Dear Digest readers,
It appears another company is in need of a good Mac programmer.
They make a great webpage stats program. They claim nobody would
develop the software for the Mac. I say baloney. There are enough
good programmers who read the digest, I'm sure one would love to add
a webpage stats program to their r‰sum‰. Please somebody convince
these guys otherwise:

I question the idea of *automatically* forwarding any piece of mail
that doesn't match some set to abuse@*.
What if I like one of abrody's posts and want to compliment him/her?
What if I have a followup question? I'm probably not in the blessed
group, so such a filter would automatically send a complaint to my
ISP. That seems bad.
My personal suggestion would be to use spamcop.net. Very effective
filtering, simple reporting [headers are analyzed to determine the
true source, and the complaint mail is generated automatically],
reasonable price.
I'm just a satisfied customer.

I am assuming that using the option-command method during bootup has
not worked for you. If it hasn't, try deleting the desktop files so
your Mac will have to rebuild them. (This is instead of attempting to
rebuild what may be a corrupted file.) A utility such as File Buddy
(available on info-mac) can be used to make these files visible
(using FileBuddy, be sure to include searching for invisible files)
and then you can drag them to the trash and empty the trash. Reboot
and the desktop will rebuild.
BTW-there are 2 desktop files to delete. Desktop DB and Desktop DF.

Subject: Another mute G3
I've been following the thread about the mute G3. I too have a G3, this
one is uprated with a MaxPowr 500 MHz card. I'm running Mac OS 8.1. It
recently went mute (I can't remember when exactly it did this). I tried
plugging in a set of external speakers this morning but this made no
difference. I can hear the hard disk chatter when it should make a sound
- so it's trying to do it. I trashed the sound prefs and the Sound
Control Panel and restarted - no difference. (The replacement Control
Panel was copied from similarly specced G3 which works OK).
Anyone got any ideas?

I would like to switch from my old Windows based computer to a new

JIM HUSKEY: You might want to check out DataViz's MacLink Delux. I haven't
seen the box recently, but at one time, it came not only with good software
but the appropriate cabling for someone to connect a PC (e.g., laptop) to a
Mac desktop box and "simply" drag-copy files onto the Mac. This is, as Cyrus
Toton points out, only useful for data files. While you can move apps and so
on, they will need to run under emulation. The DataViz software is also
useful for converting data (e.g. Word to AppleWorks and so on.) But
otherwise, Mac apps are generally cross-platform compatible and backward
compatible (e.g. current Excel versions will open spreadsheets created with
the "same" version (but not newer versions) of Excel and of course "any"
spreadsheet created by an earlier version of Excel).
If you have trouble converting your PC files to Mac, you often can
save files by opening them in Word, which will open "just about anything."
Even TIFF files, though of course that's generally a silly thing to do. But
Word at least will allow you to open files and save the ASCII data, which
you can then reformat, and so on.
I've also found that using something like PageMaker, with the correct
import filter, does wonders for converting files. I've even used it to
filter out modem garbage. Place files and then export the files as, e.g.
Word docs or RTF.

I've written the info Mac about this before, but it's really starting to
get me down.
To recap: Whenever I double click a document file, I get an error
message that says "the application 'User Dictionary 1' can not be
opened. The file is either missing or corrupted".
The issue here is if I do search, find User Dictionary1 and drag it to
the trash, the next time I double click a file I get an error message
with a new "can't open App..' but this time it lists a different app.
The only way I can open ANY text file is to use the OPEN USING function
on contextual menus. I can open the files this way using Simple Text/BB
Edit/AppleWorks etc.
A simple double click doesn't open these files.
What do you suppose has defaulted my machine to this odd behavior.
What I've Done:
Zapped/Rebuilt/Run TTP/Norton's/changed my text file type and creators
to BBedit/Clean Installed my OS. Nothing seems to have helped.
All I want is to have my -double click -to -open -my- text- files
-back!!!!!
I have appreciated all the responses the last time I posted this. I
tried all the advice and unfortunately nothing has changed this
behavior. If anyone has any new ideas, PULEEZ let me know what you
think.
