Subject: [*] AZ Update 1.0.3

These files will update your existing Absolute Zero version 1.0 or 1.0.1 to
version 1.0.3. If you don't want to take the time and expense to download a
3MB file, you can wait for your update CD to come in the mail. If you
haven't sent in your registration card, do so immediately. If you lost
your card or can't remember if you registered, send email to DomarkUSA.

There have been many changes in version 1.0.3. So many that we've lost
track of some of them. Most of the missions have been re-balanced to make
them easier to win, including Attack on Aegis 2. We've fixed a few bugs,
including one that wouldn't let you play the last four missions (Chapter 13)
even if you had completed all previous missions. We've improved the
targeting system to make it more intelligent about which object it chooses
when you're trying to acquire a target, and we've made the targeting boxes
a little more useful in various ways. And we've added 'chunky' explosions:
objects will now explode into pieces instead of just disappearing in a
fireball.

Version 1.0.2 was released only on the PC. There were some additional
changes needed after the PC version was released before the Mac version
1.0.2 could be released, so we decided to call it 1.0.3 instead.

Version 1.0.1 fixed a few minor bugs, and updated the first mission
(What's Out There?) to make it a lot easier to plant the mole pods
successfully.

We have also included new joystick settings in the Joystick Settings folder
for the Flightstick, Gravis Mousestick, and Thrustmaster joysticks. These
settings have not changed since version 1.0.1.

Subject: [*] Battle Planets

A state of war exists between the Empire and the Rebels. In this game you
are the commander of a fleet of space-fighters, manned by courageous
rebels, attempting to save thier home world from certain destruction at the
hands of the evil Galactic Empire. You are thier last hope in achieving
peace and tranquility in this galaxy!

You set the course of the rebel fighter fleet, keeping your eye on the
overall strategy. You must try to avoid the Empire at all costs, but
sometimes sacrafices are necessary. You know you can't win an all-out
frontal assault on the superior empire ships, so you must use your cunning
to out-think them!

You control the engagements with the enemy at each individual battle. You
direct the attack formations, attack strength and defense posture. You even
have access to the latest secret weapons that your eccentric rebel
scientists have concocted! You will need every advantage you can muster to
defeat the overwhelming odds in favor of the Empire.

We are sure you will like this game, so when you send in your shareware
payment of only US$8, we will send a password via e-mail (or regular mail),
that will allow you to have access to the more advanced features of the
game including:

o 2 extra playing levels (Challenge and Massacre)
o Access to secret weapons
o Ability to group and ungroup fleets
o 3 extra attack formations (Wedge, Scatter and Wing)

GLMStat is a statistical program for analysing generalised linear models.
It provides a macintosh interface but otherwise operates in a similar
fashion to GLIM but with less features (most of which you probably won't

- spreadsheet style data entry
- Normal, Poisson, Binomial and Gamma models with appropriate links and
specification of convergence and aliasing parameters
- Scatter and Residual plots
- Output of deviance, parameter estimates, residuals and parameter
correlations
- Saving of data files complete with all model specifications.
- printing of data, graph and results.
- Online Help (under the apple menu) and a brief User Manual.
- includes example data files for most examples in two of the texts.

The programme is shareware with a fee of $AUD30 for individual copies or
$AUD150 or $US110 for site licences. ($1AUD is approximately $US0.73). Further
details in the "Read Me" file.
Unregistered copies are fully functional except that copying of graphs and
results and the recording of transcripts are disabled.

This upload is to amend the e-mail address and include a new Registration
form. There is no need for existing users of version 1.5.1 to upload this
version.

Subject: [*] Mass standardizing on Pentiums

There are a few things I would like to make clear. I think the note at
the end of this message is too harsh, to the point of being rude.
I do not endorse this kind of talk, nor does Moe or anyone else speak for me.

However, I do not think it is right for a state to impose "standards" such as
those to which he refers. I agree that the State of Massachusetts should not
only "allow" Macintosh computers, but they should also consider how to
encourage or at least better incorporate more of them or to take advantage of
this superior technology.

I have added to this message notes from various people (all included in
address field above) and some other useful information and addresses for the
people of our great state to look at.

I added the letter from Moe at the end of all this.

Subject: [*] Personality Test 2.0

This program takes an in-depth look at the real you. You'll discover what
people really think of you and insight into how you perceive the world. The
test offers a remarkably accurate analysis of your personality traits and
characteristics. It's a fun and entertaining test to take and in about an
15 minutes you'll know more about yourself than your analyst does!

The program contains one of the most intriguing, most fascinating and most
revealing tests ever produced. It probes your mind and gives an accurate
analysis of your most intimate personality traits. You'll find out your
strengths and weaknesses and areas that you may want to improve.

In order to analyze the real you, you'll answer a series of simple
questions about your likes and dislikes, and how you would describe
yourself. At the end of the test, you will be given a full-color visual
diagram of your personality which indicates, among other things, the brain
hemisphere dominance of your personality. Are you a left brain (analytical)
personality, or a right brain (creative) type? You can then view a complete
textual summary of your personality, and when you register the program, you
can also view the other personality types to see how you compare. You can
also save out the personality test data for later review.

The test is made up of four separate tests, each exploring a different
aspect of your personality. There is the General Personality test, the
Stress Indicator test, the Leadership Potential test and the Entreprenurial
Drive test. The General Personality test is a free test, but in order to
access the other 3 tests, you must send in the $17 shareware fee.

When you send in your fee, you will receive a password that will allow you
to access the three other tests along with the ability to browse all the
personality types.

Subject: [*] WWWStat4Mac-103

WWWStat4Mac is a simple application designed to process the log files from
httpd4Mac. It will also process log files from any application that outputs
log files in the 'common log format'. This includes UNIX web servers. So if
you have a UNIX web server you might be able to process the log files on
your Mac :-)

System Requirements
WWWStat4Mac requires system 7.0 or later. It would also be an advantage to
have Mac TCP v1.1.1 (or later ) and Internet Config v1.1 (or later)
installed to take advantage of some features.

You can download the latest version and also find more information about
WWWStat4Mac and at the following URL:
http://sodium.ch.man.ac.uk/pages/wwwstat4mac.html
You can see the kind of output produced by looking at my server statistics at
http://sodium.ch.man.ac.uk/statistics.html
WWWStat4Mac is distributed as a FAT-Binary which will run on either 68K or
PPC Macs.

Changes/Additions in version 1.0.3
Added a preference that allows the user to define the default file by using
the option map_default_to_file /filename.html. This makes it possible for
UNIX users to define the name that '/' gets mapped to. If an old version of
the prefs file exists and it has the map_default_to_home on then this
automatically calls map_default_to_file with the filename of /home.html

Enjoy!
Peter

Subject: [Q] Recomendations for "Rescuing your Mac from Disaster' Books?

Having had some nerve-wracking experiences with my Mac
recently I feel the need of a good book which tells the skilled
but non-techie user (without a background in computers or
computing) what useful things he/she can try when
his/her Mac decides to play 'hide-the-system', 'guess the
meaning of this obscure error number' and other such engaging
games. The ideal book would go far beyond the 'Mac-for-beginners'
level but would not be aimed exclusively at repair technicians
either. It should also - ideally - be readily available in this
part of the world. I have browsed through the 'Mac Bible' and
it seems to be a bit too close to the 'Mac-for-beginners' level
for my purposes.
Suggestions will be greatly appreciated -

I have a Performa 475 with System 7.1P3. As with Performas of

have a hard disk backup on floppies. I'd like to get an
inexpensive System 7.1P3 on CD.

Apple is charging $34.95 for the 7.1 CD, and $10 shipping on the
"free" update (.3) CD. I was hoping to get the CD's cheaper, and
use them as backups of some systems items, thus freeing space in
my large set of floppies for other stuff.

Of course, there's the Zip drive route.

Apple Menu Options 1.0.2/Submenus ON

Occurrence: The bug occurs only when the Mac is started with an audio or
data CD-ROM in the drive (but not a System CD-ROM).

Description: The Apple Menu Items folder contains aliases of folders on
disks other than the startup disk. Normally files in those folders appear
as submenus on the Apple menu, and can be launched from it. However, when
the Mac is started with an audio or data disk in the CD-ROM drive, this
no longer works. When chosen from the menu, instead of launching the
files Finder opens the System folder. This happens exclusively to files
on disks other than the startup disk. Opening AMO and toggling the
Submenus On option solves the problem.

This is a fairly subtle, though perfectly repeatable bug. It may be
related to the hardware configuration, to AMO, to the hard disk drivers,
to the CD-ROM extension, etc.

Has anybody else seen this bug?

I downloaded some binary files of Mac software from my local Internet

was unsuccessful to decode them with any of the tools that I have on hand.
I would appreciate any help in identifying the software and process needed
to reconstruct the text files to usable Mac apps.

Thank you,

A CHK error normally means that a program was compiled with range-checking
turned on, and the range check failed (e.g. the program created an array of
10 items and then tried to do something with the 11th (non-existent) item).
I say "normally means," because shipping software is usually compiled with
range-checking off, for better performance (supposedly the software
engineers made sure the program never *makes* out-of-range addressing
errors, and so the range-checking is not needed--*wink*wink*). That's why
a CHK error is not usually seen.

If you do see a CHK error, the most likely cause is corrupted software, but
watch out: if the dialog box says it's Finder that had the error, it very
often will be some control panel or extension that is the real culprit. If
you have the Install Me CD for System 7, you may want to begin by
re-installing System 7, since that's relatively low labor, but if it's a
control panel/extension, you probably will want to take the time to go
through Conflict Catcher (or the equivalent utility in Now Utilities) and
check for conflicts and/or corrupted extensions.

(1) Word/Excel/PageMaker should be a good combination. Use
Publish&Subscribe to put all the stuff together.

(2) Have the person who does the collation design a Word document
template, complete with style sheets (same thing for Excel, if you
use version 4 or 5). All users should use that template for their
documents, and should use styles for formatting. Users should make
sure not to (a) modify the style sheet in any way, and (b) do
any manual paragraph formatting. If this system is adhered to
consistently, collation in PageMaker should be much easier.

Hope this helps, Florin

I've had a similar problem with the Czech system disk images. Apparently
some bright mind at Apple didn't include the LFs in the binhexed files,
and Stuffit Expander 3.5.2 choked on them. I got around this by decoding
them with HQXer 1.1 from info-mac.

The only way I know: backup, re-format with HD SC Setup and copy back your
files. However, some versions of HD SC setup are only working with Apple
labeled drives (they check some of the ROM code). It may or may not work.

Good luck, Christian.

There is a utility called MacTCP Switcher that allows you to save
different settings and switch between them with a few mouse clicks
but you still have to reboot if you want to connect again with
different settings since MacTCP cannot be reset once it has been
opened.

>Have MacTCP DNR or MacTCP Prep got anything to do with this?

The settings are stored there. I think MacTCP is an ordinary
preference file. MacTCP DNR is for backward compatibility with
older programs.

Lanny, it was good advice a couple of years back, but Desktop Reset is
getting old. Actually, it was always a bit of a risk..where it worked it
was brilliant, but with certain system elements (the video card firmware
for Apple's Portrait Monitor comes to mind) it could wreck terrible havoc!
I've trashed my top copy a year or so back...

Somewhere in Info-Mac V13 I wrote: "Most of the time, booting with
opt-command down does repair these files well enough. But it _doesn't_
"rebuild" them. To rebuild the desktop, these files must be zapped,
stomped, trashed, and then a reboot automatically forces a complete desktop
rebuild. A thing called TechTool 1.09 does this (Sumex mirrors in
Disk..File), but a better way is to get a simple file
attributes editor like FileTyper or FileBuddy (same place), open your
volume/s, open each of the Desktop files and de-check the invisible box for
each. Then you can manually trash the two Desktop files and reboot." :-)

Subject: Icon[13] files in other languages

Hi,

I was wondering how I could change name of Icon files (you know, the ones
that are created when you paste a custom icon onto a folder). If I switch
to a different scripting system (Chinese, for example) it appears the the
name of these files is different; thus, the generic folder icon is
displayed instead of the custom one. I know that in the Spanish System the
Icon files are called "Icono." Thus, the question is, is there a way to
modify the System so that it recognizes Icon files as custom icons?

Thanks!

Subject: Info on 6220CD with HR 17" monitor

I would like to participate in some sort of forum where I can get
user and technical info on getting the bets Mac setup for my needs
for the least cost. I tried calling Apple with limited success.
This is what I want to do with the machine: High resolution video
editing 400+ lines of NTSC resolution, High resolution drawing
and 2D design with upgrade to 3D in future. CDROM and Kodac picture
CD capability. And of course all the other things computers are good
for like spread sheets, word processing and data bases. I have a
Pentium 66Mhz windows dos machine now and hate it, nothing works right
on it and I'm tired of resetting boards and com ports.

I think the following Mac would make me happy but can't find anybody
to set it up for me in the store or get confirmation that it will work.
Performa 6220CD with 16MB RAM for $2K, Apple 1710AV for $1K, LapisColor
LC2417 for $399 and an HP855C color printer for $440.

The LapisColor card fits in the PDS slot and allow the monitor to run
at 1024 by 768 32K color I am told, and millions of colors at 832 by 624.

I want to find a group that has tried to run these high resolution
monitors with the cheeper Macs and want to find out what to expect.
Is this a smooth process or will there be interface problems. Also is
there a better source for purchasing this equipment other than J&R Music
World, MacZone, Computer City etc?

Subject: Mac II Superdrive Upgrade

Tom,
instead of a superdrive, which can be a very expensive upgrade (~$300.00), why
not get a floptical. These allow you to have 21 MB Floptical disks, as well as
use 1.44 MB Mac, DOS, and ProDOS disks. You can also use 720 K DOS disks in
it.
Tulin is selling these for around $99.00. It is a SCSI device, so you don't
loose a NUBUS slot.
You might have luck, if you are set on the superdrive, by checking with Sun
Remarketing. Contact info follows.

If you want pictures, you need a color (or grayscale) monitor. If pictures
are disabled, b/w is working. But for Netscape, I don't know if it works
with an SE. Try it out, or use MacWeb or Mosaic. They should run on it.

Subject: nonlinear least squares plus scientific graphing

For most of my scientific career, I have been using my own Fortran
code to fit nonlinear functions or even sets of functions
to astronomical data. The advantage of this is that it is
straightforward to generate code defining the functions
for even the most complex of problems. The disadvantage is
that I/O and graphical requirements continually change,
and graphical analyses of results are extremely cumbersome
(presently I use PGPLOT on a Sun workstation).
What I would like to do is move the entire process off Unix
onto my PowerMac 8500. I figure that somewhere out there by
now there should be a software package which combines a
great nonlinear least squares package with a great scientific
plotting package. The problem is that there is a myriad of
packages advertising both graphical and nonlinear least squares
capabilities, but it is difficult to figure out how convenient
they are to use or how flexible they are.

I checked out a demo of IGOR. Although quite powerful, it is rather
complex to use, and lacks 3D graphing capabilities. Other
packages which might work OK are SigmaPlot, IDL, HiQ, or Mathematica,
but I know little about them at this point. What I need is
a nonlinear least squares package which allows great flexibility
in function definition with relative ease, and which can create
graphs in 2D with at least the effectiveness of
SuperMongo or PGPlot, and, in addition, in 3D. An ability
to readily identify each point in a plot, as well as an
ability to print a label next to each (such as a galaxy name)
would greatly ease the task of data exploration.

I would be grateful for any advice on where to find a good
nonlinear least squares / graphing package
for astronomical research. Even finding out that no such
package exists would be useful. If I get enough responses,
I will publish a summary.
