Subject: [*] Buffalo: A Sliding-Tile-Puzzle Game
=A91996 Thornley Jobe
Buffalo is a sliding-tile game that uses some of the elements from the
classic "Fifteen" puzzle. Veteran Mac users will feel at home with Buffalo,
because Apple based the original "Puzzle" DA on the "Fifteen" puzzle.
Rather than ordering 15 letter or number tiles, as in the "Fifteen" puzzle,
in Buffalo you must arrange 24 multi-colored tiles so that only identically
colored edges are adjacent. There are many possible solutions and each one
is extremely difficult to find. To make the game more interesting, you have
a limited number of moves in which to solve the puzzle.
There is a reward for the adroit and persistent: Those who are victorious
in the Buffalo Challenge receive "Championship Buffalo" which includes a
set of tiles based on a different geometry - essentially a whole new game.
With either set of tiles, a multitude of starting setups and solutions make
each game of Buffalo a new endeavor. Buffalo will provide you hours and
hours of diversion.
Complete and detailed instructions are provided in the Help menu.
Buffalo is freeware. It requires 256 colors and System 7 or better.

Orniwell 2.1.0 is a text viewer that allow to look at big text file
in a unusual fashionably new way.
Orniwell is powerfull but very easy to use on your Macintosh.
To search for a string simply type it in the alwais on-line field in the bottom
of the window, Orniwell will show how many string were found and best of
all will show all them in vivid color and underlined!
You can navigate through the text using the keyboard or the mouse!
You can change the key string and indicizing again in a flash!
And more...
Open how many files you like, Orniwell doesn't use its RAM partition, it uses
only the needed RAM from the total RAM memory!
2 new commands in this version :
- launch the editor via internal Apple Event sent to the Finder.
- update already opened doc, shared with other program that are allowed to
modify the doc while you are browsing it with Orniwell.
Inclusion in CD ROM is allowed.
It's faster than you can think also in the 68k version!

Subject: (Q) QuickCam conflict with AppleTalk
I've installed the Connectix QuickCam electronic camera on my PowerMac 7500
(running System 7.5.2). In the AppleTalk control panel, I have set AppleTalk
to use the ethernet port. To the printer serial port I've connected the
QuickCam (a telephonic application is connected to the modem port). I
checked the QuickCam settings and confirmed it knows that it's connected to
the printer port. However, QuickCam doesn't seem to work when AppleTalk is
on (despite the fact that it's using the ethernet port). The indication of
this problem is that, when I invoke QuickPict, I get the error message "The
QuickCam video component could not be opened. Please make sure the QuickCam
port you have selected isn't in use by other software." When I turn off
AppleTalk, the QuickCam works and shows an image on my screen.
Has anyone else had a similar problem? Am I doing something wrong? All the
Connectix tech support could suggest was turn off AppleTalk. However, the
manual does not specify that AppleTalk should be off. It doesn't seem
logical that there should be a conflict between the QuickCam and AppleTalk
directed through the ethernet port. Is this a bug in the QuickCam software?
All help will be appreciated.

I saw a solution to this problem (I think) on info-mac many
months ago and have used it very successfully since on my
own mac.
The problem is that both versions of MS Word have the same
type and creator since Word 6 is only suppose to be an
upgrade. Yeah, right Microsoft
the Mac OS determines which to launch in these situations,
but the best solution is to change one of them. This can
be done through programs such as File T&C or even UULITE.
Microsoft Word 5.1a appl/mswd
Microsoft Word 6 appl/mswd
Both are type appl -- meaning they are applications.
Their creator is mswd, meaning that when a file is double
clicked on it looks for an application that has the
same creator as it. In this case mswd. I'm not a
programmer so I may have a little bit of the order
mixed up, but basically this is how it works. Obviously
all applications are suppose to have unique creators. That
way when you double click you only launch the application
that you want. The type is also linked to how documents
get their icons.
The solution is to change the creator type of Word 6 to
something else that no other program uses. I chose
arbitrarily chose biff and have not found another
application that uses it.
Word 5 appl/mswd
word 6 appl/biff
Now when you double click on your document it will
always launch word 5. You may also have to rebuild
your desktop to get the changes noticed. I don't know
why.
To use word 6 simply open files from w/in it. The
other neat thing is that when you save files from Word 6
the creator is saved correctly for the file as /mswd.
If you use the word 6 to 5 converter for word 5.1 and
you double click on a word 6 document, it will automatically
open in word 5.1 and the conversion is done automatically.

It's not a problem, it's a feature... -:)
The larger the volume is, the larger the minimum file size. On
floppy disks each file will use 512 bytes or multiples of 512
bytes. Finder info shows only full kilobytes and therefore reports
1K.
The 512 bytes size is valid for volumes up to 32M, then it becomes
1K. On a 320M volume it's 5K, on a 960M volume 15K and so on.
The reason is that a Macintosh volume can store up to 65,535 files
and the smallest block size is 512 bytes. 65,535 * 512 bytes =
33,553,920 bytes = 32M.
If you partition the drive into smaller volumes this size (file
allocation size) will become smaller.

You need to use a program called "Drive Setup". A copy of Drive Setup
is found on the CD-ROM that came with the 6200.
Unfortunately, however, the Drive Setup on the Performa 6200 CD-ROM
doesn't work. You need to get Drive Setup 1.0.2 or later (current
version is 1.0.3) in order to format internal IDE drives such as the
ones on the 6200 series. This can be found on the Apple Software
Updates archives.

Hmmmm...have you looked at CommuniGate, demo versions of which are
available on info-mac/com? You can send a message across the net and have
it go out on a remote CommuniGate fax server.
More interestingly, you can send the same message to multiple addressees
via multiple delivery paths: local e-mail, internet e-mail, fax, UUCP
e-mail, and digital text pager.
If you know the internet address of a CommuniGate server with FaxGate
running, you can send a message as a fax to a local (or long-distance or
international) phone number care of the server (depending on privileges
allowed by the server).
You can also print any standard document to a remote fax machine; however,
as far as I can tell, you cannot e-mail a fax after it has been converted
to fax-image format, except perhaps by saving it and sending as a graphic
file attached to the e-mail. This would probably require the recipient to
have compatible software to print the image.
You might check out the CommuniGate documents on Info-Mac, or write
[email protected]. (I have no connection with them except as a satisfied
customer.)
Hope this helps. Cheers!

Lanny,
We have six 6100/60's that *will not* run any version of ClarisWorks 4
under System 7.5.1 (it *will* run under 7.1.2).
Claris has never seen this problem before, but has been very helpful in
trying to trouble-shoot it, and at one point asked, more or less (I don't
have the exact wording available to me at the moment), "Do you have those
6100's that used the old RAM cache card?"
Well, I had no idea, but when I opened the case, this particular
(8mb-only) machine had a suspicious-looking single card, in one of two
identical slots, directly behind the hard drive. Aha, I thought! A RAM
cache card.
However, with the card removed, the (standard) monitor did not illuminate,
and the computer would not boot. So, I assumed that this was a video RAM
card, and that there was a second curretnly-empty slot for adding more.
So, just what is this mystery card, and do you have any idea why CW 4.x is
so stubbornly refusing to run under System 7.5.1? (We've tried all the
standard and not-so-standard stuff. When the computer is booted from the
stock Apple 7.5.1 startup CD - which loads virtually *no* extensions or
CP's - CW 4 crashes. When boot-up is from the 7.1.2 CD, CW 4 runs like a
champ. The older 2.x version has always run fine.)
TIA,

Subject: Damn Ramn?
Problems with a 4meg ram card>
Have you ever heard the dreaded minor-chord chimes tinkle just after
you've heard the breathy major chord at startup?
When that happens my LC475 locks up, the monitor screen stays black and
as I found out, this scenario indicates - Ugh - a HARDWARE problem. The
only times it has happened followed the installation (with utmost care,
well grounded wrist strap etc) of a 4meg ram card, which, incidentally
I bought from a fellow reader of this digest. I hasten to add the card
is perfect and the seller provided most clear installation
instructions.
Peculiarly this card, as any additional LC475 ram cards must, sits at a
45deg angle to the bus and although it is held by 2 small clips
there is room for slight movement. I noticed this by repositioning the
card several times and finding that it worked better sometimes than others.
But why?
After several frustrating episodes of minor chimes, I took a good look
at how the cover of the 475 fits on the body. The computer box,
sometimes aptly called a pizza box, is less than 2in deep so everything
has a minumum of headroom.
I noticed that there is a lug about 1 & 1/2inches from the back of the
cover projecting down from the cover which looked as tho it could just
press on a corner of the card. Suspicions deepened by having clean
starts with cover off but a lockup with cover on even tho it was put
back with such tenderness my sweetheart would love.
So, with some initial misgivings ("Omigawd this is my Komputer!") I
carefully snipped off the protusion enough to clear the card, using
heavy plier-cutters & taking care not to damage the lid. Results: so
far no minor chimes.
I am curious whether any reader has encountered similiar problems and
if so how they solved them.
BTW: this is offered as purely anecdotal info and NOT a recommendation
to follow. As in all things, use your own common sense.

Subject: HP Printing Problems (et al)
This seems to be an ongoing problem. I have a note at work written
by Connectix corporation explaining that some of HP's printer drivers are
to blame - seems that every time HP's background printing is used, the
driver literally grabs all available memory, thus slowing things to a halt,
or stopping them all together.
Here are a few things you can do that I have found may help quite a
bit for this problem:
Make sure that you have the absolute latest printer drivers from HP. If you
are in question of this, go to:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/html/deskwrit.html
and download the latest version for your particular printer.
First, restart with extensions off (hold down the shift key when you
restart, and keep it held down until you see "Welcome to
Macintosh/Extensions off".
1) If Ram doubler is used, do not turn on Virtual memory in #2.
2) In your memory control panel (This is located in the "Control Panels"
folder in the "System Folder"), set disk cache = 256K per every 8mb of ram
you have installed. Set Virtual Memory on - it should be twice the amount
of physical ram you have, and ram disk OFF. If you have it, 32 bit
addressing should be on.
3) Go to your extensions folder. (located in the System Folder). Open it.
Find the "HP Print monitor" - do NOT double-click on it. GIVE the HP Print
Monitor around 1000K minimum size, and 1500K preferred size. This is done
by selecting the "HP Print Monitor", and then going under the "File" menu
and selecting "Get Info". Use the "tab" key on the keyboard to go between
fields, and do the above. Then, close the window.
4) Get rid of any desktop printers you have on your desktop by putting
them in the trash - empty the trash afterwards.
5) Bring up the "Chooser" under the "Apple" menu, upper left hand side.
Select your print driver, and then make sure that background printing is
"ON" and Appletalk is "INACTIVE". Close the Chooser.
6) Go back to the Control panels folder, and double-click on "Extensions
Manager". in there, uncheckmark any other printer extension that you do not
have, (such as ImageWriter, LaserWriter 8, etc). Close the Extensions
Manager. Make sure to leave your two printer drivers active! (DUH).
7) Close all windows and restart normally.
8) Upon restarting, close the launcher and any other windows that come up.
Go up under the file menu and select "Print Desktop" and give it a try....
should work very well.
Below is a little blurb from Connectix's web site.... thought you might be

A: Contact Hewlett Packard and request Version 6.0 (or greater) of their
printer driver. This fixes some problems with extended memory such as
Apple's built-in virtual memory or our RAM Doubler. Click here to go to
Hewlett Packard's ftp site.

Disk First Aid is NOT a formatter. There is a formatter utility, whose
name I forget, on the Performa CD.
Apple's latest formatter utility, for both IDE and SCSI, is Apple Drive
Setup 1.0.3.
I often have fixed problems with Symantec Mac Tools which Disk First Aid
cannot fix.
Be sure to turn off At Ease before doing anything with any of these
programs, or you really will need to reformat the drive.

You can fix the problem permanently with a soldering iron. Just solder
little jumper wires (two are necessary) from the motherboard to the speaker
contacts. It takes about 15 minutes total. The only drawback is that you
will no longer be able to remove your motherboard without desoldering the
connections, but then how often do you need to?

I work at a local Mac dealer in the Twin Cities and we have had a lot of
that processor come in with the same problem. We have found that replacing
the battery has fixed the video problem in most machines. It seems the 475
in the only machine to have the problem. I think it is a problem with the
PRAM and the battery holds the settings, it just happens that 475 batteries
are dying hence the video problems. Beats buying a logic board.

Have you tried trashing ALL files ("MacTCP DNR", MacTCP Prep" and "MacTCP"
itself), or did you not trash the MacTCP control panel?
The MacTCP updater requires a "virgin" copy of MacTCP. This means a copy of
the control panel which has just been installed from the original diskette
and has not been used.
Try trashing the 3 files I mentioned above, and then re-install MacTCP from
your Internet Starter Kit diskette. Then try the patch. It should work.

Subject: PB520 serial prob
Andy Dannelly writes:
I have a disturbing problem with my serial port on my PB520. The
other day I downloaded some news, went off-line to read, them tried to
go back on-line and nothing, (messages are "Checking for Modem", and
then "PPP timeout"). I then tried to print to my Stylewriter, still
nothing, (error meaasge, "can't find printer"). The Modem and printer
still work fine with my Performa 631, so I *know* it is the PB520.
I have experienced this problem too occasionally on my old PB520 or my
new PB5300. Three possibilities come to mind, and all of them have to do
with the fact that the 500-series and 5300-series PowerBooks have just
one serial port:
1. You have AppleTalk turned on. Turn it OFF or you won't be able to use
your (external) modem or (serial) printer. (Of course, this doesn't work
if you are printing to a LaserWriter on a network, where you probably
need to have AppleTalk turned on.)
2. You have somehow selected the wrong serial port in the Chooser or your
application's preferences or set-up dialog. Not all applications
recognize that 500- and 5300- series PowerBooks have only one serial port
(properly called the "Printer/Modem Port"). So you get an option to
connect via the Printer or Modem ports, even though you don't have ports
with those names. In my experience, most of these older packages will
work if you select "Modem" port, but I can think of at least one or two
applications that require me to tell them I'm using the "Printer" port.
(The "can't find printer" alert sounds right for this particular
diagnosis.)
3. You have software that is not releasing the port properly. If
everything else is configured right and you still can't print or connect
to your modem, try shutting down the computer, restarting with Extensions
off, shutting down again, and rebooting (with extensions on this time).
This two-shutdown process has been necessary for me a couple times: you
might be able to get things to work with just one shut down, however.
Finally, I suppose I should mention two other things. MacPPP is in my
limited experience rather tricky, and you may just be having problems
with it. (Try trashing it root & branch and reinstalling?) And of course,
it is always worthwhile to make sure that your cable connections are
secure.

PlainTalk 1.4 and 1.4.1 do not work on the PB 5300 series. The older,
slower PlainTalk 1.3 does work. PlainTalk 1.5 is under development and
will work on the PB 5300 series. You can download a development version.
Although it is supposed to work on the 5300, I wasn't able to make it
work. However, it is an early development version. It can be found at:

Check the current issue of Macworld (February). It's a known problem. The
screws on 5xx series display hinges can come loose. If it becomes too loose
the plastic may break and it's VERY expensive to fix. I suggest you tighten
the hinge screws a.s.a.p. (NOT TOO MUCH, though. Don't strip the threads!).
...Sorry... Don't know anything about your serial port problem.

Subject: Pump My Ram!
I've just a mystifying and quite wonderful experience: I loaded up
37 megs worth of programs, opened them all, had lots of them running
and had my CDrom playing the audio tracks in the background
nary missing a beat.
All this on an 8 meg LC475 Mac with RamDoubler 161 and PLUS
Pump 161 downloaded from info-mac here. Pump, in the words of
its anonymous programmer, is an "ugly hackling" that allows
you to multiply your logical ram by 2,4,8, & 16 times.
I chose 8x and that gives me the equivalent of 67 megs which I think
should do for a while
No problems so far - altho I do regular backups of my stuff anyway -
after 24hrs of use. Certainly an interesting phenom...
Now what I'd like to know from all you gurus out there in there
is how the hell does this work? I know it's virtual and I guess
it uses some of 74megs of space on the hard disk; but OK tell me
more, because to me it's sheer magic.
Just for the record I took a screen shot of my desktop with zillions
of windows open plus About this Mac with all those programs opened
and still shpwing 32 more megs available.
So my thanks to Mr/Ms Pump whoever and wherever you are. And I look fwd
to hearing all the explanations-please post rather than email.

Subject: Responses to Sys 7.5.1 Text Translator Question
I recently posted the following question:
When opening a downloaded text file, a Translator screen
containing a
number of text Editors opens (e.g. SimpleText, HTML, BBEdit,
StuffitExpander, E-World, MPack, Sparkle, TextEdit, and a half
dozen
others).
I highlight and click on one or the other, and normally, my file
opens.
My question is:
Where on my HD are these translators stored, and how do I access
the Translation file to add or delete Editors?
A compilation of the replies I received, follows:
The 'Translator' screen is part of the Apple Easy Open Control Panel.
Every document on the Mac holds two fields which indicate it's type &
creator.
If you try and open a file for which the Creator is unavailable, instead of
the warning "The Application which created that file could not be found"
which
was standard on all earlier System versions, Easy Open takes over and
searches
the Finder Database on mounted volumes for Applications which can open the
file
you selected. (e.g. If the file was of type 'TEXT' and the creator
application was unavailable, Easy Open would gave you a list of every
Application available which can open a file of type 'TEXT'.)
This process is automatic, with Apple Easy Open installed. The only way to
add to this list of translators is to keep more applications on your HD
which will open
these files. So there is no list of translators as such except the File
database on all
of your discs.
The only option which the Easy Open Control Panel has is to delete it's
Preferences file. This is useful as once you've selected an application to
open the file
with, files of this type will always be opened by this application even if
unappropiate,
so in this case you can use the delete preferences option and you will once
again be
prompted for an application when you try and open that type of file.
My thanks to all who took the time to educate me.

Subject: Zip drive & At Ease
I am attempting to solve a problem for a local college. They have recently
purchased a Zip drive to provide a solution for students who have files
larger than can be saved to a floppy to have a way to take their work with
them. The problem is that At Ease is configured to only allow access to
floppies, and the Zip of course is not recognized as such. I would like to
find a way to somehow allow students to save to the Zip without lowering
security in At Ease, something that is basically unacceptable considering
the shape the computers were in before At Ease. My initial idea was to
find a program that would allow students to copy files from the scratch
folder to the Zip hopefully bypassing At Ease. Anyone with any potential
solution please e-mail me at >[email protected]<. Thank you very much.
