Subject: [*] 37thResEx 1.2.1; the resource extractor.

37thResEx 1.2.1 is an application to extract resources from files. It has
two modes:
Mode 1: Drag&Drop (automatic extraction), to extract all resources of type
'snd ', 'TEXT', 'XCMD','XFCN', 'PICT', 'ppat', 'ICON' and icon family. Icon
familes extracted by 37thResEx 1.2.1, show such icon on the desktop, 'snd '
resources extracted by 37thResEx 1.2.1 have type 'sfil" ad creator "movr"
(to play them by double-clicking...), 'TEXT' resources are saved in text
files, 'PICT' resources are saved in pict files.

Mode 2 : Application (custom extraction).
To extract any resource type.

Also 37thResEx 1.2.1 can move the extracted resources into an existing file
(with 'Unique ID' option available), supports the dragging of multiple
items and, in Drag&Drop mode, is able to work in background and tracks the
command-period/escape-key typing.

37thResEx 1.2.1 requires at least System 7 to run.

New since version 1.2.0:
Added the ability to save 'PICT' resources in pict files. Correct a silly
but malicious bug occurring, sometimes, when 37thResEx saves resources in
an existing file. New files are created at the same location of the
original. Minor changes.

Subject: [*] 3DF 2.2.1 Demo; Visualization of z = f(x, y) 3-D surfaces

This is a demo of the current version of 3DF that plots a function
z = f(x, y) in 3-D space. It also provides optimization
capabilities and contour plotting of the function. The new version
adds the capability to produce a quicktime movie of the plot being
rotated 360 degrees about the z-axis in variable degree increments.

Version 2.2.1 adds the variable rotation increment described above,
in addition to my new logo and address.

The demo is restricted to the preset functions (cannot assemble
a custom function). The documentation included explains all the
features in the full version.

Subject: [*] 4OP Librarian 1.0.0

4OP Librarian is an application for the Macintosh which allows you
to make up library of voice data for 4-Operator Systhesizer by YAMAHA.
One window has one voice data, and you can open windows as many as you
want. (It's only limited by partition size of the application.)
When this application receives bulk dump MIDI data, new window will
open and show you the parameter. You can keep 32 patches in one file,
so it's easy to replace 4-Operator Systhesizer's internal patches.

Supported Synth :
DX100, DX21, DX27(S), TX81Z, WT11, TQ5, YS100, YS200, B200, V2, V50
(I have NOT checked for all of the synth, though.)

Features :
Fat Binary.
Apple Script recordable.
Macintosh Drag and Drop support.
Inline input support for Japanese text.

This application requires :
Macintosh with 68020 or higher / PowerPC
System7 + QuickTime or System7.1 or later
Apple MIDI Manager or OMS (Open Music System)

Save Protected.

Subject: [*] Email Sound Replacer v1

CLIXSOUNDS introduces the new "EMail Sound Replacer v1" for both Eudora
Light and Claris Emailer. This utility will automatically replace those
boring stock sounds with an awesome new stereo sound that is a hi-tech,
deep male voice that says "New mail has arrived." Your sound resources
in your mail program will be replaced by a new resource that will
automatically play every time you have new mail! The sound is a 22kHz,
stereo sample and has very unique effects.

This is a great way to add some dimension to your email program. You can
download either file here, or at the CLIXSOUNDS WWW site at
http://www.edmondsun.com/clix/ , along with other sound replacement
utilities. The Eudora Updater will work on versions 1.5 to 1.5.3, while
the Claris Updater works on v1.0 to 1.0v2. It will not work on any other
versions.

No extra software is needed. This is an automatic update utility.
Instructions are included for easy, one-step sound replacement.

Subject: [*] Eumorpha 1.5a4

Fixes since the last release (two days ago):
1. The last release introduced a bug in the handling of "file-promise"
drags (eg from NewsWatcher or Anarchie). This is now fixed.

2. The first attempt at movable-modal (not, as previously described,
modeless) dialogs had a variety of minor user-interface problems, most of
which have now been corrected.

Abstract:
Eumorpha is a utility which will import messages in a few standard mail
formats, including Eudora's, into Claris Emailer. It will also burst
digests. And it can be used in conjunction with MailConverter to import
files in many other formats. Eumorpha requires Claris Emailer 1.0v2 or
later.

Subject: [*] Grizzly-1.3.1

Grizzly is a 3 mb, highly detailed and rendered combat
game for the Macintosh! It has four players, each with
dozens of moves, and their own background scene which
has been stunningly rendered.

Grizzly 1.3 features a computer opponent which slowly
raises to meet your level of competition, a deep,
fascinating arcade system, and excellent graphics
and sounds. Explore the dozens of strategies found in a
good combat game.

A listing of bug fixes/improvements.

**Version 1.3.1 should now work on all monitors from 12" to 19" and greater.

Graphics/Sound:
*Many of the combat screens were redrawn with KPT Bryce.
*A Grizzly startup screen was added.
*The old African drumbeat was put back into the game.

Menu fixes:
*You can now quit and escape from the player selection portion.
*A time limit has been added to the player selection screen, and the game
will begin when the timer runs out.
*The Key Setup was made a little bit cleaner.
*The HYPER/Normal buttons were added (change maximum frame rates
possible- not applicable for slower Macs).
*A registration "dialog" was added before the program starts.

Playability:
*The player faces were filtered to have a more realistic texture.
*Mouse control in Grizzly was made less sensitive and more playable.
*Another special move was added.
*The overall speed of Grizzly was increased from 20% in all cases to 50%
in other cases.
*The frame rate was sped up (the HYPER button) for faster and more
exciting gameplay.
*Blocking in Grizzly is somewhat retroactive (making it easier to block).
*Blocking is much safer in most cases.
*The computer opponent goes from easy/moderate and increases in
difficulty slowly to become hard.
*The computer opponent attempts less attacks/jumps than before.
*And many undocumented random bug fixes.

Subject: [*] MyDrag. XFCN for Hypercard.

Copyright =A9 1992, 1996. Tracy L. Hinshaw, Parnassien Language Software.

The MyDrag XFCN draws an object (rectangle, rounded rectangle, oval) which
then follows your cursor until the mouse button is released. MyDrag
returns the new "rect" of your object.
MyDrag allows you to set the following properties:

*Object Shape: Draws rectangles, rounded rectangles
or ovals.

*Pen Size: The thickness (in pixels) of your
object's border

*Pen Pattern: The pattern used to draw the border
(Gray or Black).

*Limit Rect: The rectangle in which your object
may be "dragged" (if different from
the window or screen rect).

*Constrain: "Constrain To Vertical" or "Constrain
to Horizontal" - Limits the movement
of the object to the direction you
provide.

MyDrag is provided as "AnyWare." That is, if you use it, please let me
know by sending "Anything" you have cluttering up your desktop: a poem
you've written, a picture of your dog, a program you've developed, money, a
postcard from your hometown etc. - just something to let me know that my
programs are being used and that they're not gathering cyberdust in a
virtual warehouse somewhere. (Please don't send any America On-line disks
though, the 3000 or so that I have on-hand already should see me through!)

Any commercial use of MyDrag must be licensed and approved by the author.

Subject: [Q]Hard drives working with HD Setup?

Dear Info-Macnetters,
I need some open space and I am going to buy a new
Hard disk for my IIci. Now I am at 80Mb, 5 free, cannot live this way any
more...

I do not know if I am missing something, in that case forgive me, but as
far as I have understood from recent postings, Apple HD setup (I have
version T1-7.0.1) does not work on all brands of drives not "manufactured"
by Apple (better said: not labelled by Apple).
The problem is that at least here in Italy buying such add-ons at an
Apple dealer can coincide with an economic suicide. Therefore I would like
to buy an external SCSI HD (300-500 Mb) in a normal computer shop, hoping
to find some better deal. But I also would like to be able to use it,
possibly without buying additional software. I am hopeless in finding any
support for Macs out of an Apple dealer here in Italy, so that I would be
alone.

I would be grateful if anyone could shade some light on this matter and if
what I wrote above is not complete crap tell me some "safe" HD brands.

I thank you in advance. IM never disappointed me!

I was given a bad disk to try to restore a Quicken File from.
I used Norton Utilities to restore the file. The file restored
but Quicken could not read the file. Quicken's error message is
"Not a valid Quicken File" when loading. The file has the Quicken
icon given to valid Quicken Data Files.

When I try to open the file with ResEdit I get the error message,
"The resource map is inconsistent with that operation [-199]"

Using Norton's Hex editor I can see that the file has Quicken
transaction information in it.

Is there a way to fix this file? Is there a way to fix the resource map?

Thanks,

Traci,

I recall something like this happening with the OnLocation application.
OnLocation would index the contents of the disk and to save space it would
use the file number, not the complete name and path. The number is given
to a file at creation time and since a complete restore was done the
numbers would change.

Maybe this is what alises do. You have to remember that alises are able to
find the original file even if the file name and/or the file location
changes (most times anyway). If you have ever used Eudora to "Attach a
Document" to a mail message you will also see a strange number, maybe
Eudora does the same thing.

On two separate occasions, ALL files and folders on a 1GB startup drive of
an LC475 suddenly has got their invisible flag set, making it look like the
entire drive was completely empty. Very mysterious. It took me a while to
understand how the Mac could start up from an empty drive... (well, it
wasn't empty, just looked like it)
Also the stationary flag of all documents got set.

After I fixed it the first time, it took 2-3 weeks and all files were
suddenly gone again.

I have never seen this before and have no idea of what has happened, anyone
have a clue about what could have caused it?

The machine is used only by newbies, running mainly Photoshop, PageMaker
and MacWrite, and there are no file fixing programs on the computer (such
as programs to hide folders).

The drive has been checked by Norton 3.1 and Disinfectant 3.6 among other
utilities.

A lot of people use BBEdit Lite 3.5.1 (freeware) and some of the HTML
extensions (freeware) to make a Web page. You then view it with your Web
viewer.

BBEdit Lite can be found at an Info-Mac site as follows:

.../info-mac/text/bbe/bbedit-lite-351.hqx

The HTML extensions to BBEdit can be found at your Info-Mac site as:

.../info-mac/text/html/bbedit-html-13.hqx

You can browse the above directory for other freeware/shareware HTML tools.

If this sounds too difficult, MacWorld reviewed HoTMetaL Pro (a commercial
HTML program) and said it was more difficult to figure out how to use the
program than it was to figure out HTML.

They basically said to save your money and use BBEdit. HoTMetaL Pro was a
bad port of a PC program. They claim it was reviewed favorably on the PC
side because there *isn't* any decent HTML tools for the PC.

Hello!

The control panels "Date and Time" and "Views" should help you.
"Views" allows you to choose what information will be displayed: "Show
size, kind, label, date, version, comments". You click on what you want to
be shown.
"Date and Time" allows you tomodify the way the date and times are
displayed. By chosing "None" in the fields and clearing the prefixes, you
prevent the date to be displayed.

By the way, I strongly suggest you to choose "24 h clock", and you will see
"21:54" instead of "9:54 PM". First, this is shorter, second, this is more
convenient. The AM/PM system is stupid and should be positively banned. As
well, North America (and the Anglosaxon world in general) should abandon
its obsolete and irrational system of measures (Farenheit, inches and other
pints....) and use the metric system (SI: System International). Ah!
Britain has recently decided to adopt it (European Union oblige). What are
you waiting for in the US and Canada?

One can also, by using ResEdit, set the system file to "Metric", and set
the way the dates and time are displayed by checking the appropriate boxes
in the resources "INTL", "itl0" and "itl1" in the "System" file. Which I
did for myself.

Best regards

The problem has been solved!! Thanks to all of you who helped me to solve
this problem. John Reynolds and Bob Philbrook were the winners who emailed
me the correct solution. I would like to thank F. Neumann, Don't Panic (A.
Brody?), Joseph McLean, Julius Friede, Sue Gipe, and Al Bloom for their
suggestions.

It turns out that Apple may store their HQX files "differently?" I used
the "save As" and Source options from Netscape Navigator and the Binary
options from Fetch and the download went flawlessly!!! It seems that The
Apple Server may store files as mac text files somewhat differently than
UNIX stores them. In my setup I lose that little bit of data that Mac
files need to make the CRC stuff match up. I think all of the data was
actually their, but a few bytes were missing and the resulting difference
confused Stuffit.

Maybe a net expert can tell us why the files on Apple's servers need to be
downloaded as binary.

Subject: Farallon Fast EtherTX-10/100 NuBus Problem

There appears to be a problem with the Farallon Fast EtherTX-10/100 NuBus
card. We purchased the card to run in a Quadra 840av (System 7.5.1).
Operating from its internal, on board Ethernet, the 840av has been rock
solid. With no other changes, adding the Fast Ethernet card from Farallon,
caused the the machine to repeatedly crash when moving files to and from a
Novell file server. The crash occurred using the Finder or Aladdin's
Desktop SpeedBoost. (The crash is almost always credited to a bus error. )
We also would experience application hangs whenever an IPX based
application attempted to run on the 840av.

Farallon did find and fix bugs in their card that were causing the
EtherTalk problems. However, we continued to have problems with MacIPX
(1.3), and OnTime, our University's centralized calendering system. OnTime
uses MacIPX to support its common calendar.

We have communicated the IPX problem to Farallon Tech Support. After
several weeks of silence, they blamed the problem on MacIPX.

Just to be certain, we purchased a second Fast Ethernet card. This one was
a Dayna Blue Streak 10/100. We installed the Dayna card in a Quadra 660av
(System 7.5.1). It worked perfectly. Ethertalk, MacIPX, OnTime and MacTCP
all worked normally. Then we moved the Dayna Blue Streak card to a Quadra
840av (same System). It also worked perfectly there as well. Finally, we
moved the Farallon Fast Ethernet card to the 660av. It failed with MacIPX
and OnTime exactly as it did in the 840av.

It appears at this point that Farallon's Fast Ethernet NuBus card may not
be ready for prime time--particularly with MacIPX.

I have a PowerBook 540 whose internal clock seems to keep forgetting what

is probably a battery on the motherboard that is pooped out. Does anyone

If the battery on the motherboard is tired, does anyone know how difficult

instructions on the web somewhere?

I would use a Utility to check the disk (e.g.: Apple's "Disk First Aid" or
a commercial disk checker). You can even use Disinfectant. Since it looks
into each file it will tell you when one file is so messed up that it can't
see inside the file (and of course it *also* checks for viruses).

I'd then re-install the system and then install the "System 7.5 Update 1.0"
which will make your System 7.5.1. Of course the "System 7.5 Update 2.0"
that will make the system 7.5.3 is supposed to be available some time this
month.

The System 7.5 update can be found in the following directory:

Apple's Latest Disk First Aid can be found in the following directory:

And the latest Disinfectant can be found at an Info-Mac site as follows:

.../info-mac/vir/disinfectant-36.hqx

As for asking for a disk, you can press the a time or
two and it will give up asking for the disk. This is usually caused by
someone changing something on the disk and ejecting it (not trashing it).

The Mac wants to update the disk information (possibly the position of a
window or the fact that the window was open or closed). There is no harm
in not updating the disk. You just have to be persistent with the
keys. This is most troublesome when a disk being asked
for isn't yours and you don't know where it is (e.g. in a Lab situation).

The overall consensus was that PPP, while not perfect, is the better
vehicle to use for the Mac.
Several people reported minor annoyances with PPP, similar to the
ones I had raised in my letter - such as the "Configure PPP" window
not redrawing until closed or moved in the background.
And several writers suggested ancillary utilities, such as "PPPop",

positive status of connect status.

Well, I'll stick with PPP!

Two things spring to mind. First, create a file on your root directory
called VMSKERMIT.INI containing the following lines:

SET RECEIVE PACKET_LENGTH 1000
SET SEND PACKET_LENGTH 1000

This may help, and it will certainly speed up your transfers if you're
using the default 90 byte packets. If the Vax is having to resend entire
packets to you as a result of a noisy phone line, however, you may wind
up with SLOWER transfers. Try it both ways.

Next, experiment with the Kermit Server mode. (I'm not sure when you say
'server' if you mean the Vax or the Kermit Server. Try it both ways to
see which works best.) When you enter Kermit, type 'server' at the Kermit
prompt. That will put the Vax into server mode and you can send it multiple
sends and gets. I've seen many cases where using the server works when
using send or receive from the Kermit prompt does not work. If you send or
receive files using the Kermit Server, you will have to send a Kermit
'finish' command to exit server mode before you can exit Kermit.
