Subject: [*] Amtrak schedules--version 6.2

Complete Amtrak train schedules effective July 1996, provided as a public
service by volunteers from the Delaware Valley Association of Railroad
Passengers and the members of the railroad newsgroups. These schedules
have been checked carefully, but are unofficial and subject to change
without notice. For official information, see www.amtrak.com, but the
official site does not have schedules yet.

Changes in ver. 6.2: added new Gulf Coast Limited service (New Orleans-Mobile)
minor typographical and HTML errors fixed, Sunset Limited corrected.

Unpacks into a folder compatible with all web browsers or text viewers--no
net connection necessary. (c) 1996 DVARP. Current version may be
distributed freely; all previous versions should be deleted. OK for CD.

You can also link to the most current schedules at:

The latest version of DragSelectRect (1.1). Replaces 1.0 and 1.0.1.

DragSelectRect is an XFCN which enables you to drag a gray or "marching
ants" selection rectangle within the card window of your stack, returning
the local or global coordinates of that rectangle.

Subject: [*] Drop Formatter 1.2

Drop Formatter is a desktop drag & drop application.
Place an alias of it on your desktop and you may drag
TEXT files onto it. From these text files, Drop
Formatter will generate formatted HTML files and text
files.

One of the annoying things about publishing on the Web
is most of the process is repetitive and
breath-takingly dull. It seems nearly all of my pages
use the same layout. Certainly all of my text is
formatted in much the same way for each page. Why can't
I then, write what I want in a text editor, say BBEdit,
and have a program format the text so it looks good?
I don't want to give up the ability to custom
format text, like "italicising" or *bold-facing*, but I
want the computer to do most of the grunt work for me.
After all, isn't that what computers are good at?
Repetitive, boring jobs. I thought so...

Bugs Fixed:

*Bus Error with unterminated tags.
*Preferences alignment between 68K and PPC.
*Improper handling of newlines from other platforms
(UNIX & DOS).

Brian,

I believe what you're looking for is either "Fast Eddie" or " Planet Color".
Fast Eddie is shareware or freeware and serves to reduce the size of the
file without any loss of "picture integrity". Planet Color does the same
thing, but is the commercial version. I believe that they are both sold by
MisroFrontier (800-388-8109). (Of course, no connection with the company).
I think that they technically remove file information that is not used by
the image (things such as color info that does not exist in the scanned
image).

I have been using Planet Color for 2-3 years and love it! I scan my
pictures at a high resolution, and run them through Planet Color, and get
back a file that looks just like the original, but is (I think) at least
half the size of the original file. It must have a tiff or pict file to
work with if I remember correctly.

Hope this helps. If you need more detailed info, or have questions about this,
feel free to write to me.

I neither am a regular Photoshop user. Your question is best answered in
the May 1996 issue of Macworld, in Steve Roth's article "A Guide to Getting
Great Line Art". I am in no way affiliated with Macworld, just a happy
reader.

In summary, while using Photoshop:
1) Scan the images in at the scanners highest resolution (300 ppi sufficient)
2) In Photoshop's Image Size dialog box, upsample to twice the resolution,
with the Constrain File Size check box off.
3) Use sharpening filters. Author Steve Roth recommends two passes of
Unsharp Mask, with Amount=500%, Threshold=5, Radius=(resolution/1200) (with
600 ppi image radius = 0.5). FIlter, and filter again with cmd-F.
4) Use the Threshold dialog box (cmd-T, also in the menu to the left of
filters). This step is key. Slide the slider until satisfied, keeping in
mind that you're zoomed in. Read the article stated prev. (esp. the
sidebar "Manipulating Gray Scale into Line Art")
5)Now that you have an image that is primarily black and white, conert it
to a smaller file by using Photoshop's Mode menu, select the 50% Threshold
in the Bitmap dialog box)

You should also know that there is a similarly good article on color
images, GIF and JPEG, by Jim Heid, on pg. 129 of May 1996 (same issue)
titled "Optimizing Web and CD-ROM Graphics".

Subject: Apple 17-inch Multiple Scan Monitor

Every time I fire up my Mac I get irritated about the way the monitor
screen looks.

I have a Apple 17-inch Multiple Scan monitor running with a 7500/100.
Shortly after purchase I complained to the dealer that I could not expand
the picture horizontally to fill the active screen area at the normal
832X624 resolution for a 17-inch monitor (vertical expansion was no
problem). When I switched to 1024X768 resolution I _could_ expand the
picture to full screen. The dealer checked it out and said he could not
help - there was no adjustment possible.

I called Apple Customer Support about the problem. They promptly sent me a
replacement monitor which turned out to be no better than the original
monitor.

I'm still using the monitor but I feel that something is not right. I think
I should be able to see the "full" active video area at the 832X624
resolution. The diagonal measurement advertised is 16.1-inch (the Users
Guide states 16.5-inch). The best I have is 15.5-inch.

I have never seen another Apple 17-inch Multiple Scan monitor in operation
so I have no basis for comparison.Does anyone have any experience with this
monitor that could help me out or provide any info? Thanks,

Subject: Help - Abaton scanner no longer works under 7.5.3

Subject line says it all. Basically the Abaton software used to run my
Abaton Scan 300/Color has gone haywire since I went to System 7.5.3. It
locks, it quits, stalls - very flaky. It runs fine under System 7.1, but
unfortunately my new Power Mac won't do 7.1., even within a partition. I
assume it's not a SCSI problem, since SCSI Probe sees the scanner OK.

Has anyone seen an updated copy of Abaton's software, or perphaps a
third-party scanner interface that might work? Any other ideas before
this thing becomes a very large paperweight?

Been looking at new releases of both Netscape Navigator since before

You've done a public service. Don't worry about bandwidth... :-)

I've an IBM internal and a bunch of Syquests and Zips and they're all
formatted with FWB's Hard Disk Toolkit 1.8s. I had various errors with 1.7
when I went to 7.5.3, but now across 25-30 volumes never a problem, assynch
working nicely (as reported by HDT). And version 2 of HDT is out, though
I'm waiting for 2.1...

I was using Silverlining extensively before, but it's getting slow...

There are two uncorrected bugs in HDT, across 1.6-1.8s: you can't dismount
one partition on a drive without the others ejecting (greying out).
Annoying but one can put up with it. And removeables won't check with Disk
First Aid, since again DFA can't seem correctly to dismount when
checking/repairing a volume. This is probably two faces of the same bug (a
"dismount" bug). FWB are no doubt bending Apple's rules somewhere here.

Usual disclaimer where FWB are concerned. What a nice response from
Aladdin...

The full version of 1.8s has fixed this one.

Subject: StyleWriter II printing utility

Dear Mac fellows,

Is there any utility that can let me print odd/even pages on my
StyleWriter II? Or just let me to print on both sides of a paper? I'm
going to print out a 200 pages manual and it would be a waste to just
print on one side of a paper. Thanks in advance.

PS.Please reply me directly.

Subject: Web page graphics (Q)

Could anyone help me out? I'm looking for a program that will take out
all the white space (make them transparent) in GIFs and JPEGs for use on
my web page. I saw a program that did this a while ago, but I can't
remember the name.

Thanks in advance

Microsloth victims of the world, unite...
Can anybody suggest a cure for the following ailment:
cleaning my preferences folder I removed some Excel prefs or the Microsoft
Help prefs and when starting the Help from Excel I get : Microsoft help has
run out of memory and cannot continue. Launching the help directly from
outside Excel works fine though... I'm using a 7500 w/ RamDbler and Excel
has plenty of memory - could this be a consequence of having also Excel 5
in a corner of my HD ? They don't share folders - the Excel 4 help is in
the System/Extensions/Microsoft/Help folder while the Excel 5 help is
inside the Microsoft Office folder. Au secours !!! TIA, --alex
