Hi.

I was wondering if anyone had the Spanish Compatibility Checker.
I looked in Apple's ftp sites, but apparently they don't keep things
that old.

For that matter, does anyone have any Spanish HC stacks from Apple?

Thanks!

Subject: [Q] distributors' software?

Friends:

My aunt is a medical distributor. Her clients are high-maintenance, low
volume buyers. They may need one widget on Thursday, three gizmos on
Friday, and two liters of doodads on Monday morning at ten o'clock. Each
order must arrive at exactly the right time, in precisely the right
quantity. To achieve these timely deliveries, each order must be
requisitioned from the manufacturer(s) in an equally timely manner. She
has always used an extremely organized manual system of double-entry
bookkeeping to handle the accounts of around 500 clients. She does it all
on paper, literally with a pencil and three-ring-binders of account
ledgers, just the way she has for the last thirty years.

This manual system has worked so well that her 500 clients soon became 600,
then 700, an on, and on. But the strain is beginning to show on the
system. She stays at the office each evening nowadays just to make all the
books reconcile and to push the paperwork for the next day. However, there
is nothing wrong with the accounting system at a fundamental level.

She has decided that she would like a computer to speed all this
bookkeeping up, but she has no inclination to change the system
fundamentally, nor does she want to put all the information into a computer
database in lieu of paper. A data-loss crash would be a much bigger
headache than just staying with the pencil-and-paper system. In other
words, she wants a system that will print out order forms (on plain paper)
all day long with ease, and then kick out a comprehensive daily ledger page
(on paper) at 5:00, so she can go home. She will just keep a new
three-ring binder of these daily ledger pages, resulting in a new version
of the old system.

The consultants to whom she has directed inquiries on this matter have all
come back with outlandishly-priced custom software packages on Win95
machines. I don't think she needs this, since the paperwork side of the
business is pretty straightforward. Regarding the platform, we all know
that Macs are just plain easier to learn , which should make her life
less complicated from the start. However, I don't know anything about the
software options.

Does anyone know of a good software package designed to dispatch orders in
this manner and to generate a global ledger page on a daily basis? Price
is not as big an issue as ease of use. I suppose these tasks could be
accomplished in MS Excel, but I would hope to find a software package
specifically designed just for this type of time-sensitive distribution.
Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Subject: [Q]GeoPort Telecom Adapter's software

I'm looking for GeoPort software.

I have a PowerMac 6100AV that was upgraded from a Centris 660AV. At that
time, I bought GeoPort telecom adapter for Centris 660AV and this was also
upgraded after PowerMac had launched.

I haven't been using Telecom adapter since I got a faster modem but now I
got a Quadra 840AV from my friend and want to use back Telocom adapter for
this, but the software is already for _ONLY_ PowerMac so that I cannot
install onto Quadra.

I also tried using AppleTelecom 2.3.3 to install onto Quadra but it
requires previous disk for NON PowerMac that I don't have.

Can I get a GeoPort software alone for NON PowerMac? I've asked some shops
but they don't, as I expected.

Subject: Chem Draw

Hello !

One of my friends has a Macintosh LC II 8/80 and he often uses a chemistry prog
ram, ChemDraw Plus 3.0. The problem is that when he makes a copy of a drawing,
this drawing is "compressed" in the clipboard, and some characters disappear. W
hen he pastes his drawing into MS Word 5.1 and he tries to print it on various
printers (StyleWriter, Personal LaserWriter) he has the same problem : some cha
ractes have disappeard. But when he prints it from ChemDraw, there isn't any pr
oblem. The Mac LCII runs under System 7.1, and he has the problem for the first
time one week ago, but now every drawing is "broken" when he prints it.

Send ALL you suggestions to me please, every e-mail will be answered!

Thank you very much,

Subject: Data fork into the resource Fork?

Hi,

Anyone know of any utility that puts the datafork into the resourcefork?

The reason that I want to do this is because I sometimes makes FTP-sessions
to a SunServer. This machines act as the fileserver for the LAN (so that
you can mount your account). The problem arises as I want to retrieve a
file that contains a resource fork, such as applications. Only the datafork
is stored where the file is, while the resources are stored in the
.resource directory. If I FTP from the .resuorce directory, Fetch puts it
all in in the datafork and all you got is an unusable file...

Of course, I should stuff the files that I have on the account so the
problem never occcurs, but what happens is that I'm working by my Mac at
home and for some reason I need that particular file *now*. By the laws of
Murphy, this files must contain a resource fork...

For instance, right now one of my fonts has disappeared (that's another
question, why do fonts sometimes just vanish?) and I have a working copy on
my user account. Since fonts (TT) are res-only, a zero length file is where
the suitcase normally appears when I'm working directly to the fileserver.
So I change to the .resource directory and download the thing. All the 208
kb of resources ends up as a simple data-file. Aaargh!

I've got Forker installed on my machine and as I open the file with
ResEdit, the '' resource appears, I open it and I can easily recognize
a resource map there... It's so frustrating :-/

Chances are that this problem has happened to quite a few people before,
thats why we have MacBinary, right? But what I'm looking for is simple
utility that takes the datafork from one file and makes a new resource file
out of it. Something that reverts the damage alredy done.

Any clues or other suggestion?

TIA,

Subject: Geoport rumours

Thank you for all the answers regarding my question on the Geoport upgrade
for the Quadras. Unfortunately they didnt give a clear answer. Heres some
of them.

Michael Schabert - "Apple's 28.8 version won't be ready for awhile and
that'll be ONLY for PowerMacs." (According to the June 96 edition of the
Mac Home)

Roy Pardi - "28.8 Geo upgrade will be PPC only. Apparently this is a 'known
thing"

Dr. Horst Simon - "There was recently a report in MacWeek, which stated
that the new software would be available by July."

Ryan - "Apple has indeed left the telephony consortium. It looks as though
they will release a 28.8 upgrade sometime this summer and then discontinue
it. I read it yesterday."

Roland Whitehead - "Tidbits reported that the 28.8 version was in the pipe
lione and would be delivered this summer."

I also attended some of the mac-newsgroups, and they are obviously as
confused as I - though a couple messages seemed promising. One claimed,
that Apple only dropped out of the Versit-company but didnt drop the
Geoport architecthure.

"Apple will be releasing new software and a new GeoPod this summer to go to
28.8. The new software will work with the old GeoPods, but will not get
all the way to 28.8. Probably 24.4. They have plans on the books to get
to 33.6 early next year," he wrote.

Another guy wrote this on the 22. may (96) : "With specific regards to the
Telecom adapter, Apple will have to produce 28.8 by September due to the
fact that Bandai will be shipping Telecom adapter add-ons to the @world
when it ships and they say the modem will be 28.8. BTW, this info (the
@world part) came direct from Bandai at E3 last week."

So well just have to wait and see, won`t we.

Well, until Apple take up your suggestions ;-) you can always use the Pruning
Page:

It lists nearly every Apple extension/control panel, what it does, its RAM
consumption (for many), and other info. It also contains info on many
third-party inits.

I am in the process of writing a stand-alone document, to be released as
shareware, that contains all of this info, as well.

If you're using BBEdit or EasyView, they have their own command-click URL
interpreter, and it may very well not work as expected. Copy the URL to a
convenient temporary location (Sticky, temporary word processing or
SimpleText document, etc.) and THEN command-click it.

Hope this helps. Let me know. Cheers,

I have a 7100/80AV and I am running 7.5.3. Its running fine!

I hade some problems when I first installed it until I did a CLEAN 7.5
install and then installed the 7.5.2 update. When I was done I just moved
over my extensions and junk by hand.

A good way to keep your old system folder temporarily (if you have the
hard drive space that is.) just put the System file in the trash (not the
folder but the file itself) then rename the system folder something
different. 7.5 will make a new folder you can then move things over by
hand. Its also a good time to check for current versions of your
extensions. It really makes a difference!

Good Luck.

Subject: Internet Connection Problems

Dear Sirs/Madams,

I hope I am not imposing asking for help like this, I read somewhere
you guys where both knowledgable and helpful.

I am having problems setting up the Internet connection on my new
computer. I am already connected on the old one so know the right
configuration info.

I have a PowerBook 5300ce with system 7.5 upgrade 2.0, and a Global
Village PowerPort PC Card modem version 2.5.7 (Platinum). I am trying
to use Open Transport version 1.1 and MacPPP version 2.1.4 to connect
to Internet.

I tried to use MacTCP instead of Open Transport, but the MacTCP file
keeps vanishing when I put it into the extensions folder- so cant be
configured or used. Strange - perhaps it conflicts with the latest
system upgrade.

I havent used Open Transport before, but configuration of the TCP/IP
seems straightforward.I think MacPPP is configured correctly (I
already use another computer to connect to my Server). However when I
try to connect using MacPPP it cannot locate the modem and says
timeout before it can connect. I am using the following AT
initialization string as recommended by Global Villages.
AT&F1W1S95=44SO=1.

I use the modem for faxing and have no problems. Do you have any
suggestions? Thankyou.

You may be able to clear up the problem by booting off a diskette (perhaps
your Apple Disk Tools diskette) or an external drive while holding down the
PRAM-reset key combination option-command-P-R (you almost have to be a
digital contortionist). It worked for my SE/30 after it gave me the chimes
of death from installing (then removing) some new faulty memory .

Unfortunately, the computer must at least begin the boot process before it
can recognize the keyboard combination, so if you can't boot, then you
can't reset the PRAM this way. If all else fails, open 'er up and remove
the PRAM battery for about a minute, then replace it--with a fresh one,
while you're at it, if it's been in there more than a couple of years.

Be VERY careful not to touch anything near the CRT, which can develop
incredibly high voltages that could knock you across the room.

By the way, don't believe Norton Disk Doctor when it says it can't fix the
problem. Run it at least 3 times, and if it still doesn't work, then run
Disk First Aid (while booted from a diskette or external) and/or MacTools
Pro. Keep running them in sequence until all 3 declare "No problems
found". I've encountered similar dire warnings from Norton, but have never
failed to fix the problems without reformatting.

Hope this helps. Cheers!

Subject: SIMM/DIMM trees for PPC 6100

I need a small bit of help. I have a 6100 with two 4 MB SIMMs installed to
bring it up to 16 MB. Is there a SIMM tree available that would allow me to
put the two 4MB SIMMs together and perhaps add another 8 or 16 MB SIMM.
Another possibility would be something that would let me put the two 4 MB
modules in the IIfx at the house. With 16 MB SIMMs down to $169, I am ready
to tuck 32 MB in the 6100, but hate to waste the (formerly) $400 of memory
inside.

Subject: type 1 error w Adobe Illustrator 5.5?

=46olks,

I have a friends who attempts to run Adobe Illustrator 5.5 on a Performa
475 with 12MB RAM + RD. Every time he attempts to open it, he gets a splsh
screen saying the fonts are loading, then it disappears and an error box
appears saying "Unexpected error type 1..." or something to that effect.

I know error 1 means "bus error" but what can be done? Is something on the
machine/system corrupt?

Yes, I *have* increased memory (up to 12MB), disabled RD, zapped the PRAM,
rebuilt the desktop, ran Norton DD -- all to no avail.

BTW Photoshop runs OK on the same machine.

Thanks.

Cheers
