Congratulations Ian!
The Classic should run just about anything the Plus or SE runs. My Church
has a Classic with 4 meg of ram and a 40 meg HD. We use Excel 3.0. Word
4.0, ClarisWorks 2.0, and PageMaker 4.0. We also have a Personal
LaserWriter LS(?) and it does a good job, VERY slow when printing but it
works. Hope this helps.

Subject: "Foreign Languages" on Info-Mac
In the past few weeks there has been a minor thread in this list about how
to handle (or *whether* to handle) posts written in so-called foreign
languages. Thought I'd pass along an overview of a recent article in The
New York Times (April 14, Week In Review section) that discusses this very
subject. It's entitled "World, Wide, Web: 3 English Words."
To save bandwidth, I'll give a few quotes; those with more interest can
look up the original article.
"'It is just incredible when I hear people talking about how open the Web
is,' said Anotoly Voronov, the director of Glasnet, Russia's best-known
Internet provider. 'It is the ultimate act of intellectual colonialism. The
product comes from America so we either must adapt to English or stop using
it...this just makes the world into new sorts of haves and have nots.'"
"There are of course plenty of Web pages in Russian, Japanese, French,
German and Chinese...but for now if you want to take full advantage of the
Internet there is only one real way to do it: learn English, which has more
than ever become America's greatest and most effective export (carrying
with it immense cultural power)."
"As Glasnet's Mr. Voronov puts it: 'It is far easier for a Russian language
speaker with a computer to download the works of Dostoyevsky translated
into English to read than it is for him to get the original in his own
language.'"
"As the Web grows the number of people on it who speak French, say, or
Russian will become more varied and that variety will be expressed on the
Web. That is why it is a fundamentally democratic technology. But it won't
necessarily happen soon."
Info-Mac is probably not the place to continue this thread. We all come
here, fundamentally, for software and support. I just thought others--from
around the world-- might enjoy considering these thought-provoking comments
in-between extension conflicts and Type-11 errors. Presuming, of course,
that you can read English

Try Default Folder by Jon Gotow, its shareware and runs fine with system
7.53 on my 5300c. It allows you set default folders for each application,
to get info on a file and change its type, creator ect, to delete files,
and best of all it boomerangs faster than SuperBoomerang oh and it seems to

that one cant change by what the files are viewed by

Soundapp produces .wav files from system 7 sounds just dandy. My guess is
that it is hidden on info-mac somewhere. Try the hyper-archive:
http://hyperarchive.lcs.mit.edu/HyperArchive.html
I have not the faintest idea of any software that could do this on a PC.

Hi all
I was very happily using MacX on my 8100/80 for quite some time, until I
finally got to upgrade to an 8500/132. Unfortunatly every time I try to
use MacX on my 8500 the system bombs.
I have not seen any updaters out there on the net, nor seen any articles
commenting on wether or not MacX is supposed to work on PCI based Macs.
Has anyone else had any experience with MacX working or not working on
say 8500 Machines?
Thanks for any help you can provide..

Hi Jim,
I have been having the same problem on a MAC Color Classic running system
7.1 with some 7.5 upgrades added such as the scriptable finder etc. My
problem occurs when I format a disk for DOS then try to format it for MAC
use at a later time. The machine tries to format it, spits it out saying
that disk verification failed. There seems to be no way then to use this
disk. It will not format in any other machine either.
The reason I mention this to you, is that you can recover the disk by using
a bulk tape eraser to magnetize the disk. It will then format properley
when you put it into the MAC. This type of eraser is available at any Radio
Shack store and is used to erase video and audio tapes. You place the tape
or disk against the unit and run it around in a circular motion on both
sides of the magnetic medium. I know this does not solve your problem, but
it least you can reuse the disk.

I've used a Utility of the Month from Ziff-Davis called SoundSmith. It will
convert between different sound formats at different sampling rates and bit
depth. I'm not sure if they have it on their website, or if you have access
to one of their archives. I pulled it off of eWorld a long time ago. I'd
upload it except they have specifically said that the software is not for
redistribution; also, it is on my home computer, not this one.

Hello Mac users,
Trying to recover data on a hard disk of a Power Mac, I put the disk
in a Performa. Trying to start I get an error message (The startup
disk will not work on this Mac....etc).
How can I make a bootable disk from System 7.5.
I do have the Disk Tools disk that came with the Power Mac but this
seems to be corrupt. (When I tried to duplicate the disk there seemed
to be an error with the Minimal Power PC Enabler file)
Following the instructions in "The Macintosh Bible" page 295, it says
that I should make a copy of the System file (and other files). BUT
the System File alone is 2,350 K.
Can please someone tell me how to proceed???
Thank you very much.

Dear Info-Mac,
As a recent questioner put it "I have lurked long enough, is there anyone

So here goes..
I have a 7100/80 Mac (v7.5.1) and Personal Laserwriter 320. I also have 3
pc's connected via a 10Base2 network for Novell (v4.1). The MAC is
connected to the network via the built in Ethernet connector but as yet is
not a client off Novell - a future question, perhaps, as will be UNIX

beforehand I would appreciate it!
But, my main question is: is it possible for the pc's to print to the
LW320, either directly via ethernet or via Novell, whilst retaining full
compatibility with the MAC?
I have LaserWriter Bridge Software from Apple but this doesn't appear to do
what I thought it would -do I need a piece of hardware to convert LocalTalk
to Ethernet, and if so, will the MAC automatically recognise it?
Many thanks in advance. I will keep you all informed of any solutions I

1. In typographical terms the reversed circumflex diacritical is
better known as a caron. On the other hand, I'm not aware that the
Czech language does have a t-caron character.
2. These characters are not available in the standard Mac character
set (Mac-Roman), which contains only characters necessary for most
Western European languages, but they are available in the Mac CE
(Central Europe) character set. Standard Mac fonts (Helvetica,
Times, etc) contain the Mac-Roman character set, but Apple has a set
of CE fonts (Helvetica CE, Times CE, etc.) which are distributed
with localized Czech, Estonian, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian,
Polish, and Slovak versions of the MacOS.
If your friend's Performa runs under a localized Czech MacOS then it
should already have the necessary resources, and all he needs is to
use the Keycaps desk accessory to find out how to type those
characters.
If it runs under a US version of the MacOS he needs to install the
CE fonts. Those fonts can be obtained by downloading from Apple's
anonymous ftp site the Fonts disk image from the localized Czech or
Polish versions of MacOS 7.0.1. Once those fonts (or any other fonts
conforming to the Mac CE character set) are installed, the
characters you mentioned can be typed as shown in the following table:

These characters are not built into the Mac Character set.
BUT...
I done this using MSWord's equation feature. As I recall, I used the
overstrike command to position the hacek over whatever letter I wanted. I
created a glossary item that contained all the necessary equation commands
but not the letter itself. To get a "c" with a hacek, for instance, I would
then insert the glossary entry, type a "c" and then whatever character is
needed to end the equation... I think it's a ")" or "}".
Hope this helps.

Just my two cents; I know this piece of software is known to cause a lot of
conflicts, but must admit it has been extremely robust on the different
Macs I own (OS 7.0.1 /->/ 7.1.1). You need to play a little with
extensions/cdev ordering, but that's about it. To my taste, it is probably
one of the most precious and valuable piece of software I own right now
(chose not to install SuperBoomerang from the Now Utilities, and don't
regret it). People who do possess NDA 2.x should toy a little with it, load
it before/after other cdev/ext, etc. I honestly believe it's worth the
effort.
Regards,
PLV [96/04/24;13:31:05 EDT]
Nota: I wouldn't be surprised at all NDA could work fine under 7.5.x, but
cannot testify. And BTW, once loaded, the OS I use range from 4-6 MB in RAM
size, so that gives an idea on how many cdevs/ext coast along NDA...

Greetings all,
I have a bunch of LC 580's & some Performa 5200CD's here, a disconcerting
number of which are showing the same problem. Occasionally, a mouse click
won't be recognised. You can wave the cursor around no problem & point to
whatever you like, but you can't CLICK on anything. A reboot fixes it.
It's happening to so many, intermittently of course, that I am thinking it
must be something that some of you may have seen & fixed. Here's hoping
anyway.
Cheers, Grae.

There is a very active list called Apple-Internet-Providers which discusses
the issues of providing internet services using Apple products. In short, you
can now provide every internet service, including usenet news and DNS with
the Mac OS.
Hope this helps.

Subject: OT/Appletalk/HP Deskwriter
Perhaps somebody can help us with this.
We have a Powerbook 145 (system 7.5) networked to a HP Deskwriter 540
networked to a Performa 636 (system 7.5.3). The Performa has the (latest)
HP 6.0.3 printer driver. The Powerbook has the slightly older 6.0 driver.
When the Performa is swtiched to Open Transport, the default for Appletalk
is inactive (opposite what it should be). We can go to the chooser,
activate Appletalk, select the printer and print happily, but after a
reboot Appletalk is inactive again.
When we switch the Performa back to Classic, the default selection for
Appletalk is what it should be, active, and the network works perfectly,
filesharing is OK, and both computers can access the printer. Something
seems to be turning Appletalk off in Open Transport, but what?
SOS Apple suggested checking the network termination and reinstalling the
printer drivers, which we did. HP customer service said this was the first
they'd heard of this problem and would pass it along to tech.
I would appreciate suggestions (the obvious one would be simply to use
Classic, but that would be way too simple).

Subject: Q: Linking between workbooks in Excel5
Hello all,
In Excel 5.0 it is possible to choose a folder in which you can put
workbooks to be opened automatically at start-up. Either somewhere in
your Preferences folder, or in an alternative one. I have such a
workbook with definitions of physical constants, and put it in the
alternative folder because I don't want to put workbooks somewhere in
the System:Preferences Folder. This works fine: when I start Excel, the
workbook opens.
However, what does not work fine is the following.
In other ordinary workbooks, when converting quantities in one unit to
another unit, I use links to the workbook mentioned above. On saving,
closing, and reopening of the ordinary workbooks Excel cannot find the
workbook anymore to which the links should lead. Updating the links via
the File/Links menu does not help: Excel always looks somewhere in the
Preferences Folder.
Does anyone know how to get around this, without cluttering my
Preferences Folder? (I prefer to have files that I make, on a place
which I can remember)
BTW, is there some discussion list on Excel, like there is for Word?
Thanks in advance,
Roger

Eric,
I had problems with my Performa 640CD DOS Compatible machine after I did
the 7.5.3 upgrade.
I was no longer able to read DOS-format CDs on the PC side. Apple tech
support were very
helpful for me - they suggested that I move ALL CD extensions that were
installed with the
update (Apple CD-ROM, Foreign File Access, ISO 9660 File Access, High
Sierra File Access,
etc.) to a temporary folder (Note: You can't use Extension Manager - you
have to drag the
files from the Extensions folder in the System Folder to a temporary
folder). Then from your
original installer CD, drag the old CD-related files to the Extensions
folder. Reboot and
see if that helps - it did for me!

Subject: Updates
Updates are normally welcome and improve anomalies. However here is a case
where old is better.( this gives hope to us older timers )
1. After updating to system 7.5.3 my copy doubler 2.0.4 would not work. I
was given the ftp address of Symantec by a member of this list and also a
copy of the 2.0.6 update. I anxiously put it in my ctl pannels folder,
restarted and voila !! nothing !!.
Out of sheer desparation I dug out an old copy ( thank goodness I keep old
junk ) of version 2.0.3 and yup, you guessed it, it works.
2. From the same site I uploaded the SAM 4.0.7 to 4.0.8 updater. Silly me,
I went right ahead and updated SAM. It took a few days to realize that
Stuff it delux 4.0 was acting kinda funny i.e. if you stuffed a filled
folder, no problem. But if you tried to stuff an image file ( not in folder
) stuff it would make a stuffed file of the FINDER and put it in the system
folder.
I isolated the problem quite quickly by using the start up manager and yup
it was SAM 4.0.8.
I reloaded the old SAM and I have peace once again in the household.
This may not be the case for PPC users ( I have a Centris 650 ) but be
careful when you update these two puppies.

Hi!
Over the years, I have given many used softwares and a MacInker (to reink
ImageWriter ribbons) and I was wondering how I could get a USED copy of Excel
4.
0 with the original disks. I know this is not perfectly legal since someone
having this soft have upgraded to Excel 5. I need Excel 4 to work with Word 5.1
since they are compatible. I do not want the stuff for free. I am a registered
ser of Word 5.1 and Excel 3.0. Now the offer from Microsoft is to pay the full
upgrade for Excel 5.0 which I do not need. Also I do not want to upgrade to
Word
6.0 before going PowerPc. So I am in between a change of machine and Excel 4
would be appreciated. Could I post a message to info-mac asking directly or
perhaps I could just post a message asking indirectly for a site where I could
buy the used soft. Thanks Louis Bergeron

I benefit from (and have registered) Glidel and CopyPaste.
I also bought a used 80-meg disk, and an external case for the old 20;
before that I made a lot of use of Autodoubler/Copydoubler (now
SuperDoubler), and I still have quite a few files compressed.
I also like, and registered, VirtualDisk -- it's a disk indexer, that
keeps track of the contents of any floppy you use, so when you do a
Find, if nothing shows up on your hard drive, you'll see anything by
that name that you have had on a floppy (indexed by number).

I am currently cosidering a Ram expansion, and would like to know if Wintel

70 ns SIMMs, and as many Wintel vendors sell SIMMs with these specs, I

ae really a lot cheaper than their Mac counterparts in my neck of the

if you only need the names of the files, you can just highlight whatever
you want in the hare drive window and do command-C (copy). then open any
