.
CD Equalizer + Karaoke is shareware; if you use it for more than thirty
days, you must register by paying the $20 fee. Registered users will
receive a postcard with an ID and password which can be used to remove the
shareware notices and enable extra features like vocal stripping and
karaoke.
Version 3.0 is a complete rewrite- new interface, new code, and much better
than 2.0.
Requires: Power Macintosh and Sound Manager 3.1+. Shareware: $20 (US)

NON-POWER MAC OWNERS: Sorry, A 68K version is just not possible. See the
documentation file for details.

Click, there it is! 1.0.7 (released with permission from author)
This extension requires system 7.x
Click, there it is! is absolutely essential. It allows the user to easily
bring up folders while saving/opening files by clicking outside of the
dialog box. Here are the author's comments:
_____________________________________
Click, there it is! is a very simple, no user interface extension to all
open and save dialog boxes. It allows you to quickly select any window
representing a folder or volume on the Finder's desktop as the destination
to open or save a file to. It also allows you to drag the open or save
dialog box around, in case you need to get to a window to click on.
Version 1.0.7 fixes a folder display problem with StandardGetFile (based on
1.0.6).
Version 1.0.6 was recompiled with Metrowerks and the portions worth going
native are now accelerated for Power Macintosh.
Version 1.0.4 which was primarily distributed in Japan contained a fix a
major bug that caused applications with Custom Filters to crash because I
was supplying the wrong number of arguments to the filter.

Much thanks to R. Cardona for fixing this small bug, one of only two
problems I haver ever encountered. (FYI the other is in SimLife. See also
the Release Notes.) As a user, I would strongly recommend this software on
any Mac. Once you start using it you'll be frustrated working without it --
trust me, I know!

Subject: [*] ConvertMachine 1.0.6J - Japanese Version
This is the Japanese version of the ConvertMachine sound conversion utility.
This release fixes a slight incompatibility with QuickTime 2.5. Significant
improvements are currently being built into version 1.1; and thanks for the
useful feedback and suggestions.
ConvertMachine is a fat binary meaning it runs on 68K machines and native
on PPC machines.
It is mostly a batch processing utility to convert sound format files to a
desired type. This means it performs one or more of the following without
user interaction: decompression, resampling (sample rate conversion),
mixing (stereo to mono) and compression.
You don't need to worry about what format the file is in; all you specify
is the desired output format.
Finder Sound files (sfil), AIFF files, WAVE files, AU Mu-law and linear and
QuickTime Audio (Movies) can be freely converted.
Manually you can import off Audio CDs into any of the above formats.
You can save your popular Settings under as a menu item or as a separate
Settings file. The common web formats are flagged and ready to use as
defaults, such as audio/basic mono 8kHz mu-law.
After conversion files can be automatically sent to SoundMachine for playing.
It needs at least QuickTime 2.1 and Apple's Sound Manager 3.1 or later.

Subject: [*] FormParser 1.0 (HTML forms decoder for macintosh)
The HTML "mailto" option provides a simple and easy way for transmitting
information submitted by internet users via World Wide Web forms.
Unfortunately, the e-mailed information is encoded in hard-to-read format.
FormParser is a free application that translates a mailed-in World Wide Web
form stored as a text file into another, now readable, text file.
FormParser does not have the bells and whistles of "InFORmer," but, unlike
InFORmer, it is free, simple, and does not require hypercard.
FormParser requires Macintosh System 7 or higher.

Subject: [*] Hybrid Filename Checker 1.1.1
What does this utility do?
To share files across multiple computer platforms, files must conform to
the lowest common denominator of file naming conventions, namely ISO9660.
This utility lists all files in a selected folder (and sub folders) that do
not conform to ISO9660, DOS '8.3' / Windows 3.1 or Windows95 naming
conventions. Folder names, lowercase characters and invalid DOS extensions
can also be checked for. This utility is particularly useful in the
production of hybrid (cross platform) CD-ROMs where all shared files names
must conform to ISO9660.
Version 1.1.1 adds:
* Fix for an uncommon crashing bug
* Command-period now cancels check
* Other fixes

Subject: [*] PowerMenu 1.0J - Japanese Version
This is the Japanese version of the PowerMenu package.
Why would I want PowerMenu?
Is your desktop cluttered with icons of your applications or items you use
frequently? How many times have you wanted to open a document with a
certain application that didn't create it, and wasted time opening, closing
and arranging windows to get a "clear shot" at a drag-and-drop? How much
room on your screen do you waste trying not to cover up your desktop
aliases, or how many times have you had to close myrads of open windows to
get at them?
PowerMenu can pop up a menu when you're working in the Finder that lets you
open the currently selected document or documents in any running
application, or any application, running or not, in PowerMenu's application
list. Opening a SimpleText document in Word, for example, is a simple
two-click operation: select the document, pop up the menu and choose
"Word". No more messing with desktop aliases or "launch pad" programs.
PowerMenu also lets you maintain a list of "Quick Access Items" that is
available on your popup menu from inside any application. Keeping items you
use frequently in that menu means you can launch them instantly.
PowerMenu's pop-up menu is fully hierarchical, which means you can organize
your applications and quick access items into groups for even faster
access.
PowerMenu is optimized for both Macintosh and Power Macintosh computers,
meaning it will run at full speed on whatever model you use.

Subject: [*] The InFORMer v2.0
On the World Wide Web (WWW), one of the exciting new constructs in HTML 2.0
is the use of FORMs to gather information. Unfortunately, the only
well-known way to process forms involves access to the CGI directory on
your web server, and most of us user-type folks don't have that access. Did
you know that all you _really_ need to process forms is the ability to
create a web page and to be able to receive Internet e-mail?
The InFORMer=81 will teach you how to set up your own forms. Then, it will
process your form data into either a text file or a tab-delimited field,
return-delimited record format, ready for importing into your favorite
spreadsheet or database.
Version 2.0 has been completely rewritten and is now a stand-alone
application, no longer requiring HyperCard (So everyone can run it!), and
is about 5 times faster than v1.7.1. The InFORMer will process mail files
>From Eudora, Netscape Navigator 2.0 & 3.0, America Online, and Claris
Emailer, and has full online Help and a tutorial. If you don't want to

Subject: [*] VideoToolbox 96-08-22
The VideoToolbox is a collection of two hundred C subroutines and several
demo and utility programs that I and others have written to do visual
psychophysics with Macintosh computers. It is fully compatible with 680x0
and PowerPC Macs and with Metrowerks CodeWarrior and Symantec C compilers.
It's free and may not be sold without permission. It should be useful to
anyone who wants to present accurately specified visual stimuli or use the
Mac for psychometric experiments. The text file "Video synch" discusses all
the ways of synchronizing programs to video displays and the many pitfalls
to avoid. The TimeVideo application checks out the timing of all video
devices in anticipation of their use in critical real-time applications,
e.g. movies or lookup table animation. "Video bugs" reports all known bugs
uncovered by TimeVideo's testing of 56 video cards and drivers. Low-level
routines control video timing and lookup tables, display real-time movies,
and implement the luminance-control algorithms suggested by Pelli and Zhang
(1991). In particular, CopyWindows (or CopyBitsQuickly) faithfully copies
between on-screen and off-screen windows (or bit/pixmaps), WindowToEPS
saves an image to disk as encapsulated PostScript, for later printing or
incorporation into a document, and SetEntriesQuickly and GDSetEntries load
the screen's color lookup table, all without any of QuickDraw's color
translations. NoisePdfFill.c quickly generates visual noise images whose
pixels are samples from a specified probability density function.
High-level routines help analyze psychophysical experiments (e.g.
maximum-likelihood fitting and graphing of psychometric data). Assign.c is
a runtime C interpreter for C assignment statements, which is useful for
controlling experiments and sharing calibration data. This collection has
been continually updated since 1991. More that one hundred colleagues
subscribe to the email distribution (see below), and have indicated that
they are using the software in their labs. Documentation is in the source
files themselves. Many of the routines are Mac-specific, but some very
useful routines, e.g. the luminance-control, statistics, maximum-likelihood
fitting algorithms, and the runtime interpreter are written in Standard C
and will work on any computer. Those wishing to acknowledge use of the
VideoToolbox software might cite: Pelli, D. G. and Zhang, L. (1991)

WHAT'S NEW (since June 15, 1996):
Added a new "Read me" file alerting users to the need for DriverServicesLib
and NameRegistryLib, which are supplied in the Lib folder (suggested by
Preeti Verghese). Compatible with CodeWarrior 9 and Symantec C 8.1. Most of
the documentation is at the web site, which also allows downloading of the
new archive:

every site I attempt to go to, and no matter what program I'm using

And, it's idiosyncratic- I'm able to log on with no probs for several days,
and then I run into this problem and I can't log on for several days.
What's going on? Any suggestions? I've tried converting back to Config

like to stay with FreePPP if I can. I'm using Sys 7.5.3 and Open Transport.

Subject: SIMM Expanders & Centris 610
Hi!
Have you been able to use SIMM Expanders with a Centris 610? Do SIMM
Expanders have problems running with different-speed soldered-on SIMMS?
My SIMMs work fine plugged directly into the SIMM slots, but when I use them
with the Expanders my Centris 610 won't boot.
I'm trying to use 32 megabyte, 60ns SIMMS. The factory-installed memory in
the Centris 610 is 4 megabyte, 80ns.
Thanks.
