Subject: [!] MIME-ifying the digests...
Hi All,
Many people have requested that we make the digest MIME compliant -- so
that each seperate message in the digest appears as its own mail message in
mime mail readers.
We have experimental scripts set up to do that now, and would like to do a
test digest. Our worry is that we will kill a lot of the other readers out
there by making this change to the digest format. We have kepts the number
of "---" between messages the same in an effort to keep all the other readers
out there working correctly. Further, overall, this procedure adds very few
lines to the digest (I think it is about 10 or so).
The next digest will be in this new MIME format. Please let us know how it
works, if it breaks the way you currently read the digest, etc.
Cheers,
Gordon (info-mac moderator)
P.S. we are using the content type "multipart/digest".

Subject: (Q) Getting to files in windows opened off screen
Hi I have encountered this a few times.
I mount a remote drive from a computer with a big screen (17inch) onto the
desktop of my SE/30. When I try to open the volume by double clicking it
opens off screen. I can seen the zoom flying off to the left. What do I
do now? Is there a way to clean up the window or toss bring it back to the
center of the screen?
I also had this problem with an inserted disk. A folder that I opened did
so off screen (this was on a 17 inch screen). At least then I could view
the folders by name. I was never able to gain control of the window
position in the icon view though. Since it was in my mac I was able to
list the files by name and I could see them them.
What to do?

Subject: [Q] BBEdit and Mac LC 475
Hi netters,
I'm using BBEdit Lite 3.0 to do extensive grep find and replace on
large text-only files. I've found that BBEdit chokes on certain text
strings when it has to do a grep Replace All.
For instance, the following strings:
find ^(%A )([^;]*)(; )
replace with \1\2\r%A
invariably generate a crash with a type 1 Error (it's not a memory
problem -- increasing BBEdit's ram allocation to 6Mb didn't make any
difference).
I sent to the folks at BBEdit a bug report, including a MacsBug log,
but they answered that they couldn't reproduce the problem.
Could it be something wrong with the machine, rather than with BBEdit?
I'm using a Mac LC 475 and System 7.1; I wonder if there's anybody out
there who has experienced similar problems with BBEdit on LC 475s.
Thanks,

I would like more information on the file handling utilities of Now
Utilites 5. Even in Now Utilities 4 it was possible in the Open File
context to use SuperBoomerang to search in compressed archives (here
Compact Pro archives) and even to extract a file from such an archive.
I am therefore puzzled why Now QuickFiler provides an Inspector which
allows you to look (seamlessly) into compressed archives, but not to
extract the file. I might have even expected that the Now Folders
would let you look into compressed archives (at least for file
extraction) but that doesn't work either.
Am I right in identifying the above limitations? Are there any plans

Subject: Compare program for text
I am running system 7.1 and the two programs I had been
using for text comparison (Compare & Compare 0.9) bomb with
error=1 or 3 when I start them. I assume they do not work
with newer systems or newer Macs. Does anyone have a suggestion
for a program to replace them? There doesn't seem to be anything
in the archives. CompareAll does work for my application because
it displays the comparison in hex.
I actually never used Compare 0.9 but its description indicates that
is exactly what I need. I have written to the author. Perhaps,
if he reads this, he will post and update.

---------------------------Original message----------------------------
I was working happily this evening preparing Armenian
manuscript alphabets from Kodak CD rom images of the
pages we are using for the Album of Armenian Paleography
when the strangest anomaly occured.
If you are not a Mac feak, probably the rest will be
boring so go onto the next message.
Suddenly, the machine informed me that there was no
RAM available. OK. I have a Centris 650. 8 mega on the
board, another two 8 mega simms, total 24 mega.
I looked at "About Macintosh": I was told that the
System is taking 20 mega approx. and there are 4 mega
avaialbe.
Normally the system is about 2 mega.
I took the following steps:
a. I re-installed system. rebooted; same results.
b. I used an alternative system, "blessning" it of course: same results.
c. I started from a CD Rom; same results.
d. I pulled one SIMM. The System was then about 12 mega.
e. Using Now Menus, I looked at the size of the heaps:
the applications heap is as expected.
the systems heap is 2 mega, as it ought to be.
Back to Finder, and the same problem.
Ran Norton Disk Doctor, and other that the usual dates,
nothing was wrong.
Reinstalled the Simm. Same System.
Any ideas out there.
I might add that the Apple people here are impossible. Last
problem was wrongly diagnosed, wrongly repaired and cost
me $800!!
Please answer to me personally not to the network
Help please !!!!!!!!

Just keep cool concerning UNIX on Macs. There is an environment that is
definitely
competitive to Linux - MachTen. And what is more - dear PC freaks - is that
Linux is
currently being ported to the PowerPC platform for not to be bound only to
Intel
processors. And what's the interesting thing is: The implementors are working
on
Apple
PowerPC's! So there's no reason to be too arrogant if you have a PC with
Linux.

Subject: MacOberon Version 4.1
I just downloaded MacOberon4101.hqx (1008 KB) from
neptune.inf.ethz.ch/pub/Oberon/MacII .
>From text files in the 4101 package (ReleaseNotes.Text and HFS.Text) I've
copied a few paragraphs (below the ---) that describes new (+/-)
features/improvements in this version. I may have discovered a bug re.
"Opening documents from the Finder": I installed 4101 on an MO disk called
"REO-130". When I double-clicked on the file "DoubleClickOnMe", MacOberon
started, but the file was not opened. After having copied the file to
another disk called "MacF", double-clicking on this copy made MacOberon
open the document as intended. I have reason to believe that the "-" in
"REO-130" was the critical element.
(A final "request": I still would like some info about practical non-Mac
use of Oberon. If someone has a "real-life" application and are willing to
share some source code, feel free to send me, [email protected], a
few words, or a copy.)
---
MacOberon Version 4.1 is a full implementation of Oberon that behaves
just like every other Oberon V4 system. However, the Macintosh
implementation has several additional features that make use of some of
the nicer capabilities built into the Macintosh operating system. These
additional features are described below. ...
Hie[r]archial File System
The original Oberon system has a flat directory structure, while
MacOberon supports the hierarchial structure of the Macintosh file
system. Special care has been taken to integrate this file naming
hierarchy into Oberon as smoothly as possible. ...
Installable Menu Texts
MacOberon's viewers use pop_up menus that require less space than fully
expanded commands. This feature should be especially useful for
PowerBook users. The individual menus are fully editable and their
default contents are user_configurable. ...
QuickDraw and PostScript Printing
MacOberon supports different print architectures concurrently. The
printer name is used to distinguish between available options. ...
32_bit QuickDraw Support
MacOberon is based on 32_bit QuickDraw. It reserves a palette of sixteen
colours for animation, of which colous 0..3 and 15 are predefined while
the remaining can be defined by the user. Calls to Display.SetColor and
Display.GetColor now work as described in the Oberon System book
(Oberon's RGB_Values in the range 0..255 are scaled for the Macintosh by
multiplying them with 101H). ...
Keyboard Break Mechanism
Running commands are interrupted by the key combination Command_Period.
The next break can only be triggered after a delay of one second, in
order to prevent a string of trap viewers appearing on the screen of an
impatient user "hammering" break commands into the keyboard.
Opening documents from the Finder
MacOberon is now high_level event aware. Among other things, this
enables it to open Oberon documents that are double_clicked from the
finder. They will be opened using the command Edit.Open, and the full
pathname leading to the document will appear in the menu bar. It is also
possible to open documents created with older versions of MacOberon, or
any text editor for that matter, by dragging the document's icon onto
MacOberon's application icon, or one of its aliased.

Subject: Password program
Does anyone know of a program to set protection on individual files and/or
disks? I don't need anything fancy; I already have FileGuard. However,
although FileGuard sets protection on volumes, it does not protect disks.
Also, FileGuard's file protection actually encrypts files. I'd like something
similar to the password feature in Excel 4, where you assign a password to a
file. Before opening the file, Excel prompts for the password. If the password
is incorrect, Excel does not open the file.

You don't say what print architecture the HP is set to use, but I will
assume it is using Unix's lp/lpr.
In that case you should use the LaserWriter driver on your Mac to print
your documents to postscript file. Then you should use MacLpr or Lp-remote
(both on sumex-aim) to send the file over the Internet to the Hp printer.
You may have to have the sysadmin tell the printer to accept jobs from your
Mac. Some printers are configured to refuse jobs from unknown internet
nodes.

Hello,
I just got a new powermac 6100/60 and a GeoPort adapter. Everything
works well expect that I can't get a better efficiency than 40-50% while
tranfering files with ZMODEM. I tried ZTerm and ClarisWorks (both native),

Someone have expercienced some problems like that? I would like to

I'm confused. I have a Quadra 605 with an external Apple CD300 and a

System beeps and the startup sound give me sound from both speakers.

Subject: System 7.5 problem
I have a problem with 7.5 - every time I set the Launcher conrtol panel
to automatically open on startup (using the General Controls control
panel) and restart or start up, the computer asks me to insert the
disk 'Internal HD' as though my Internal HD was a floppy - why won't it
recognize my hard drive? When I choose launcher from the control panels
folder manually, it does not give me the same message.
The same thing happens when I use the time and date control panel and
try to change the color of the menu bar clock. The computer again asks
me to insert the disk 'Internal HD', and when I try to cancel (I have to
choose cancel because the Hard Drive is already there and there is no
other option - I can't insert a disk it already has inside the machine!)
the computer crashes. Any guesses as to why these bugs are happening?
Thanks

I think your problem is that you're force-quitting Zterm. And I really
don't know why you're doing this. Just tell Zterm not to lower DTR on
exit, and you can quit normally.

What is the possibility that you actually read about QT 2.0 MIDI function-

could be stuffed onto a single floppy using the MIDI format with QT 2.0 and
the QT 2.0's musical instruments extension.

My understanding is this: there is no special MacWEEK "view file."
Instead, you can use the setext format in the Preferences... if you
either (1) format each issue of MacWEEK yourself (which is what I do), or
(2) download the (not free) setext version of MacWEEK. (Sorry, I don't
remember where in ZMac they've hidden the setext-formatted version of
MacWEEK, but it shouldn't be too hard to find.)
Hope this helps.
