We have used apple talk for years and it has work fine. Now we have a =
canon copier/fax/printer. The canon has apple talk software in it .the =
trouble is that it need a rj45 plug. I try cutting the 8 min din off the =
apple net phone box to add a rj45 plug but the pinout is not the same as =
the Mac serial port. Need help. Anyone.

Dear Digest readers,
Well the answer to my question came from an unlikely source!
NCSA-Telnet has the most wonderful easter egg. Go to the Edit menu,
select preferences, and one of the submenu items is FTP Server. You
then edit the preferences to set up your Mac as an ftp server.
Completely free, and speaks standard Unix FTP commands. And here all
the time I thought all NCSA Telnet was, was an ftp client and telnet
client. One of the oldest Mac applications happens to still work
under MacOS 9.0.4 as something I never thought it could do.

System Requirements
This version of Project X requires a PowerPC-based Mac OS computer, or a
68K Mac OS based computer with a floating point unit, one megabyte of RAM
and Netscape Navigator version 1.1 or later.
Installation
The folder called "Project X Data Files" can reside in the preferences
folder or in the Project X application folder. If the data files are
missing from one of these locations, the X space will be empty.
If you are having problems installing or getting started, please send us
a bug report through our Bug Form online at

Incompatibilities & Other Issues
Project X cannot access compressed data files. If you use DiskDoubler,
or a similar application, please make sure that the data files will not
be compressed.
If you move or rename the Project X data files, the X-space will appear
empty. If this occurs, return the Project X Data Files folder to its
original position or rename the files.

Subject: can't get scanner to work with ibook
i have an ibook 0s9 tried to hook up my umax astra 1220 scanner , i
downloaded the vistascan 3.5.1 software and everytime i start up computer it
crashes with this software.
problem is i need to get this scanner to work in order to daisy chain my zip
drive (to the scanner and the scanner to the ibook) because they are not usb
products
i am using a microteck adapter to convert these into usb
does this mean i have to go out and buy a new scanner and zip drive
sue

I started seeing this type of behavior (and even longer stalls) on my
Power Computing machine after I hooked a Jaz drive into the SCSI
chain. It seems to have something to do with the drive spinning up
but no bets here. Do you have Zip or Jaz drives somewhere in the
setup? If I remember correctly, I've seen this on all OS 8.x
versions I've used.

I seem to recall an auto DiskFirdt Aid Check on startup as an
configurable option in DFA's preferrences. I haven't used 9 yet (just
8.6) though you might wnat to check out MacFix-it's advice.
Then again the following may be correct

Just got the Logitech QuickCam VC USB to install on an iMAC (slot loading,
350 MHz)
The bundled CU-seeME software does not work on this model, and upgrade is
only available at full price. One can download the free Cornell University
version of CU-seeME, which does work but is more limited in features.

I have a problem downloading software from the info-mac archive and others.
When I try to open some program I downloaded and decompressed with Stuffit,
I get an error message -39, and sometimes error message -199.
I am using an iMac with OS 8.5.1, and Netscape Communicator 4.6
