Overview
--------
Mews (for Mail and News) is a Hypercard stack for reading and posting both
mail and news using the MacTCP protocol driver. Mews communicates with
mail and news servers provided on some mainframe computer or computers.
Mail communication depends on the SMTP and POP (POP3 or POP2) protocols
supported on the mail server, while news communication depends on the
NNTP protocol (version 1.5 or later) supported on the news server. By
utilising these protocols, a user need only have a POP mailbox account
on the mail server rather than a full login account. All posting of
mail or news is validated against the password for the POP account.
Features of Mews:
* one format of message cards for both mail and news items
* one format of index cards for mail items, newsgroups, and subject list
within a newsgroup
* ability to save and recall messages to text files
* ability to print messages with a standard banner
* ability to save, recall, print, discard multiple messages with one
operation
* posting of news as opposed to mail is determined by the recipient of the
message being one or more known newsgroups
* ability to delete your own message from a newsgroup (having first been
validated against the password for the POP account)
* the handling of long messages (in excess of 30000 characters) by querying
the user whether to discard excess characters or save direct to a text file
New in version 1.4.1

Changes since the original release version (1.3) include:
* more efficient use of space to cater for larger newsgroup lists
* better response when passwords are entered incorrectly or cancelled
* extended the timeout limit to avoid premature timeouts
* handles larger mail headers than before
* leaves SMTP, NNTP to include full date and time on messages
* prohibits typing CR in sensitive configuration fields
* new option to determine whether the menu bar is to be hidden or not
* up and down arrow keys are used to locate the next newsgroup with
unread articles
Note: The up and down arrows introduce a significant new feature:
- the first time one of them is clicked, Mews determines and marks the
newsgroups with unread articles. This is a time consuming process, but
it is only done once.
- subsequently, clicking on an up or down arrow will finish with the
current group and go to the next one with unread articles

Mews is available as shown below. It is available in two forms, both of
which are Stuffit and Binhexed. The file Mews_1.4.hqx is a complete
release of version 1.4, including the updated manual. The file
Mews_Patch_1.4.1.hqx is a patcher which will modify any version 1.3 stack
and bring it up to version 1.4. The patcher is useful since it avoids
having to save the messages and the newsgroup from your current stack,
and later recalling them into the new stack.

This is version 1.1 of The Mouse Odometer. It is an INIT/Application
combination that keeps track, in miles, of how far your cursor travels
onscreen. The INIT quietly keeps track of the mileage; the application
displays the information in a small window.
The application runs happily in the Finder, but is really meant for background
processing under Multifinder. It remembers where the window is placed on
the screen, so you can make it a "Startup" Multifinder application and always
have the odometer dials visible.
It's a fun toy --- you'll be amazed just how far the mosue actually travels
in the course of an average week. Enjoy!

Subject: Go-Go Da
The Go Go DA works by drawing a PICT resource repeatedly. The trick is
the DA seems to do amimation because it contains a large stack of bitmap
objects. Each bitmap draws over the preceding one, creating the effect
of motion. Quite simple. But the problem is the fact that it has no
this method dosn't work very well on the faster machines. If you would
like to examine this PICT, just go into ResEdit and copy it and swith
to MacDraw. Paste the PICT and the select it and ungroup it (I think.)
You can then pull off each frame of the amimation.

We're having some unexplained and non-reproducible system hangs among
our various Mac IIx/cxes running Oracle for Macintosh (and it's large
HyperCard shell), along with a bunch of inits (some of which are there
to test solutions to the problem!), etc.
We've cleared up a lot of problems like this in the past by watching
the net (!) for news--like the incompatibility of early WingZ and
6.0.5, for example, which could cause SUBSEQUENT applications to fail
unexpectedly.
Someone has lent us a copy of Andrew Welch's INIT Tracker 1.0 to try
out, but no one here has enough knowledge to really be able to
determine what the implications are of what the report is telling us
)-:
It would be great if someone could look this over and say, "Why,
there's your trouble right there. This init is hitting on that init's
stuff, right there." Any takers? I'd be GLAD to mail you the report
to look over...(-:
Sample: MacIIx, 6.0.5, 8M (w/Virtual '030, 5M real), Color QuickDraw,
AME (two unreproducible init names), Heap Booster, Responder,
SuperClock!, TSSnet, and ~OracleInit.
Problem: machine locks up unexpectedly, mostly in Oracle but sometimes
also in MacIRMA or other applications; found usually when student
assistant checking status of workstations finds workstation has been
abandoned (these are in a public area). Checked regularly for
viruses, etc.

Here is a (hopefully) challenging question for you all: I am setting up
a computer graphics lab where the files can get to be awfully large. We have
considered using removable drives, but the funds are currently not available.
What we do have a a file server with 720MB of storage. I would like to give
each student an account on the server so that they can dave their files there.
What I would like to do is limit the amount of storage that each student has
in their account (i.e. no account could have more than 10MB of storage).
Does anyone know of a way to do this without having to partition the drive
into 50 or so partitions? Is there a program that I can use to do this?

Hello All-
A long time ago I had a DA called Molasses, and what it did was to
"Lubricate" the processor with Apple Juice, Molasses, etc. In other
words, it slowed the machine down to 1/1, 3/4, 1/2, or 1/4 speed. It was
a rather simple and small DA. However, back when I owned a Plus, I
had no need for it, as any reduction in speed was painful, so I deleted
it from wherever I had it. Now that I have had an SE/30 for 6 months,
I need something to slow it down, and that DA came to mind.
If anyone has it, I would appreciate it if they could .hqx it and send it to
me or post it to info-mac.

I know of some one who has had the same problems using LaserWriter 5.2.
The only fix that I could suggest was to turn off background printing
(since we are in an AppleShare printer spooled environment, it doesn't
help much anyway). Does anyone know of any other reasons these problems
might occur?

Subject: StuffIt Deluxe 1.01 Bug
WARNING:::WARNING::: There is a problem with StuffIt Deluxe 1.01 If you have
an archive and are copying files from it to another archive using the finder
set up ( dragging the materials from one archive to the other ) you will
probably corrupt your archive. If you try to move elements of an archive
around in the same archive ( to make them alphabetically listed, for example )
you will corrupt your archive. I talked to Aladdin Software, they said they
realized this bug existed and were going to put out a fix in a few weeks.
On a lighter note, does anyone have a copy of Diamond Demo? I used this Demo
to pack some software I have. Apparently, after a few weeks, these archives
will not unpack themselves, their demo period has expired!! This is not good,
so I have copied the resources from a good archive to these un-unstuffable ones
and unstuffed them. I thought I got rid of all my Diamond archives, but I
found a disk with some stuff on it in Diamond, I need them unpacked. So does
anyone know where I can find it?? I looked here, and every other Mac archive
I could find, there is no copy of it.
Also, does anyone know of any other raytracers for the macintosh other than the
one in the archives right now? Preferably it would have color.

I get these same error messages from any stuffit archive that has
a blank password (i.e. one that prompts you for a password but doesn't
really have one). The number of these kind of submissions are growing and
I wish we could do something to correct it.
I don't understand why StuffIt is apparently requiring that people supply
a password when they create an archive. I've never been asked by stuffit
for a password when I have created an archive. Does StuffIt have a preferences
file or something that these people need to trash? Does anyone have any
answers or ideas. There are some archives that I really want but that I
cannot extract because they give me the above errors after I hit return
when I've been prompted for a password when attempting to extract one of
these archives.

I just uploaded some Fortran/Pascal file utilities
that archive any file attached to a Fortran unit. Utilities
provide creation/modification/fullpathname for archival purposes.
It's also possible to call Think Pascal-compiled libraries
>From Language Systems Fortran. It turns out that Think compiler
produces Upper and Lower case names, just as you enter them in
your program. Hence all the 'OBJ '-file entries are mixed case,
whereas MPW's Pascal/Fortran languages all use upper case names
for entries in the 'OBJ ' files. To use Think Pascal libraries,
you need to have all public (i.e. those which occur in the
interface portion of a unit) to be all caps. It's probably good
that Think libraries are mixed case sensitive, because then there's
no confusion between MPW libraries (all caps entries) and Think
libraries (mixed case).

While reading news in another newsgroup, I saw a mention of version of
Macintosh OS for Pakistan in the Urdu language. It was reportedly developed by
Apple, and is called UrduTalk. Does someone has any info about it, or how to
obtain it in the USA? Also, are there any Urdu versions of popular mac software
, like MacWrite or PageMaker, available?
Along the same topic, if you check the newer system files with ResEdit, in
some of the resources, there are options for setting the date/currency etc for
a specific country from a long list. I played around with it but it did not
appear to make anything different. How does that option work?

I know from your postings to the net that you are very familiar with the Mac,
so what I am about to suggest may be something you have already tried.
AppleShare lets you multi-launch applications if their Shared bit is on.
ResEdit will allow you to change this. What you find is that the latest and
newer software already have the setting on.

While not exactly the automated approach that you are asking
for, you can probably get the job done using MakeWrite, which
should still be in the info-mac archives. If you can obtain
text-only files from the VAX that have ascii meta-commands
indicating formatting, then MakeWrite can be set up to recognize
those meta-commands and create a formatted MacWrite document.
MakeWrite does not deal much with layout, however. You will
have to add additional rulers, headers, footers, and page breaks
by hand. Usually adding a few extra tab stops to the default
ruler is sufficient to format an entire document.
