Subject: [*] AlphaBoat Children's Educational Software, Phonics

AlphaBoat is an entertaining game which teaches children the Alphabet. In
one activity the child is asked to find a "Big" or Little" letter. By
choosing the correct letter the child moves a sail boat from one tropical
island to the next.

In a second activity the child clicks on a camera and displays a picture of
a common object such as a hat. The program then asks "What letter does the
word HAT start with?" The target word is pronounced very carefully so that
the sound of the starting letter can be clearly heard. Correct answers move
the boat forward.

Both activities contain ways to get help finding the correct letter or to
find the correct letter by trial and error.

The program is in full color and uses many high quality digitized sounds.
Because of the included sounds the program size is quite large (over a MEG
when expanded). It is kid tested and approved!

AlphaBoat requires system 6.07 or later and a Mac with a 13" or larger
color monitor and 2 Megs of free memory.

New in version 1.1

The Big and Small Letters card has a button which repeats the question- a
much needed improvement.

Multiple clicks are trapped so that triple clicks won't cause the phrase
to be repeated three times.

Several bugs which caused error messages to appear when clicking in certain
areas have been fixed.

Subject: [*] DNRDeleter

Does your MacTCP DNR file become corrupt too frequently? This little
applet will delete the MacTCP DNR file every time your reboot or
shutdown. MacTCP/Open Transport will then rebuild the file the next
time your Mac restarts. Place it in your shutdown items folder. Very
handy. Requires AppleScript. Please note, you will not lose any TCP/IP
settings as a result of using this applet.

Subject: [*] FoldIt (light) software submission

ABSTRACT:
'FoldIt (light)' is a molecular modelling program to visualize
and manipulate protein coordinate files in the Brookhaven PDB format.
The protein structure can be manipulated easily in real time with the mouse,
zoomed or observed in stereo. Structure movement can also occur stepwise
for a more precise control. Animations can be created. Several protein
structures are included as example.
The present enhanced FAT version runs 3 times faster than the preceeding
release. It supports balloon and in-line helps. A printable user manual is
also included.

Subject: [*] Font Finder

About Font Finder
Font Finder is actually three utilities in one:

Font Finder - View different fonts and find special characters. Learn their
keystroke sequence and ASCII code. Copy individual characters to the
clipboard for pasting in other documents.

Title Builder - Create text with differing fonts, sizes, and styles. Great
for creating mixed type headlines. Invaluable when using foreign language
fonts, like Cyril or Thai. Copy your newly-created title to the clipboard
for pasting into other documents.

Converter - Convert measurements between inches, picas, points and
centimeters. Enter one and the other three auto-calculate. Also, calculate
a fraction's decimal value (ie: 1/32 = 0.03125). You select the numerator
and denominator, it auto-calculates.

Font Finder supports Drag and Drop to make it easier to work with Title
Builder. Simply drop the text you want to edit into the Title Builder window
and then drag it to either the desktop or your document.

System Requirements
1. Macintosh System 7.1 or higher (any CPU)
2. AppleScript 1.1 extension (part of System 7.1 and higher. Also available
free from Apple: 1-800-767-2775)

The Font Finder utility can be placed anywhere on your computer. A handy
place for it is in the Apple Menu Items folder of the System Folder. The
program occupies 487K of disk space and needs a minimum 640K of RAM to run.

Subject: [*] G*Power 2.1

Hi:

As a binhex attachment, I include the file gpower21.sit, an archive
containing three versions of a program for statistical power ananlyses
named GPOWER. The program is free. Support is partial. The file has been
checked using Disinfectant 3.6. I would greatly appreciate if you could
make this file available on your Mac archive. Thanks.

This is what GPOWER does:

GPOWER performs high-precision statistical power analyses for the most
common statistical tests in behavioral research, that is, t-tests, F-tests,
and Chi^2-tests.

GPOWER computes
(a) power values for given sample sizes, effect sizes
and alpha levels (post hoc power analyses),
(b) sample sizes for given effect sizes, alpha levels,
and power values (a priori power analyses), and
(c) alpha and beta values for given sample sizes,
effect sizes and beta/alpha ratios (compromise power analyses).

The program may be used to display graphically the relation between any two
of the relevant variables and it offers the opportunity to compute the
effect size measures from basic parameters defining the alternative
hypothesis.

Subject: [*] Listserv-Eudora-EasyView-FAQ.txt

Dear Digest readers and readers of the archive,
Sorry for the repost, but there was a slight misunderstanding of my
previous post.
So here is a slightly revised edition that should clear up that
misunderstanding.
For anyone having trouble using EasyView as a means of reading the Listserv
of comp.sys.mac.digest this FAQ is for you.

A. Software requirements:

Eudora 1.5.3 or Eudora 1.5.4.
EasyView 2.6.1 (shareware)
PPP or SLIP connection

B. Assuming you are already getting the archive by e-mail from one of the
listservs that distributes it you will want to do to do the following -
1. In the Finder - Be sure that the document with the "V" icon and name
of "Info-Mac Digest"
resides in the same folder as "EasyView" application. You may
have to move it out of the
"Info-Mac Digest folder".
2. In Eudora - Apple key-mouse click (hit both at the same time while
you point at the item you want to select. This is the same as the Finder
views) every Digest of the same #
i.e. Info-Mac Digest V14 #41 1/2
Info-Mac Digest V14 #41 2/2
are both of the same number and appear in the subject field
of your Eudora "In" mailbox
window.
DO NOT DOUBLE CLICK ANY ITEM IN THE INBOX - this won't do you any
good!
3. From the File menu select "Save As" and change your active folder
to the same one that
"EasyView" and "Info-Mac Digest" are located in.
4. Now look at the bottom of the "Save As" dialog box, and check to
see what is the status of
both "Guess Paragraphs and Include Headers". You will either
notice that they both have "x"
in boxes next to them or just a plain square boxes next to them.
If just the plain square
boxes are next to them, that means both of these settings are off.
That is the way you
want them to be. If an X is in any of the boxes, click on the box
to turn it off. Now you are
ready to save the file by clicking the save box.

If you don't follow this four step process, you will likely have problems
reading the digest once in EasyView.

delete any previous versions from your archives.

What is it?
Marathon-Phile Juggler is a program designed to manage your Marathon
files. I wrote it because I was not satisfied with any of the current
file managers. One unique feature is that you have the ability to save
your sets as double-clickable icons. Another is a feature that tells
Marathon which files to look in for its resources-no longer will you have
make copies of your files for each patch or combination of patches you
want to apply.

It's really easy. All you have to do is copy and paste the two nickname
files together (they are text files). And remember to change the creator
to Eudora's signature.
Since it's so easy, I wrote a little program that does it all for you.
I've attached it to this e-mail. It's public domain. Since, I haven't
tested it extensively, use it at your own risk, but it seems to work fine.

of Nemesis, a new commercial role playing game for the Macintosh.
This update was made using UpdateMaker, and allows owners of
Odyssey 1.0 to upgrade to the new, improved, and bug-free version 1.1.
A short READ ME file is included with the archive which explains how to use
the updater and the meaning of life in general. If one's Odyssey CD
already came with the file "Odyssey 1.1" on it, this updater is
unnecessary.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

The Odyseey 1.0->1.1 Updater requires any Macintosh, and that the
user own a copy of Odyssey 1.0.

Odyssey: The Legend of Nemesis the game requires any Macintosh
capable of displaying 256 colors or grays, with System 7 or
later, and 2552k of RAM free. 3064k free for stereo sound
effects. The musical soundtrack requires that Quicktime 2.0

(both of these ship with the Odyssey CD). Odyssey is
PowerMac native.

Subject: [*] QuickTime MIDI Player 1.4

What is it?
QuickTime MIDI Player is an application which will allow you to play MIDI
data through your Macintosh speakers using QuickTime 2.0 or later and
either the MIDI Manager or the Open Music System. To use QuickTime MIDI
Player, you will require _both_ QuickTime 2.0 and either the Apple MIDI
Manager or OMS.

QuickTime MIDI Player allows you to set up the way that the instruments
will sound on the Macintosh. Each different instrument is attached to a
track. You can have up to 100 different tracks, although you probably
won't be able to play that many instruments at once!

QuickTime MIDI Player allows you to customize the way that you will listen
to music coming out through QuickTime. This shareware version is fully
functional, but I ask that people who use it send in a registration fee of
$15.00, or whatever they think is appropriate.

Feel free to include it on the info-mac CD.

Hi Everybody:

As promissed, Survival 6.1.1 has come to lights. This version also supports
survival regression analysis with Exponential, Weibull and Log-Normal
parametric models.

The implemented algorithm readily converges to the MLE's of the coefficients
of the model with sarting values of beta's = 0 and sigma =1, even in the
presence of heavy censoring and in data sets with a limited number of
cases.

The parametric module has been tested against known data sets, rendering
the same
values. Nevertheless if you detect any problem, please let me know by

Survival is and will always be Public Domain and it can be included in the

Subject: [*] Trash-IT 1.0b1

Trash-IT is a tiny little AppleScript application that drags selected items
into the Trash, and then empties it.

What You Need:

You should be using at least System 7.5, with the AppleScript Extension and
the Finder Scripting Extension running.

To use Trash-IT:

* Store the Trash-IT folder somewhere safe on your hard drive.
* Place the alias of Trash-IT (italicized) in your Apple Menu Items folder.
* Select all the items you want to trash.
* Launch Trash-IT from the Apple Menu.
* A dialogue box will appear asking "Do you want to trash the selected
items?".
* If you want to do so, click "Run", or press the "return" key.
* Sit back and let your Mac do all the work.

(If you suddenly aren't sure you really want to trash these items, the
dialogue box
is your escape valve. Click the "Quit" button and double check.)

Note: I am also including a more powerful version called "Trash-IT NDB",
which is exactly the same, but with no dialogue box. This means that when
you launch Trash-IT NDB, either by double-clicking or from the Apple Menu, all
selected items are moved to the Trash and DELETED.

I hereby take no responsibility for you trashing anything valuable. Be
careful!

Trash-IT is email-ware. Email me if you like it.

Trash-IT may be included on a CD-ROM, provided:

1) It is not modified in any way.
2) This ReadMe file is included in the same folder.
3) I am notified and receive a copy of any CD-ROM on which it appears.

Enjoy!

Machine: Powerbook 180, MC68030, 14Mb memory

The saga started with PPP. I couldn't understand why nameserving didn't work.
Then I realised it wasn't that at all. The line kept dropping out.

[
Around the same time, applications would start and then die with no error
message. I found that I had a zillion disk errors (missing file record
for file thread) and fixed them with disc tools. The applications
problem went away.
]

I thought I would turn extensions off and see if that had anything
to do with my problem. Alas, I could not turn extensions off by
keeping the shift button down! And no, my shift key wasn't broken.

I rebuilt the desktop, and tried to zap pram, but couldn't zap
pram because it refused to recognise the key stroke sequence.

I obtained techtools, and zapped pram, but that didn't help my
problem.

[
Sometimes if I reboot and manage to fire up a successful
zterm I notice tens of CRC errors during sending from Unix to the Mac.
Mac to Unix works fine, except that it gets "cancelled by the receiver"
midway.
]

After a successful session, all subsequent attempts, drop out ...

Has anyone seen any of these things before?

I suspect a hardware problem which may be behind all of the above,
but consider that a last resort. I don't know of any shareware/freeware
hardware diagnostic tools.

I can't understand why I can't turn extensions off ...

I am close to giving this machine a lobotomy, except there isn't
an upgrade path ...

(at least some of) the anxiety of those living with 680x0-based Macs ;-),
I've reproduced the relevant excerpt below. *Anyone* interested in Copland--&
who isn't?--should get the entire article. Information Alley can be
downloaded from the usual Apple sites
(, KW:
AppleComputer on AOL, etc.), & subscriptions are available via e-mail
. Info Alley is well worth
the d/l time.

Copland Hardware Requirements
----------------------------
Question: What will be the minimum system requirements for Macintosh and Mac
OS-based systems using Copland?

Answer: One of the key design goals for Copland is to run on 8 MB systems.
Copland also is expected to require 40-50 MB of hard disk space, for both
the OS and for the swap space needed when the virtual memory system pages to
disk.

Question: What will the performance be like on an 8 MB system?

Answer: Our goal is that you will be able to launch your applications as
usual, as well as the OS. We expect that performance will scale directly
with the amount of additional memory installed, since more memory means
less time transferring data between the system's hard disk and physical
memory.

Question: Will Copland work on all types of Macintosh systems?

Answer: Copland is being designed to be an uncompromised PowerPC operating
system, that will fully exploit the advanced capabilities of this acclaimed
RISC architecture. Apple is currently targeting current and future
PowerPC-based Macintosh and Macintosh compatible computers. Also, Copland
will run on computers based on the Apple-IBM-Motorola common hardware
reference platform (CHRP) which are expected to be available in 1996.

Apple is currently exploring options for the millions of 680x0-based
Macintosh models. While it would be possible to program Copland's actual
software for a 680x0-based system, many features (such as PowerPC-optimized
code) will not provide any benefit to these customers. We are approaching
this issue from the perspective of "What do we need to do for our 680x0
customers?" rather than "What is Copland on 680x0?".

To set a default size for Netscape's browser window, adjust it as desired
then select Save Options from the Options menu. Every new browser window
thereafter will open to that size.

>The aspect ratio of all monitors would appear to be about the same, with
monitor
>size only determining the size of the browser page and not its relative
width.
>Am I wrong here?

You must not have noticed that most Windows users set their screen
resolution as high as it will go, regardless of the type and icons
becoming too small to read, of the fact that it's no longer WYSIWYG, and,
on most PC monitors, of the unhappy result that the dot pitch is too
coarse to actually display all those pixels, so some pixels simply fall
between the cracks. More = more? NOT! You will have noticed that many
pages done by Windows users cannot be seen without horizontal scolling
unless your monitor displays 1024x768. I suppose that's because, unlike
the Mac, the resize button in Windows always expands the window to fill
the screen, instead of just-large-enough. Tsk.

>I know that some people with Window machines, appear to see pages somewhat
>differently, and much depends on the font size chosen by the individual user.
>How should I proceed to ensure that my page design fits?

It's best to design for a 640x480 screen, as that's probably a reasonable
least common denomiator. Now, achieving that is not straightforward,
since 1) each browser, nay, each *platform's* version of each browser,
has different overhead requirements for scrollbars, menubar, etc., and 2)
users can display any combination of extra rows of buttons and info
fields. All of these factors conspire to take up varying amounts of
screen real estate and leave an unknown area remaining for your page
design to fill.

I use a 4FGe at 800x600, so I have the same "problem." What I did was
this: I used a utility called Screen Ruler (from Info-Mac) to set my
Netscape window to occupy a 640x480 total area. I then set the Netscape
display options to use about half of the maximum bells and whistles
(toolbar and location, but no directory buttons; toolbar set to text
only) and measured the remaining internal window space. I used the
attributes to expand a single-pixel black GIF to
those dimensions, created an HTML file to display it, and bookmarked it;
now I can approximate a 640x480 screen at will by adjusting the window
size to just encompass this black rectangle.

OK, so the window is the right size, now what? You must make some rather
arbitrary decisions: you're correct, Windows displays type--if the screen
res is 72 dpi--way too large; e.g., 12-point TT Times in Windows is
actually about 18 points high. 8-point Times would look about the right
size, except that Windows mutilates 8-point type, so I recommend that my
Windows visitors use 9-point Times instead. But if they've set their 15"
monitors to 1024x768, all bets are off! In addition, Win Netscape adds
extra space around everything: images, leading, letterspacing. Type
*will* wrap differently, so don't hard-break lines and expect them to
work cross-platform. In short, you can attempt to design for a fixed
width, but it's hopeless to expect your viewers not to have to scroll
vertically. Table borders in Win Netscape are alwys gray, rather than
picking up the background color or texture, and cellpadding is not the
same, either. Better leave extra space in and around tables. Inline
images that start a line have more space to their left than on the Mac,
so trying to position inlines relative to a background GIF is fruitless.
Are you frustrated yet? God knows how all this will look in the WIndows
version of the AOL browser!

The issue of folks who, for whatever unfathomable reason, choose to set
their font default to Hobo or Mistral is best left unprobed. They
wouldn't appreciate your hard work in any event, being congenitally
taste-impaired.

Finally, recognize that while Macs have a universal System palette, every
8-bit PC video card uses a different set of colors, so ugly dithering is
almost guaranteed except for the 20 colors reserved for Windows itself.
And those will be dithered, too, unless your images' indexes include them
specifically, in which case they'll be ugly on Macs. Kewl, eh? This tends
to be very disconcerting to designers used to print media. Of course,
anyone with 24-bit color will see everything just fine, regardless of the
platform.

Bottom line: the only way to ensure that your page fits is to write only
HTML 2.0 and forego tight formatting using Netscape-specific tags. In
other words, lower your sights so you won't have to worry about whether
it fits. If AOL users are important to you, don't use JPEGs, since
they'll be mangled beyond recognition. And above all, keep your image
files as small as possible by reducing their palettes, only using GIF89a
when transparency is required, and using the PhotoGIF plug-in to save
them from Photoshop.

NB--While I try to design clients' pages for universal appeal, my own
home page is designed to look good on Macs using Netscape 2.0. Others
enter at their peril.

Subject: EasyView config, = instead of - (Q)

Greetings,

I've just started receiving a new digest (Carpe.Diem - for Macintosh
evangelists) which uses a string of "=" to separate the articles instead of
the usual "-" string. I can't figure out how to configure EasyView (v 2.6) to
use the equal signs instead of the minus signs to parse the articles. I've
read the documentation that came with EasyView, but I'm stumped.

Thanks in advance.

I have a PICT file I want to make into a cover page in GV (I have
managed to do this before, but with a much less graphical image). When
I import it, it shows up fine. When I fax it, the preview shows almost
nothing but for a few pixels here and there (and the fields I have
chosen), and the same thing happens when I print it. Nothing comes up
bu tthe fields and a few pixels.

When I look it, it's still there just fine.

version 2.5.5., PowerMac 7500/100.

Thanks,

Subject: mailing list on mac: UUCP?

I've got a mac at home with a modem, right now I have the basic unix
account, with some PPP abilities.

I'd like to use this machine to run a mailing list. One option would be for
me to upgrad to a UUCP account and have my modem just call in every
20 minutes to download messages and then send 'em back out. Any ideas for
software that would run on a mac that would manage this?

Any suggestions appreciated...

In addition to providing more application memory on Power Macs, RAM Doubler and
virtual memory enable a feature called file mapping. In very basic terms, file
mapping allows native applications to take up less space in RAM by storing some
portions of code in a different location than in the regular application RAM
space.

You can find out exactly how much less space by doing a "Get Info" on a native
application. When I did that on a default installation of Excel 5.0a, I saw
that
it takes 4 MB of RAM with file mapping enabled, and about 10.5 MB of RAM
without
it (and that doesn't count some shared resources, like OLE). Since your system
software is probably taking more than 5.5 MB of RAM, you can't launch Excel on
your 16 MB Power Mac.

The bottom line is that you still need to have file mapping enabled to run
Office. RAM Doubler is a better solution than virtual memory because it's
faster, doesn't use up hard drive space the same way VM does, and still enables
file mapping.

The system software CD that came with my Power Mac included a Read Me file
entitled "About Virtual Memory" which had a more in-depth description of file
mapping on Power Macs -- it might be on one of your Performa CDs, too. We also
have some information in a white paper posted on our Web page:
http://www.connectix.com/connectix/rd_powermac.html .

Subject: Multiple Questions

Please excuse the grocery list, but I have a number of questions:

First, I currently access my internet account through 2 different systems.
One works great, but the other one (which is much lesser used) causes me
some problems. I am using InterSlip on a Performa 6116CD (Power Mac 6100)
with a Global Village Teleport Gold II modem. It works erratically at
best, and never at the full possible speed. If I set the modem speed to
19200 in InterSlip it never connects. Dropping it down to 9600 makes it
work, most of the time. But even then, my connection will get dropped at
some point. I mainly use this system to check e-mail and it usually will
drop while downloading mail. The modem init string is set to AT&F1, per
the manual for high speed connections. I have tried playing with the
settings in the Teleport control panel, to no avail. Obviously I would
prefer to utilize the full possible speed of the modem. I have read many
people heartily recommend Global Village modems, so I can only assume you
all know something I don't. Any pointers?

Second, I have recently purchased an Apple TV/Video card and 28.8 modem for
my main system. These were installed on the same day, so I can't say for
sure if the problem would exist with any modem, as I sold my old 14.4
modem. Anyway, the problem is that if I have Apple Video Player running,
and try to do something with the modem, the system will hang. I feel
pretty sure this is due to the extreme processor requirements of the high
speed modem and Video Player. However, the manual and the Apple Tech
Support library make no mention that using both of these is impossible.
Perhaps I simply need more memory (I have 8 MB, System 7.5.1) or there is
some other piece of software that is causing a conflict. Any advice will
be appreciated. Also, is there any way to capture audio only from the
TV/Video card? I know that you can capture a movie with sound.

Third, I am in interested in setting up a LocalTalk network at home. I
realize that the standard phone uses the two inside wires and that
LocalTalk uses the two outside wires. What I'm wondering is if there are
any kind of adapters that will let you simply plug a splitter into the
phone jack, with one side for telephone and the other for LocalTalk. If
not, where is a good source for a double wallplate? Although I do have
experience with LocalTalk in a pre-wired environment (normal and passive
star), any other pointers would be appreciated as well.

Fourth, is it possible to use Eudora as a local e-mail solution? This
would be for a passive star LocalTalk network for internal communication
only. Access to other systems or the internet are unnecessary. If not,
are there any other shareware or freeware solutions? BTW, I am aware of
EasyMail, but the Hypercard overhead is too much for some of our users.

Fifth, regarding the aforementioned passive star LocalTalk network, I have
read not to over-terminate the network. I believe that the indication is
to only use around 4 terminators. However, we are using many more than
that and have been having no problems. Can anyone tell me what "the law"
is regarding termination on this type of network?

Sixth, I've read much in the digest about Texture Installer, but I have
been unable to locate it in the archives. Does anyone know where it can be
found?

Due to the large number of questions, it would probably be best to reply
directly to me. If anyone is interested in the responses I might get,
e-mail me and I'll let you know what I've found out. Thanks for your help!
It's greatly appreciated!

I believe Sonnet Technologies (1-800-786-6260) offers something like
that. Basically it's a question of replacing the 68LC040 chip with a
68040 chip. They charge something like $150 (25MHz, e.g. LC 475) to
$250 (33MHz, e.g. LC630), but I don't know the details. I don't know
of anyone offering a separate math chip for the LC040.

Hope this helps, Florin
