Fergus, check out "Macworld Macintosh Secrets" by Pogue and Schorr
(IDG Books), now in its 3rd edition I believe. This bulky tome has
displaced the Bible in my scriptorium. Came (comes?) with a selection
of better shareware. Common and not-so-common problems of most
kinds are addressed efficiently, while keeping a sense of humor about
it all, which has to be the best advice.

Subject: (Q) SIMM expander card for Q605?

I'm looking for a SIMM memory expansion card for my Quadra 605 (and for the 2
Q605s used by the
Youth Choir where my wife works).

I've seen extension cards for PCs which fit in an existing SIMM slot and allow
you to put two (or
four SIMMs in them). I realize that the Q605 SIMM slot is angled and so the
card
would have to
have sockets which are also angled to allow the SIMMS to fit in the case.

Since the Q605 has only 1 slot, was hoping someone out there can point me to a
source for a card
which would allow me to add two SIMMs in the machine.

Subject: [A] Buzzing sound in PM 7200

Hello,

A while back I posted a question regarding the annoying buzzing sound that
comes from the hard drive of the Powre Mac 7200s. I received a varied
number of responses/solutions to the problem, but ended up with my own,
which seems to have worked.

The Quantum Fireball 1.2 GB drives which ship with these models tend to
spin pretty fast. So fast, in fact, that they cause a vibration in the case
of the CPU. When there's no monitor sitting on top of the CPU (as in my
case, and many others with whom I've spoken) the case produces a most
undesirable buzzing sound. By pressing down on the case with my hand I was
able to stop the buzzing. But then it was kinda hard getting anything done.

The solution: I opened up the case and was struck with a rather insane
idea. If there was some kind of insulator between the hard drive and the
case, it would stop the vibration, n'est pas? So I took the CD-ROM slip
that ships with the Power Mac (the plastic envelope that the CD ships in)
and cut away the plastic with a knife. That left me with a nice square
piece of cottony material. I folded it up into quarters, and sat it on the
hard drive, then slipped the case back on over it. Now there is no more
buzzing!!!! And the greatest thing is, you have the materials to do it
right now!!!

If you've got any questions, just ask.

Aaron.

Subject: [A] Hard Disk Catalog Problem (sorta)

Hi all, and John Steele,

John, I'm sorry I have to say this but the only solution to your disk
catalog woes is 1) Backup 2) Reformat 3) Reinstall. Disk First Aid (DFA)
and Norton Disk Doctor (NDD) claim to be able to repair a lot of things but
generally don't. Let me illustrate by telling you how I spent the weekend
of the 24th (all of it, I might add).
First of all I want to warn everyone that Netscape Navigator, and
presumably all other browsers, mess up your disk catalog sooner or later.
Netscape claims all apps can do that to you, but that Navigator is more
prone to do it because it uses your disk quite often. And that they're just
a little bit sorry but can't do anything about it. I say the solution is to
write an app that doesn't crash, as catalogs don't mess up by accident.
*That* is the real reason why Navigator messes up your disk, and the reason
why I still use Netscape 1.1N, which is OK as long as I stay off the
Microsoft site (they want me to use IE or what?). I think I've tackled this
problem once and for all (thanks to info-mac; can't remember who posted
this tip the first time) by creating an extra partition on my hard disk. I
use it only for VM storage and the Netscape Cache folder. So if anything
happens to it all I have to do is initialize that partition, which is a
breeze because it has no real data on it.
My problems started a few months ago when I ran DFA and it reported
"invalid sibling link, 4,1203" quite early in the process without looking
any further. Silly me tried to fix this problem which DFA and NDD couldn't
fix by compressing most files on my HD into one Compactor file, thinking:
"If it's only one file, there are no siblings, so the problem must go
away". Well, think again. I ended up with a Netscape Cache folder that
appeared empty but about which the trash reported that it had 182 files in
it; and it couldn't be thrown away. After a few rounds of NDD and DFA I
could get rid of the folder, but these catalog errors have a habit of
sticking and there's no telling where they went.
Warning: certain catalog errors (at least) piggy-back right along when you
copy a folder that has problems to another disk. I even saw problems when I
Compacted a malicious folder, moved the .cpt file to another disk, and then
extracted to yet another disk. These things are vicious! The full extent
(no pun intended) of the problem became clear when I tried to backup my
drive so I could reformat. I thought I had a bad Zip cartridge at first. My
Mac "couldn't continue copying because of a disk error". After a lot of
messing about it became clear the disk error was on the Hard disk (thanks
Apple, for such enlightning error messages). Sometimes my Mac would even
crash while trying to copy a folder. It took two days to identify the
culprit files/folders and although in the end all I really lost was a
postscript font, I know I have to be more careful in the future. Netscape
will not touch my startup disk ever again.
Sorry John, I can't make it any easier.
By the way, has anyone seen this before: My Mac would crash on startup if I
connected the Zip drive with termination ON. My whole SCSI 'chain' is that
Zip and an internal Quantum 540 Lightning (terminated). Turning termination
OFF on the Zip worked like a charm during that full-weekend backup. Any
takers?

The VM swap file size is ALWAYS the same as VM or virtual memory which in
this case is 25MB. The size of RAM or real memory is not used in the
calculation of the VM swap file size, just the size of the VM.

From: Greg Fudala
Subject: AppleVision 1710AV question

I have an AppleVision 1710AV monitor hooked up to my Power Mac 6100/60.
In order to change resolutions (640x480 and 832x624) on the fly, the
AppleVision software that came with the monitor must be loaded. This
includes the Display Enabler, and the AppleVision extension itself.

The thing is, the AppleVision extension annoys me! First of all, it
takes up like 300k or so of memory. Second of all, the volume/brightness
etc. controls are routed through the software, so if I'm playing a game
like Doom which is not yielding the CPU to other processes, then the
volume control does nothing, but cache in the keyboard buffer and not
take effect until the game releases the CPU. This is a pain when I want
to turn down the volume late at night.

So, what I do is not load the AppleVision software at all, and use the
monitor's own hardware for controls. This works fine, but the problem is
that I can't switch resolutions on the fly. The "Monitors" control panel
simply doesn't list all the possible resolutions unless the damn
AppleVision extension is loaded.

Does anyone know of any way to allow me to switch resolutions without
loading the AppleVision extension?

This message is for Mail*Link PT/Internet users. I haven't seen the info =
I am about to write in the past 30 or so digests, so here it is.

Mail*Link is an e-mail program from Apple (formerly from StarNine) and =
uses PowerTalk to take advantage of desktop mailboxes. It has an option =
to use StuffIt Engine extension (which come with StuffIt w/EE 3.5.2) to =
compress/decompress attachments. If you experience a crash using this =
option (which I do), then use ResEdit to open :System =
Folder:Extensions:Mail*Link PT/INET and increase the SIZE -1's Size from =
409600 to something like 509600, an increase of 100KB (approximately). =
This solves the problem. With this option enabled, three encoding =
formats, MIME, uuencode, and binhex, are automatically decoded. And if =
the incoming mail has an attachment as the same format as you have set =
(e.g., mine is StuffIt+AppleDouble+MIME), then the attachment will be =
decoded completely to its original file.

It's possible that it's because you haven't told the listserv to "set

Subject: Internal SCSI ID jumper stumper

>one is supposed to jump the FK pins at all times.

Well, I can't find any information about "FK" jumpers, but all the
Quantum 1-gig drives I have here have a "PK" pair. this stands for
"Park", and is just a place to store a spare jumper.

>Anyone got a clue about these WS/EP/SS pins?

Here's some info from http://www.quantum.com/

***
ProDrive 40/80S

Jumper Definitions

Table 1
Jumper Setting Description
EP OFF Parity disabled
ON Parity enabled
WS OFF Wait Spin disabled
ON Wait Spin enabled
SS OFF Self Seek disabled
ON Self Seek enabled
A0
A1
A2 SCSI ID

Termination Resistors

One of the requirements of the SCSI bus is that it be properly
terminated. If more than one SCSI device is connected to the host, the
last device on each end of the bus must be terminated. The ProDrive disk
drive utilizes three (3) Terminating Resistor packs, when installed
these resistors enable termination on the SCSI bus. With the Terminating
Resistor packs removed, bus termination is disabled.

At the factory, Quantum configures the ProDrive 40/80S hard disk drive
with termination enabled; that is, all three resistor packs are
installed. To disable termination, remove the Terminating Resistor
packs.

Enable Parity (EP) Jumper

The Enable Parity (EP) jumper is used to set the Parity option on the
drive. With parity checking enabled (EP installed), the drive performs
parity checking. With parity checking disabled (EP removed), the drive
continues to generate parity information, but does not perform parity
checking.

At the factory, Quantum configures the ProDrive 40/80S hard disk drive
with the EP jumper in place.

SCSI-Bus Device Identification (A0 - A2) Jumpers

Used in combination, the jumper settings across pins A2, A1 and A0
determine the ProDrive 40/80S hard disk drive's SCSI-bus device I.D. By
default, Quantum configures the drive with a SCSI ID of 6; that is, with
jumpers installed across the pins labeled A2 and A1, and no jumpers
installed across pins labeled A0.

To assign a different SCSI ID, change the jumper settings as shown in
Table 2.

Wait Spin (WS) Jumper

With the Wait/Spin (WS) jumper disabled, at power on or reset, the drive
motor starts to spin automatically, and the drive prepares itself to
perform read or write operations without the need for a start command.
At a power on or reset, with the Wait/Spin jumper enabled, the host must
send a START/STOP UNIT command to activate the drive motor for read or
write operations. In addition, with the W/S jumper enabled, the drive
performs power sequencing to prevent an overload of the host's power
supply due to simultaneous, peak start-up current demands from multiple
devices.

At the factory, Quantum configures the ProDrive 40/80S hard disk drive
with the Wait/Spin jumper disabled; that is, without a jumper installed
across the pins labeled WS. To enable Wait/Spin, install a jumper across
the pins labeled WS.

Self Seek (SS) Jumper

The Self Seek (SS) jumper is used to place the drive in a test mode at
start up. This will inhibit the drive from normal operation and is for
factory use only.

At the factory, Quantum configures the ProDrive 40/80S hard disk drive
with no jumper in place.

Hope this helps.

Also, I would not call 10 seconds immediate. I have a fully established

The BitSURFER Pro is definitely a "terminal adapter" and *NOT* a modem...
"Modems" don't talk digital ISDN!... What's special about your Ascend P25
is its ethernet to ISDN routing capabilities...

>

Agreed... I don't consider up to 10 seconds connection time really
"immediate" either, in fact it's usually closer to 8 seconds... however,
nowhere near the 1 or 2 seconds I was expecting and which you have
experienced... Truthfully, I am more impressed with the reliability of the
connections...

>I have been very happy with the P25.
>
>Pieter Stouten

I did not realize that there was a way to directly connect my Mac via
ethernet to ISDN... certainly none of the "experts" I've been talking to
have pointed out the possibility of connecting direct to the internet by
way of an ethernet/ISDN router/adapter thereby bypassing the limitations of
my mac's serial port speeds... Other issues would include relative cost
($350+ for BitSURFER/$550 for Ascend Pipeline 25-Px), and possibly limits
associated with the bus speed of my mac itself (I am told that this is a
factor? ...).

Obviously the possibility of not having to use either of my serial ports
for internet access is very inviting... Combine that with my dream of
really high speed access and I know that I will soon be shelling out for an
"upgrade" REAL SOON NOW -:)

By the way, according to Ascend's web site you can upgrade your P25 to
25-Px with just a download... check it out.

Does anyone *prefer* the new print dialog to the old one? If not, Apple

ideal book should contain as much sort-out-your-own-disaster

past year or so and though I'd like to think that my troubles are
over with an imminent change-over to a Power Mac 8200 I'm
not holding my breath). The two possibilities that I know of are
the Mac Bible and Hayden's Maclopedia. I gather that the latter
is up to date with System 7.5.3 - but the publisher's data also
says it (the book) can tell you who Steve Jobs is - which sounds
a little Mac-for-dummiesish. Advice/comments on these - or
any other - possibilities would be gratefully received.

I did an experiment and merely had to close ppp connection to get a
huge chunk of memory back. So, was it netscape that held onto memory or
something about ppp that held on?
Since I've already incurred the cost of a large amount of ram to fool
with voices in studio vision pro, what to some is a cost of netscape 3.0
is an asset to me. I boosted to 16 meg allocation to netscape 3.0 on his

I'm keeping netscape 3.0 because I like to fool with such confusions.

Subject: Netscape question AND problem with icons

Hi folks,

First of all, I'll get to my most serious question... lately, SOME of the
icons on my hard drive
and ZIP drive, they lose their original icons and are replaced by a
multi-colored "mess" of seemingly
random pixels...

I've done the following as an attempt to fix the (so far) harmlessly
annoying problem :

1) Re-installed System 7.5.3 after having run Disk Doctor (Apple and Norton
Utils, both of which found
minor errors...and fixed them...)

2) Rebuilt the desktop...

3) Zapped the PRAM

In spite of these measures, some icons still become goofy and
multi-colored... Not all, just a few...
I can't find any pattern as to WHICH icons are doing this...

Does anyone recognize this strange affliction? And if so, is there anything
I can do to fix things?

Also, a Netscape question...

I know that Netscape 3.0 is Java-enabled (or something like that), but I've
gone to a few Java sites
and have yet to see any evidence of WHAT it is that Java does... Sometimes
the screen tells me that
I should see a bouncing ball or something silly ,but I just don't see
anything other than those words..

Can someone give me a list of Java sites to test out my new 3.0 update? Or
can someone tell me if
Java requires special setup or processing power...

I'm totally ignorant to the Java craze and I apologize! Any help would be
appreciated greatly!

Thank you,

The Startup Manager would be great if (I must agree with Al here)
it actually worked. Installed on my 660, running 7.5.3 (an otherwise
consistently stable setup) it has consistently crashed and caused my Mac to
drop me into MacsBug. No problems with Conflict Catcher or Extensions
Manager. The one thing I will miss was NSM's ability to recognize and
disable OT's Shared Library Manager. (a memory waste when not running OT
for a session). I guess I will have to continue to disable it
manually....oh well.

etc...
The Main Idea: Create glossary entries containing inline equations for the
character combinations that are not in the character set.

Details:
The inline equation feature of Word is useful for this. Use the overstrike
command in conjuction with the characters of interest. For instance, the
second example ( 'c' with acute) would be entered something like this:
/;O(c,aa);/ where '/;' is the special character to start equations (see the
documentation); 'O' is an uppercase oh (for overstrike); '(c,aa)' are the
arguments to the 'O' command, 9i.e. what you want overstruck -- in this case
a 'c' and an acute accent which I've shown here as 'aa' but which you get on
the Mac by typing option-tilde twice in a row) and ;/ is the special
character for ending (closing) the equation. This (the overstrike) command
can be tweaked to adjust how high the second character is raised, if
necessary, by using the superscript equation command (U, I think -- look it
up) nested inside the 'O' command, something like: /;O(c,U(3,aa));/. The
documentation describes this in correct detail, don't rely on this message
for anything except the general idea - Use the Inline Equation feature.

I purchased an Apple 7100/80 (non-AV) and a Multiple Scan 15 last year.
Since then, I have been through 4 faulty monitors. The red gun has gone

nor my Apple Service Center can come up with a solution.

If you have any knowledge of possible problems with these monitors, video

Also included on that page is my account of how Apple sends reconditioned
monitors out as replacements for faulty monitors (a policy with which I
fervently disagree) AND how I finally talked Apple into offering me an
upgrade to a 17" (which I turned down due to the fact that I feel they
severely misrepresented the current street prices to get me to agree to
the upgrade; and I would have had to sign legal forms agreeing never to
tell anyone about the upgrade).

Now Italian has pure vowals which I suspect might make a program that
used speech recognition into phonetic units quite feasible. Further,
awhile back someone mentioned several phonetic fonts that I kept note of
in im digest.
While recognition into actual spelled words might need sophisticated
artificial intelligence involving not only dictionary hypotheses but
grammatical based hypotheses, the phonetic recognition might not.
I'd like to see that sort of program be made if it hasn't already!

True, although if you do that you'll have to open the files manually and/or
go in with a disk editor to reassign files types and the like. Not within
the capability of most users...
