Subject: [*] Fonts Manager 3.6
Fonts Manager is functionally similar to the System 7.5.x Extensions
Manager, but it is NOT a control panel. It is more like a Desk Accessory.
It allows the enabling and disabling of font suitcases and printer fonts in
'Sets'. It supports export of 'Sets', import of saved 'Sets', Balloon Help,
and a Help Topics system. Unlike other utilities, it works on ALL Macs with
System 7.1 or later, including 7.5.3, without modifying the NORMAL startup
and operation of your computer. Thousands worldwide running all kinds of
Macs have switched to Fonts Manager to get 'Up & Running'.
NEW in 3.6:
- Save 'Sets' for export purposes (great for site-license standardization
of sets, or to upgrade beyond version 3.6 without losing time invested in
creating sets -> Apologies for not bringing this back sooner!)
- Open 'Sets' from previous export (this is the companion to the Save
function) - command-period disabled for quit (only command-Q or Quit from
the file menu works) - cleaned up quite a bit of internal code for speed
NEW in 3.5.2:
- NEW progress bars (no more guessing what's happening)
- faster launch
- ignores extra folders in Fonts folder, instead of just hanging or
crashing (although the Fonts folder should NEVER have folders inside it,
I've now allowed for that, just in case that's part of your font management
strategy)
Available at
,
, AOL
(Computing/Software Libraries/Desktop Publishing or Software Search).
Shareware fee is $10 for Fonts Manager (FREE to registered users of ALL
earlier versions). $More for the Mac OS 8 version when available (save
time/hassle - pay now). Site licenses available at SUBSTANTIALLY REDUCED
PRICES. Inquire within...

Subject: (A) PB 160 Battery
My original request was for info on replacing the PRAM battery on a
PowerBook 160 (since I was going inside to upgrade RAM and HD anyway).
I was sent a copy of the Tech info from Apple which was some help, but
(naturally) was not explicit enough. It said the battery was "attached" to
the mother board and only gave the Apple part number. Of course it said
that the battery was replaceable only by authorized repair persons. But
they've said that about various parts of various Macs before...
In this case, it turns out they are right (at least as far as my skills
go). I opened up the PB, took everything apart, replaced the HD, added the
RAM card, etc. In my travels inside, I found the battery soldered on to
one of the boards. The battery is a tiny thing, reminds me of an old
transistor, 3/8" long, wrapped in gray plastic. Not the sort of thing
you'd find at Radio Shack... And I'm not too keen about soldering stuff on
my motherboard (though I have done it on cheaper computers).
So if anyone knows where I can buy the battery and wants to encourage me
to have a go at it, I'm all ears (and I hope not thumbs!).

Subject: Another SOS-APPL Horror Story
I've also had a problem with Apple's tech support. I just purchased Apple
Remote Access a few months ago with the intent of using it with Megaphone
and the Fax software with my GeoPort Telecom Adapter. I'd be able to call
in and a) leave a voice message, b) send a fax, or c) call in with ARA.
This is one of the things that made me want a GeoPort. When I tried it,
though, everything would work except ARA. MegaPhone would keep picking up.
When I called Apple, the guy told me it was not Apple's problem, but was
Cypress Research's (MegaPhone's) problem. Again, that "Can't be us, has to
be third party software" syndrome.
I told them that the fax worked fine, and I was convinced it worked because
the fax machine puts out an identifying tone on the line. The Express
Modem control panel recognizes that tone and routes the call to the fax
software. I told him when I used ARA it didn't identify itself as anything
special with any kind of tone. He told me MegaPhone just doesn't recognize
the identifying tone of the data call (completely ignoring the point that
there *was* no identifying data tone).
At this point I was so frustrated, because this great functionality I
thought I was going to have with voice, fax, and data capabilities on one
machine (that was one of the selling points of the GeoPort) was apparently
not possible. The tech guy told me to set the Express Modem to route
unidentified calls to the data program instead of the voice program. When
I explained that entirely wipes out the voice-messaging capability, he said
"Well, that's about your only option. The Express Modem control panel was
never intended to auto-select between these different types of calls. You
should call Cypress and see when they will have an update to the program
which will properly route the calls.
Well, it turns out I've found an updated modem script that properly
identifies ARA as a data call. And (whadayaknow) the Express Modem control
panel happily routes the incoming call over to ARA.
Not only am I *real* irritated at this tech support person not having a
*clue* about the GeoPort functionality, and his insistence on blaming
someone else, I'm also reasonably irritated that this modem script didn't
come with ARA. It would have made my life much easier and worked right out
of the box. I bought the GeoPort about three years ago and ARA just a few
months ago. Why aren't the new modem scripts included with ARA by this
point?
Randall
p.s. The modem script which works (at least w/ ARA 2.0) is 'GeoPort=81
Telecom ARA 2.x/CNG'.

Subject: Apple (Mas Y Menos)
I'm of a couple different minds regarding Apple Computer this
evening. On the one hand, Apple handled the recall of my PB5300cs
professionally. I got a letter last month detailing problems that
had been found and asking me to call an 800 number even if I had
not experienced those problems. I called. I told the woman that I
had had none of the problems noted in the letter. She said "Great,
but we want your computer back anyway. Since you haven't had the
problems, do you mind if we don't pick it up until August 6?" No,
I didn't mind.
At noon on Aug 6, a fedex type came by with a box into which I was
to put my PB and its battery and its powerbrick. He waited as I put
the PB etc into the box and left. Aug 6 was Tuesday. The PB was back
that Friday. The 9th. The same day that TechTool tells me the beast
was made. Wow. No, I haven't the foggiest notion of what Apple did.
But they did it quickly with minimal disruption. The only oddity I
noted was that the PB would not link through its IR port with my
Farallon AirDock. Network CP showed AppleTalk instead of IRTalk.
I changed that and all seems hunky dory.
The bad news is that the new MacLeak says Apple is discontinuing
the 5300cs. Oh pooh! Obsolete in three months? Right up there with
the IIvs I bought for the office in a fit of stupidity some years
back. But Lord! The IIvs was a piece of used food. Ah well. Apple
has flushed some pretty good computers. The SE30 comes to mind.
Another downer: LaserWriter 8.4. This is getting silly. LW 8.3 took
three 1.4m floppies. The 8.4 persuasion wants five. That's enough
to annoy me. The installer got me incensed. The README says that
Desktop Printers (for which I've no use) can be installed with the
custom option. Seemed to imply that DTP wouldn't be installed with
the easy-install option. Nope. Easy yields DTP. Next machine install
I asked for custom install and deselected the two options related to
desktop printing. Got the same thing. Oh give me a break, Apple! Did
anyone bother to verify the readme's information or bother to verify
the installer?
Ah well. At least there is both good news and bad news.

Replace the battery which keeps up the settings. If the casing is similar

In fact the plugin in the ProjectX site downloaded today 8/18/96,

Subject: Filemaker Pro Server vs. Tango or equivalent
I would greatly appreciate conversing with some folks who are using
Filemaker Server Pro or an Internet feed to access a series of multi-user
FMP databases from remote locations. We are running a connected set of six
databases on a PPC6100/80/16 and are looking to move it towards a
client-server basis.
Our specific goal is to have as much processing as possible executed on the
server with only the front and back end of the transactions passed over the
wire. Is this the purpose/function of the FileMaker Pro Server application?
Also, does the use of a WWW-based interface to FMP such as the Tango
product do the same thing? For our purposes, a WWW application might be
better, as we hook in from a wide variety of geographical locations. Your
feedback, either public or private, would be appreciated.

Help!
I have a PowerBook Duo 230 with an internal Macintosh express fax/modem.
I purchased PSI NET's InterRamp software to access the Web.
I installed PSI NET's product and after following slavishly the instructions
to install both alone and with a tech support person from PSI, I have been
unable to connect to the internet.
Specifically, I receive a ppp error that says that the serial port is in
use and should not be.
Occasionally I receive a ppp error waiting for ok.
My modem is NEVER accessed.
NO SOUNDS OF DIALING -- I never get that far.
PSI said that they could not help me until the serial port was available.
I have also logged a tech support call with Apple who has been unable
to help me with this problem.
I naively thought that maybe some magic Fax software was tying up my
serial port for example (I imagined that something was the culprit).
I tried clearing PRAM?? with Apple-Option-P-R (apple's suggestion).
I made sure appletalk was off
I made sure appletalk was on
I made sure mactcp was selected
I made sure mactcp was not selected
I made sure there was a configppp file in my control panel
I made sure there was not configppp file in my control panel
I reloaded the software etc.
Please respond by email -- I do have access to email through Eudora
which calls my west coast home office (not the net!)
I would be thrilled to learn that I am a bonehead and the problem is stupid.
At least I could connect and get on with business:)

Just thought I'd ask:
Why is it that all Mac files on the internet are binhexed? All this
seems to do is balloon the file size and make downloading difficult,
since I end up with 3 things on my desktop for every 1 file that I
download (.hqx, .sit, uncompressed folder).
I've done some experiments here at work here that tell me that this
step is unnecessary. I've uploaded .sit files as raw data to both
Unix and NT ftp servers. They come back and work perfectly. I've
also moved these files to DOS FAT filesystems using Windows NT server,
(which pretends its a Mac using Appleshare) and brought them back as
pc files using dos floppy or recordable cd. These dos .sit files open
fine if you open the stuffit program first, then open the archive.
You know, the generic files that say "PC" on them and have their file
type set to ttext, creator mdos.
Anyway, am I doing something wrong??? Please reply and tell me why.
If I'm right, please STOP THE MADNESS !! Tell all your Mac friends
around the world to stop making life difficult for the rest of us.
This extra step increases download time and wastes our time on
conversion.
Also, you never see PC users binhexing their zip files. The sit files
seem to have only the data fork, so what is the difference?
Trying to save you time,
Mike Miller

I relied entirely on Goodman's book to learn AppleScript. It is OK, but

I really like the styled text feature in Eudora Pro 3.0, but want to know how

I assume that there are three classes of readers:
1. Those that will interpret the style information

3. Those that show all the brackets and tags, making the message unreadable.
Is this right? What are the proportions of these in the real world?

Subject: Modem/modem port problem
My modem gave up the ghost a week and a half back.
I couldn't make a connection to my ISP - PPP failed to connect with an
error message that it could not transmit data to the modem.
Also, I could not log into the local MUG, a FirstClass board.
FirstClass simply could not reset the modem.
I've bought another modem, but there is still a problem that makes me
think there might also have been some damage to my modem port.
When I connected up the new modem, I got the same error from PPP - could
not send data to modem.
So I went into Config PPP and changed the flow-control setting from to . My connections with my ISP worked fine after
that.
Unfortunately, FirstClass still won't work - the software still keeps
trying to reset the modem without success.
I've checked the modem, the modem port and the SCC chip with TechTool
Pro, which reports no problems.
Using MicroPhone, the modem responds OK to AT. But nothing to +++.
Also, I can only communicate with the modem using MicroPhone's default
settings (Xon-Xoff). As soon as I switch to hardware flow control,
MicroPhone locks up and I have to force-quit. The modem is a
SupraExpress 336e so the cable (which is an undetachable part of the
modem) is definitely a hardware-handshaking cable.
Any ideas? Please?

Subject: Paperport and Select 310
I am writing for my not so computer savvy father. He has a PowerMac
6100/60 and has recently purchased an original Paperport scanner and
upgraded to the 3.5.2 version of the software. He has a Laserwriter Select
310 printer, and since installing the scanner he has been experiencing
printer problems - specifically slowdowns.
For software that is not related to the PP, what used to take 30 seconds to
print now runs 3 to 5 minutes (Microsoft Word documents, for example).
Scanned documents stay in limbo for up to an hour, with PrintMonitor
showing "Processing job" while he waits for output.
He is running System 7.5 Update 2 (7.5.3), and the 5 April InfoAlley
indicated that installing Serial DMA 2.0.2 and updating the printer driver
to the Select 310 version 7.0.1 would fix printing slowdown problems. I
grabbed the Select 310 driver and Serial DMA off of the Apple Software
Updates ftp site. The Serial DMA I got from 7.5.2 Printing fix (it is
version 2.0.2 as specified) was installed, and now on startup the message
"There is an extension 'Serial DMA' in the extension folder. The system
software has this functionality" or some similar message appears. The
documentation for 7.5 Update 2 implies that Serial DMA 2.0.2 is part of the
update, but a search of his hard drive shows only the one I sent him.
I do not have a Paperport, and he lives 60 miles away, so I've been trying
to troubleshoot this for him via telephone. Everything I've suggested so
far has been to no avail, so I thought I would ask if there might be some
known conflicts so that we can narrow this down.
As an added point, my sister has a nearly identical machine with a
Paperport (also not a VX but also with the upgraded software), and she
doesn't have this problem. The only real difference I've been able to
discern is that she has a Stylewriter (II, with 1200 software) rather than
the laserwriter.
I would appreciate any help you could pass on. Unfortunately, I'm the one
with a modem and an internet account, not my father, or I'd have him be in
direct contact with you.

This is an interesting bug that I think I have discovered. I am having
problems getting a directory listing from a machine in Japan. I can get
into my account using a Mac configured with MacTCP and also using a PC, but
when using my PB8500 with OT I can get in OK with either Anarchie or Fetch,
but not get a directory listing. I notice the srever is running the
following software:
220 nihsout.nihs.go.jp FTP server (Version wu-2.4.2-academ[BETA-10](1)
It may be that the problem is with the set up at the other end since I can
log in using anonymous FTP without any problems with my OT Mac but not when
I try my own account.
Anyone experience a similar problem or may know what is going on??

Subject: Question about 6200CD
Dear digest reader,
I have three questions and I hope that someone will be able to help me:
1) I wonder if the cache level2 is direclty soldered on the motherboard on the
Macintosh Performa 6200CD. My cache memory is damaged and Id like to know if I
must replace the whole logic board;
2) Someone told me that Macintosh Performa have slower serial ports than other
(new) Macintosh models, and that the ports are limited to 80Kbps. Is it true?
3) Can I use Open transport 1.1 on my Macintosh Performa 6200CD because I know
that OT is NOT installed by default on PPC Performa series with the Update
2.0.
Do you think that these models can run OT if they have enough RAM or that thes
e macs are not able to run it at all? Is OT interesting for me (for Internet us
e only)?
Any comment is welcome to [email protected]. TIA,
Laurent.

Subject: Quickbooks questions
I will shortly be preparing a review of Quickbooks 4.0 for Macintosh and
posting it on my web page. But first a couple of questions that maybe a
more experienced user can answer.
The Tech Support offered by Intuit is abominable and sufficiently bad to
make me reconsider recommending the product.
They have a web site, but there is no way to contact Tech Support with a
question except through a telephone number. When I tried, I was told by a
machine that I would have to wait 30 minutes. There is no way I will wait
30 minutes on hold, long distance, for someone to answer a question! At a
minimum, there should be a way to fax questions or, more importantly, to
email questions.
If someone from Intuit monitors this newsgroup, I would certainly encourage
a response.
To my questions, from an inital review.
1) According to the manual (page 462, Transaction Journal), it should be
possible to review the journal entry associated with an entry currently in
progress. When I tried, I was told that the entry had to be recorded first.
Is there an alternate way to view the entry in standard accounting format
prior to finishing it off?
2) Is there a way to set up an inventory item, for example a vehicle (Car
Dealership), then add additional cost (work orders) without incrementing
the number of units? I was unable to do so.
3) Is there a way to check the integrity of the data? Simply Accounting
offers such a check, so you can determine whether the ledger is still in
balance, and whether the subledgers balance to the ledger.
There maybe more questions. If there is a better newsgroup to post this to,
please advise.
Thank you very much.

Subject: SE POWER SUPPLY
I recently acquired a SE that was not working. On examination of the
machine I found the diode CR3 in the video section was broken. Yes it
was in two pieces. The diode is next to C13 and connects to one of the
pins in the fly back transformer. I tacked a 1-kv 1-amp diode to the
board and the machine booted and the video was good. The diode I used
gets too hot to touch and when I checked the diode in an old 512 machine
it was very cool, you could hold your hand on it. The voltages measured
12 volts on one side and about 20 volts on the other. The voltages were
the same in both the SE and the 512. The current is the same on both
machines, something over 1/2 amp (my meter only measures up to 1/2 amp).
Don+t know what caused the diode to blow but I would like to replace it
with one that is health enough to take the load. I have tried to find
the electrical properties of this diode but no one seems to know,
including Apple.
So my question to the INFOMAC group. What are the electrical properties
of this diode. The numbers on the diode is GI 854727 and has a fairly
healthy lead on it. The diode body measures about 3/16 inch in diameter
and is 3/8 inch long. Any help would be appreciated.

Subject: Sorting connection records
Hi guys !
Thanks for your consistently interesting and informative efforts. They are
always appreciated- especially in Japan where info is hard to find!
I have a question. My provider supplies log-in connection records which
we can access through dialup IP. The Japanese telephone monopoly-KDD offers
a cheap tel.service between 11 pm and 8.00 am which I use frequently (the
cost of living in Japan being what it is-say no more).
My problem is sorting through these records to establish just how many
connection mins. actually fall into this time slot. As I connect hundreds
of times a month, I wonder does anyone have any ideas on how I can do
this. I use netscape to obtain these records and then print them out,
sorting by hand afterwards from the printout. Very tiring!
Is there a shareware solution ?
Any help vastly appreciated. David

Subject: SOS-APPL horror (and PB 5300cs horror)
I was going to write and see if other users were having problems with their
PB5300, but after reading Larry Burris's post, I thought I'd include my
experience with SOS-APPL.
I bought my 5300 last November. Around Christmas, the AC adaptor port on
the back of the computer broke (I think the connection came loose off the
motherboard) and I sent the computer back for warranty repair. My SOS-APPL
response during that time was quite satisfactory: the motherboard was
replaced and the computer was again up and running.
Several months later, I realized the case was cracked where the battery
slides in; this became apparent when the battery slid out and the computer
stopped in its tracks. Since then, I had been meaning to call Apple to see
if this was covered under the cracking case recall, but the computer worked
so the crack was relegated to the to-do list.
Over the past several weeks, the computer has intermittently (but with
progressing regularity) stopped charging when the AC adaptor is plugged in.
If you gently wiggle the adaptor in the port, a sufficient connection is
made that the battery starts charging again. IMHO, the port looks kind of
flimsy compared to earlier Powerbook models, and I felt a call to Apple was
in order while I had a real problem and am under warranty.
** Before I go on, has anyone else had a reoccurring problem with the AC
port or am I seeing an isolated problem?
Now to the SOS-APPL call. My wife explains the charging problem and also
brings up the cracked case. The Apple rep says there is nothing wrong with
the AC port and the reason it isn't charging is because the battery isn't
seated properly. But if this is so, why does wiggling the adaptor solve
the problem without touching the battery? Also, with the adaptor in, the
computer responds to the battery draining. Even if the battery isn't
seated properly, shouldn't the computer just run off of AC? And wouldn't
the battery not drain? To top it all, the Apple rep says that Apple isn't
responsible for cracks in the case, so there is no warranty issue.
However, he did arrange for the computer to be shipped back to Apple and
they will consider fixing the case under warranty.
Now, if indeed the cracked case is not a warranty item, I thank Apple for
looking at it and considering a warranty repair. I just hope the problem
report explains the AC adaptor problem and that doesn't get lost in the
cracked case issue. Anyway, do I misunderstand the flow of electrons or
was this another Apple rep with no clue?
One final question for those of you who have hung on this long: while
trying to back up the computer before shipping it back, the mouse froze in
the upper left corner during booting and no amount of rebooting shook it
loose. The computer was otherwise fully functioning; anything that could
be done entirely through the keyboard without a mouse worked fine. I
finally tried plugging in the keyboard from my IIsi. The mouse worked fine
with this keyboard. And, lo and behold, when I unplugged the external
keyboard, the 5300 trackpad was functioning again. Any suggestions about
what happened.

DA II works fine w/ my 7200 w/ 753 and TFI. Default Folder is nice but
not nearly as good.

Dear Digest Readers,
Thanks to your replies, the solution was finally found to the Magic Menu
problem. It turns out if you have Stuffit 4.0 commercial version on a
PCI PowerMac (possibly other machines too), you can have True Finder
Integration Control Panel set to either load the Stuffit Browser, or the
Magic Menu, but NOT both. If both are loaded at the same time, the
result is a Type 10 error and a forced reboot every time you boot with
these settings. I hope Aladdin is listening.

I have bought three Performa since Nov. 1995 and I havn't received any gifts.
Even, in the last card, I enclosed a letter and explained the situation. I
think
we should protest and sent a petition to Apple, what do you think pals?

Subject: System 7.5.3 Revision 2 Creeping System Folder
I have a PM 7200/90 w/ 16MB RAM running 7.5.3 rev 2, which I clean
installed about two weeks ago after using disk tools to check my
HD and update the driver as recommended in the Apple instructions.
Since then, my System Folder has started taking up more and more
RAM every day. I'm running the same extensions/control panels as
before the install. On Wednesday, it was taking up 8MB, but today
it's up to 9MB!!!
This is really getting to be a problem because I only have 16MB
of real RAM (Yeah, I have virtual memory turned on, but who wants
to use their whole HD for that?)
I don't usually have time to read the digest, so it would be nice if
you could reply directly to [email protected]. I can certainly
summarize for the list if I get some good answers/suggestions.

Yes, Eudora Pro will handle UUENCODED attachments, both sending and receiving.
Install it NOW! No excuses! You'll be glad you did!
Really, installing Eudora Pro will be a lot faster than fetching and
installing some piece of shareware, and it'll be a LOT more convenient to
use.

It sounds like a focal plane shutter on a single lens reflex, quickly followed

a motor drive, firing at about 1/30 second.

Quite simple if you know how to work with ResEdit.
Open the system file (make _SURE_ not to edit/save any changes!!! Better
yet, make a duplicate from the finder first and open this file).
Look for the "sound" item (the icon resembles a sys7 sound file), open it,
and apart from your known beep sounds there are two "negative id #"
resources. The one with id # -16504 is the shutter sound. You could copy
this item and paste it into an opened system 7 soundfile. Then change the
id to a positive number.
Good luck!

Subject: Windows '95 on a Mac - alternatives?
It is becoming more and more important to me to have Windows '95
available on my Mac in order to interact with colleagues.
I understand that one can either purchase SoftWindows '95 or a Pentium
card (with the latter unavailable for a Powerbook).
The rumour mill seems to indicate that the next wave of Macs will be able
to run both the Mac OS and Windows '95 in a 'native' fashion. Is this
true? When will such computers be on the market? What will be the specs
of such machines (i.e. will it be similar to a performa, PMac 7600 or
PMac 9500 in performance and price)?
Thanks in advance for any tidbits and hints that you can pass on.
