Subject: [*] At Ease Disk Manager 1.0
At Ease Disk Manager 1.0 is a freeware utility application for Macintosh
users with older versions of At Ease (1.0). It enables users of At Ease
to protect a single hard drive while enabling students/users to manage
files on floppy disks. Files can be renamed, deleted, and moved from
folder to folder on a floppy disk. Folders can be created, renamed, or
deleted from the floppy disk as well. Floppy disks can also have all
files from their disk erased if desired. Make sure you read the READ ME
file before using At Ease Disk Manager 1.0 to ensure protection of your
hard drive files (proper installation). 1.2 MB of RAM, color screen, and
system 7+ are recommended for best operation. Direct questions to Ken Dunham
at [email protected].

Subject: [*] clip-to-gif-072
clip2gif 0.7.2 is a utility to convert PICT, GIF, TIFF and JPEG images
to any of these formats. It handles many options, including transparency
and interlacing, and can perform batch conversions. It can also display
and print the images. Conversions are completely scriptable. Graphic
shapes, simple charts and text can be added using AppleScript or other
scripting languages, making clip2gif very convenient for WWW cgi scripts.
Conversion functions can be called from any PowerPC program thanks to
the Code Fragment Manager. Fat Binary.
Main changes since 0.7.1: printing, clip2gif Guide (on-line help).
clip2gif 0.7.2 is freeware (see the readme file for the details).

From: Richard Buckle
Subject: [*] Flush all disks FKEY and Excel macro
What is it?
"Flush all disks FKEY" is an FKEY which lets you make sure that everything
in your disk cache is completely saved to your disks - with one keystroke.
Huh?
The disk cache in the Memory control panel can greatly speed up your hard
disk, especially with System 7.5 or better, by keeping the most recently
used data in RAM. But there's a payoff: when data is "saved," it's usually
only saved to the disk cache in RAM. It only goes onto the disk when the
disk cache gets full or the application "flushes" the cache. If you crash
or have a power failure before the cache is flushed, any changes in the
cache will be lost.
"Flush all disks FKEY" expressly flushes the cache for every disk that's
currently mounted, making sure that everything that's supposed to be saved
is actually on the disk.
"Flush all disks FKEY" is postcardware. Enjoy.
Version 1.1 has more robust handling of asynchronous devices.

Subject: [*] Freeware versions (4.1c) of Letter Gothic monospaced font
Enclosed is a "slashed-zero" version of the freeware font
LetterGothic-EGG.
Changes in this release:
1. Some minor enhancements have been made to bitmaps and to outline
character shapes.
2. The zero character is now "slashed," to distinguish it from the letter
O (capital "oh").
3. The tilde character is centered vertically on the printed line (as are
the existing asterisk and related characters).
4. LetterGothic-EGG-0 uses the *same* bitmap and outline ID numbers as
the original, under the assumption that a user would need to have only one
or the other version installed at a given time, but never *both*.
This Plain (Roman) version of the classic font Letter Gothic, a *freeware*
incarnation called "LetterGothic-EGG-0," is for printing text, such as
>From online sessions and e-mail editors like Eudora and PINE, that
originates on fixed-pitch (monospaced), Elite (12 characters per inch)
platforms or devices, such as many Unix, IBM or Atari computers; and have
the resulting output look more or less as though it had been produced on
an IBM Selectric(R) typewriter.
Macintosh PostScript (Type 1) and TrueType versions are included.
Enjoy.

Mario Biondi's Opera Database for FileMaker Pro 2.1 Vers. 2.0 Demo
COMPLETELY NEW!
This is a Demo of the Opera (Operetta, Ballet) Database (Filemaker Pro
2.1), on which I base my Opera WWW Pages reachable at:
http://joshua.micronet.it/italian/mario ... pera_.html
It is, I repeat, *simply a Demo*, in which you can find and browse data
about performances randomly chosen of 73 operas by 5 popular composers as
Bizet, Mozart, Puccini, Verdi and Wagner, plus Mr Abraham, who happens to
be alphabetically the first opera composer and is necessary here for
functionality reasons.
Version 2.0 is completely revised, redesigned and improved in functions and
frills.
You have now a Singing Cover (check it out) and 5 Formats:
Records of Performances
Ordered List of Performances
Ordered Opera Titles
Ordered Composers
Ordered Composers & Operas.
You can use a Short Manual from inside the Database.
My complete database lists (today, jan. 8, 1996) 1193 recorded or
broadcasted performances of 489 operas by 171 composers and I update it
almost daily.
What should you do to obtain the complete release? Read carefully the
Readme File included in your downloading and the last page of my on line

This distribution upload is a modified version of Phil Harvey's WebStat
2.3.4.
The major enhancement I've made is the addition of a Visits statistic, where
a "visit" is defined as "a cluster of files being sent to a particular IP#
followed by a period of time (default is 30 minutes) in which no files are
sent to that IP#."
WebStat 2.3.4DB uses CodeWarrior 6, though the original ThinkC project file
is included, and the program is setup to process WinHttp log files rather
than WinHttp.

You can also install the latest version of Apple's LaserWriter drivers
(which probably requires a PostScript Printer and maybe a LaserWriter) and
a printer will show up on your desktop. [This does *not* require the GX
printer drivers] Then you can drag files to the printer icon and have the
files printed. Is this what you're looking for? If it is, you can find
them as follows:
Just remember (like Pete Resnick's suggestion) this will launch the
application, print the contents and when finished, quit the application.
It still does the same things you would do only it does it automagically.

There is a control strip module called something like AudioStrip GH which

I am being dragged into Windows 95 as our NEW standard for hardware/software.
I currently use a Mac and Aldus Super Paint to model our computer room
layout and our CPU cabling plan. I believe these drawings are in the PICT
format and are somewhat to scale.
I am looking for the easiest way to convert these drawings to a format I
can update on a Window 95 cpu. My question is whether Corel(correl???)
will make a direct conversion of my drawings from a floopy and whether
I will be able to continue updating these drawings as I currently do on
the Mac with Super Paint.
I know very little about the non Mac world and any assistance/comments
would be helpful. Please reply directly to my e-mail address.
My goal is not to have to recreat all the drawings from scratch again.

Subject: Corrupted updates....reply
Hi... I was busy installing the 7.5.1 update, and was looking into
this problem from another person's posting last week. I brought down (just
yesterday) the 4 disk set *3* times from three different sites, once using
Netscape 1.12, once using Fetch 3.0, and once using a A/UX machine and
downloading it to my Unix box, and then to my drive. Every single time it
worked flawlessly. Although I had downloaded the Net Install earlier last
year, I also downloaded that as well, along with their copy of Disk Copy
4.2. I used the latest version of Stuffit Expander (I have the EE Expander
extension in the extensions folder, but that shouldn't make any difference)
which uncompressed them into diskcopy images. I used both Disk Dup 2.7 and
DiskCopy to mount the images to floppies. I then took Mac Tools and ran
checks on all four disks (from every site!) and was unable to come up with
any problems. I installed two of them on my machine, with no problems.
I would suggest that something MUST be set incorrectly somewhere
along the way. I have many other people I know downloading them with no
problems. When you download using Netscape, try pressing and holding on the
link, and selecting "Save As" and then as "source", *not* "text". See if
that helps. In Fetch, put it on "text" or "ascii", not "automatic" to
ensure that you are downloading them correctly.
Hope this was some assistance.....

Subject: Power Mac 7500 or 7200/90
I'm going to be buying one of the above named computers this Winter.
If I buy a 7500, it will be in the 16Mb RAM/500Mb HD configuration. If I
choose the 7200/90, I will have the memory upgraded to 16Mb and the VRAM
upgraded to 2Mb (it will still cost less than the 7500). This will mean that
the only real difference between the two is the video/audio stuff (10
clock-doubled MHz won't make much difference to me, currently on a IIsi
with a 128K cache card and the processor upgrade won't be in my plans for
several years...by then, I may be buying a totally new CPU or the 7200
motherboard swap will be reasonably priced [yeah right]...the fast SCSI
bus isn't that important to me, either, though I'm sure it can't hurt).
So just what do Composite video in and S-video in jacks get me, as a home
user? I'm thinking both in terms of what's available to me now, and what
new technologies are in the works for the forseeable future. If I get an
ISDN connection (they're relatively cheap here in NY), would they be
helpful/useful in anyway?
And the added audio: those RCA jacks look really tempting to me (I do
amateur sequencing work, plus I like to record my own beep sounds). Is
there some other way for me to get whatever functionality they give
without getting them built-in? Are they really that much better than the
little "Y" plugs that came with my IIsi? I'm not cutting CDs.
I'm also intrigued by the idea of using the Mac for telephony type stuff
(getting the phone off my desk would reclaim some major real estate!).
This is possible with both models, correct (assuming I purchase a GeoPort
pod and other relevant hard-/software...and assuming that I'm willing to
deal with whatever drawbacks there are)?
I can get a Newton with the price difference between the two
configurations, and I want a Newton (that's right, "want" not "need") at
some point, too. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Opinions
are always welcome, but if you've got hard facts or experiences,
throw some of them my way, too.
Thanks,
Byron

Eckhard,
What you need is the "PPPfloater" Control Panel. What this does is to pop
up a mini window that keeps track of your time on line. Then you can
ignore the ConfigPPP Control Panel.
You dont' have to close then open the window to get the current status of
the button, cover ConfigPPP with another window. When it it re-drawn the
correct button status is shown. The problem is that ConfigPPP doesn't
re-draw itself after the connection is made.
But use the above PPPfloater and you will never wonder again. Don't use an
inferior transport just because of the status of the botton. In fact you
never need to see ConfigPPP at all. Launch the TCP/IP application you want
and MacTCP & MacPPP are launched automagically. Click the sissors cutton
to "cut" the PPP connection.
The PPPfloater can be found at an Info-Mac site as:

Subject: Q: SupraFAXModem on AV Mac
I'm hoping that someone can help me with this problem.
I just purchased a SupraFAXModem 288. I am trying to use it on my Centris
660AV Mac. It works fine when I connect it through my printer port.
However, when I try to connect it through the Geo/modem port data cannot
transfer between the drive and the modem. The problem seems to be that the
pin configuration of the two ports is different. The printer port has 8
pins (3/3/2) while the Geo/modem port has 9 (3/4/2). The cable that came
with the modem has 8 pins.
I really don't want to go rooting around the back of my computer every time
I want to switch between my printer and my modem.
Is there anyone else who has had this problem? I'd really appreciate any
help that anyone can offer.
Thanks in advance.

> on this extension. My questions:
>

In addition to Michael Carnes' response in v13#158, I received several e-mail
responses (from Nils Dahl, Dennis Des Chene, Phil Hudson, Paul Koch, and
possibly some others I forgot to mention).
The responses conveyed the following information:
The QuickTime Musical Instruments extension allows a Macintosh to be used
as a MIDI device. The extension itself implements a collection of "standard"
MIDI instruments (based upon samples from Roland). 128 instruments are
supported, including an acoustic grand piano, various other piano and other
instruments (flute, violins, sitar, etc.), as well as synth noises and sound
effects (seashore, telephone, gunshot, etc.).
Arnold's MIDI Player v2.4b (in the Info-Mac archives) was mentioned in several
responses. This shareware product allows you to play MIDI files. (Michael
Carnes also mentioned that SimpleText can play MIDI files, but I must confess
that I haven't tried that trick yet.)
Over this last weekend I installed Passport Master Tracks Pro, a low-end
(approx. US $80) program that allows you to create music tracks; these can be
saved as MIDI files. My version (6.0.1) *does* support the QuickTime Musical
Instruments Extension.
All in all, my new hardware and software offer vast improvements over the
four-voice Mac Plus/Deluxe Music Construction Set hardware and software
that I was using in the late 1980s!
Thanks again to all who responded.

Dear sirs,
Hereby I submit my request to your digest, with a stripped-down
version of my signature.
Some time ago, I bought a Voyager "Expanded Book", which I
understand to be a HyperCard stack.
Therefore, currently I am looking for a *freeware* HC player; it
does not matter if that would be Apple's own HC player. I looked in
various archives, such as Info-Mac and Umich, as well as Apple's support
sites, but found nothing of the sort. The only HC player I found on
Info-Mac and Umich demands a shareware fee.
Therefore, I would be grateful if you could include one or more
such player(s) in your otherwise truly comprehensive archive. This way,
the player would be made available to the Mac community at large, now
that HC is no longer bundled with Apple's system software.
I look forward to the inclusion of such software in your archive.
Yours sincerely,
