Subject: (C) DHCP and @home network

Dear Digest readers,
Well I spoke with a real Mac techie at @home's tier 2 tech support
who helped me set up DHCP. Surprise! I was earlier set up for
Static IP, and they changed my node to one where I can only obtain my
static IP over the node's address. The node's address is simply
the name of the first part of your @home domain name. So my machine
ID ended up being the node name, and Name server addresses were left
blank! Finally the Implicit Search Path Starting Domain name was
the regular domain name for the server. That Implicit path is found
in TCP/IP control panel's Advanced settings which are found by
changing the user mode in the Edit menu of the TCP/IP control panel.
And Connect Only when needed was turned off. Amazingly this works
on a serial based G3 Powerbook 233 with 512k backside and MacOS 9.
This is on Comcast@home. So despite some providers' belief that
they can't set up DSL and Cable on a Mac because of poor DHCP
support, they could just recommend the user upgrade to MacOS 9, and
work with that. It may just work!

There was even a time when Bell Atlantic said its DSL would only work
with an iMac whose machine address was already known.

I just thought I'd pass this along in case somebody else runs into a
high speed access provider who is having trouble with Mac DHCP
compatibility. Hope it works. I also found a way to set up a Mac
and a PC to share the same DSL line if anyone is interested.

Sincerely,
[email protected]

Subject: (Q) Remote disconnect script

I used to have an Applescript called something like "remote connection
disconnect script" which could be run from the "Automated Tasks" folder in
the Apple Menu. It just "hung up" the modem. I stupidly erased it and am
looking for a copy to replace it. Can someone send me a copy or tell me
where to find it?

No, it's not part of the "additional modem scripts" on the System Install
Disk (those are for support of specific brands of modems).

Subject: [*] DoubleTouch2.3.hqx

Title: DoubleTouch
Version: 2.3
=== Description ===
Using DoubleTouch, you can shade window by keyboard operation.
How to use is very easy. It's only pressing key twice as double-click.

=== Other minimum requirements ===
PowerMac / PowerBook / iMac / iBook
Mac OS 8.1 or later

=== What's new ? ===
- OtherWindowsKey -
This key is for shading all windows except front window.

- CleanDesktop -
CleanDesktop is changed from "Finder Option".
DoubleTouch after clicking desktop, you can do the following.
- Shade all Finder's windows
- Hide all visible applications except Finder
It is useful when you find icon on desktop !
CleanDesktop has option to show hidden application by
CleanDesktop.

=== Fixed Bugs ===
- A wrong message -
When using non-registered copy of DoubleTouch vers2.2.2 over 10 days,
DoubleTouch displays a message. But this mesage is wrong.
This message is "DoubleTouch failed to remve codes".
It is essentially right that DoubleTouch shows message for
non-registered user in this case.

=== Changes ===
- HoldKey's work -
Until vers 2.2.2, if you set HoldKey, you have to press when you
use DoubleTouch. For example, it is needed when you want to shade
all windows by AllWindowsKey.

Since this version (2.3), if you set HoldKey, this key is just needed
when you shade front window.
i.e. When you use AllWindowsKey or OtherWindowsKey with DoubleTouchKey,
you don't have to press HoldKey if you set it.

- Remove DialogOption -
It was to shade windows behind dialog. I feel it is not useful,
so I removed it.

- No trap patch -
DoubleTouch don't have any trap patches. :-)

Subject: [*] eMerge 1.6.2 -- Customerize your e-mail

You've got to work hard these days to find your customers, and you've
got to work even harder to hold onto them. Especially now with your
competition just a click away on the Internet.

Sure, you've got your website broadcasting to anyone who wanders into
range, and you probably send the odd announcement out to everyone on
your mailing list, but what are you doing about the personal service
that gives everyone exactly what they need and keeps your customers
coming back?

Customerize your e-mail

eMerge lets you move beyond sluggish e-mail clients, cumbersome
distribution lists, and impersonal list servers by combining the power
of bulk e-mail with the sophistication of e-mail merge. Product
announcements. Passwords. Invoices. eMerge sends its messages directly
to each customer, one at a time, personally and privately...and fast!

Import any mailing list

And with eMerge 1.6, Galleon Software has made the transition to
"customerized" e-mail easier than ever with an improved import function
that allows you to use the mailing lists from every major Macintosh
e-mail client and list server. In fact, now it's dead easy to import
just about any data file into eMerge, change the order of your fields,
and even assign new form-letter variables on the fly.

Drag-and-drop addressing

eMerge 1.6 also introduces drag-and-drop addressing that lets you drag
any addresses you find right into your eMerge mailing list, from a
regular text file or directly from an e-mail message header, if your
client supports it. All this allows eMerge to handle a single form
letter as easily as it sends off a general announcement. Keep a
collection of letters on file for a quick and personal response to all
of your customers' common questions. It's easy, it's fast, and it's
probably the only way you'll ever stay on top of all that e-mail you're getting.

Stuff your attachments

And so you don't clog up your customers' mailboxes, eMerge 1.6 now works
with Aladdin System's StuffIt Engine to automatically compress message
attachments before sending them out.

To make the customization of your message even easier, eMerge 1.6 also
includes a collection of new variable crunching functions that allow you
to move values around in a customer's record, define and modify specific
fields, or even generate unique serial numbers for everyone you specify.

to switch and launch applications, and drag-and-drop files on
applications. Because it only uses the menu bar, unlike other
utilities, it will never obscure or be obscured by other windows.

New features on version 1.1.0 includes:
1) Detailed controls over the position, spacing, sorting order and
appearances
of the icons on the menu bar.
2) Add stationary applications by drag and dropping applications or
aliases.
3) You can suppress displaying certain types of apps, such as control
panels.
4) Compatible with Apple's appearance themes and Kaleidoscope.
5) Stationary applications on volumes other than the start-up disk,
including
removable media, will appear as the media are mounted.

The version 1.1.1 fixes a few bugs. Please see the What's New file.

Requires System 7.1 or later including OS-8 and 9 with a 68K
or PPC processor.

Shareware fee: $10.

Subject: [*] TimeZonesHC 1.03 / HyperCard stack time in ALL timezones includingDST

This HyperCard stack by Oscar van Vlijmen can show the time in ALL known
time zones, taking the daylight savings time (summertime) into account.
Enter a time, set a few time zones, and this stack will compute the correct
time in the set time zones. From base time to zone time and vice versa.
If you enter a date as well, the correct daylight savings time corrections
(summertime) are taken into account.
This version can show up to 12 timezones simultaneously.

This stack is a Macintosh application of the TZ UNIX timezone database, but
only for the current timezone information, not the historical information.
This stack is updated from TZdata2000c.

What is so special about this stack?
* You can find information about ALL known time zones of the world. The
database has 426 zone cards.
* ALL known information about daylight savings time (summertime) is
included.
* Calculations are made with a precision of one minute, even in the case of
a transition from summer time to winter time (or vice versa) right now.
* The information is extremely up to date.
* You can study and change all information yourself, nothing is hidden.

Freeware; not to be used for commercial applications; not on CD-ROM's.

Dear all,

I want to burn my own audio CD from my Mac. I have a lot of records and want
to convert them into CDs. Could somebody tell me what equipment do I need to
have, including both hardware and software? Is my legacy PowerMac 7600/132
suffice?

Thank you.

Subject: [Q] ixTV troubles

Hi Folks,

Wouldn't you know, the day after ixMicro shut its doors, my nearly new
ixTV card starts having troubles.

I installed the card a few months ago. On the same day, I had cable
service installed in the house. I noticed that the card didn't seem to
work (_lots_ of static) although the TV in the other room (working of a
split of the same feed) displayed a fine picture. The technician then
went outside and installed a ground. After that (and possibly
coincidentally), my card was working fine.

Everything was ok until I had new electric service put into the house.
The power was off for a day and the cable ground was disconnected. I
again lost my ixTV picture to fuzz and snow while the other TV continued
to work fine. The cable company came out and ran a completely new line
from the street into the house and installed a new ground. Still no clear
picture, just a few channels with a ghosted image and static in the audio.

To diagnose the problem, I did try swapping cables (no change in picture
quality) and hooking up a working TV to the computer's cable feed
(excellent picture on the TV). So it seems to be something with the ixTV
card.

Other important information: I do receive a fairly decent picture on our
only local channel when switching to "antenna" input via software (this
is physically the same input as cable, just switched through software
settings.) A separate video input source on the same card produces
flawless on-screen images from a VCR and a digital camera.

The cable company proclaims this a customer equipment problem, but I'm
not entirely convinced of that. I've tried everything I can think of, and
I'm left completely stumped and frustrated.

Any cable or ixMicro gurus out there? Any suggestions will be gratefully
accepted.

TIA,

Rob

Subject: Apple posts DVD FAQ

Dear Digest readers,
As I'm sure many of you are aware, many people have had trouble with
software encoding DVD drives. If you are among them, Apple has
written a page just for you;

http://til.info.apple.com/techinfo.nsf/artnum/n58383

It should come in handy when answering questions about DVD problems.

Hope this helps.

Subject: re> Japanese and Eudora

Luke asked about enabling Japanese in Eudora.

Yes, you can do it. You will need Japanese Plug In, available on info-mac
(where else?). This used to be shareware, but last I checked it became
freeware. Put a copy of the plug-in in your Eudora Stuff folder and you're
ready to read and write email in Japanese (once you change your font
of course).

While you're at it, you may want to grab a coy of MailKanjiFixer too.
This will let you read those notes that are already in your Eudora in box.
Also freeware, also on info-mac, both by Hide Itoh.
