Need help with mac-gzip-111-src.hqx utility

Post by shirasagi » February 2nd, 2010, 12:16 pm

Being barely a Unix non-virgin, I'm in dire need of help with mac-gzip-111-src.hqx. I've read much of the documentation, but find myself at a near-total loss as to what to do.
Can I even use the utility on an Intel Mac?

Technicalia: iMac, 2.8 Ghz Intel Core Duo, 10.5.8, 2 GB MHz DDR2 SDRAM.

I will insanely appreciate any help given.

Cheers,

Is this a file on the Info-Mac Archive? If so, then the answer is probably no, you can't.

EDIT: Oh, I found it. Yeah, this is an HQX file. The creation date is 1995. That's from Mac OS 7 days. So no, you can't :(

Here's the reference page on the Info-Mac Archive: http://www.info-mac.org/viewtopic.php?f ... 831&p=2832

Well, nuts. I was afraid of that.
Can anyone recommend another mean to decompress .gz archives? Archive Utility and Stuffit Expander don't work. I've gingerly tried various Unix utilities in Terminal, but get the same results each time:

invalid compressed data -- Huffman code > 32 bits packed data

Is this a single particular gzip file you're trying? Or a group of files all from the same source? Perhaps it's corrupt?

The file is one of over 1600, created by a file-recovery app. I've considered the possibility of file corruption; I just want to be able to look inside a few of the .gz archives to be certain of their contents before I trash the lot of them.

Have you tried using good old StuffIt Expander? Quote from linked page:

StuffIt Expander 2010 - Easily expand and decode all the files you download from the Web or receive in your email. Expands over 30 archive file formats...uncompress Zip archives created by WinZip® and other zip utilities, decompress tar, gzip and bzip archives, and more. Just drag, drop, and you're done! From BinHex to Zip, StuffIt to MIME, Expander accesses more formats, in less time, with zero hassles.

I'd say if StuffIt can't do it, then it might not be possible.

So far, StuffIt hasn't done it. I suppose this is a lost cause.
Thanks for all your help.

Do you know which backup program was used to make all these archives?
