Subject: [*] A Find Alternative 1.3

Please note that the Find Alternative was formerly known as Stefan's Find
Alternative. Now in version 1.3, the Find Alternative has been made much
easier to install through the use of self-running patches.

What is the Find Alternative?

A Find Alternative is a shareware utility designed to help users of System
7.5 (and higher) choose which utility they want to use in place of the System
7.5 Find File. Currently, the Find Alternative supports users of Norton Fast
Find, File Buddy, Find Pro III, and UltraFind. If there is a utility you use
for file searching and you'd like the Find Alternative to support it, please
contact me at one of the the adresses below.

How does the Find Alternative work?

The Find Alternative consists of several patches, which are programs that
modify or update other existing software. These patches modify your system
software (the Find File Extension, namely) so the utility of your choice is
launched when choosing "Find..." from the Finder's File menu, or when you
type a Command + F.

If permitted, the Find Alternative will also modify your Finder, so that the
File menu's "Find..." command is replaced by the name of your preffered
utility. For example, if you use the shareware program File Buddy, then your
"Find..." command will be replaced with "File Buddy...".

The modification of your Finder is purely a cosmetic enhancement, so you may
want to skip this option if the thought of modifying your Finder makes you
uneasy.

Complete instuctions are given on how to install the Find Alternative.

What you really want to know about the Find Alternative:

The Find Alternative is $5 shareware.

If you want to give the Find Alternative to a friend or upload it to a BBS,
then please include this Read Me with it. If you are authoring a book or
CD-ROM and would like to include this software on it, please contact me in
advance.

Thank you, and enjoy your Find Alternative!

Subject: [*] Extensions Manager 2.0.1->2.0.3 Patch

A patch for Ricardo Batista's Extensions Manager 2.0.1
This is a new version of the patch, which fixes a problem in the
previous version with folder names in System 7.5.3.

NOTE: This patch is for Extensions Manager 2.0.1, not for Extensions
Manager 3.0.3, which is the version supported by Apple with MacOS 7.5.3!
There are significant differences between Extensions Manager 2.x (which
was freeware and not supported by Apple) and Extensions Manager 3.x
(which is part of the MacOS and thus supported by Apple).

Why Patch It?
When Apple bundled Extensions Manager 3 with System 7.5 it changed the
way it worked. In version 2 you could add/subtract extension sets
to/from the currently enabled set; in version 3 enabling one set will
disable the previous set. This makes creating or updating extension sets
a real bore. (Typical of Apple -- but that's another story!).

There're lots of fancier extensions managers out there, but I like the
way EM works: it's small, simple and efficient. If you don't use the EM
Extension it will use RAM only when needed, it creates no potential
source of conflict, and it's free.

What Does It Do?
This application patches Extensions Manager version 2.0.1 by applying
the following modifications:

--It adds the ability to recognize the new folders introduced in System
7.5.
--It adds a few extra filetype codes so that it will recognize fonts and
some other files.
--It changes the EM panel slightly, so that the buttons are closer
together and the scrolling list is longer.
--It changes the version number from 2.0.1 to 2.0.3, to avoid confusions.

The application will create a patched copy of Extensions Manager and
will name it "Extensions Manager 2.0.3". It will not patch the original
file. The patch changes only editable resources; the code is not touched
in any way.

This patch was created with Michael Hecht's ResCompare 2.6 (thanks for an
excellent tool, Michael!).

Subject: [*] Finder 7.5.x Extended Name Views Patches

These are several different patches for Finder 7.5.x that extend the space
allotted for file names in various non-icon Views. They should work on any
Finder from 7.5.1 to 7.5.5 (the latest with the System 2.0 Update for
System 7.5.3). Check your version of the Finder before applying these
patches.

Instructions
Use this patch on the copy of the Finder. Hide your old Finder and Finder
Preferences in another folder (save them temporarily in case you don't like
the results of the patch).

Put the updated Finder in the System folder and restart (make sure it is
still named "Finder"). Use the Views Control Panel to reset your
preferences and to see the changes. (The extended names won't show up until
the Views panel is used at least once.)See the included Instructions &
Examples file for just that.

For your own good, you really should read the included file "Instructions &
Examples," so you can see what the results will look like ahead of time.

DISCLAIMER: YOU USE THESE PATCHES AT YOUR OWN RISK.

These patches are free, but not for commercial distribution. You use them
at your own risk. All of these patches were done with Michael Hecht's
excellent ResCompare program. Please send any bug reports or comments to me

Subject: [*] Hybrid Filename Checker 1.0

MacOS Version (only)

Revision 1.0

What does this utility do?
To share files across multiple computer platforms, files must conform to the
lowest common denominator of file naming conventions, namely ISO9660. This
utility lists all files in a selected folder (and sub folders) that do not
conform to ISO9660, DOS '8.3' / Windows* 3.1 or Windows95* naming
conventions. Folder names, lowercase characters and invalid DOS extensions
can also be checked for.

This utility is particularly useful in the production of hybrid (cross
platform) CD-ROMs where all shared files names must conform to ISO9660.

LProgressIndicator:
Abstract base class. Intended to be used to abstract the actual concrete

this class in your libraries allows you to change the visual representation
of progress in your applications, without changing library code. Supports
infinite- and finite-length tasks. Does not require PowerPlant.

LThermometerPane:
Finder-like progress bar LPane and LProgressIndicator subclass. Uses the
user's window tinge colors, as specified in the Color control panel. For
infinite-length tasks, displays a "barber-pole" pattern in those colors.
Requires PowerPlant.

LAnimateCursor:
Animated cursor subclass of LProgressIndicator. Doesn't yet support color
cursors.

A sample PowerPlant app is provided, based on one of the Threads
sample apps.

* Fixed a bug in the demo app - Metrowerks' fault! ha!
* The minimum value is now actually used! Whoo-ya!
* LThermometerPane doesn't bother to recalculate the right
side of the fillrect when the task length is indeterminate
(eg there's no sense in recalculating something never used)
* LProgressIndicator::SetCurrentValue() now thresholds to
the min and max values. (eg You can't overflow the end
of the progress bar anymore).
* Added some debugging code in obvious places.

Subject: ConfigPPP Problem

I'm stumped...

System: Power Mac 8500 w/ 32MB RAM and System 7.5

When connecting to my local ISP using MacTCP, the ConfigPPP Control
Panel interface never switches from "OPEN" to "HARD CLOSE;" therefore,
I am unable to "HARD CLOSE" or "SOFT CLOSE" my connection.

However, when performing the exact same procedure with identical
versions of the software on a IIci / 5 MB / Sys 7 only, the Control
Panel interface works as advertised.

I'm new to my Power Mac, so am I missing something?

Will Sys 7.5 Update 2.0 (7.5.3) correct this apparent incompatibility?

(I have removed the DNR and PREF files and reinstalled from scratch,
but to no avail. In addition, other Power Mac owners have experienced
similar problems.)

Any help will be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks-

Tom Spatig

Subject: Ethernet and a Printer

Hey folks,

I've been a Mac user for many years but have never had the need to use
ethernet. But now I find that I sure could use that extra serial port. So
my question is, is there any hardware (inexpensive?) that will allow me to
connect my printer through my built-in ethernet port? (I've tried using
PortJuggler to manage the serial ports but there are just too many
conflicts with the product.) I've looked through many Mac catalogs but
don't really know what I'm looking for. Thanks to anyone who can give me
this info. By the way, the ethernet is the one built in to the 6100/60.

Thanks,
Doug Unruh

There's no virus protection software and there are no known Newton viruses.
What you describe is an "easter egg" built into the Newton's ROMs. The
first time you start it on a day with a solar eclipse anywhere in the
world (I think there was a partial one in New Zealand last week), it will
display that screen.

Bruce, the three things I'd do at this point are:

Backup all data :-) !

Use Drive Setup 1.0.4's Test routine to check the mechanical integrity of
the HD--if it turns up lots of I/O errors the drive hardware is going
down...

If the drive checks OK, use Drive Setup to do a (so called) low level
format of the drive. You've initized, but that's just putting on a new
directory...

If the drive formats--which is another test of its integrity--re-install
your system. Yes, if you can get Eng System 7.5.X and do Upgrade 2 to
7.5.3 you'll be even happier, and V.1.2 of the Japanese Language Kit would
then work nicely on top of things if you still want Nihongo--I'm actually
using V.1.0 of the JLK under 7.5.3, but that's a subject of another post...

Oh, but 7.5.3 takes a bucket of RAM all by itself, though less w/o Open
Transport.
But then, contrary to many reports, Open Transport 1.1 is worth it...

all the best...

Subject: print driver

Hello all ! Right at the moment I have a Cannon BJ-5 black and white
printer . The software that I have driving it is the very first release of
PowerPrint (this version was not even for public release except as part of
the software package that came with my mac at the time) . I am not at all
happy with this software package and would like to finally get something
else to drive the printer . I was wondering if anyone could recommend a
printer driver package that would work with my printer ? Does anyone have
any experience with the latest release of PowerPrint (sorry I do not know
what version the latest release is) ? Thanks in advance for any halp that
you can give me .

cheers Tristan

Subject: Portrait Ripoff??

Hi,

I have a Centris 650 and a Radius Precision Color Pivot monitor. I tried
upgrading to 7.5.3, but it was a mess and I decided to hold off until the
dust has settled a bit.

The Macintouch page suggested that the Radius Soft Pivot driver was
incompatible with 7.5.3, so I went to the Radius page and then the Portrait
Display page. Portrait claims to support all Radius monitors, but the
upgrades they had on their page require MacPortrait, which I don't have.
So I called their (toll) number and left a message.

It turns out that they consider "support" to be charging $99 for a monitor
driver and a dongle!! They called me back and told me I had to buy the
dongle and MacPortrait 5.0 if I wanted to pivot my monitor under 7.5.3.

clip.......

The following is related to the Super Mac Monitor which is also supported
by Radius and may be of help to others in the same predicament.

After updating to system 7.5.3 my 19in. super mac monitor being driven by a
Spectrum/24 III video card would not function. I wrote to this forum and I
received a response from Gert-Jan de Waard who was experiencing similar
problems.

Gert-Jan advised me that Super Mac was now being supported by Radius. We
both tried to get technical info.

I was advised that I would need a new card as the video board is From system 6 to 7.xx. The monitor would not function and it took many
telephone calls ( no e-mail in those dark ages ) to convince someone at the
tech support that my troubles were real and not imagined.

Perhaps I have been unlucky and hope that others have had better treatment
>From Radius.

Finally I would like to say that system 7.5.3 works like a charm and I have
had no problems with the following two minor exceptions.

1. Open transport did not load ( as I had macppp installed ) and had to
reinstal.

2. Coupy doubler 2.0.3 ( Which I miss dearly ) does not function and I have
been unsuccessful in getting an upgrade. Has anyone found the upgrade?

Thank you and regards,
