Motto: "You shouldn't need to understand an AppleScript to use it..."
Description:
Batch FTP is a script for Peter Lewis' Anarchie program. It allows a user
to batch-download a list of files (such as one generated from a new or
recent files list) from an FTP server. Before you dismiss this script with
others of it's kind, read on...it has some features I haven't see
elsewhere.
Features:
* Handy: Files to be downloaded don't need a full path. You can specify one
base path that will apply to all files in the list.
* Smart: Automatically retries minor errors.
* Customizable: Remembers the base paths for up to 4 of your favorite sites.
* Easy: Options to use the preferred info-mac or umich sites specified by

Subject: [*] Coffee Timer 1.0.1J FAT (Japanese version)
Coffee Timer 1.0.1J is the Japanese version of Alessandro Levi Montalcini's
Coffee Timer 1.0.1.
* The Coffee Timer is a very simple countdown timer with a loud alarm and a
couple of other useful options.
* For those of you who need more flexibility in their timer, the Coffee
Timer allows a KeyQuencer macro to be run when the timer times out. This
lets you instruct your Mac to do pretty much anything at alarm time. The
Coffee Timer works with both KeyQuencer 1.2.x and 2.0 (which you don't want
to miss!).
* Quite obviously, the Coffee Timer is not limited to your daily coffee
break. You can use it to remind yourself of anything that must happen in
the near future... filling the bath tub? taking a short sleep? delaying a
fax? Just launch the Coffee Timer and let it help your memory and your
watch.
* You may even put an alias to Coffee Timer in your Startup Items folder to
prevent yourself from sitting in front of your Mac for long periods of
time. All you have to do is take a break every time the timer starts
bugging you...
New in version 1.0.1:
- Updated documentation and recompiled with CodeWarrior 9.
Thanks to Alessandro, for permission to localize his excellent programs.
This is $10 shareware. Have fun and support Alex.

a world of new possibilities for your business. Fax Checks Now allows you
to receive immediate payment for orders over the phone....not by credit
card,
but by check. That's right! Customers can now send payment to you in form
of a faxed check. Once you receive the fax, enter information taken from
each customer's check into Fax Checks Now. Our software will produce a
check (blank laser check stock required) ready to be deposited at your bank
in the name of your customer. This form of payment has been accepted by
banks for years. Personal computer technology has now opened the door,
allowing small firms to make use of this fast growth marketing tool.

Subject: [*] MediaSizer 1.3.3J FAT (Japanese version)
MediaSizer 1.3.3J is the Japanese version of Alessandro Levi Montalcini's
MediaSizer 1.3.3.
* MediaSizer is a small utility that computes the actual size of any number
of files or folders on any media. It is very useful for creating CD-ROMs
and other write-once disks that have large allocation block sizes. The
allocation block size is the minimum space taken up by any file that is
written to a disk; the larger the disk, the larger the allocation block
size.
* SyQuest cartridges, for example, have a much smaller allocation block
size than a CD-ROM; this means that if you have lots and lots of small
files on your cartridges, they may not fit on a CD-ROM even though their
total size is smaller than the size of the CD-ROM. This happens because
each file takes at least 9.5K on a CD-ROM, even if it's only a few bytes
long.

- Updated documentation and recompiled with CodeWarrior 9.

I've got some friends who are opening up a retail outlet and need help
setting up a system to run it. They want to use barcode scanners, and want
to track inventory by scanning in upon receiving and out at the checkout
stand; Sales would automatically decrement inventory counts.
The system would need to have extensive reporting capabilities such as
net/gross sales on demand by product, period of time, or total; current
stock on-hand; pricing of each stock item to integrate with cash drawer,
etc.
Is there an out-of-box system which will handle these types of things? I'd
appreciate info on any system, but Mac stuff is what I really want.
If anyone has any info, please email me and include the word barcode in the

Hello,
Tell me if this would cause you some concern. I've got a Power Mac 7200/120
with a bootin' 1.2 GB Quantum Fireball hard drive. I mention that only
because the drive makes a rather annoying buzzing sound a couple minutes
after boot up. When I reported the problem to my local Apple dealer, I was
told that the buzzing comes from my drive being so fast. Since I don't have
the monitor sitting on top of the CPU, it causes the case to vibrate. In
other words, it's no problem.
What do you think? Will I wake up one morning with a $500 liability and no
data? Or is this really "normal"?
Thanks in advance,

Subject: A GOOD tech support experience to report!
Hi all,
With all the talk on here lately about good tech support versus bad, I
thought I'd relate a GOOD experience I just had with a third party Apple
developer.
The company is GDT Softworks of Canada that make the PowerPrint utility for
Macintosh printing on IBM compatible printers. I bought this utility back
in April of this year (only four months ago) so that my 68K Macs could
print to my HP Officejet fax/printer. It worked great on all my 68K Macs
and it did what it said it would.
Then, after getting a PowerPC Performa two months ago, I noticed that it
did not work well on this computer. In fact, it really didn't work at all.
After printing one page, I'd get the dreaded "Type 11" system error bomb
screen. Reinstall after reinstall did not solve the problem.
Just out of curiosity, I faxed GDT Softworks about this just yesterday. I
explained the problem to them and what it was doing on my Performa. Turns
out that my local Computer City had sold me a very old version of the
product (compared to what's available now). I had bought V. 2.5.2 and they
were up to Version 3 something. It also was now PowerPC native!
I was asked to fax a copy of my original sales slip to GDT and they would
see about getting me an upgrade at no cost because of my circumstances! I
had explained to them that the Computer Cities in this area were all
selling the old Version 2.5.2. and no mention was made of a PowerPC native
version that I had been aware of. I was elated when the sales rep emailed
me back a message a short time later that they would indeed UPS me a new
PowerPC native version of PowerPrint, complete with the new cable required,
and that I would have it in 3-5 business days!!
Now THAT's what I call good service!

Subject: Direct contact from Apple re: REP
Hi list:
I've been reading all these stories here about folks affected by the Repair
Extension Program, like myself, almost all who have been contacted by Apple
Computer directly.
Well, I never got contacted by them. I dutifully sent in my registration
card months ago, have a Performa 6300CD that had the bad disk cache, which
was one of the items affected under the REP. When I realized that I had
one of these defective machines, I simply had to take it to my authorized
Apple dealer and have them fix it, which they did when the parts finally
arrived. Before taking matters into my own hands, however, I waited
patiently for several weeks after the Repair Extension Program was
officially annouced by Apple and never got contacted by them.
I am wondering why I never got called or sent a letter from Apple about
this. I've also heard actual stories about technicians coming to folks'
houses to have the repair performed right in their home, or Fed Ex people
showing up at their door to take away the computer to be repaired.
If Apple is listening, please fill me in on why I got left out of this!

Subject: drive dissapearing and reappearing
Can anyone explain this?
I left for a month and a half. When I got back to my untouched LCIII, the
three partitions on my external gig loaded normally, but my internal 80MB
drive didn't mount. FWB HD toolkit could "see" the drive, but couldn't
touch it - it couldn't mount, format, or even scan the disk. I also tried
Norton Utils (volume recover and Undelete), but it couldn't see it either.
As a last resort, I tried Apple's HD SC setup, and it couldn't even find a
drive at SCSI ID 0.
Sadly, I came to the conclusion that my internal drive was dead and that I
should forget about it.
A few days ago, I turned on my Mac and the drive mounted by itself. I
checked the drive quickly and everything was the way I had left two and a
half months before! I didn't try anything new, nor did I change any of my
SCSI IDs or anything. It now seems to act perfectly as it always had
before.
Any ideas?

Subject: How to Transcribe Mac OS Files to PC Windows 95 Format
I have been asked to make copies on floppy disks of some rather
large text files so they can be read on a PC in Windows 95 format.
I wrote them on my 6100/66 Power Mac using Microsoft Word
version 6.0.
This computer has an internal card which makes it is DOS compatible.
I understand that would enable me to simultaneously run Mac OS and
DOS and Windows (PC) applications, although I haven't yet attempted
to do so and haven't located any instructions for that. I presume I
can somehow transcribe the Mac files to Windows format; however,
I have an earlier version of Windows, not Windows 95.
I would prefer not to have to buy Windows 95 for what may be
only a one-time use. Egghead's price for an upgrade is $299.95.
I am looking for a way to make these files readable on a PC
with Windows 95. I hope I won't have to retype the files as there
are three, and each one is about 50 pages long.
The individual requesting the files is actually a client who wouldn't
want to bother converting my files if I transcribed them to my
earlier version of Windows. Perhaps that isn't a problem if
Windows 95 software can read my version of Windows, but I don't
want to take a chance by sending him something he can't use.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

The brief answer is: Open Transport is the Way, the Light and the Truth.
Despite technical boogums with the release of OT 1.0.x etc.. OT 1.1 is very
stable. As you discussed OT 1.1 doesn't work with 5200/5300/6200/6300
Performas, although OT 1.1.1 fixes this problem. I would wait until the
final release of OT 1.1.1 before installing on these machines.
(In fact, as a general rule unless you are compelled to install beta
software because you are a developer, or it has a critical feature: don't.
Beta software has bugs and will cause you grief. Let the people who are
payed to suffer, do the suffering for you.
But if you can, you should run Open Transport. There are no compelling
reasons yet, but all modern networking applications will be designed to
work with OT and compelling applications, which can only run under OT, will
begin to appear. OT is more stable, better implemented and it is going
somewhere. The TCP/IP implementation is significantly more robust. In
general OT is marginally faster for most users. (The beta, OT only, native
PPP software 'Paris' is much faster.)
As a side note, Mac TCP Watcher 2.0's traceroute function only works under
OT: it is straightforward to implement under OT but quite hard to implement
under MacTCP. Not quite compelling, but an indicator of the differences.
(Please excuse the advertising plug.

Subject: Modern Memory Manager
I need help with a suggestion I don't understand.
I am having problems starting ccMail Mobile on my PB520c.
Short version is I have tried almost everything (including zapping PRAM and
rebuilding the Desktop) short of reformatting my hard drive or buying a new

another PB520c)
Lotus support on CompuServe also suggested that I "Try disabling the modern

the modern memory manager was a PowerMac item.
I am running system 7.5.3 (all updates, revisions, enhancements, etc.).
The Memory control panel is version 7.5.5 (reads System 7.5 update 2.0).
There is no "modern memory manager". I am missing something (or is someone
else!)?
Thanks for any help.
Long version of what I've done (copy of message to Lotus follows):

running system 7.5.3 and cannot get it to startup. It does install and run
on a Mac LC (68020 chip), running system 7.1. Is the system I'm running
(likely, I think) or the processor?
When I start up ccMail Mobile on the PB, I get the splash screen for about
23 seconds, then MacsBug jumps in with a error message: Unimplemented

I have increased ccMail Mobile's memory to 3000k. I have tried it without
RamDoubler. There is no change in the behaviour.
Using Extensions Manager, I have tried the following:
1. Loading no extensions and control panels, I first get a warning:
Connection Manager Error= CMNoTools, then a Finder error: System Error
error type 10. This gives me only one choice--Restart.
2. Loading with only system 7.5.x extensions and control panels I get the
same thing.
3. Loading with only Apple Modem Tool 1.5.3, I get the same thing, except
no warning about the Connection Manager Error.
I have a PB520c, running system 7.5.3 (all the latest updates and
revisions), internal Global Village PowerPort Mercury modem (set to normal
mode since cc:Mail uses the Communiction Toolbox). I am also using Open
Transport 1.1 (successfully, I might add, to connect via Ethernet and
AppleTalk networks when needed, dial-up internet via MacPPP 2.5). I have a
lot of extensions and control panels running (my system software is listed
as 7300k by About this Macintosh). And though I have 20 megs of real ram, I
do use RamDoubler. Also running is MS Office.

Subject: more info on strange crashes
Hi folks,
I wrote a few days ago with a strange problem. It seemed that my computer
was "randomly" crashing,in such a way
that a Conflict Catcher extension check would have been ineffective. I've
taken everyone's advice,including Apple. I installed
a fresh new system 7.5.3 on my Performa 630, zapped the PRAM,rebuilt the
desktop,trashed some prefs,and so on.
I also added back many of my third party extensions... the necessary ones
only... and since the errors continue, it HAS to be
because of one of those...
and so,on to my point (such that it is!)...
I've discovered a pattern of sorts in how the computer crashes...
It ALWAYS crashes first thing in the morning after being off for several
hours. The last thing I do at night is always
a Web browsing session through Netscape via Open Transport. When I'm done,I
close Netscape and shut down. I haven't been
closing my PPP connection, but I just assume that once the computer is off,
the remote host would disconnect anyway...
could this be a problem?? Tonight I'll be sure everything is shut down
before I "shut down"...but I really do think the
errors will continue. That would be too easy of a solution... and not
really a logical solution at that...
Also....during the bootup, when my mouse cursor appears, normally I can
begin to move the mouse right away. However, when it
crashes, obviously the mouse cursor doesn't work.. BUT,sometimes, the cursor
UNfreezes when the startup is completed. Also,
the cursor speed of the mose seems to be affected... Sometimes, although I
have the cursor set at it's highest rate of speed,
it moves sluggishly... other times,it's fine..
This is all so baffling... if anyone sees anything which rings a
bell,please drop me a line!
thanks!

As a general rule files should be MacBinary (.bin) encoded if you wish to
preserve the resource fork. Otherwise .sit files can be transferred in
binary mode safely, unless it has been password protected, in which case
the resource fork contains useful and necessary stuff.
Having said that, recently many files have been BinHexed so that they can
be downloaded through your Web browser using an http URL. BinHexing the
file means that the web browser is only handling text, and not 8 bit
characters...
Even then BinHex'd downloads through a web browser often fail because the
web browser removes the all important CR/LF just before the initial colon
in the encoded text. If you have a file which has completely downloaded
but doesn't seem to want to un-BinHex, get a copy of HexEdit, open the file
and look for this sequence:
be converted with BinHex 4.0):
...then insert a return character by clicking between the right bracket and
the colon and using control-M (return). Save the file, drop it on Stuffit
Expander and it should work.

Subject: PB 540c and System 7.5.3 ?
I have installed the update to 7.5.3 on the PB 540c earlier
this week. It seems that something doesn't work as it should
- is there anything I missed?
The problem: When the PB 540c is connected (via PhoneNet) to
a printer, the startup process stops before the first extension
icons are displayed at the screen bottom. As soon as I unplug the
connector, it continues to start as usual, without problems. I
can also print (it seems to need more time to prepare for
printing than 7.5.1 but this is probably another story).
This phenomenon of the startup process stopping does not
occur on my other Mac, a Centris 650 with a PPC upgrade card.
I tried starting WITHOUT extensions (both via extension manager
and manually by the "shift-key-method"), with "7.5.3 only", and
I even checked the HD with Disk First Aid and with Central Point
Mac Tools v3, but there are no problems reported by these two
applications.
Any ideas? (Of course, I can go back to 7.5.1; I have a copy of
the old system folder on another harddisk).
Thanks in advance -- Christian

The 603 and 603e are succesors to the 601 PowerPC chip, but they aren't
actually faster. The 603 had a different L1 cache structure to the 601
which, because of its size, made a significant speed difference when the
PowerPC was emulating 68K code. (The emulator couldn't fit in the cache.)
The 603e fixes this problem.
Cycle for cycle the 601 is faster than a 603e. But 603e uses later designs
which are smaller and therefore cheaper. (They also have low power
designs, which don't exist for the 601.) The 603e can also be pushed to a
higher speed. A 66Mhz 601 is faster than a 75Mhz 603e- the performance
difference is not huge.
The 604e is another design cycle again and as someone else mentioned is
roughly 50% faster cycle for cycle, given equivalent setups.
The biggest factor in performance for a machine running Photoshop or Image
Analysis software will be how much RAM you have. Too much is barely
enough.
them. Speedwise they are several generations behind, and you pay roughly
AU$2000, just for the colour active matrx LCD. Unless there are truly
compelling reasons, buy a desktop machine.

Hi Manish!
By now you are probably drowning in replies from all over the World.
Anyway, here's one from Sweden too. If the German keyboards are anything
like the Swedish, your friend should be able to generate the "@" character
by pressing the "'" key with the ALT key down at the same time. (This is
kind of tricky to describe in text, but when i write "'" I mean the key
just left of the RETURN key; the key that also generates a "*" character on
a Swedish keyboard when SHIFT is down.)
If the German keyboards turn out to be different than the Swedish, ask your
friend to select "Keyboard" under the Apple menu. When a window displaying
the keyboard shows up, tell him to hold ALT down and ask him if he can find
the "@" sign. If that doesn' work ask him to try ALT+SHIFT or any other
combination that seems fruitful. Sooner or later he will find it.
Good luck,

Well, on a US keyboard, it's shift-2.
If I select the German keyboard layout, it's at shift-option-1.

Power off all devices prior to changing SCSI chain configuration:
Always turn off the Macintosh and all peripherals before attaching or
detaching any cables or devices or changing SCSI ID numbers. Doing
otherwise could cause permanent physical damage to your computer or SCSI
devices as well as the loss of important data. Attach the proper cables to
their devices. Use the thumbscrews and metal clamps on the cables to
maintain a tight, reliable connection. Do not over-tighten.
So Apple says No.
Personally I do it all the time on all sorts of machines. I've hot swapped
my 1Gig and 2Gig drives on a Centris 610, LC 630s, 7100/66, 7200/75,
7200/90... In my opinion it is safe. Remember to unmount the drives before
unplugging from a computer (by dragging them to the trash), try not to do
it while the SCSI bus is being used and make sure that you don't have
conflicting SCSI IDs before you plug it in. As you say, you need to use
software to mount the drive once it is physically connected.
But when in doubt don't.
(I'm fairly sure the SCSI-3 standards support hot swapping. There are no
SCSI-3 peripherals available yet- you'll know about it when they are.
Firewire is the serial SCSI-3 standard and it definitely supports
hot-swapping, plus many other very cool features. Both Mac and Wintel
machines will be supporting Firewire at some point in the future.)

Wayne C. Morris has already pointed out some confused
language here, so I won't repeat his comments.
However, if your System Folder is taking up more hard disk space then this
may be caused by your Web browser. The web browser cache is stored in your
Preferences folder, so your System Folder may be taking up more space
because the browser cache is filling.
(Browsers store copies of pages you have downloaded in a local cache so
that if you wish to return to that web page it can rapidly load the page
>From your hard disk, rather than re-downloading it. You can set how much
space it uses in the preferences. In Netscape look under Options:Network
Preferences, and in Internet Explorer look under the Edit:Options:Advanced.)

Subject: [Q] Fixing Font ID Conflicts with Resedit?
I recently ran ResConflicts (part of Masterjuggler 1.90) and found
that I have several font ID number conflicts. Most of them are between
shareware fonts and commercial ones (all postscript), however I need to
mix these often, so must be able to have then open at the same time.
QuarkXPress hasn't experienced a problem yet, but Clarisworks has. I
think it should be possible to reasign a number ID number to the
offending fonts with Resedit, but I was wondering if someone could advise
me on the following things:
* Do I need to change resources in the Postscript and bitmap, or just
one?
* What resources need to be changed?
* What numbers should I reassign fonts to?
* Will this cause problems in documents already using these fonts?
Thank you in advance for your help, (and could you please cc: any
