I've set up several Mac users of different DOS online-banking packages.
In each case we used one of Insignia's SoftPC/SoftWindows PC-emulation
products. They're commercial products -- but you only need the most
utterly basic one for most online-banking packages, since all they
usually require is a 286-AT with a modem on COM1. I guess this should
work with GeoPort, though I should warn you that I haven't tried that
yet. It has worked fine with internal PowerBook modems and external
desktop modems. HTH.

Yes: hold down shift-option-command-delete until you see or hear the
external drive starting up, then release.
Once you're running successfully off the external, open the Startup Disk
control panel and set the remote as the startup disk. That way, you won't
have to repeat the key combination each time because the setting is
retained in parameter RAM [PRAM].
On each subsequent startup, the Mac will attempt to start off the external
first. If the external drive is not available, the SE/30 will then try to
start off the internal, but will forever first look for the external until
you reset the startup disk.
Hope this helps. Cheers!

I use the Stretch control panel. Works like a charm with 7.5.3. Windows
does have a few good features, but not many. It sure is easier to add
their features to our OS than vice-versa...

You can treat a Portable StyleWriter exactly as if it were a Canon BJ10ex
-- because that is what it is. This one is unique in that it has the same
PC-standard Centronics parallel-port interface as the Canon-badged
version of the same engine, and Mac users have to use a (supplied)
serial-to-parallel converter cable to drive it. I've done this (driving
it from a PC using a BJ10ex driver) and the results were acceptable, but
not as good as using a real BJ10ex.
StyleWriter II's etc. should in theory be drivable from PC's too, I
guess, i.e from a PC using a serial cable (probably wired as a null
modem) with a Mac connector (mini-DIN 8) at one end and a PC connector
(DB9 or DB25) at the other and the appropriate Canon driver selected on
the PC. I couldn't swear to it though.

Subject: [Q] 9600bps PB modems & Apple Express Modem problem
Hello all,
A friend of mine has a PowerBook 160 with an internal 9600bps Prometheus
modem. We can't install Apple Express Modem, because the installer says
that "it doesn't work with this macintosh". Prometheus gave only a
communication package older than my grandmom (System 6 Age).
I was told that Prometheus was bought by another company. I would like to
know were to find them or the company that supports its products nowadays.
Also, I would like to know if there's another option but Apple Express
Modem, that seems doesn't work with 9600bps modems.
I'm trying to connect this mac to the Internet, using FreePPP 1.0.5. The
ConfigPPP Panel can't dial because it can't find the modem.
Thanks a lot!

Subject: Anybody Remember MacPostit
While getting my weekly dose of Dilbert on the Web I saw an ad for 3M about
demoing Postit notes for you computer; being a little curious I checked it
out. 3M is now offering a Demo of a new program written for them to let
you have Postit notes on you machine. I did not read much more since its a
Windows only piece of software ( and 2M download at that).
My query is however -- didn't 3M sue or at least threaten the author of
MacPostit a couple of years ago? Because of the copyright of Postit and
that they were planning a similar program?
Rant mode on
I'm just annoyed that a big company like 3m would let their legal
department go after some one with a nice little program (it nicer than
Stickies, but that just me thinking so), and then come out years later with
said program and simply ignore that group of people (Us) that they took a
program away from by not releasing a Mac version
Rant mode off
by the way I never got to pay a shareware fee for macpostit because the
author requested that everyone with a copy destroy it (this happened about
a week after I downloaded it). Does anyone remember who the author is? and
does he have any other shareware available. I feel the need to support this
person today, and maybe boycot (maybe just not buy for a while) 3M.
I'm done ranting now
I feel much better

I am about to purchase a CD-R system for a small service business
(multimedia production and archiving client material to CD's will be the
primary services). I am curious as to which systems and software would be
best suited for this. It will need to be able to make CD's for PCs and
Macs, although the CD-R will only be connected to a PowerMacintosh 8100.
I'm currently leaning toward the Yamaha 2x/4x mechanism, but I don't really
know which software package is best. I'd like comments on both the
mechanism and software choices. I'm looking for a low cost entry, it
doesn't need to be fast, but it does need to be flexible.

Hey Apple Remote Access Users!!!
I've got a friend that bought a Digicom Scout 28.8 V.34 Model 6500 modem for
his Performa 637CD. The problem has been finding a script that will work!
The computer was previously using an Infocom 14.4 modem. This worked fine,
and nothing's changed since then, so it's not the machine. By the way, he's
using Apple Remote Access Personal Server v.2.0.1. The only Digicom script
that we've been able to find is a "Digicom Scout+" script. Not only does this
one not work, but it's for a 14.4 V.32 modem. The Hayes scripts will not
work. Oddly enough, the only one we've gotten to work is a "USRobotics
Sportster" script, but then it will only give us a top connection speed of
9600 baud. We've called Digicom about this, and they plead ignorance saying
that the device was never manufactured with Apple in mind, so no script was
manufactured ... >:-Date: Sat, 06 Apr 1996 01:36:53 +0000

I also like the Keyboard Menu. Its available on the "International"
versions of MacOS, but using ResEdit you can make you version an
International Version...
Directions borrowed from Voodoo Mac (Tips & Tricks with an attitude) by Kay
Yarborough Nelson page 50...
(usual disclaimer about Resedit and mucking with you System. Make a copy
first work only on the copy. Make sure you have a bootable floppy or
CD-ROM handy in case you mess up -- You mileage may vary)
On a copy of the System file open it up with ResEdit find the resource
named "itlc" (without the quotes) (it looks like a hand moving card two of
a three index card stack) open the itcl resource and find "Always show the
icon" its a radio button down a little ways. It should be reading "0"
right now since you don't have the flag icon showing. Change it to "1"
which it *true* close all windows; quit ResEdit; Move the Real (current)
System file out of the System Folder (put it some where save for a day or
so just in case) move you System Copy (the one you just edited) in to the
system folder rename it to System if necessary; Restart you Mac.
If all went well you should now have the flag (icon) of the keyboard
selected via the Keyboard CP in between the balloon help and finder menus.
By the way if you read this far this trick works at least from System 7.1
to 7.5.3.
Good luck

The short answer: if you don't know what it is/does, you probably DON'T
want to mess with it.
The intermediate answer: It's intended for system and application
programmers to use during software development and debugging; it's NOT
intended for the end users of that software.
The long answer: It is a system-level, hexadecimal byte editor and program
debugger. It shows you screensful of hexadecimal digits and has a
command-line interface only an assembly-language programmer could love. It
can cause spectacular problems if misused, but can also show the internal
contents of registers and memory of your Mac which, in the hands of a
competent programmer, can pinpoint software bugs.
Hope one of these helps. Cheers,

First off, there are enough highly satisfied users of Eudora to suggest
that the problem clearly does not rest with Eudora. Most likely, it
results from hard-disk data corruption. Therefore, I recommend your friend
diagnose and fix the problem, since it can occur with any software,
including whatever he uses to replace Eudora.
First off, I'd try deleting the Eudora Settings file from System
Folder/Eudora Folder. Then, I'd run Norton Utilities, MacTools Pro, and
Disk First Aid repeatedly until all 3 report no errors. I'll bet that'll
eliminate the problem, and your friend will be a delighted Eudora user.
Hope this helps. Cheers!

I am running on a ppc 6100/80 under System 7.5.3.
The system is somewhat stable if I run under FreePPP 1.0.5 & OT 1.1 but I
do get occasional crashes and dns errors.
If I move to the beta FreePPP 2.5b4, I get numerous crashes.
If I move to MacPPP 2.5, I get far fewer crashes, but numerous dns errors.
If I switch back to MacTCP, I miss the advantages of OT. But I am
forgetting, what are those advantages? Apple wants everyone to switch to
it, but will be providing a third approach in Copland. So, they advocate it
but will not be using it next year. So, why should we this year?
I guess I am missing something.

A suggestion: try booting from some other disk (e.g. an Apple System
Software "Disk Tools" diskette, a Norton Emergency diskette, or another
HD with a system folder) and running Norton Disk Doctor or Apple's Disk
First Aid. This may fix it (or it may not). The trick is to be able to
unmount the disk, which you can't do if it's the startup disk. HTH.

Subject: Video Capture Boards
I need to set up a Macintosh 8100/100 to do some video capture. I have an
Apple AV PDS card and a RasterOps 24STV NuBus card available, but I don't
have a great deal of time to do a bunch of testing. Does anyone know
offhand which of these cards would provide better performance? I'm
leaning toward the Apple card since it goes in the PDS, but I don't really
know. I do not have the MoviePak daughterboard for the 24STV and funds are
not available to purchase it.
Thanks for any information.

Do you have any information regarding the distribution of VR
Headsets that
work on Macintosh computers? If so I would greatly appreciate it.
