Subject: [*] b&b-pilot-episode

If you have an appreciation for clever but tasteless depictions of
overplayed stereotypes, then Buck & Bruce are for you! The creator of the
Wacked Sounds Collection has teamed up with his buddy to create the first
and only Internet Sit-Com! You have stumbled across the Pilot Episode of
Buck & Bruce which includes their first meeting. Where they go from here...
Who knows? We are certainly open to input. But we need to know if we have
an audience, so response is essential. If you find yourself saving a small
corner of your hard drive to watch the saga of Buck & Bruce's antics, feel
free to suggest possible situations you we like to see them stuck in. We
are open to all ideas.

Feel free to upload anywhere and place on any CD-Rom as long as the package
remains complete, unaltered, and with the Readme document.

Subject: [*] CA$H3

CA$H3 is a lottery program designed for those in Florida (or other states)
whose daily cash drawing is a pick of three numbers 0-9. You enter the
winning numbers from each daily drawing and the program uses that data to
pick 10 "lucky" numbers. The more winning numbers you put in, the more
accurate it becomes. This program is so good and we at MagicHat are so sure
it will win you money that you don't have to pay a registration fee until
you win TWICE ! Instructions for it's use are included in the program.
DON'T PASS THIS ONE BY & GOOD LUCK TO YOU.

CalendarMDEF is an MDEF useful to enter a date using only the mouse. Only
few lines of code are needed to insert it into an application, and it can
save you a lot of keystrokes.

The documentation contains detailed instructions on how to use it. This is
a demo, but you can have a full version for free. Read the documentation.

DDTC is a delay time calculator that works similar to Don Harriss's
"DelayCalc 1.8." I used "DelayCalc 1.8" for years and was very happy with
it, but it stopped working with the introduction of sys. 7.5. I could not
find a suitable replacement for it, so I wrote DDTC. Here it is. Enjoy!

Subject: [*] Focus Comatose 4.2.3

Comatose will help you prolong the life of your computer and save on
electricity while doing so!! It allows you to put your computer to sleep
rather than shut down the entire system. It works with all Macintoshes Plus
and later running system 7 or later and only 145K of memory. Comatose spins
down all hard drives on all SCSI buses and dim the screen to black. The
screen blacking allows some monitors to also power down, adding to
electricity savings. Your computer will run quieter when comatosed and
takes a fraction of time to start up when compared to switching off or shut
down. Comatose also has screen saver capability. You can specify how many
minutes before the screen dims and how many idle minutes before drives spin
down. Your computer will be able to wake up with an incoming phone call,
receive a fax and go back to sleep. Perfect for using that old Mac sitting
in the closet as a stand alone fax!.

Key features:
- Auto Spin down/Screen Off
- Screen Saver & Energy Star Support
- Password protection
- Digital Clock sreen saver (bouncing!)
- Full async. sound playback of sound files of any size!!
- Sound recording capability (using your built-in Mac microphone)

Minimum system configuration of:
* Hardware: Any Macintosh or Power Macintosh (Plus and later).
* System: 7 and higher.
* 165K of free memory.

Focus comatose is $25 shareware.

Note: This update fixes some minor bugs and adds screen saver plug-in
capability. Users of any older version should upgrade to this version.

This software is shareware and can be distributed as such on with shareware
collections and CD's provided it is not changed in any way.

Subject: [*] Home Automation Software

Would you rather wake up to gentle background music from your stereo and
the smell of fresh brewed coffee? Ever wish your computer could turn on the
printer when you want to print a file and then turn it back off when it was
finished? Would you like your house to look lived in when you're away on
vacation? Ever wanted to just say "Stereo On" and have your stereo turn on?
Now you can do all of this and more from your Macintosh using AppleScript!

This shareware package provides a collection of scripting commands that let
you control appliances, lights, etc. from AppleScript using a very
inexpensive CP290 interface and X-10 modules that are available at many
electronics stores or via mail order.

If you're new to home automation or AppleScript, the detailed manual
provides lots of background information, examples, mail order companies for
the interface and modules, contacts for home automation magazines, etc. For
less than $60 and very little effort you can get started in home automation
- check it out!

Subject: [*] Let's Go Fishing

Yes my cyberfriends another great game by MagicHat Shareware !! The creator
of Haunted Mansion, FastGun, Lottery Buster, and the award winning Star
Guardian now brings to you another reason to keep you gleefully gazing at
your monitors for hours on end. If you are a fan of fishing. If you often
yearn for that tug on your line or to watch your bobber dive for the bottom
just before you yank hard and reel in your line gauging the weight or breed
of your catch by the feel of the pole, YOU'RE GONNA LOVE THIS GAME !!!
It's your day off. You put aside the everyday cares and woes and go to lake
Ernie. There you stop at Bill's baitshop and stock up. Then you pick your
spot, bait your hook, and cast in your hopes of a good catch. Keeping a
careful eye on your bobber, you wait. It moves just a little. A teasing
nibble, but you know it's just a matter of a few seconds before the water
breathing beast can stand it no more and decides this must be lunch. Your
bobber takes a nosedive towards your victim and you react.... Play the male
fisherman or the busty female fisherlady in her bikini.
Sell your catch at the local Fish Market or Resturant and use the money to
rent a boat, buy a Fishfinder, and of course more bait. Now you're ready
for the really big ones that feel safe out in the deeper waters. Compete
for high score based on total weight of fish caught in one day. Three save
options allow you and two others to save their game without over riding the
other two.
In the tradition of MagicHat Shareware this game also offers great graphics
and quality sounds. Don't pass this one by. You'll only wonder when you
hear your friends talking about the 12 pound catfish they got. Download it
now and tell your own 'Fish Story'. Shareware fee only $10.00
PowerMac friendly.

Subject: [*] MacPipes 2.2

MacPipes is a game similar to Pipe Dream for windoze (it's in fact the
Macintosh rendition of an ancient Amiga game called Pipeline).

Requirements
MacPipes requires MacOS 7.O.1 or later and a 256-colors capable monitor.
Sound Manager 3.0 or later is now also required.

What's new in MacPipes 2.2

- Added a background music during game play, courtesy of Wizid Audio
Productions.
- The sound volume is no longer controlled by the numeric keys 0..7.
Separate volume control for sound effects and music is now available:
choose "Sound Options..." from the Game menu. Sound Manager 3.0 or later is
required.
- The menu bar is now accessed by simply moving the cursor to the top of
the screen. The spacebar is no longer used for displaying the menu bar.
- Fixed a bug that caused freezes at higher levels (usually after level 37).
- Minor changes to the title screen and to the about dialog. - Updated the
documentation and the MacPipes FAQ file.

Distribution
MacPipes is US$5 shareware (bonuses are welcome ;-). You can distribute
MacPipes freely, provided that you leave the software and the accompanying
documentation unchanged.

I give permission for this program to be included on the Info-Mac CD-ROM.

Thanks and best regards.

Subject: [*] Mail Dock v1.0b10

Mail Dock is Freeware

Mail Dock keeps track of the contents of multiple Eudora Light folders.

Set up a Eudora Light settings folder for the user name that you want to
use. Make sure that Immediate Send and Send On Check are turned OFF and
Save Password is turned ON. It is also easier if the "Check mail every X
minutes" is set to 0.

Then rename the settings folder with the name you want displayed in Mail
Dock, you can place the folder any where on your hardisk.

Use the ADD button to add a new mail box to the Dock, use the standard file
dialog to select the folder that you set up in the step above.

Use delete to remove mail boxes from the Dock.

The Update button will tell you how many unread messages there are in the
selected mail box. Update All does the same for all the mail boxes in the
Dock.

Check logs in to you mail server to see if there is any new mail for that
mail box, Check all runs through all of the mail boxes.

Send and Send All will send any queued mail to your mail server.

Up and Down are used to select the mail boxes, this will be improved in
latter versions.

Distribution
Mail Dock may be freely distributed as long as the Software and this ReadMe
and they are not modified.

Mail Dock can be uploaded to BBS and Internet Archives where no charge is
made for downloads and may be included on magazine cover CD's.

System Requirements.

Subject: [*] PhoneFloater 1.1.1

Attached is PhoneFloater 1.1.1, the latest version of PhoneFloater from
MUSI Computer Products Inc. PhoneFloater 1.1.1 offers many improvements
over previous versions, including voice messaging, integrated phone books,
improved Speech Recognition support, improved call tracking, and improved
Drag & Drop features. And for all of our 68k users who have been waiting,
PhoneFloater 1.1.1 now supports operation on 68k AV machines.

PhoneFloater is a desktop speakerphone and voice messaging application for
use with a GeoPort Telecom Adapter equipped Macintosh. PhoneFloater
provides users with a simple but intelligent interface for placing and
receiving telephone calls through their Macintosh, with extensive support
for Macintosh Drag & Drop and the Speech Recognition Manager.

PhoneFloater 1.1.1 provides users with a small, effective telephone
solution for their GeoPort equipped Macintosh. Telephony support includes
the ability to place and receive calls with PhoneFloater, using your
Macintosh as a full-duplex speakerphone for the clearest possible telephone
connection, and a full featured voice messaging system with time and date
stamping.

A new addition to PhoneFloater 1.1.1 is the integrated Phone Book. With the
Phone Book, you can now speak the name of the party you wish to call using
Apple Speech Recognition 1.5 software, or drag and drop the name to the
Phone window to initiate a call.

All incoming and outgoing calls may be logged, giving you a complete record
of transactions for billing purposes, and previously logged numbers can be
redialed through the call log window.

In addition, PhoneFloater will keep track of the ten most recent numbers
dialed in a Speed Dial popup menu, giving you a quick and easy way of
placing calls to those important numbers.

Speech recognition in PhoneFloater allows you to place calls by talking to
your Macintosh, as well as perform normal functions like saving a file. By
using Speech Recognition 1.5 software, Power Macintosh users will have an
enhanced user experience when using PhoneFloater. Placing a call is as
simple as saying "555-1212 Dial" or "Phone MUSI Computer Products" to your
Macintosh when using the speech recognition option.

System Requirements

PhoneFloater 1.1.1 requires a Macintosh AV or Power Macintosh with a
GeoPort Telecom Adapter and the Apple Telecom Software with a minimum of 8
MB of RAM (only 768k application memory required). If installed,
PhoneFloater will use PowerTalk for placing calls with PowerTalk Business
Cards. PhoneFloater is accelerated for Power Macintosh.

System Requirements
Mac with 68020 or better
System 7 dependent

PictSort is a handy utility for automatically organizing a large number of
files such as collection of text digest, graphic, and sound files. When you
activate PictSort by dropping a folder onto it, PictSort searches it for
files that have prefixes in common with each other. PictSort then creates
new subfolders and moves the appropriate files into them.

PictSort can also filter out files containing specific strings in the
filename and move them into new subfolders. For example you can use
PictSort to automatically search a folder and move all files containing
".jpg" in their file names into a new subfolder.

This version has a new "Browse" function which allow users to quickly see
the previews of picture files. While in the browser mode, yhr user can move
each picture to pre-designated folders with a single key stroke.

PictSort is a fully functional shareware program. You are asked register by
paying the a $10 shareware fee or donating it to the American Red Cross.

Please e-mail me at [email protected] if you find the program useful. It's
the only way that I know people are using my program and that the time
spent writing it hasn't been wasted.

Subject: [*] Stereo 3D demo v2.01 -- program for creating stereograms

Stereo 3D is a program that allows the creation of random-dot stereograms,
as seen in many books including the Magic Eye=81 series. It is quick, fast,
and simple, and works on virtually any color Macintosh. Stereo 3D creates
3D images from a grayscale PICT, created in any paint or image-editing
program, and takes only seconds to finish an image on most Macs.

=46eatures and Requirements

* Accelerated for Power Macintosh!
* Runs on any Mac with a 68020 processor or Power Mac with 4 megabytes of
RAM, 8-bit color or greater, and System 7.
* Creates 3D images in full color or black and white.
* Up to 256 levels of depth.
* 3D image resolution can be set with the click of a button. Resolution
ranges from 72 dpi for screen display to 1200 x 1200 or greater for output
to high quality printers.
* 3D smoothing provides 256 levels of depth even at 72 dpi!

Subject: [*] Synth MooVier 2.0

Synth MooVier is a freeware application capable of producing 3-D QuickTime
animation.
Its notable features are:
- integrated 3-D modeler;
- high-quality rendering (Phong shading);
- complete control over material properties;
- multiple, colored light sources (point, directional or spot);
- export of 3-D models in VRML format (1.0 compliant);
- control of movie quality (fps) and frame dimensions;
- small RAM and disk footprint.
In order to produce an animation, you have to model the actors in the scene
(by assembling solid primitives) and to define their behaviors over time,
which means you can, in specified temporal interval, modify all their
attributes, as position, dimensions, colors, rendering type; the light
sources can be smoothly turned on or off; and the special actors (like the
view camera) can be managed in the same way.

Hardware/Software requirements
Macintosh model with 68020 processor or better (FPU not required);
8-bit/256 colors video card (16-bit/thousands recommended); 768 kb of free
RAM (1Mb recommended);
MacOS 6.0.7 or better (7.x recommended); QuickTime 1.5 or better.

Enjoy,
Marco

WarpSearch is a *fast* non-indexed TEXT and HTML search utility that

The Werewolf from Planet X-Files. OK, I agree the name is a little corny.
However, if you are familiar at all with the high quality of MagicHat's

United States. Best described as a werewolf he is moving across the country
turning the innocent populace into carnivorous canines !! You the hero are
a government agent assigned to do what numerous other agents before you
could not.....DESTROY the BEAST.
>From city to city you will travel by train. Gathering information from
your predecessors by finding messages at each F.B.I. office in each city.
Doing your best to evade the poor humans who have been changed to
werewolves themselves, you get ever closer to the alien werewolf.
BE CAREFUL ! Should you come in contact with those who have been changed
you may very well become a werewolf yourself. "For though a man be pure of
heart, and say his prayers by night -- He'll change to a wolf when the
wolfsbane blooms, should he suffer a werewolf's bite."
This game is as much fun as it is intense. Movement is via the keyboard.
Newcomers to MagicHat shareware take a chance that this isn't like any
hypercard game you've ever had on your hard drive. Download it now and I

Open the Memory Control Panel, and turn on 32-bit addressing. You may

NetPresenz (formerly FTPd) is a ftp-, www- and gopher-server. NetPresenz
uses the Apple's standard file sharing permissions so it is easy to
configure and very secure. NCSA Telnet offers a rudimentary ftp-server for
occasional use. You can also try MacHTTP for www.

Subject: Another SOS-APPL Horror Story

After reading the posts from people receiving bogus information
>From Apple's "Help Line", (like telling people to call MICROSOFT for
OpenDoc 1.1!!??), I'd like to share my experience in the hope that
Apple has SOMEONE actually familiar with their own hardware and
software who reads these posts. I have a Performa 6220 that was
found to have cache problems when I ran the 5XXX-6XXX test program.
I was instructed by the software to call 1-800-SOS-APPL. I ended
up talking to "Milton". He asked me how I got the number and told
me to call back only after I had run the test program. I assured
him that I had done just that and that I wanted my computer to be
repaired under the Repair Program. He asked me what problems I was
having with my computer. I informed him that I was experiencing
total lockups and had an unsettling green glob at the bottom left of
my monitor.
First he asked me how I KNEW if the computer was locking up. I
explained to him that the cursor was frozen and that the clock had
stopped updating. He said that it didn't necessarily mean that my
computer was locking up, and that if it was, it had to be from 3rd
party software. I assured him that I was only loading the standard
7.5 inits but he insisted that the problem was caused by renegade
software.
He then said that the green hue on the screen was due to having
my computer placed too close to a magnetic source. I explained to
him that it was on a table by itself with no magnetic force (even a
speaker) anywhere in the room. I explained to him that it was also
part of the recall program due to a bad ribbon cable on the
motherboard going to the monitor jack. He said that my problem was
not included in the recall, (according to the Apple press release,
it was), and that I should stay away from magnets and that the
problem would eventually go away.
I also brought up to him the fact that Open Transport 1.1 would
not load on my system from the 7.5.3 CD-ROM. (Later, Apple
acknowledged this and came up with an update that now loads on
Performas). He said that Apple was not responsible for 3rd party
software not loading. I thought at first that he didn't understand
what I had said. Surely, the Apple Help line folks knew about their
own SYSTEM software. But he insisted it was 3rd party software and
would not discuss it further.
Extremely agitated, I asked him how long it would take to have
my computer fixed. He said that they had the motherboards in stock
but had to wait till the CONTROL PANELS and EXTENSIONS were placed
on the boards!!!! I told him that they are software components from
the system software and he didn't believe me. He steadfastly
maintained that they were hardware components.
I have been a loyal Apple user since the IIe days. I have had
Macs since the Mac Plus up to today. I've never owned anything BUT
Macs. I know what information he gave was bogus and what's wasn't.
But after talking to "Milton", I can only wonder what he has told
the inexperienced user who will become so frustrated, they will
never buy another Apple product. He is not just uninformed about
his own job, but he's also dangerous. I can only imagine what he
has told other people to do.
Apple - if you are listening, PLEASE!!!! Replace these
incompetent bozos with real human beings. Maybe put someone in the
position who has actually USED an Apple product.
It has been a month since I talked to Milton. He assured me
that an Apple representative would contact me to schedule my
appointment. I guess I have no other choice but to call back and
hold on for the ride!
If anyone else has their own horror story, please e-mail me and
I will compile them as a package to send to Apple. Also, I'd like
to know who had a good experience so we can ask for those
technicians by name. (If you leave your name and number, they will
call you back.)

Subject: Color StyleWriter 2500 - a Nightmare?

Hi!
I use a Quadra 950, and I used System 7.5.3, OT 1.1, and lots of software,
and I printed on a LaserWriter borrowed from my work, and I was happy. But
I changed my job.

And I bought a Color StyleWriter 2500.

Now I feel sad. About every 2-3 days, my Mac crashes (bus error) during the
application that controls CSW2500 printing (Sorry, I don't know its english
name, I use a french version, it should translate something like "Printing
Services Manager"). Then I need to reinstall my system.

Come on, thought I, sure that brand new 7.5.3 is buggy, let's go back.
7.5: Ouch, same crashes. Well, let's return to that old trusty 7.1. Indeed,
crashes are less frequent. Now I can keep working a week without
reinstalling my System Folder. What an improvement!

Not speaking about Microsoft's Fine Artist and Creative Writer: the printed
output is garbled and incomplete, sometimes it includes what should appear
on the screen, not on the printer (for those who use those products: the
snake that runs at the bottom of the screen).

And I got lot of locks and crashes I hadn't before, using other software
that were perfectly running before.

I suspect the CSW2500 software to be the guilty one. It's the only thing
that changed!

Hence my question: do other CSW2500 users experience the same problems?
Does anybody found out a solution/workaround?

The fuse on the board has blown. If I replace it, it instantly blows again

A professional repair will cost me a leg and two arms, so I am looking for

Does any one have any suggestions? Anyone have a circuit diagram?

Does anyone have a second Classic, or just the analogue board, they would

Subject: GIF JPEG file tuner wanted

I have noted that a number of sites ( San Francisco Chronicle
www.sfgate.com ) have set up their .JPG images so that a grayscale image is
displayed first and then the color detail is added later while the page is
being updated. This allows the viewer of the page to determine whether they
want to wait for the color detail.

I believe the Chronicle images are manipulated in Photoshop (or some other
tool) to do this. Is is possible to set this up automatically? I want to
drag a JPG to an applet and have it generate a grayscale image of the
original image. The applet is to then write a file in which the grayscale
image is displayed first and then followed by the original color image.

Similarly I want to drag a GIF to the same applet and have it generate a 40
level grayscale image of the original image and compress the color table to
216 colors (Netscape Windows( & Mac?) default color table). The applet is
to then write a file so that the grayscale image is displayed first. It
would be like an interlaced GIF image, with the first interlace being the
complete grayscale image and then the subsequent interlaces are color.

And for icing on the cake it would be great to have it optionally generate
a thumbnail of a specific size irrespective of the size of the original.
Whether the thumbnail is created and the thumbnail's size could be set in
the applet's preferences. (THUMBNAILER)

And for ice cream on the top I would like it to write the image
characteristics into the clipboard exactly like GIFSCAN does so that I can
paste it, if necessary. This option to be set in the applet preferences. It
should also generate a line for the thumbnail if one is created. Samples
below.

I bet this applet does not exist - any volunteers to write it, or an Apple
script to tie the apps together?

Thanks.

The older Macs had hard restart & interrupt switches (do we remember that
bit of plastic sitting in the bottom of the box, Yes!;-), but these
functions are achieved from the keyboard now-a-days. Restart is
Command-Control-Startupkey, and Interrupt is Command-Startupkey. I've
noticed on my own powerbook that in certain crash situations the "external"
keyboard is disabled, and one must use the powerbook's own keyboard to
utilize MacsBug.

Now Utilities gives complete user-assignable keyboard control, including a
macro module. Version 6.5 is out just now and should be pretty good I
think. The Now stuff is all from the same shop, and while their components
can cause problems with other 3rd party extensions - what doesn't these
days! - my own experience of the RAMDoubler/CPU 2.0.5/Quickeys route tells
me that you'd see a lot less of MacsBug with Now! I hardly ever crash, and
I'm constantly testing stuff on this 540c.
(Usual disclaimers here!)

QuickDraw GX != Desktop Printing.

Desktop Printing is one of the features that is installed along with
QuickDraw GX, but it is not the total of what QuickDraw GX offers.

QuickDraw GX is a completely new imaging model for the Macintosh that
offers vastly improved type capabilities [including context-sensitive
ligatures; ie.e if you type "waffle", that "fl" pair will become a
ligature on screen and when printed, however, it remains an "fl" pair for
purposes of spell checking and finding] and vastly improved graphic
capabilities. The Macintosh's printing architecture is completely
changed.

The price for this new capability is that your current print drivers will
break, your software will need to be upgraded to take advantage of the
new features, and your currently-installed fonts will all be irreversibly
translated into GX TrueTypes. The sales tax on that price is that
QuickDrawGX takes up a bunch of disk space.

So, if you are planning to use software that requires GX, and you have
GX-savvy drivers for your output devices, then go ahead and install it.

If you have software and/or hardware installed that depends on GX NOT
being present, then do not install it. Most likely, the "MCC FaxPrint"
software referenced above falls into this category. For myself, I have
an Apple Color Printer, which is the only Apple-labelled printer for
which Apple does not provide a GX driver, so I can't install it, either.

extension off (Cyberdog places an extension in your system) and so it
doesn't work. Try disabling RAM Doubler. If you need the extra RAM turn
Virtual Memory on from the Memory Control Panel. I've found this
combination to work well with OD/CD 1.0 and now with OD/CD 1.1b (RAM
Doubler seems to keep causing problems in the new version too).
Hope this helps...

Yes.

No. Well, the Mac probably won't explode if you do this, but at best the
Mac will see them both as 4Mb.

Hard to say without knowing what "regular Syquest drive" means.

EZ135: 3.5" disks, 135Mb apiece, fairly fast, inexpensive.
This drive will probably be discontinued soon in favor of the EZFlyer
230Mb model, which of course uses a different cartridge.

First, restart with only 7.5.3 extensions + TFI with Magic Menu turned
on. I expect that the problem will go away.

Now add the other four you list above one at a time, rebooting and
checking for the porlbme with each addition. I think you'll find that
the problem will appear when you add Directory Assistance II. I have no
direct knowledge that this is the case, but I think it's a good guess
given my experience with DAII.

DAII is evil. It must be destroyed. I believe that Symantec no longer
ships it as part of Norton Utilities; I can't imagine that it's
compatible with 7.5.3. Frankly, I'm surprised you're not having more
problems. Get yourself a copy of Default Folder from the info-mac
archives. On my mechine, TFI and DF work together quite happily under
7.5.3.

Subject: UUENODE attachments for mail to PC users - how?

I often have to exchange documents with PC users, and they send and receive
attachments UUENCODEd. I am using Eudora 1.5.4 and I handle the receive
end by saving the mail message (save all together in one file if Eudora had
to segment them) and then run UnUU (available in InfoMac archive). But how
do I send UUENCODEd attachments? Does Eudora Pro 3.0 handle this? (I
recently got Eudora Pro but haven't had the time to load it.) Are there
shareware ways to do this?

TIA,

One note of caution, though. If you intend to use WebArranger's URL
validator agent, be sure *NOT* to be behind a firewall. WebArranger agent
does not support proxies and it does not piggyback on Netscape to go
through firewalls, either. The reason CE gave was that there are too many
proxy protocols to support. That makes Netscape quite impressive as it does
not have any problems with at least two (but probably more) different proxy
servers that I use.

This is a "feature" of the ROMs in your keyboard. When the machine sits
idle for some period of time, the keyboard itself "types" the offending
string. The only fix is to replace your keyboard.

You probably have (or had) a DataComp keyboard. If I remember right, a
designer there drank a little too much Jolt or something, :) and programmed
some of the keyboards to type those words every now and then. You should be
able to call the keyboard manufacturer and get a replacement.

>Recently I discoverd the offending string in another document.

It may have simply been overlooked when it was typed originally, and you
just now noticed it.

>I have run disinfectant 3.6 on both my HD and the floppy with no results.

I don't think it's a virus, so Disinfectant won't find it. HTH!

Yes, it was sampled from a Nikon F3HP with waist-level viewfinder. :)

Seriously, I imagine it was sampled from a real camera. That'd be a
whole heck of a lot easier than attempting to create the sound from
scratch.

There's a mirror flap in there along with a shutter, so it's an SLR, but
the mirror flap isn't low-pitched or sustained enough for it to be a
large-format SLR [like a Hasselblad or Mamiya]. I would guess it's a
35mm SLR of some sort. I don't think anyone would be able to ascertain
the make and model based on that sound. Maybe a long-time photo retail
guy, but I doubt it.

>Also, where in the System file does this resource appear? It doesn't
>show up under the default beep sounds. TIA!

It is 'snd ' resource #-16504. 'snd ' resources with negative IDs don't
show up as beep sounds. If you open the System file, duplicate that
resource, and give it a positive ID and a name, it will then show up as a
beep.

Mike Blackwell
asked What brand of camera is the screendump "click" based on?

I haven't a clue what kind of camera they used, but I'm led to believe that
the sound is buried in the System's resource fork. I was looking into some
system sound problems and found two negative ID sounds when I searched with
ResEdit. I was told that one of these is probably the camera click...it
made sense to me at the time. Like the desktop A and B files I think they
are invisible to prevent mere mortals such as ourselves from accidentally
trashing them. (someone must be mighty proud of that camera...)
