Subject: [!] New unsub directions
Hi,
Hey -- is this unsub message understandable? I'm trying to upgrade our old
one (several years out of date) and see if I can't make it a bit less painful.
Suggestions? Could you get off the list using this message?
Cheers,
Gordon (info-mac moderator)
P.S. I expect there will be a wave of unsubs now that I've sent this around!
=====+++++=====
I'm beta testing this new unsub mail message. At the end is the old one.
-Gordon (info-mac moderator)
So, you want to leave info-mac, eh? This message covers:
- What listserv am I attached to?
- How do I get off that listserv?
- What if my email address has changed?
- Who do I contact for more help?
You are getting this mail message because you send a "unsub" or "signoff" or
similar command to the [email protected] or
[email protected] addresses.
Unfortunately, we can not unsubscribe you directly. Why!? Well, to
understand, I need to explain how we distribute info-mac. This will help
you unsub, don't worry.
First, we don't send the digest directly to *anyone*. The reasons are old, but
basically boil down to not having enough cpu cycles to do the job (over 9000
people are getting the digest). Instead, we distribute the digest to 200
mail exploders and listervs around the world. From there, the digest is sent
to your mailbox.
In order to stop receiving the info-mac digest you need to get yourself off
the listserv or mail exploder's email list, not ours.
to figure out who you are connected to. The key is in the headers to the
info-mac digest. Look for the "Received:" lines. Look for the machine you
subscribed to.
If you see nothing familiar, then cut/past the email header and send it to
[email protected] with a request to figure out what
listserv you are attached to. We'll do our best to figure out where you are
getting the email from.
Once you know where you are getting the email to, it is usually just a matter
of sending an "unsubscribe info-mac (global" command to the listserv address.
For example. The most popular listserv for info-mac (contains over 8000 of
our folks) is located at ricevm1.rice.edu. If you find that string in your
digest header, then create an email addressed to [email protected]
with "unsubscribe info-mac (global" in the body -- the subject can be
anything.
One of the biggest problems we have getting users off the list is when
an internet provider changes the user's address. The listserv knows who
you are by looking at your address, so the new address won't work for an
unsubscribe command! You can do nothing short of contacting the person
who runs the listserv site. So, do this: create an email addressed to the
listserv with "info info-mac" in the body of the message. If you are attached
to the listserv at ricevm1.rice.edu, you would send it to
[email protected], for example. Back will come a bunch of info about
info-mac... one will be a human email address of the person who runs the
list. Send the request to them to get you off.
Finally, there are always the folks (like me) at
[email protected] who are here to help you get off the list.
If you send me a "unsub info-mac" mail message, you will get this form letter
back. If you need more help send something like "Hey, I read your unsub
form letter, but I'm confused, because..." and then I'll send you back a
human reply instead.
Good luck, and welcome to the underbelly of the internet!
Cheers,
The info-mac moderators
====
Here is the old unsub:
Info-Mac is distributed by local sites to reduce the load on our mail delivery
system. You must contact the local site to change your address or unsubscribe.
Presumably, you did this to start your subscription.
Although certain individuals do receive the digest directly from us,
this is very rare. Such people usually subscribed many years ago or set
up a redistribution site with their account name as the address. We no
longer allow either situation.
If you do not remember how you subscribed, examine the mail headers on a
digest as it is sent to you. The redistribution site should appear on
one of the Received: lines.

Subject: [*] Birthdays and Such 1.0: daily alerts
Birthdays and Such is a tiny application meant to be launched on daily
startup, to remind you of the important birthdays and anniversaries in your
life. (It's only 17K, plus a sample Reminders text file and a manual.) It
works for me, which has made me the envy of all my friends and relatives.
By setting reminders 10 or so days ahead, I find I'm as on the ball as the
best of the rest of my friends and relatives in remembering to buy cards
and presents (and to actually send them)--and way ahead of the
date-impaired.
Birthdays and Such runs on almost every Macintosh computer that's been made
since 1986 -- Mac Plus through the latest PowerMacs. It requires only
System Software version 6, but takes advantage of System 7 features when
available.
The steps to use Birthdays and Such are simple: You type important dates
into a text file (just modify the sample Reminders file that's part of the
package). And you set Birthdays and Such to run every time you start your
Macintosh. (Simple instructions are in the manual)
Birthdays and Such is What'sItWorthWare--that is, you decide what Birthdays
and Such is worth. (If you use it, it's worth _something_.)
Enjoy!

Help and check it out!
Fonts Manager(tm) 2.0 is functionally similar to the System 7.5.x
Extensions Manager. It allows the importing, viewing, enabling, and
disabling of font suitcases in 'Sets' and supports Balloon help.
Unlike other utilities, such as Suitcase(tm) and Master Juggler(tm),
it works on ALL Macs with System 7.1 or later, including 7.5.3,
without interfering with the NORMAL operation of your computer. Have
over 700 testimonials from customers with PCI-based PowerMacs running
System 7.5.2 that have switched to Fonts Manager to get their

older Macs, who just can't stand to use Suitcase any longer, and have
instead switched to Fonts Manager.

I assume you are using MacX 1.2. It has a logic error in it that was
exposed by the PCI version of system 7.5. Fortunately there is a fix for
it, which you can apply if you are competent with ResEdit.
As always, us this at your own risk. It works fine for me (7500/100).
Attached is the hack to be applied to MacX 1.2 to make it work on the new

Subject: A curious mind
Hello all Info-Mac readers. I recently opened up the back of my
Performa 550 to take a look inside. I wanted to at least know what it
looked like before we bought more memory (I was a little curious too).
I noticed, at the top left, a black box. I figured this was the IBM hard
drive our Mac came with. (doesn't Apple make any parts?? A Motorola
processor, an IBM HD, a Sony monitor...) Anyway, across from that was
an empty slot about the same size as where the HD was. Is this for
another internal HD? Is this possible? If anyone knows, could you
please help me put my curious mind at ease? Thanks a lot.

I need to restart a Mac unattended at the same time every night.
There are several volumes mounted on this IIcx (8/40 running system 7.1)
which acts as a Telefinder BBS. When one of the volumes "unexpectedly
quits" it locks up the computer and Telefinder will not answer incoming
calls. Restarting the computer allows Telefinder to reload and the crashed
volume to remount.
Is there a piece of share/freeware that will restart a Mac a predetermined

I agree with Philippe about NDA. I am still using it succesfully with 7.5.2

How about this: use GraphicConverter to batch-create Previews for an entire
folder of images, then look at them in the Finder. The names and
32x32-pixel icons will be readily visible, and you can
copy/delete/rename/whatever them right then and there.

I dunno about shareware, but ForeFront Group sells a program called=
WebWhacker that does this. You can d/l a demo copy from their web site. =
The demo is limited to 1 month or 10 "whacks", whichever comes first. The=
demo version also inserts "downloaded by WebWhacker demo" messages at the=
top & bottom of each web page it downloads--somewhat annoying, but it does=
provide incentive for you to pay for the program.
I've been trying out the demo myself. My main complaint is that it doesn't=
bother to maintain the same directory structure, it just puts all the files=
from the downloaded web site into one folder, renaming files as necessary. =
Other than that it looks pretty good. It modifies all links in the=
downloaded files so that they point to the downloaded copies instead of the=
original web site; links to other pages that you haven't downloaded are=
left alone. If you have your web browser open, it can grab whatever the=
current page is that you're looking at and use that as a starting point.
Sorry, I can't find the URL for their web site, but it shouldn't be too hard=
to find via web search. You can also buy the program from MacZone for $40.

Hello all,
My company has recently purchased an Imagewriter II printer to hold

has a database on it with which we will be taking orders and then
printing them. We are supposed to go online with this next week,

The extra ingredient in this stew is that on the top right of this
form is a 4x4 label which we peel off later. The label is on top of
the third layer, not a part of it, so it really is a fourth layer,
but only on that small section of the form. We are pretty sure this
label is causing the problems. If anyone out there has any ideas on
how to make the IW II work with thse forms, or has a better printer
for us to try, please let us know. We are really scrambling for
ideas at this point.
Thank you all for any help you can give.

Subject: Liability Insurance for Mac Clubs
The National Capital Macintosh Club (Ottawa, Canada), is somewhat in a
dilemma with reference to liability insurance. We carry this insurance in
the event something catastrophic occurs at our general meeting which is
usually held at a local high school or community centre. Our general meeting
can draw up to 200 people out of a membership of 600. We also hold a number
of Special Interest Meeting with small crowds.
We currently pay $750. Canadian for this insurance. We received notification
this week from our underwriter that this rate will be raised to a minimum of
$5000 for the coming year. This has the potential to disband our Club--my
theory is that either Microsoft or IBM have secretly bought all major
underwriters around the world and this is their final attempt to kill Apple
at its grass roots (joke). We have never made a claim on this insurance.
My questions (my apologies for asking so many) to other info-mac readers who
belong to other Mac Clubs (especially in Canada):
Does your Club carry liability insurance?
If so, do our rates reflect current market value?
If not, how are you getting around the liability dilemma (signing a waiver
form doesn t work)?
Are you aware of any Insurance Companies who specialize in Not for Profit
clubs at discount rates.
Does your Club have a Charter (or is it incorporated); in the event of a
claim, can your elected officials (President, Treasurer), be sued or does
the Club take the hit?
Does Apple (oh please read this Guy), provide any guidance for Mac Club on
this issue.
As these question is somewhat specific, please return comment to my e-mail
address. I will gladly forward a summary of all answers received to anybody
who is interested or if I m overwhelmed, post back to info-mac.

Hello,
We are looking for a Macintosh solution that will allow us to run a

In the U.S. and Canada, you can order it from Apple/Claris. For a limited
time they are giving it away free -- not even any shipping charges! -- but
it may be a couple of weeks before they ship it. In the U.S., phone

The latest issue of MacUser on the newsstands includes the 7.5.3 upgrade

If neither of these is satisfactory, TidBits #323 described several ways to
get the update. You can find that issue on info-mac, probably in /per/tb.

Subject: Ugly Desktop Icon Award: FWB CD-ROM Toolkit
When I finally decided there was enough legitimate purpose underlying
the hype about CD-ROM drives, I bought a cheap slow one (MacWarehouse's
'PowerUser' 2x) which came with FWB's CD-ROM toolkit as its driver soft-
ware.
The FWB software is quite nice and entirely adequate for my purposes,
but it gives inserted CD-ROMs the ugliest icons ever to appear on my
desktop. Icon is black-and-white with no pretense at any shading or
shadowing, and looks like a frisbee with a hole in the middle with a
hammer and a wrench crossed, in an x, through the hole.
Naturally, I can't paste custom icons onto CD-ROMS.
I opened a copy of the driver (it's a Control Panel) with ResEdit and
found that none of the ic18 or ic14 resources specifically resemble the
one given to the CD-ROMs themselves; instead, they show the icon that
is shown on-screen during the parade of icons at startup-time--a color
blue image of a square box (apparently a CD-ROM player) against
a light blue background with a grey CD and a hammer hovering overhead
in the position of an old-fashioned phonograph arm. In other words,
not merely a color version of the b&w icon I get on the desktop when I
insert a CD-ROM, but a different image entirely. I also checked in
the ICN# resources (where b&w icons are kept) and there's no exact
match for the ugly icon there, either. So much for easy editing from
within ResEdit.
Any easy and relatively obvious way to hack the desktop icon so I'd
have a little less ugly in my life?

Yep, the SIMMs sold for PC clones will work just as well in your Mac. The only
difference is that PC SIMMs are 9 bits wide instead of 8; the extra bit is used
