Subject: [*] CommuniGate FileGate 1.1

The FileGate is a CommuniGate communication module that transfers messages
to and from plain text files.

Applications can use the FileGate to send messages: if an application
composes a message as a plain text file and places that file in the
FileGate OutBox folder, the FileGate reads it and submits the message
to the system in the same way as if that messages was read from the
Internet.

Applications can use the FileGate to receive messages: if a message is
addressed/routed to FileGate, the part of the address is
used as a name of a folder or a text file inside the FaxGate InBoxes
folder. If a folder is found, the FileGate stores the message in that
folder as a plain text file. If a text file is found, the FileGate
appends the message (converted to the plain text format) to the file.
So, each application can have its own InBox and it can receive messages
either by scanning the folder and reading the text files found, or by
reading the mailbox text file.

The FileGate allows to use the CommuniGate Server with some mailers
that can exchange messages via the file system. For example, you can
use Eudora in the "uucp" mode on machines connected to the File Server
that also runs the CommuniGate Server. It is especially useful if you
use PPP on the CommuniGate Server: since the current version of MacOS
does not allow to use TCP/IP via Ethernet if you use PPP, computers
on your Ethernet network cannot access the Server via the regular
SMTP and POP protocols.

Revision History
1.1
* The From line (in the uucp routing format) is added to the messages stored.
* Storing messages in text file mailboxes is implemented.
* Processing of the From lines in the incoming messages (in the OutBox)
is implemented.

Subject: [*] CommuniGate UUCPGate 1.9

The UUCPGate is a CommuniGate communication module supporting e-mail
message transfer using the uucp protocol and regular modem
connections; uucp communications do not require a direct Internet
connection (i.e. they do not use the TCP/IP protocol).

The UUCPGate module supports multi-line communications and it can
support connections with several other uucp systems (so your
CommuniGate system can be a network provider for other uucp e-mail
systems).

The UUCPGate module can work together with the SMTPGate module
providing both TCP/IP and UUCP Internet e-mail. The CommuniGate Router
takes care of directing messages to the proper gate.

Revision History
1.9
* The special symbols (\n, \r, \t) can be used in the outgoing login strings.
* The "This Host cannot use MIME" option is supported.
* More information is included into the Received By header field.
* More Server service functions are used.

1.8.2
* The Return-Path (From ) header composing algorithm is corrected.

Subject: [*] EPStoPICT 1.2.1

EPStoPICT is a Macintosh application from Art Age Software, the makers of the
award-winning application epsConverter. EPStoPICT can read any portable EPS
or PostScript file and convert it into a Macintosh PICT file, suitable for
editing with a Macintosh drawing application, or for viewing with any
application that supports standard PICT files.

EPStoPICT parses the actual PostScript code in the EPS file and translates it
into PICT data. Although this process takes longer than simply extracting a
PICT preview from the EPS file, there are several advantages to this
approach:

(1) Some EPS files do not have a PICT preview.
(2) Often the PICT preview is not an accurate representation of the EPS
file's true contents. It may be poorly rendered, or black and white only, for
example.
(3) When present, PICT previews are usually stored as low-resolution bitmaps.
This essentially prevents them from being scaled or edited.

EPStoPICT produces a vector PICT representation of the PostScript data, which
allows for better scaling (zooming in and out), and even a limited degree of
editing with several popular drawing applications.

EPStoPICT requires a Macintosh computer with a 68020 or later processor
(including PowerPC) running System 7.0 or later. EPStoPICT supports Balloon
Help and drag and drop operation from the Finder. Once registered, EPStoPICT
is accelerated for Power Macintosh computers.

To install EPStoPICT, simply double-click the EPStoPICT Installer icon, and
follow the on-screen instructions.

Pricing and registration details can be found in the package.

New in Version 1.2.1:

* EPStoPICT 1.2 was inadvertantly shipped with the beta expiration date still
activated. Version 1.2.1 corrects this oversight.

Subject: [*] FilmMagic Pro Demo 1.03 [Fat] - Slide Imaging Utility (RIP)

FilmMagic Pro is a Macintosh and Power Macintosh native imaging
solution for AGFA, Management Graphics (MGI), and Lasergraphics Film
Recorders. FilmMagic Pro is a Queue-based product that images
PostScript, EPS, PICT, and Scrapbook file formats to Digital Film
Recorders at work station speeds.

FilmMagic Pro has been designed to take the guess work out of imaging
PostScript files. The software can automatically determine the best
centering, scaling, and orientation of all files. Prior to FilmMagic,
users were required to know how each PostScript file was formatted in
order to make appropriate adjustments in their imaging software. But
now with FilmMagic Pro's user friendly interface they can just add the
files to the imaging queue, press the start button and walk away.

An informative WYSIWYG Preview feature allows files to be inspected
before they are imaged to film. When FilmMagic Pro generates a
preview, the file is actually RIP'd by either the PostScript or
QuickDraw interpreter. This ensures that the preview will show
exactly what will image onto film when the file is processed for final
output.

For more information on FilmMagic Pro, please contact your favorite
imaging solutions provider or link to the InkWell Software Web page at

Subject: [*] Pandora's Box v1.1: Universal Game Cheat

What's new for version 1.1?

Bug fixes. We've changed the shareware fee to $10.

What is Pandora's Box?

Pandora's Box is a professional game enhancement utility that runs
natively on both 680X0 and PowerPC Macintoshes. Pandora's Box does not
require the installation of extensions or control panels.

Pandora's Box lets you:

(1) Locate and change game values (i.e. ammunition, health, lives, money,
and other numerical values).
(2) Find unknown game values (i.e. values that are displayed graphically
instead of numerically, such as status bars, gauges, and indicators).
(3) Modify game values while you play.
(4) Freeze game values (i.e. automatically update and restore values that
you have modified).
(5) Save game values as macros that can be used when you play again.
(6) Pause games that don't have a pause mode.
(7) Switch out of games that hide or disable the menu bar.
(8) Reach higher levels.
(9) Attain new high-scores.
(10) Renew the playability of games you've finished, or finish those you
haven't.
(11) Perform feats previously only attempted by hackers and tech-heads! :)

Subject: [*] The Mail Processor

General Description
The Mail Processor is a fat binary which loads Eudora, Pine or MH
mailboxes and converts them into a custom database with features
designed to make it easy to find information on a specific topic and
gather the abstracted information together in a compact and useful
form. The Mail Processor can also be used to process mailboxes and
output a tab delimited text file which can easily be imported into
database programs such as FileMaker Pro. A sample Eudora mailbox file
is included along with instructions on how to give it a test run. This
program is great for turning accumulated listserve messages into a
gold mine of information on whatever the listserve list topic is.

Subject: [*] Unicorn Editor 1.0.3 release

Welcome to Unicorn Editor, my styled text editor capable of editing
Chinese, Japanese and Korean based on the WASTE text engine. It is a
small, easy to use program which fill the gap between SimpleText and a
full featured word processor. For oriental people, it fills a void for a
stand alone styled text editor for double byte language with built-in font
and input method support. Unicorn Editor v1.0 is a ShareWare ($10). If you
like the program, please support shareware concept by paying the
registration fee.

This WorldScript compatible style text editor for both 68K and PPC
Macintosh is back engineered based on the features of the popular Tex-Edit
Plus. Because both Tex-Edit Plus and Unicorn Editor use WASTE text engine,
one should find that the two programs share a lot of similarities in the
text editing features. While this program is not exactly the Tex-Edit Plus
yet, especially in sound and picture handling, the text handling is
further enhanced with various oriental language code set translation,
input method support and custom bitmap fonts support. The program was
writen in C and compiled with CodeWarrior 8.

With Unicorn Editor you can
Create, edit and print styled multilingual text in Chinese, Japanese,
Korean and of course, any Roman languages, such as English.
Convert language code set by importing and exporting text file to be
loaded to internet.
Set up an external Chinese, Korean, Japanese viewer and editor for
internet browser.
Quickly create, edit and print styled text documents of any size
(limited by RAM).
View and print TeachText or SimpleText read-only (ReadMe) documents.
Embed picture and sound in your file for breath-taking presentation.
Drag and Drop any text, picture, sound object around or to other drag
and drop compatible application.

Subject: [*] URL Manager Pro 1.2v4

URL MANAGER PRO ADDS CUSTOM BOOKMARK MENUS TO NETSCAPE NAVIGATOR'S
MENUBAR.

URL Manager Pro, the latest release of my powerful yet intuitive bookmark
management program is released. URL Manager uses the familiar
Macintosh Finder metaphor to manage bookmarks (URLs). Bookmarks are
organized in folders with smooth Drag and Drop.

URL Manager Pro now adds menus to Netscape Navigator to allow users to
more effectively collect, organize, and go to bookmarks. An unlimited
number of new bookmark menus can be added to Navigator's menubar and new
bookmarks can be quickly added to each menu.

A folder in URL Manager Pro is easily added to Netscape Navigator as a
custom bookmark menu. These bookmark menus are truly hierarchical and
correspond to the nested folders in the URL Manager document. New
bookmarks are quickly added to the menus (and the corresponding URL
Manager folder) with the Add Bookmark command.

Additionally, URL Manager Pro adds a menu with an icon to the Netscape
Navigator menubar. This menu can be used to add bookmarks to the
currently open URL Manager document.

URL Manager Pro can be downloaded from:

URL Manager Pro is shareware and costs $25.

Subject: [*] YA-Base64 version 1.2.2

Yet Another Base64 Decoder version 1.2.2 is a simple droplet designed to
decode MIME Base64 encoded as well as uuencoded files that are dropped upon
it. It assumes that all segments of the original MIME or uuencoded document
have been concatenated into the file being decoded, and that the segments
are in order. It will optionally attempt to recursively decode files until
no further Base64 decoding or uudecoding is possible.

This is intended primarily as a helper application for Yet Another
NewsWatcher, for which it is the recommended Base64 decoder AND uudecoder
helper application. It is not a general purpose MIME document decoder.
However, it does handle most usenet Base64 and uuencoded binaries fairly
well, and it can deal with multiple attached files.

It requires, but does not test for, System 7 or later.

Version 1.2.2 fixes some memory, error, and event handling problems.

Hi there,

really appreciate it if you'd point me in the right direction.

This morning at around 1AM EST, I sent DiskTracker 1.0.3 to the mac-gifts

possible, could you pull the file from your archive? I have already
submitted a new version which does not have the problem.

Thank you very much,

Subject: GeoPort & Plaintalk (Q)

Dear Digest Readers,
Several years ago I saw somebody with a Centris 660AV talking to their
computer, saying things like:

"Computer Open Control Panels"
"Computer Open such and such file"
etc...
Was that Plaintalk?

I noticed that I can buy a plaintalk microphone from MacWareHouse for
$30. Given that there is plaintalk software that comes with System
7.5.3, will I have the same capabilities as the Centris 660AV on my
PowerMac 7200 if I buy this microphone?

Do I need any additional hardware or software to get voice recognition
of all the words I speak? If it matters, I already have 40MB of RAM.

On a different note, I hear that if you have a microphone, Netphone will
allow people to use the internet in place of long distance phone calls.
Will the plaintalk microphone mentioned before do this?
Will the Netphone software for the Mac interact with somebody at the
other end who has a PC with Netphone? In other words my friend has a
PC connected to the Net, I have a Mac, will we be able to use a
microphone on each machine to talk to each other?
What kind of microphone do they need to interact with a Plaintalk
microphone on the other end?

What software hardware requirements do you recommend?

Also, has anyone use the GeoPort telecom adaptor together with a
Practical Peripherals Modem? Does how many minutes of recording space
does its answering machine capability provide for outgoing and incomming
messages? How much disk space corresponds to the message time?

Please e-mail your reply directly to me.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Subject: Mac Reliability

I'll admit that I have been (and continue to be critical) of Apple's
Quality Control on some of their recent products. However, when it comes
to some of their computers, I have to admit that there is impressive and
there is Apple.

I just returned from a business trip to Los Angeles. While in LA, I made
the mistake of stepping on the power supply cord connecting my PowerBook
170 to the wall. The PowerBook came flying off the table, bounced off my
foot (ouch) and hit the floor. I picked it up and turned it back on. The
hard drive which was dead quiet before was making loud bearing noises. The
smell of something burning was coming from the floppy drive (motherboard
probably.)

I had a tight deadline on a workbook I am writing, so I thought I was
really cooked (along with the PowerBook.) I had no car in LA and no way to
get the PowerBook to an Apple dealer. So having no choice, I continued to
work on the machine. I soon discovered that if I ran the PowerBook on
battery instead of plugging it in, the burning odor would go away. Despite
its awful groaning sounds, the hard drive continued to work.

I was able to use the machine for four days in Los Angeles and used it
continuously on my flight back home (almost five hours.) It was enough
time to finish my project and meet the deadline. Now that I'm home, I'll
back up the hard drive and send the trusty 170 in for repair.

I know it might be that I was just lucky. Still, hats off to Apple for a
job well done on the PowerBook 170.

I am trying to help a client configure a single Eudora program (probably a

on the same server. What she wants to know is can she do this without
having to re-enter a new password/username, etc. Somehow I don't think she
can.
Then, if she has to run two separate Eudora programs, with
independent settings and preferences, will she run into any
conflicts? Can she simply rename the settings files, make aliases,
and launch the applications from the apple menu (or whatever)? Is
this the easiest way around this problem. She will be grateful for
