Open WMV videos in iMovie???

Post by blatantlybroken » February 10th, 2010, 12:17 am

If I record a video from my cell phone (not iPhone) I can get it onto my computer but I can't figure out how to open it in iMovie to edit. It's just grayed out in the open window.

Well you definitely need to export them QuickTime format. First you need Windows Media Components for QuickTime, which you can download here. This is basically a plugin that allows QuickTime to handle WMV files natively. It is (or was?) based on Flip4Mac.

Now, you'll find lots of references to paid versions of Flip4Mac so you can export them but I find that's rubbish. If after downloading the free version of Windows Media Components for QuickTime/Flip4Mac, simply open your WMV video in QuickTime Player (hopefully you're on Snow Leopard) and you can do File -> Save As and choose a resolution or format. I was able to save my test video "for iPhone" and then iMovie imported it just fine.
