Oops! I forgot one last question-
Assuming that I can join all 4 drives into 1 unit, is there a hardware
(or software) solution to make them all look like 1 2GB drive? Or must
it always appear to be 4 500MB drives?

You could try They have most init strings
for most modems.
I know that apple has an unsupported Modem Script Maker somewhere in its
support area under Mac OS Communications Unsupported I believe. I made
one for my GV teleport a long time ago when I wasn't happy with the
throughput on my 33.6 modem. It was several years ago but is definitely
in one of the unsupported areas. Perhaps a search in the Apple support
area for ModemScript or Script Generator etc may locate it for you. HTH

Subject: Action Utilities GoMac 2.0.3 buggy
Dear Digest readers,
Action Utilities GoMac 2.0.3 has a very serious problem. While being
a nice alternative to the windows 95/98/NT toolbar on the Mac, if the
toolbar is active you can't quit from many open applications. This
is regardless of if auto-hide is enabled or not. If I try to quit
from many applications, the cursor starts to twirl a clock, and then
"The Finder has unexpectedly quit" error appears on my screen. I
even tried renaming the GoMac extension to ZGoMac to no avail. So
load order of INITs doesn't matter in this case. I've tried e-mailing
action utilities but all I get is an automated reply. Turn off the
toolbar, or disable the extension, the error doesn't happen in the
same programs.
Please somebody help.

Apple CD Audio Player is a control application, but there are other means
of playing audio tracks. One of them is the auto-play option listed in
QuickTime Settings, which causes an audio CD to start playing whenever you
insert it.
If you want to use only the CD Audio Player (a good idea; viruses spread by
things that autostart themselves without user intervention), turn all
AutoPlay options off in QuickTime Settings Control Panel; launch the Audio
Player first and click the "play" button to start playing audio tracks.

Certainly. In October of 1998, Akif sent me the source code for Easy
View, and I posted it to Info-Mac. Anyone who wants to update it - go
right ahead (I don't remember the license terms offhand, but they
were along the lines of public domain).

The solution is to change the HTTP HELPER in Internet Config and then
to choose "Read from Internet Config" in Eudora's Miscellaneous
Settings.

I need to access a site using Microsoft's JVM (rather than Apple's)
with Internet Explorer, but even though I set the preferences to
Microsofts Java Virtual Machine, whenever I access the site it
switches to the Apple MRJ and then I get errors. I'm using IE 4.5.

I understand that the Windoze world has programs such as DIRT, which place
hidden execs that record keystrokes, etc. and send them back out as an
encrypted file under cover of other internet traffic.
Given the hackers about us, and the abyssmal lack of privacy today, is
there a program that could record the filenames, size, etc. and location
placed, of all files transmitted into my Mac from an outside source and all
files transmitted out to the net exclusive of those dilberately sent by the
computer operator?
Is there one that would act similar to a virus scanner and allow you to
view or at least yes or no an outgoing request? Or one that would trap the
info leading back to the originator?
It would be especially useful to have a folder into which is placed copies
of everything sent so that an anlysis could be made.

Hmm?? I use an extended keyboard and mouse with my Wallstreet all the time
except on the train. At the moment, prompted by curiosity caused by the
above post, I am typing on keyboard #1 of 3 external daisychained ADB
keyboards, the third of which has an external mouse hanging off the end of
it. Keyboard #2 working fine...Keyboard#3 doing okay as well...Built-in
PowerBook keyboard works...mouse is OK...trackpad works...

Subject: transparent backgrounds for desktop icons
Hello,
Does anyone know of a program or a way to make the background of the
text of desktop icons transparent? I like to use photographs as my
desktop, and I just hate the look of the greyed-out text "boxes". On my
PC at work I have a neat freeware app that does just this, but I have
not been able to find a similar program (or setting) that will
accomplish this. I am using a beige G3, and OS 8.6. Kaleidoscope really
doesn't seem to be the answer either. I quite comfortable with ResEdit,
so if that is my only solution, then that's OK as well.

Subject: turning int. HD into ext. HD and Linux
Hello,
I have 4 500 MB internal HD's that I would like to combine into 1
external HD scsi device. They are all Mac HFS drives. I don't know
anything about building such a thing, so I would appreciate any advice
at all. and I have a number of questions. At the very least, I would use
it as a back-up for my main HD. At the very most, please see below for
my Linux plan. But first of all the basics-
1. Can I do this? Is it OK to run 4 hd's off of 1 power supply?
2. Can I daisy chain 4 hds together like this? ( There must be hd to hd
cables?)
3. What do I need, and need to know to do this? (I've swapped HDs and
installed RAM, so I know how to be careful, and how to plug things in.)
I also would appreciate knowing if there are brands to either look for
or stay away from. I know that I need the power suppy (but what wattage
or other details?), cables, mounting brackets and a box. I feel that I
am quite capable of doing this if it is really a reasonable thing to do.
4. Is this a really dumb idea? ie-dumb, it simply won't work; or dumb,
that I should have a professional do this?
5. I assume that I can reformat them as HFS+ drives (if they are to be
used for back-up purposes)? I mean, is there a difference in the actual
HD media for HFS vs HFS+?
However, my ideal plan is to combine all 4 units into 1 box, and then
install Linux on it. Right now, I only wish to use this "Linux box" as a
self-training machine (I know some unix, and have signed up for the
unix/linux course at ZDU). But there would be no networking, except to
my Mac which is a beige, 300- G3. It wouldn't be used as a server or
anything. I'm hoping that I can do this so that I do not have to
reformat my main HD, but if I must, or if this seems to be a really bad
idea, then I can use the external drives as a back-up, re-format the
main HD, and then continue. I've joined the linuxppc-users-digest list,
so I'm lurking and learning about the linux side of things there as
well.
I hope I've explained everything well enough, and I appreciate any and
all feed back- especially if these sound like dumb ideas! I really trust
your collective wisdom...I will summarize my findings for all of you.

Subject: Weird problem with letter 'd'
In Eudora (4.2) every time I type the letter 'd' it opens the control panel
folder!!!!!!!!!
To type 'd' I have to open and use PopChar pro. I tried closing Euxora and
restarting it but no difference. So far I don't know whether it affects any
other applications but it also happens when
I'm in the Finxer and type the letter 'd'. It does not happen if I type a
uppercase 'D'!
PowerMac5500; OS8.6.
Any suggestions that could point me in a direction?
