Subject: [*] CodeWarrior Colorfix Patch 1.0.2

CodeWarrior Colorfix Patch 1.0.2
Created by Chris K. Thomas

The otherwise excellent CodeWarrior development enviroment has a few
aesthetic defects (one is a bug). These have been present since DR/1,
but have yet to be fixed (we're at 4.5 and counting, now). The
enviroment engineers have better things to do, of course, so I solved
the problems myself.

The defects in question:
Metrowerks' PopUp MDEF does not display correctly if one has custom
menu colors (through Greg's Buttons or a handmade 'mctb' or whatever).
+ The standard MDEF is replaced with one of my own devising.
Projector & Locked-disk indicators are only in B&W.
+ These are replaced with appropriate color versions.

CodeWarrior Colorfix Patch been tested with CW/4 and CW/4.5 only, but
should work with all previous versions of the enviroment (though I
don't recommend using earlier versions). The Patch should only be
applied to a copy of the CodeWarrior enviroment(s).

1.0.2 fixes the wierd colors which happen if you don't have Greg's
Button or a custom default 'mctb' installed.

Bug reports, comments, suggestions, questions are welcome, as always.

Subject: [*] Dragonsmith 1.1.1 CodeWarrior update

Dragonsmith CW Update updates Dragonsmith 1.1.1 for CodeWarrior C++.

The full Dragonsmith kit (available separately) lets programmers easily
create drag-and-drop applications for use in System 7 or greater. This
archive contains project files for CodeWarrior 4.5 as well as replacements
for 8 of the source code files, incorporating changes needed for
compatibility with Apple's Universal Headers and CodeWarrior C++. Users
of Symantec C++ may benefit from this upgrade as well, although use of
Dragonsmith 1.1.1 in Symantec C++ 6.0 or greater has not been tested and
is therefore not fully supported.

This update was produced by Francis H Schiffer, 3rd. Support for the
CodeWarrior version of Dragonsmith will be provided (when possible) by the
original author of Dragonsmith 1.1.1, Paul Hoffman.

Dragonsmith is freeware, Copyright (c) 1992-1994 Paul M. Hoffman. Programs
created using Dragonsmith may be distributed without restriction.

NOTE: "Drag-and-drop" here refers to the original Apple Event variety, not
to the more recent Drag and Drop for Macintosh (aka the Drag Manager).

Subject: [*] HomeMaker 1.0b5 - A Stack to Create HTML Home Pages

HomeMaker was designed to let more or less normal people create a
autobiographical blurb to be posted on a webserver. It prompts them to
enter their e-mail address, position, academic history, background,
activities, interests and pointers to other sites on the web. The stack
then translates all that into nicely formatted html and exports it as a
text file.

HomeMaker allows webmasters to get a lot of home pages put together without
tweaking and without having to teach a course in HTML. Requires HyperCard.

Enclosed is the latest version of MPEG Audio for Macintosh. It's a freeware
MPEG Audio playing and conversion utility for the Macintosh. It requires
System 7 and either a 68020 or better with FPU or a Power Macintosh. It is
distributed as a fat binary and is based on maplay1.2. It will support
real-time playback on a Power Macintosh.

Version 0.3 allows it to be placed in the background, allows 16-bit
playback on 68K Macs (in addition to Power Mac support in 0.2), uses
command period to cancel playback and converstion, and should not crash
when run on Macs without an FPU.

Again, the interface needs some help, but it was a quick job to listen to
sounds.

Subject: [*] Pict2Pict (utility); converts between PICT formats

This program is similar to PictResUtils by Roland Gustavsson. I needed to
do just what that program did, move PICTs between resources and the single-
file format, but had no access to the existing program at the time.

Pict2Pict supports drag-and-drop, should work under System 6 as well as 7.
It uses temporary memory when needed, so its own partition size is minimal.

When you open files with Pict2Pict, each PICT is displayed, so you can choose
whether to save it or skip it, or save all.

simple to the complex, and from the familiar to the exotic. Looking for the
classics? Play Klondike, Canfield, Golf, Forty Thieves. Want a challenge?
Try Fortress, Spider, Spiderette. Need something short and simple for
break, or to amuse the kids? Try Quadrille, Aces High, and The Wish. Want
something exotic and different? Check out Accordion, Pyramid, Grandma's
Game. Want a new game that you've never seen before? Manx and Tabby Cat
were created exclusively for Solitaire Till Dawn.

Solitaire Till Dawn's features include:

o Infinite undo and redo
o Individual preferences and score-keeping for each member of your family
o Make automatic moves with a simple mouse-click
o On-line rules for all the games
o Choice of card size
o Choice of background colors and patterns

features are enabled, and full documentation is included.

New in version 2.0.1:
+ Fixed a bug which confused the settings of the "Large Cards" and "Never
Use Color" preference options. This could cause crashes on
non-color-QuickDraw Macs such as the Plus, SE, Classic, and Portable.
+ Added the "Auto Scroll" menu item, allowing the user to turn
auto-scrolling on and off.
+ Now allows dragging partial builds in Forty Thieves as a shortcut to
dragging the cards one at a time, if the cards are in suit and there are
enough empty tableaus.
+ Now allows the use of an alias to the ColorCards file in place of the
real thing.

Subject: [*] Soon v4.7.0; an astronomical calendar

Hello,
this is my latest version of "Soon4", v4.7.0, a calendar, sun & moon utility!
Now coming in both, a plain 68000 and an FPU Version...!

What Soon4 shows you:
1. The weekday and date in "long form"...
2. How many days are gone so far and how many are left this year, including
automatic leapyear detection...
3. The current location and timezone including automatic DST detection
4. Three different twilights:
The astronomical - starts/ends when the sun is 18 deg. below horizon.
That's when no more daylight's left at all...
The nautical - 12 deg. below horizon. Used for naval purposes, starts when
the brightest stars come out...
The civil - 6 deg. below horizon. Ends when there just not enough light
left for work (traditional, that is :)
4.1 If you're beyond the polar circle (north or south) you're also noticed
about the polar night and the midnight sun...
5. Sunrise and -set time...
6. The moonphase with it's exact days, the position of the moonterminator
and a common phrase of the actual phase...
7. Two analog clocks:
- Upper clock, which is a 24 hours analog clock.
It shows the start/end of daytime/nighttime plus twilight. This gives
you a graphical impression of how much day-/night-/twilight hours you
have that day...
- Lower clock - is a "usual" 12 hours analog clock. It's updated every
second and shows you the current time...
8. A graphic of the current moonphase...
9. The buttons:
- The "Set" button, prompts the user for location/timezone data.
- The "Log" button, prompts the user for a start and end date and writes
the data to a textfile. In a window with 6 buttons you can choose,
what
data you want to be logged to the file. "Everything" or just some
selected moon phases (new, 1st qtr, full, 3rd qtr)...
- The "Thank You" button, quits the program...

Docfiles included.

have fun, Xn.

Subject: [*] Upload of Postage $aver for Filemaker Pro

Here is one more attempt to properly send you this suite of scripts for
Filemaker Pro. I think I have the file properly in binHex and .sit. My
sysop says that I can attach it to this message with a control-r command,
so hopefully it will get there properly this time.

Postage $aver prepares your mail for bulk rates. Using your database, it:
* creates complete banding, sacking and labeling instructions;
* computes postage and piece ctts. for USPS paperwork;
* shows what post office to use for best rates, and figures discounts;
* exceeds UPSP sort requirements so your mail moves faster (in theory);
* creates sequence numbers to sort your list in sack/package order;
and much more!
Fully documented!
Requires Filemaker Pro 2.0 or later (Mac or Windows), but data files can
be in any format that Filemaker Pro can read.

What you need is A Remote Network Server (ARNS) from munnari.OZ.AU
(128.250.1.21) in the /Mac directory. ARNS requires a Unix host for clients to
be able to connect to the LAppleTalk network via the Internet or by modem.

EndNote has an optional import module called EndLink which (I think)
can process Medline stuff -- but it's rather expensive. I couldn't
convince my department to buy it, so I don't know how good it is.

I process Medline and BioAbstracts (which has a similar format) downloads

BBEdit is fairly unstable, and it very often crashes after the "Replace

Correction: The correct server name is time-a.timefreq.bldrdoc.gov. The
name "time_a" is an illegal domain name; domain names may not contain
underscores. NIST has recently changed the name to the legal one (with a
"-" instead of a "_"), but has left the old one as an alias for the time
being. Use the one with a "-".

Hi all,

One of my colleagues has just got a PowerMac 7100 (is there a smiley for
"I'm green with envy"?). It came with System 7.1.2 installed and a
CD-ROM with System 7.5. He called Apple Canada about a manual for

on-line help. I found that hard to believe (and I also know that some
of the Apple Canada tech support people don't know a hard disk from a
hole in the wall), so I checked with our local dealer, who said that
the only manual for System 7.5 is a 15-page leaflet which shows how to
use a mouse and how to use the on-line help.

Is that true? There is indeed no System 7.5 manual?

I had this same problem from both FileMaker and ClarisWorks after I
upgraded. This was the clue to the problem because they both use the Claris
Fonts file in the Claris folder in the System Folder. It turned out that I
had a corrupted Zapf Dingbats suitcase which was messing up their common
font database. (Of course, I worked alphabetically, so it was the last one
to check...) The mystery is that the suitcase worked fine under System 7.1.

One good way to narrow down the problem is to create a folder on your
desktop and move the System and Finder into it. When you re-bong your Mac
it will start up with that new "System" folder and only use the Chicago,
Geneva and Monaco fonts from the ROM. If ClarisWorks runs with this
labotonized system, you know it's something in your real System Folder
causing the problem.

ClarisWorks 2.1v4 is the latest, if you don't count the 3.0 upgrade, which
I haven't seen yet.

Apologies for a question which is a bit archaic, but here goes.

Subject: CopyDoubler slowdown problem solved (A)

I recently asked why CopyDoubler slowed to a crawl when copying folders
with hundreds of documents in them. I found a work-around on my own:
Copy the CLOSED folder which contains the jam-packed folders onto the
CLOSED icon of the volume (hard disk, Syquest cartridge, etc.). Fast
copy then works properly; whereas if I copy the files from the OPEN
folder original to the duplicate open folder, I get the slowdown.
CopyDoubler reports the same number of changes made in either case,
but in the second case spends a long time looking for changes before
copying.

Meanwhile I got these explanations, the first before I discovered my
solution.

Dear Mr. Brians,
In response to your comp.sys.mac.digest question:
Copydoubler has a buffer of around 1024k, which I suppose if ex-
ceeded will force it to send copies in segments.
Now imagine block transfers on a large scale like your 300 files
and you can see that you have created a backlog on the RAM.
As part of any program is to speak to the RAM chips,
you may have exceeded the capacity of those block transfers.
If you can, set the buffer to 1024k in Copdoubler the Control Panel. If that
does not speed things up, turn copydoubler off, and buy a $10 shareware called
AppDisk. It will handle copies to RAM and then elsewhere a lot quicker than
Copydoubler.
AppDisk is a true RAMDisk program, and is set by the Get Info
box in the Finder the same way an application is. That Get
Info box determines the size of the RAMDISK.
Hope this helps.
Sincerely,
[email protected]

Mr. Brody sent along this info in response to my explanation of my
solution. The details ae over my head, but may be useful to someone.

Dear Mr. Brians,
As I understand you, Copydoubler is only slow if the window from the other
volume is open. Is the other volume something other than a hard disk?
Because if it is, this means keeping the window open the finder has to think
about: 1. making sure the disk whose window is open never is ejected,
2. making sure than stuff sitting on the hard disk goes to another controller
card, and at the same time that the open window is indeed active.

Also, the finder's multitasking is faster when windows are closed, and
CopyDoubler uses the same RAM chips that the Finder uses to speed up the
copying. Thus keeping the window open, you are transfering between several
hardware things, including the software for screen redraws, the software that
prevents or causes please insert disk X to show up or not show up, not to
mention any monitor cards that try to speed up the redraws while the Finder is
thinking.
Keeping windows hidden of open applications is the same deal. The Finder
assigns priority to who occuppies its RAM chips. That is the difference
between pre-emptive and non-pre-emptive multitasking. One assigns priority
(which takes time), the other allows both applications to share time equally.

CopyDoubler has the option to work in the background. This option should
always be used when you can, as it is faster. Check the CopyDoubler control
panel in your Control panel folder.

Hope this helps.
Sincerely,
[email protected] (you may call me Mr. Brody)

I do let CopyDoubler work in the background. It didn't seem to have
anything to do with my particular problem.

Subject: Looking for a dialup mail program

Hello all!

As a 'Net user with only dialup (vt100) UNIX access (no PPP/SLIP -- they
charge extra and I'm cheap ;), I'm looking for a program to handle my
email. I've been working on writing one, but what with school, work, a
life, and a lack of knowledge of programming the Mac interface (I do
have the C++ thing figured out tho...), it may take me a while... In the
meantime I'd like to see what's out there and if anyone has something
that will meet my list of criteria. If you've got something (or it'll
only take you 20 minutes to write it ;), let me know. (Just a simple
little program that would retrieve mail over a vt100 connection would be
greatly appreciated.) Thanx.

1) Must work via a dialup connection to a UNIX host. No SLIP, PPP, or
TCP/IP.

2) Should have a scripting language to allow the program to log into a
variety of hosts, change to the right directory, and locate the mail
file. I particularly like the C-like scripting system in
Terminal2.2, available (w/source) from info-mac somewhere. This is
_really_ important 'cause to get to my host you have to do backflips
and watch while it fills your screen with several pages of "This
computer is for authorized government/educational use only...".

3) Should use an efficient method of transferring mail. I've found that
ZModem works really well, but text transfer through modem
compression works ok too.

4) Should be able to handle long mail (32K+). All mail programs I've
seen thusfar fail miserably here, and since I get a lot of digests
(info-mac included), I would really like to read all of them without
having to resort to BBEdit.

5) Should be able to strip headers. I really hate having to scroll
through two dozen lines of redirection to get to a three line
question.

6) Should be able to sort the mail into multiple boxes (or let me do it)
so that if I don't want to read the tirades on one of my mailing
lists until I'm good and mad I don't have to. ;)

7) Should be able to let me reply to mail. Somewhere I found a program
that (said it) could create a UNIX script out of your mail that you
could run and it would mail the mail. I've been looking into this
for my system, but haven't yet perfected it.

8) Should be extensible, perhaps by using plug-in modules. This way
when I get so used to using this great program and want to upgrade
to a PPP connection I can plug in another module and the program
will do POP3. (This feature completely utopian, and thus optional.)

I have been having major problems with all the WWW programs I've tried,

means but what happens is the program loads and I begin to use it (and
enjoy it!) and then everything freezes after I've visited one or more
sites. I think the maximum number of sites visited on a session has been
three. When the freeze hits, I try a power quit but can't do a restart
>From the finder without it freezing again. The only solution is to shut

I thought it might be a problem with Mosaic so tried MacWeb only to find
the same thing. Then I saw the announcements about Netscape so tried that.
If anything, it's worse than Mosaic in regard to the freezing although
what I've seen of the program really makes me want to solve this problem so
I can use it as it's fast and has a great looking interface. With
Netscape, if it doesn't freeze part way through loading I can use the

try any of the other features.

I'd also love to know any solutions.

I installed NCSAMosaic200A8.68k on a new machine, ran it, discovered I
had not installed the helper applications (JPEGView, Sparkle, etc.),
did so, then ran Mosaic again and found it could not find them and
offered to load graphics, sounds, etc. manually. Rebuilt desktop.
No go. Used Mosaic's controls to hand-assign each application for
each filetype. Still no go.Trashed the Mosaic Prefs file.

It worked!

Evidently the first time you run Mosaic, it puts its helper links
into your prefs file and cannot update that file under certain
conditions (not sure what they are). The trick: when installing
NCSAMosaic200A8.68k on a new volume install all the helper
applications before running Mosaic the first time. Or trash
the prefs file.

Because of that *&#!* prefs file in the system folder, you cannot
run different copies of Mosaic on the same machine from removable
volumes (like Syquest cartridges). NCSA says they're working on that.
Lots of applications assume you'll always be using your application
with the same System Folder. Wake up programmers! At least let us
copy a prefs file to our portable volume and use it to launch
the program (NCSAMosaic200A8.68k can't).

My own solution: use Mosaic Netscape instead. It's faster, neater
smaller, and portable. Now if only it could import Mosaic hotlists
directly.

Cindy,

My only suggestion is that you buy a single upgrade, and try the thing
for yourself. Word 6 is a huge hog of resources, including RAM and disk
space, and on my IIci it takes *forever* to boot.

It is somewhat faster on a PowerMac 9150 Work Group Server (what would you
expect, after all!?), but it often causes the server to crash, so for the
most part we avoid it there.

I still use version 4.0E for *lots* of word processing tasks, 5.1a for
"heavier" formatting, and *seldom* use 6.0.

This is a "thank you" to all the Symantec - Norton staff and R&D team that I
promised myself to do after resucitating a 1Gigabyte hard disk, password
protected with HDT, all the way down to the sad mac error code.
It was an ordeal to recover, but finally I did it.
For the curious, it started from a long SCSI chain cable connection.
SCSI2 is very delicate.

Subject: PlainTalk on 660AV

Hi: I am using a Centris 660 AV and recently I upgraded system software
>From 7.1 to 7.5. Then I tried to install the PlainTalk ver. 1.3. After
inserting the 5th disk(the last one), I was requested to insert the first
disk as usual . Then an alert box appeared, which said "An error has
occured during installation." Then I tried to custom install only the
speech recognition software. This time the installation seemed successful
. But after restarting, the bomb appeared to tell me a system error.
According to ReadMeFirst, PlainTalk 1.3 supports 660AV with system 7.5.
Is there two kinds of PlainTalk softwares for PowerMac and 660/840AV? Does
anyone have a similar experience or any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

Like a number of people complaining on info-mac today, I had problems with
Mosaic 2.0.0A8 crashing with "unimplemented trap", both the 68K and Power
Mac versions. I tried various things to fix Mosaic; it finally stopped
crashing after I removed a file called "LocalHome.html" that was in the
same directory as Mosaic. No idea where it came from or what it was
supposed to do...

Following my installing System 7.5 I lost my Laserprinter. The printer
exists. The same connectors allow my Powerbook to see it. On the other hand
I can't make any contact from my Quadra800 to anything on my little
localnet.

Is there any way of checking whether this is a hardware problem? Is there
any way of jogging the port to come back to life? Is it all a coincidence
or is 7.5 somehow guilty?

Please e-mail me [and the net if your advice is generally helpful].

As always, asking the net was immediately helpful. The moment I had sent
the message I remembered troubles reconfiguring MacTCP and fiddling with
the Network ControlPanel. Indeed, I had mindlessly clicked it to Remote
Only. So this was a case of of RWYDTTFCPs [remember what you did to the

Subject: Problems with SupraFax LC

Gentlemen:

We use a Supra FAXmodem V.32bis, a Boca (same ROM's as Supra,
apparently), and a couple of SupraFAX LC's. With hosts to which the
V.32bis and the Boca will *always* connect at 14,400 (using *identical*
setups in Microphone Pro), the LC's *always* connect at 9,600.

The Microphone Modem Settings box for "Always Connect at Highest Possible
Speed" is checked in all cases, with DTE (or is it DCE?) speeds set to
57,600. The *only* times that the LC's will connect at 14,400 is when
the modems on the other ends are also LC's.

What can we do to get these things to connect (to our Internet provider)
at 14,400?

Regards,

Traci J. Ingram

Subject: PwrPort for Duo Conflict

Hello,

I just received my new Duo280c with a PowerPort Mercury modem installed.
After installation of the same extensions and control panels I am currently
using on my old PB180, I experienced the following problem:

When I run Norton 2.0 Disk Doctor Norton will freeze when scanning the last
file, or when trying to quit after it ran to completion.

This problem was reproducable. Spending half a day with init-conflict hunting
revealed that the "Now Menus" Control Panel is in conflict with the

PowerPort for Duo Tool System Extension, and
PowerPort for Duo Control Panel.

Can anybody confirm this problem ? Any proposal what to use instead of
NowMenus (Shareware ?)....

Thanks for your help!

Subject: QuickTime 2.0 - How to mix MIDI and video?

QuickTime 2.0 has the wonderful ability to let you create MIDI "movies"
that will play back using stored sound samples. Two questions:

1) How can I combine a MIDI movie with a video movie, to give the video a
soundtrack? Premiere 4.0 won't even recognize MIDI movies as movies, so
it's no help.

2) Is it possible to direct QT MIDI output to an external MIDI device?

Thanks for any help.

I can use to check the news.
I've managed to use Eudora on my schools system, but whenever I try to

thru
a serial connectioin) it doesn't work.

Any help is appreciated, and I'll post a summary of replies.

Subject: Spreadsheet corrupts, looking for new one

Greetings,
My Full Impact spreadsheet that I bought awhile back is even corrupted on its
original copy.
I was looking for a comparable speadsheet, commercial or shareware with
graphs, freeze horizontal/vertical, sort column/row/ @ functions, charts, and
page setup/font, font/type sizing abilities. Is there one available on the
market now that works on a non-FPU Macintosh LC for around $100 or less?
System 7.0.0 is my current system, and no I can't upgrade to a newer version.
It should need less than 2.5 MB of RAM, and take up less than 2 MB of hard
disk space with these capabilities.
Thank you.
Sincerely,

Multiclip Pro by Olduvai Corp., now in version 3.1 at least, does this and
much more. I am very satisfied with it (except it has a heavy memory
footprint).

I hope this helps.

frequently but unpredictably unless that drive is turned off. This is true
even if all extensions are off, including SCSI Manager. The TT developer,

Subject: WWW Browsers

A week ago, I posted a message about problems I had with Mosaic200a8. I got
a whole bunch of responses. I sorted these in to two catagories. The "I've
had problems too" catagory, and the "MacWeb is better than Mosaic so you
should just try that" one. The latter were a little bit annoying. I like
Mosaic. But then I read in a newsgroup numerous recomendations for Mosaic
Netscape. So, I thought I'd try it. Can you say Wow? I can not think of
anything that I like better about Mosaic. Netscape *appears* to:

Work Faster
Allow you to move to a new page/scroll while the page is being loaded
Handle forms considerably better
Have a nicer interface
Have a bookmark interface that makes Mosaic's look like a joke
Allows you to sort items and add dividers
Export bookmarks to an HTLM document
Allows you to access bookmarked items through a menu
Requires a reasonable amount of memory (Turn down Preferred in Get Info box)

I'm sure that there are ways in which other browsers are better, but I have
found Netscape to be the best overall. I higly reccomend giving it a try.

Get MacWeb at http://galaxy.einet.net/EINet/MacWeb/MacWebHome.html

It's by far the best and I've tried them all. Command-period actually
*works*! :-) It's stable and fast. Very fast. Plus if you run your own
server it has some really nice options for capturing URLs and html files
