Subject: [A] Audio -> AIFF
I asked in a previous info-mac about my troubles in converting
audio CD tracks to AIFF. (Symptom: glitches and popping noises
in the resulting file.)
Here's the solution to my problem:
make sure the CD rom drive is of a high enough speed. I still have
an old 2X drive, and apparently that one was not able to sustain
the required data rate. Toast (the new 3.5 version! check it out!)
reported buffer underruns. And these happened even in simulation
mode, so it's really the reading, not hte writing that's the problem.
Using my CD-R unit (the $500 model from APS) as a 6X reader
made all my problems go away. Unfortunately, now I can't use the
Toast feature of copying directly from audio CD to CD-R until
I upgrade my CD rom drive which I'm loath to do.

Subject: Desktop rebuild / SCSI problems with 7.5.5
I have a PowerMac 7100/66 running system 7.5.5 with an external CD-ROM
tower (drive and hard disk) for cutting CD-ROMS. This configuration causes
me two problems.
1. Ever since system 7.5.3 I have been unable to achieve a consistent
data transfer rate for CD-ROM production. This has necessitated the
(re)installation of the original system 7.1.2 on the external drive and
booting from that when cutting CDs. Despite many months of investigation
there is no other solution to the problem. I am using ANUBIS 2.54 for
external drive formatting and it is reportedly SCSI 4.3 compliant.
2. I am unable to rebuld the desktop when booting from system 7.5.5
using either the cmd-option startup keys or by Norton Disc Doctor 3.2
'Rebuld desktop' menu option. I can only rebuild ther desktop when booting
with system 7.1.2.
Any thoughts welcome on either of these problems.

Subject: DOH! Zip drive hangs system on copy!
Copying files to a Zip cartridge is causing my system to hang up. The
finder window shows the copy to be started, it reads the source then as
it is writing to the Zip, it just stops. The yellow light stays on, the
finder reports "writing to [name of Zip cartridge]" and nothing happens.
This usually happens on larger files or folders. Though it can happen
from time to time with tiny files. There's no way out other than
"control+commmand+shutdown." (I've tried "command+option+escape" with
no luck.) I'm running 7.6.1, Iomega Driver 5.0.3 (comes with the 7.6.1.
CD) on a 7300/200. Any Clues??

It depends on his email client.
I use Eudora, and in the "Checking Mail" preference screen there's an
option to "Leave mail on server for days".
If this is checked, and I check mail, the mail is left on the server, so if
I check again at home, I'll get the same messages.
I imagine Emailer has a similar preference. I have no idea about Netscape
Mail or Microsoft Mail & News.

We got a brand-new HP LaserJet 6MP (IrDa port) in our lab, my PB 1400 uses
the IrTalk protocol. Is there a way to "upgrade" the PowerBook to IrDa, so
that both understand each other? Using drivers developed for the PB3400
(this port is IrDa) series? Or is it a problem of hardware?

I believe it means that the Mac tried to call a Toolbox routine (you know,
the system routines that draw windows, operate Quicktime, listen to the
keyboard, handle networks, and almost everything else you can think of) that
wasn't there. This would happen if you are running an old version of the
System Software, or don't have installed certain extensions that you need.
See the documentation that came with the software to see what the minimum
version of the system it requires is, or what system extensions it needs. Or
it might just be a bug in the software.

You didn't say what email program your friend was using, but in Eudora
(and probably in Emailer) there is definitely a box you can check in the
Settings menu which says "leave mail on server". If this box is checked,
the mail won't be deleted. However, the use of this is not recommended
generally because you can forget that you haven't deleted mail manually,
and your email box can fill up as a result.

Subject: Type 11 errors
I have a user with a PowerMac 8100/80 with 40mb RAM and two external third
party drives formatted with Anubis 2.54 (SCSI 4.3 compliant), running
system 7.5.5 who frequently gets type 11 errors. By frequently I mean once
every hour or even more often. They can occur when switching between
applications using the application menu (typically only running word 5.1,
Eudora 1.5.1, Netscape 3.0.1). This morning it happened in this way and
flagged up a Microsoft Word error. He also runs some image processing
software but not multi tasking due to these type 11 errors. He has
abandoned virtual memory as it only made matters worse.
I have tried reinstalling a clean system, reformatting drives etc but still
the errors keep coming. He has similar set up at home but seldom if ever
gets any errors at all. The finder heap is set to 256K using finder heap
fix
Is this a hardware or system software problem? Or could it be application
software? Could something be loose?
Any help appreciated.

All I know is that 0000000F means that it is a software problem and that
your harware should be OK. Try booting from a external system disk, it
should give a new life to you SE. It worked with my LC II when my system
got corrupted.
