That means 8x write speed, 20x read speed. Rewriteable drives are
described as AxBxC, where A is the write speed for CD-R, B is the
write speed for CD-RW, and C is the maximum read speed for anything.

Everyone I know who has purchased a Yamaha drive has had great
results. I don't know of any drives to avoid, per se.

Many CDRs from various vendors are the same mechanism in different
boxes. For example, a popular CD-RW mechanism right now is the
Yamaha 4416, which is a 4x4x16 CD-rewriteable. APS, MegaHaus,
ClubMac, and several other vendors all sell this same Yamaha drive in
their own box and with their own software bundle, so in an situation
like that the differentiating factor is the quality of the case, the
bundled software/cables/disks, and perhaps the support provided by
the vendor.
Many of these drives come bundled with Toast. Some come with Mac and
PC software. Some come with varying quantities of blank media.
Toast for Mac sells at retail from anywhere from $65 to $99, blank
CD-R media ranges from free-after-rebate to a buck or two a disk;
CD-RW media for $3-$10/disk, so keep that in mind when you evaluate
bundle pricing [i.e. a drive that comes with 5 CD-RW disks, but costs
$100 more than another, isn't a deal since you're paying $20/apiece
for those five disks]
As far as features, the most important one as far as I'm concerned is
a large read buffer, which can help prevent burning coasters if your
hard drive lags a bit at any time.
It may be a good idea to check out the Toast "Supported Devices"
listing or read me file [which I believe are available at Adaptec's
site]; those docs may contain caveats related to specific drives.

low pricing.

Yes. No. Maybe. Some drives apparently have trouble with some
types of media. I've had great results with Maxell gold media; some
people describe it as crap. All my machines read the blue-dye media
CDs [such as Verbatim] with no problems. Some people can't read them
at all.
What you'll want to do is try a few different types and find one that
works with your drive. I've not found a type of media that flat out
won't work with any of the three CD-Rs I use on a regular basis
[Plextor 4x20, JVC 2x4, Pinnacle 1x2], but enough people do have
trouble that they can't all be delusional.

There is Spellwell Plus which interact with Eudora Pro and Netscape and
even Explorer. However, I do not know if it can spellcheck in Newswatcher
or Outlook. Perhaps, you could check the Macworld archives for hints on
spelling checker. I have seen some over the years.

Eudora Pro 4.0 has a feature called Personalities. You can configure it get
mail from more than 1 email address.

Maybe Newer Technology's SpellTools?

What does "doesn't work right" mean, exactly?
In any case, there's something else causing this problem. Eudora
works perfectly on my two machines running 8.5.1 [PowerCenter Pro
180, PowerCenter 250]

Greetings:
I have a friend that has a Powerbook 5300ce that he wants to start using for
business travel. While I have a lot of experience with desktop Macs, my
knowledge of Powerbooks is somewhat lacking. It currently has 32Mb running
System 7.x. He wants to add a PC card modem and bring it up to a current
version of the OS. However, before I tell him to buy 8.5.1, I was wondering
if this 117MHz 603e machine can run it at a reasonable level of responsiveness.
His primary usage will be Office 98 and Navigator/Explorer and some email
program.
Can anyone offer a feel for how this setup will work?
As far as modems, he is looking at buying a Performantz PC card modem from
MacZone. Any good, bad, indifferent experiences? Any other suggestions?

Assuming these sounds are in System 7 Sound format...*
Quit all apps.
Drag the new sounds to the System Folder's icon [not the open window
of the System Folder]. Answer "Yes" when the Finder asks you if it
should install them into the System file. [If you don't get this
question, the sounds weren't System 7 Sounds; retrieve them from the
System Folder, convert them, and try again]
Now open Monitors and Sound and your new alert sounds will be listed.
*If they're not System 7 Sound format, there are many tools in the
info-mac archive that can convert them.

Open the folder of interest. Make sure it's set to View as List.
Select "View Options" from the View menu and check "Calculate Folder
Sizes".

This work "locally", only that folder.

I think you drop them into the System suitcase inside your System folder.
Then access them from the Monitors and Sounds control panel.

In the Finder, go to the View menu. Choose "View by List" and then you can
choose an Option to "Calculate Folder Sizes" - it will be something like
that. I'm running OS 8.5.1 and have forgotten 8.1 already! But it's
something like that.

It may work to go into Page Setup in one document, set it up the way you
like, then hold Option while pressing "Okay". It should give you a dialog
asking if you want to make that setup your default.

Hi folks.
I was thrilled when my new G3/300 arrived. I took advantage
of Apple's free memory offer for educational institutions and as such
have 96Meg available. However...Aside from having to replace a bad
power supply, a bad keyboard (' elp me t ere is no " "!), and a bad
floppy drive, I have had terrible crashing problems with minimal
non-system software installed. Conflict Catcher 8.0.4 suggests that
if I turn off networking I'll be fine, but that really isn't an
option for me. I have reinstalled 8.5.1 a couple of times (clean,
and disposing of "previous" folders) and get crashes with 8.5.1 plus
Office 98 (updated for sys 8.5) plus stuffit deluxe 5.0.2. I was
curious when I saw Al Bloom mention "Stuffit going Dixie while I have
Microsoft Office Manager active. Interactions that don't seem
possible, but that are very real." I believe he was referring to
older versions of both packages, but was not sure.
My shaggy G3 question: Is it possible that our lousy WAN (lots of
problems at both the University of TN and the VA medical center)
could be causing my machine to crash but not others? Is the
networking arm of my 300MHz G3 any different than say a 233 or 266MHz
G3 of which there are a dozen or so working around here with 8.5.1?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First, make sure you're using the correct PPD for this printer; it's
possible that you're using a metric PPD that has A4 set as the
default.
Next, try deleting the LAserWriter Preferences, which you'll find in
the Preferences folder.
If those don't do it, open Page Setup. Select US Letter, then hold
down Option and click "OK". You'll be asked if you want to save this
setting as the default.

Using LaserWriter 8, choose a standard configuration in any app an then
click
OK holding Option. You should get a dialog confirming the new defaults.

You need to startup with extensions off. Simply drag the sound files
(i assume they are system 7 snd files!?) to the System File in the
root level of the System Folder and restart. Then go into the Sounds
control panel and choose which ones you want to use.

Any spell checker that allows adding apps to it's user base will work.
SpellCatcher (Casady&Greene) is a good one. I use it with IE and it
works seamlessly.

You'll find what you're looking for in the drop down menu 'EDIT' on
the menu bar. Choose view options and that's where you can change the
Finder display info.
