Subject: (A) Data integrity on PC Zip disks
Dear Digest readers,
Formerly it was posted that some data on PC Zip disks got corrupted
when it was saved to them from a Mac. PC formatted zip disks have a
distinct icon compared to Mac formatted zip disks which is obvious
when you insert one. Make sure before saving any data to zip disks
to name the files the normal 8.3 PC naming conventions if you want to
make sure they maintain their integrity. If somebody has done that
and still found data gets corrupted from QuarkExpress and other
programs I'd like to hear about it.
Also I might add that Zip disks are not for archival storage. They
are for data exchange only. Zip disks are susceptible to dust and
magnetism in ways that CD-R disks are not.

Subject: (A) Noisy 250 K Zip drives
Recently I complained here about the noisy whine of the 250K Zip
drives. I found that I could remove most of them problem by setting
the Iomega control panel to put the drive to sleep after one minute
of idle time. This has made using the drive much more comfortable.

Tile-iT Icons is an application that use the custom Icons of System 7.X
to display pictures or text on the desktop or in any windows. Tile-iT
takes any PICT from the clipboard, break it into 'Tiles', convert those tiles
to icons, assign those icons to documents and finally arrange those
documents so that they touch each other. In other words, a Tile-iT
frame of 3 x 3 icons is composed of 9 documents each having a custom
icon representing
a portion of the original picture.
Tile-it now produce those 32 bits 'icns' resources so that you can
display pictures in thousand of colors. Tile-it is also the most
userfriendly of these kind of application.
This is a major update and a lot of bugs have been fixed. There is a
rebuild option available in case you loose the alignment of the tiles.
This has been tested up to PowerPc G4 running MacOS 9.0.4. It need MacOS
7.1 to run properly.

The USB Overdrive is a universal USB driver that handles all USB
mice, trackballs, joysticks and gamepads from any manufacturer
and lets you configure them either globally or on an
application-specific basis. It reads all kinds of wheels,
buttons, switches and controls and supports scrolling, keyboard
emulation, launching and complex macros as well as all the usual
stuff like clicking, control-clicking and so forth. The USB
Overdrive can easily handle several USB devices at once- I have
two mice, one trackball, two joysticks and one gamepad connected
to the same iMac, and each of them comes from a different
manufacturer.
Because each control in each device can be fully configured, the
USB Overdrive lets you use any joystick or gamepad with any
game, including the ones that don't support Apple's
InputSprockets. You can map your joystick movements and buttons
to the keyboard and mouse to make the game believe you're
playing on the keyboard, and you can do this mapping separately
for each game so that it's immediately available as soon as the
game is launched.
For games that already use InputSprockets, the USB Overdrive
quietly gives control to the device-specific configuration
panels provided by the manufacturer, or to the generic ones
provided by Apple with Mac OS 9 or the latest Game Sprockets.
The mouse settings allow you to speed up your daily tasks by
assigning useful actions to all the extra buttons and wheels in
your USB mouse. You'll typically want to assign a control-click
to the right button for easy contextual menu acces, and enable
document scrolling if your mouse has a scrolling wheel.
The Control Panel includes an active help feature that explains
each command and option as you move the cursor around.

- Added visual cursor feedback when Auto Scroll is active.
- Fixed a conflict with the Classic environment under Mac OS X

New G4/500 running OS 9.0.4 that sometimes will not sleep when Sleep
is chosen from the Special menu. If you reboot the machine, you can
immediately put it to sleep. Computer is on home network and drives
from other machines are sometimes mounted. Any ideas?

Subject: Mac OS 9.0.3 & Printer Problem
Using a new iMac 400 DV and OS 9.0.3,, I am having trouble with an Epson
500 printer and a KeySpan Twin Serial Adapter. At start-up the Mac refuses
to recognise the connected printer, stating the port is already in use. My
cure is to disconnect the USB plug and reconnect it. Keyspan have now
stated that the fault is with OS 9.0.3, and can be corrected by upgrading
to 9.0.4.
Problem is the size of the dowmload, about 12 MB. Is there any way of
getting the upgrade on CD-ROM?
I am currently in France, visiting UK shortly.

My SE (1986) came with version 4.x (iirc) so you should have no problem.
For what it's worth, version 6.0.7 was probably the best before
System 7. Can you run that?

Sure! Original 128K conceivably? 512K definitely; Mac Plus
absolutely; SE will run it nicely; not sure about II series or SE/30.
The retro Mac Classic, probably; You can also run it on any modern
Mac using vMac!
If you're going to run it natively on your SE, don't forget to grab a
copy of Switcher, the MultiFinder for system 4!

I did not find any record about a system 4.x on Apple's site. There
is a "jump" from 2.0.1 to 5.0.
