[Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday dear tidbits,
Happy birthday toooooo youuuuuuuuuu...
Hic!
-Gordo (too much after dinner wine)]

In this day and age of "serving you since February!" I thought I'd mention
quickly that as of today, April 16th, TidBITS has been published each week
for six years on the Internet. So far we've heard of only one other
regularly published, edited publication that has been published solely
online for longer (The Irish Emigrant, which started in 1987
).

If, for some reason, you haven't seen TidBITS yet, you can check out our
Web site (which now carries translations of TidBITS in Chinese, Dutch,
French, German, Italian (soon), Japanese, and Spanish) at
or subscribe to our mailing list if you wish to
receive issues in email each week.

To subscribe to our mailing list, send email to:

[email protected]

with this line in the body of the mailfile:

SUBSCRIBE TIDBITS your full name

And yes, TidBITS is free and has always focused on the world of the
Macintosh and the Internet.

cheers ... -Adam

Subject: [*] 14" Coplandesque Desktop Art

This is a JPEG file of full-screen desktop artwork, which will enhance your
Mac to look Copland-like, and customized. You'll need to download other
shareware add-ons to get the full effect. This screen is a deep purple-ish
space backdrop with electric blue menu bars (simulated, yet look realistic in
Finder view!)
and imagery galore. It's even got fly-by spaceships.
This is for 14" 640x480 monitors

I used Aaron and After Dark's Screen Poster utility to get my desktop to
appear and have the menu bar titles line up properly. Without Aaron, or
Greg's Buttons 3.7.3 (or newer) with Espi Sans selected, the titles will not
line up. This will ONLY work on a 14" monitor. (The JPEG is 643 x 480 pixels)
To use it on a larger monitor, you'll have to go into a graphic imaging
application (such as Photoshop or DeBabelizer) and edit the Image Size
yourself! This will decrease the quality of the image, so you'd be better
off downloading one of my other desktops, in 15" or 21" format. I've uploaded
them to the same archives as this one was found on. sorry. : )

Other Stuff-
Menu bar concept is from AOL member SH Stealth, and the grid concept is from
AOL member HAMLETBP. I saw their work and took the concept behind it into
Photoshop and went a little spacey. All artwork was created from scratch,
with no scanning or copying of other files from AOL.

This desktop was designed in support of a dear friend who entered the

burden of his medical bills.

Subject: [*] =?iso-8859-1?Q?FlightCheck=81?= DEMO.sit.hqx

FlightCheck is a preflight utility for service bureaus, commercial printers
and graphic artists. It will automatically preflight files from
QuarkXPress, PageMaker and Illustrator. It will automatically report
information like fonts used (including those used inside nested EPS files),
what type of fonts (Type 1, Multiple Master, TrueType, etc.), resolution
and format of bitmaps, color definitions, trapping information, whether any
necessary graphics or fonts are missing, etc. The collected data can be
automatically entered into any user customizable form which can be saved as
an EPS file. It is a stand alone application and can be run on a customer
service mac or dedicated preflight machine. It does not require any other
application to be installed on the preflight workstation.

For graphic artists, the application will automaticall collect all document
elements including screen and printer fonts, images, required Xtensions,
etc.

This commercial demo cannot print reports or save files and expires on
5/15/96. The full commercial application retails for $399 in single user
copies. Ordering information is inside the program.

Subject: [*] BlackJack Deluxe 2.1.5

This program is submitted by me for the author, Ed Trice.
Regards,

------------------------------------------------------------
Blackjack Deluxe has been described as the best Blackjack casino
package on ANY computer platform. It runs on almost every Macintosh
with System 7 or later. It requires 32 bit addressing to be on
(meaning certain machines like the original Mac, Mac 512K, Mac 512ke,
Mac Plus, Mac SE etc. can't run it because they can only address 24
bits due to a problem in the Macintosh ROM.) Blackjack also requires
1600K of RAM to be free, and it takes up 2MB of hard drive space.
The 120 page color manual that comes with Blackjack Deluxe takes up
2.6 MB of space. This is a self running application; you will NOT
need a word processor to read the manual.

Blackjack is shareware : the fee is only $20!

NEW FEATURES FOR 2.1.5
=======================
* By popular demand, the "Red 7" counting system has been added.
There are now 15 different card counting systems described in detail.
* Face Down Blackjack rules have been added!
* French rules, new Bahamas resort rules, and the Horseshoe Club
in Las Vegas have been added to the rules menu.
* The Las Vegas Sands Hotel and Northern Nevada games without insurance
have also been added.

In total, 11 different rule sets are now available, including options for:

* Indefinite resplits of pairs drawn again to split hands.
* Dealer taking no hole card rules (European standard.)
* All dealer "peek" and "no peek" variations with Aces showing.
* Doubling down inside splits permitted/denied depending on casino location.
* Dealer hitting on "Soft 17" variations, where allowed.
* Face Down game variation (doubled cards & split cards only drawn up.)
* Early Surrender, Conventional Surrender, or No Surrender variations.
* Multiple resplitting of Aces.
* Subtle variations in rules where dealer's first card is either up or down
are now corrected (thanks to all who sent eMail!)
* French casiono rules (no "mixed marriage splitting") are also included.

The CrystalDesigner Light is a demonstration version of CrystalDesigner and
contains all the features available in CrystalDesigner except the
possibility to import and export data. Yes you can save your own entered
data to file using the internal file format of CrystalDesigner.

CrystalDesigner is a complete tool for building, studying and visualising
all kinds of crystal structures on the Macintosh platform. CrystalDesigner
is an ideal tool for both teaching and scientific studies. The software is
intended to be used by students and teachers at colleges and universities,
as well as in industrial research.

>From an educational point of view, CrystalDesigner will make the learning
of crystallography more interesting and offer a faster way of understanding
crystal structures in general. This is possible through the highly
intuitive user interface and by all different ways of visualising a crystal
structure.

For scientists, CrystalDesigner is a lightning fast way of creating various
graphic representations of a crystal structure. Furthermore, the program
is an ideal tool for studying coordination around different sites and for
studying the packing of a crystal structure.

Subject: [*] Eric's =?iso-8859-1?Q?Bookmarks=81?= 3.0 Release

What are Eric's Bookmarks?
Eric's Bookmarks are the greatest collection of bookmarked URLs available
on the Internet. Eric's Bookmarks make navigating the web easier by
providing an organized listing of Internet sites and resources, all
available via the Netscape 2.0 Bookmarks menu. Eric's Bookmarks contain
bookmarked URLs to hundreds of companies, organizations, magazines,
publications, software archives, search engines, news, sports, weather,
entertainment, educational, banking, government, references libraries and
Internet directories.

How do I Install Eric's Bookmarks?
Installing Eric's Bookmarks is easy. First make sure you have Netscape 2.0
or later installed. Next open the Preferences folder located inside the
System folder. Then find and open the Netscape folder. If a file called
"Bookmarks.html" already exists in this location simply drag it to the
desktop. Next, copy Eric's Bookmarks into the Netscape folder, close the
preferences folder and launch Netscape. Once Netscape launches going to
the Bookmark menu causes Eric's Bookmarks to be displayed.

How do I add my own Bookmarks to Eric's Bookmarks?
You can add your own Bookmarks to Eric's Bookmarks by choosing Bookmarks
from the Netscape Window menu and then importing your old bookmarks via the
=46ile menu.

You can also request to have a URL added to future versions of Eric's
Bookmarks by choosing "Add URL" from the Eric's Bookmarks menu item.

Are Eric's Bookmarks free?
No. If you wish to remain using Eric's Bookmarks after the initial 30 day
trial period you must pay your Shareware fee. You can do this by choosing
"Pay Shareware Fee" from the Eric's Bookmarks menu item.

Subject: [*] OptiMem RAM Charger 2.1.4

Description:
You can never be too rich, too thin, or have too much memory. OptiMem RAM
Charger is a new, major upgrade to OptiMem: the breakthrough technology
that makes a fundamental improvement in the way Mac applications use
memory. It not only makes a whole lot more of your memory usable, for
keeping more applications and documents open, it also makes your memory
more flexible and reliable. OptiMem RAM Charger is easier to use, yet
offers more control over how memory is OptiMized.

An OptiMized app can open initially into a minimal size block of
memory--then resize automatically--right out to the limits of the memory in
your machine. Cuts down on application-related "Not Enough Memory" errors
and crashes.

If you use virtual memory or RAM Doubler, OptiMem RAM Charger helps you get
a lot more into your extended memory space, too. Works on ANY MAC,
including Pluses, SEs, Classics, LCs and Power Macs (works with Modern
Memory Manager and System 7.5, too). Requires System 7. Makes plenty of
memory available for 4MB Macs to use System 7 and current versions of
popular apps, productively.

This complete copy of OptiMem RAM Charger operates for 7 days after
installation. Full documentation is included.

Subject: [*] YA Base64 1.2.1

Yet Another Base64 Decoder version 1.2.1 is a simple droplet designed to
decode MIME Base64 encoded as well as uuencoded files that are dropped upon
it. It assumes that all segments of the original MIME or uuencoded document
have been concatenated into the file being decoded, and that the segments
are in order. It will optionally attempt to recursively decode files until
no further Base64 decoding or uudecoding is possible.

This is intended primarily as a helper application for Yet Another
NewsWatcher. It is not a general purpose MIME document decoder. It is not
even a general purpose Base64 decoder. Neither is it a fast or smart
uudecoder. However, it does handle most usenet Base64 and uuencoded
binaries fairly well, and it can deal with multiple attached files.

It requires, but does not test for, System 7 or later.

Version 1.2.1 adds support for getting the type and creator of files from
the MIME headers (when this information is present). It also yields time to
other applications somewhat less frequently, resulting in noticably faster
decoding.

Subject: [*] Yet Another NewsWatcher 2.2.0 b7

Yet Another NewsWatcher is a Usenet newsreader application for Macintosh
featuring binary and anonymous remailer posting, article filtering (kill
files), and article sorting.

Version 2.2.0b6 replaces 2.2.0b4 and 2.1.8. Improvements include synching
with original NewsWatcher 2.1.2, bug fixes for searching headers and
editing filters, and a few minor feature enhancements.

Yet Another NewsWatcher is free. It may not be sold for profit or included
with software or other products which are sold for profit without the
permission of Northwestern University. Otherwise it may be freely
distributed.

Yet Another NewsWatcher was developed by Brian Clark based on the original
NewsWatcher application by John Norstad. It requires a Macintosh running
System 7.0 or later with 2.5 megabytes or more of memory and a hard drive.
The Mac must be connected to the Internet, and MacTCP or Open Transport
must be properly installed and configured. Unlike the original NewsWatcher,
YA-NewsWatcher will NOT run on machines without Color QuickDraw (which
includes all 68000 Macs).

YA-NewsWatcher is distributed as a "fat binary." This means that it runs in
native 68K mode on Motorola 68K Macintoshes, and it runs in native PowerPC
mode on Power Macintoshes.

For dialup use, YA-NewsWatcher works with the various SLIP and PPP
programs, and with ARA together with an appropriately configured
AppleTalk/IP gateway. It is strictly an online newsreader, and it does not
support any other kind of dialup connection. The program requires an active
full TCP/IP connection to the Internet. It does not support offline
newsreading, and it does not support older kinds of dialup connections
designed primarily for simple terminal emulation.

It was included along with lots of original short movies by Laurie
Anderson and other stuff, on the first sample CD-ROM from Apple promoting
QuickTime, whenever that was -- about three years back? Larger dealers
and user groups might have it stashed in a cupboard somewhere. Also at
dealers, Apple often sends them copies of both current and "history-of"
Apple advertising campaigns on VHS tape. Check them out. I know my local
dealer (and former employer) has both, but I don't suppose you're going
to travel all the way to Botswana for them. :-)

I've had this problem too. I found that the application causing the
problem was actually a control panel - Microsoft (Microfunk) Office
Manager, and once I disabled it, I never had the problem again. If you
happen to be one of the people who actually uses the MS office manager, I
suggest switching to the Launcher or Z-mac's Quick Launch.

Or (and I prefer this option myself)

If you use system 7.5.x, goto the Apple Menu Options Control Panel, and
turn sub-menus ON. Then create a folder in your apple menu called
something like "@QuickAccess". Then put an alias of anything that you want
a quick link to in that folder. You can also put alias' of folders in
there.

Sounds to me like you want a terminal emulation session (strictly
speaking not a network connection). If so, you don't need networking
software, just communications software (there is a difference).
ClarisWorks' communications module should be fine -- you do need
Communications Toolbox tools like Serial Tool or Apple Modem Tool to be
present in your Extensions folder (inside your System Folder) to use CW's
comms module. Otherwise, there are dozens of terminal emulators and comms
packages on Info-Mac archive mirror sites -- ZTerm is popular. Check the
comms directory on your local Info-Mac archive.

Hi,
I had trouble trying to keep the sound settings after upgrading to 7.5.3
-- every once in a while, it seemed, my sounds would go mute. I don't know
if this is the same problem you are having but I eventually figured out
what the problem was on my machine. It was the "energy saver". There is a
preference to "turn sound off" when the energy saver kicks in and makes
your computer sleep. For some reason, this was changing the sound
*preferences* to mute and never resetting them. Once I turned the energy
saver preference off, it fixed the problem.
I hope that helps you. Maybe it's not the same problem.

Chris, in all the fun "learning exercises" you cite, there seems to be no
mention of your having used the lowly Apple Disk First Aid. I have no
idea whether this will do anything at all for your folder problem, but
after NDD repeatedly reported - and on each successive run claimed to fix
- similar problems on a PM 6100's HD, Disk First Aid *did* fix them, after
which NDD was again happy.

If you are using System 7.5.3, use DFA 7.2.2 (which probably will have to
be explicitly Custom Installed.under the Utilities category).

Again perhaps unrelated to your initial problem, but: In fixing the 6100,
several Info-Mac correspondents suggested that the new Drive Setup (1.0.4)
- but *not* Apple HD SC Setup - be used to update the disk's driver
(assuming of course that we were not using a third-party driver). This
seemed to help.

The last time that I had such a Hell folder problem, a hard drive
re-format and restore from backup finally eradicated it.

Subject: Info-Mac Digest V14 #91

After asking info-mac readers to comment on the installation and
functioning of the 7.5.3 upgraded OS I received thirty-five answers varying
between "don't touch it "to "pretty good but not perfect." After
concluding that it was not for me at this time I put the thought of upgrade
to rest.

That is until I had a complete system OS failure and was forced to
do a clean install for the first time and after an easy attempt at that
figured, well why not give it a try. I had been thinking that this is the
perfect and safe way to install the upgrade, guaranteeing a perfect virgin
OS for the upgrading, without the likelihood of incipient corruption from
constant re-booting (yeah, after a billion or so type 11 errors and freezes
too numerous to mention). So I did it.

I installed, after running Norton Utilities, optimizing and Disk
Doctoring it to perfection. I followed the instructions which many people
seem to glance at but did not follow (judging from somne of the letters I
received). I installed from a Zip and so used a custom init group of the
7.5 only and one driver additional for the Zip as per instructions.
It went perfectly though for the first day or so I was concerned
that there were many inits no longer visible from Apple's earlier OS
versions. I realized later that they were in the system file but not the
folder as visible patches. I installed all third party inits and control
panels and preferences et al and had but one minor conflict in which the
launcher would not auto install during boot, solved by turning off
worldscript init.

Apple did make a small error in not sending out message screens
telling the installer not to put in certain inits such as those that had
been included in the system file as I inadvertently dropped a few in there
and only upon re-reading the text folders found that they had been
superceded. In only one case did I get a messsage about same, with serial
DMA whcih upon re-boot told me that it was an archaic extension and could
be safely trashed. This did not happen with a dozen other equally archaic
inits.

How does it work? the Finder is exceedingly fast with nested
folders flying onto the screen. The finder is faster as well but no more
accurate than before. System freezes? With Netscape as bad and
unpredictable as before whcih could be the latter's problem but Macsbug
says memory manager is involved. Newswatcher? Ditto when timed out by my
server with respect to freezes. Overall? I say, why not? No real
conflicts and speedier. I had crashes before I have crashes now...no
improvement with communications.
Oh, did you notice I did not mention open transport? I was told by
an Apple Help Line voice that it is only slightly faster on my 7100/80 av
than classical TCP so I thought I would wait for a while on that issue. I
understand that a number of paramenters must be installed to get it up and
running.
So go for it.... in conclusion...

Leslie,

One solution would be:
from:

17.How can I play color games on my black and white PowerBook?
You can do this with any PowerBook that has a video output.
Plug in the video adapter cable, attach a VGA adapter (but
no monitor). Set video to mirror mode. The color image will
appear on your internal screen (set internal screen for as
many grays as you have got).

Problems:
1.PowerBooks with 400 pixel high screen will cut off the
bottom 80 pixels.
2.Performance rather sluggish, too slow for some games.
3.Some software manipulates palettes so you only see
foreground
activity on the internal PowerBook screen.

Or you might just need to turn the video mirroring on or off. I have not
tried that (I have a 520c).

I managed to find the answer to this question by looking in the manual (!).
What is needed is to drag the menu bar from the b/w powerbook display to
the external color monitor. To do this, video mirroring has to be off.

Subject: Posts in other languages

FWIW, here's my take on the subject.

I see no good reason for accepting posts in languages other than English
on Info-Mac; I see many reasons against.

1. Info-Mac has become an international resource for Mac users; and,
whether we like it or not, English is the de facto international
language (please note English is _not_ my native tongue!). Keeping it
English-only is in fact one way of making it accessible to more people
all over the world.

2. Info-Mac subscribers do not pay to use this resource. The existence
of Info-Mac is due to the volunteer work of a few people, who do all the
behind-the-scenes stuff. Adding one more wrinkle to the system means
adding more work to their workload.

3. Having posts in other languages will create technical problems. (Few
languages other than English can be written correctly in 7-bit ASCII,
which is the lowest common denominator on the Internet.) The sheer
volume of Info-Mac poses technical problems by itself; why add more?

4. Translating messages from other languages to English means delaying
them; but one of the best things about Info-Mac is its immediacy.

5. There is nothing to prevent non-English-speaking Mac users to set up
their own mailing lists, in their own language. Such lists would be much
more focused, and thus more useful. And Mac users who don't speak
English but need Info-Mac help can readily find someone to translate
their request, for instance in a local Mac user group.

Alternatively, Info-Mac could make available, along with the posting
guidelines, a list of volunteers willing to receive messages in other
languages, translate them and post them to Info-Mac. But this activity
should be kept strictly separate from Info-Mac, which should remain
English-only.

Subject: powermacs and MacX versions

I have a powermac 7100/80. I also have MacX 1.1.7, from use on my Mac II
(running sys 6.0.8).

question is: can I use 1.1.7 as is on the new machine? if I get the
upgrade to MacX 1.2, will that be all I need? or am I forced to buy the
completely new version (2.x, at $225)?

are there alternatives? I'd like to run MacX with PPP at home.

Subject: Refilling Laser Toner Cartridges

Does anyone know if this can be done with the LaserWriter 300 series
cartridges? I have tried refilling mine with Toshiba toner but the pages
were very dark with excess toner. So my question is: can these be refilled?
and if so, which toner is compatible with these Apple printers? Or should I
just buy new??

Thanks for your help

CopyDoubler 2.0.6 does not function with 7.5.3. It is reported that those
affected can back up to 2.0.4 and it works. AutoDoubler 2.0.4 is required.
It is reported that AutoDoubler is incompatible with asynchronous disk
operations (as now used in the 7.5.3 version of Finder), and will crash
unless used in association with CopyDoubler, which forces all requests to
be synchronous. Updates:

Well, you can permanently merge steps 2-4 by putting an alias to your
Eudora folder someplace easily accessible, like on the desktop or in your
Apple Menu. Now you're down to 6 steps.

Yes. From the "Windows" menu, select "Filters". It should be pretty
self-explanatory from there.

>I would appreciate any suggestions to make this process more efficient.

Beyond that, you could write up some AppleScripts to periodically empty the
mailboxes for you; perhaps even periodically ask you for floppies in order
to do the backup to disk.

This makes me think of a more serious problem in the disk's directory
structure. Have you tried to repair it with Norton DiskDoctor and then run
DiskDoctor again right away to find out if the problem was indeed fixed?
What does Apple's First Aid tell you immediately after the repair with
Norton? It may very well be that the probelm persists despite DiskDoctor's
claim that it was fixed. There also used to be situations where DiskDoctor
and First Aid disagreed (the repair of the first was undone by the second
and vice versa). To make it short, I always resorted to reformatting the
disk in such a situation.

I don't use 2.7, but use the release version of 2.6. No problems with it at
all, even with a 7500 under 7.5.3 and OT1.1. Maybe 'upgrading' to 2.6 would
be a solution?
