Subject: [*] ChaosPlot; an educational program about chaotic motion

ChaosPlot is an educational program I wrote to illustrate the basics of
chaotic motion. It allows the user to modify the equation of motion of a
damped, driven, anharmonic oscillator and look at the results in position,
velocity, and phase space. It implements a fourth-order Runge-Kutta
algorithm to determine the motion.

This program might be useful to teachers, physics students, or just about
anyone who wants to experiment with chaotic systems.

Subject: [*] Columnbo 2.1, A Tab-Delimited Import Utility

Columnbo is an easy to use utility for formatting plain text files
into columns of information, allowing them to be read by a spreadsheet
program such as Excel. This simply involves inserting tabs at fixed
positions within each line of text. But the real beauty of Columnbo
is that you needn't worry about remembering column positions.
Columnbo gives you the control to place column positions where you
want, intuitively and easily. Simply click in the ruler to drag
column markers where you wish.

Many popular spreadsheet, database, and graphing programs allow you
to import text files from various sources, but depend on information
being formatted into tab separated columns. Columnbo was originally
conceived to allow importing columns of accounting figures from a
large computer into Excel. This computer generated fixed columns of
text and figures separated by spaces. Without embedded tabs
separating the columns, entire lines of text would be read into the
first cell of each row. A convenient solution for this apparently
simple task was elusive, and nobody wanted to type in the tabs!

Subject: [*] Convert*Projects 1.0b6; THINK to CW converter

The attached StuffIt Deluxe archive contains version 1.0b6 of
Convert*Projects, from Bare Bones Software, Inc.

Convert*Projects is a utility which will read a THINK C 6.0 (or later)
or THINK Pascal 4.0 or later project, and emit equivalent projects for
use with both 68K and PowerPC versions of Metrowerks CodeWarrior.

This latest version sorts out segments in numeric order, and
rearranges segment numbers, if necessary, to be in monotonically
increasing order. This solves the problem in which Code Warrior would
get confused by missing or non-sequentially-numbered segments, and
hang.

This version of Convert*Projects is a "public beta". It is
substantially feature-complete, but has not undergone a full testing
cycle.

Convert*Projects is freeware, from the developers and publishers of
the popular text editors BBEdit and BBEdit Lite, and the Drop*PS
PostScript downloader. For more information, browse our FTP directory
on ftp.netcom.com, in /pub/bbsw, or send mail to [email protected].

Subject: [*] enigma25; encryption utility

I am pleased to announce the release of Enigma 2.5. A major upgrade to my
privacy protecting encryption application which runs in native mode on Power
Macintoshs.

The following are new features of Enigma 2.5
- Folders can now be directly added to vaults.
- Folder hierarchies maintained both while adding folders
to vaults and extracting folders from vaults.
- Registered users can create vaults containing up to 800
files, unregistered users continue to be able to create
vaults with up to five files.
- Clipboard encryption in a manner suitable for use in email.
- Encrypted files can be saved as binhex.
- A new status line across the top of the vault window shows
number of files in vault, total size of vault, and amount of
space that can be saved by compacting.
- A new interface makes it much easier to add many files and
folders at once to a vault.
- Files and folders can be added to an open vault by dragging
to the Enigma Application.
- The user interface continues to improve: more use of color,
more consistent interface, many little touches to make the
whole application easier to use. For example selecting a vault
file by typing in its name.

You should upgrade if you are using any previous version of Enigma.

FastClock+DCC version 3.4 is a program that uses the Macintosh serial ports
to send digital commands to model railroad locomotives or layout
accessories that are equipped with the National Model Railroad
Association's Digital Command Control Standard decoders.

It also has a fast clock for model railroad operations at up to 20:1 realtime.

40 accessories with 8 on/off functions each.
A better user interface to set up the locomotive data needed to operate trains
It takes advantage of a trick to get better speed control from a decoder by
sending two speed packets one after the other rapidly. This will cause the
motor to see an average speed step in between the integer values of the
standard.

Subject: [*] FTPd 2.3.0; an FTp daemon (server)

FTPd v2.3.0 is a Macintosh FTP server for use with MacTCP. FTPd allows
other machines on the Internet to FTP or Gopher to your Mac. It requires
System 7, File Sharing enabled, and MacTCP 1.1 (or later, 2.0.4 or later
recomended). It honours the Users&Groups privileges and passwords, and
supports multiple logins, anonymous FTP (user name anonymous or ftp), as
well as MacBinary and BinHex transfers, and the =B3MACB=B2 FTP command. It
runs either as a background only application,or as a normal application,
displaying the log file.

Changes since v2.2.0 include:
Vastly simplified FTPd Setup
Removed 200 file limit of searches and directory listings
Much improved transfer speeds in most cases (often twice the speed)
Complete rewrite of the login code
Complete rewrite of the AFP code
Async IO for all transfers

This is almost a complete rewrite of FTPd. As such, you might want to be
careful when you update to it before throwing away your old version. I
believe the version to be much more stable under heavy load, but after so
many changes there may be some lurking bugs - I hope not!

FTPd is $10 shareware.

Hope you like it,
Peter.

Subject: [*] Greg's Browser 2.4.1 (FAT); a file browser

Greg's Browser v2.4.1 (23 September 1994) (c)1993-94 Gregory D. Landweber
REGISTRATION FEE: US $20 or UK L12 Internet: [email protected]

Greg's Browser requires System 7 and Color QuickDraw. This version is
"Fat", containing both 680x0 and PowerPC native code for optimum
performance on Power Macs. There is a separate 680x0-only version.

Do you think the Finder is too slow and clumsy when navigating through
your folder structure? Do you perhaps use a hierarchical Apple menu
utility but are tired of zigging and zagging your mouse from submenu
to submenu? Or maybe you just like color icons. If so then you should
try Greg's Browser. Displaying multiple folders in a single window,
Greg's Browser lets you simultaneously see the contents of a folder,
its parent, and a subfolder, providing a quick and easy way of moving
both up and down through your folder hierarchy. Greg's Browser can
also open StuffIt and Compact Pro archives, letting you browse into
them just like they were normal folders.

Greg's Browser takes advantage of the "Macintosh Drag and Drop" and
"Stuffit Engine" extensions. Mac D&D can be found at ftp.apple.com,
and the Engine comes with Aladdin's "DropStuff with Expander Enhancer",
version 3.5.1 of which is currently available at the usual ftp sites.

Greg's Browser (version 2.2) is the winner in the "General Utilities
and Applications" category of the 1994 ZiffNet/MacUser Shareware Awards.

Version 2.4.1 is a minor update, fixing a couple of bugs, adding a few
more mini-icons, and giving my new internet e-mail address.

Subject: [*] Mombasa; a Gun Shy type game

I am sending a classic (at least *I* think so) strategy game for the
Mac. It's a mah jongg style game called Mombasa. It's a wonderful game
which until recently was available at Umich. For some reason, it was
deleted. This copy is from the eWorld online service, and seems to be
intact. Since the author declined to include a readme, I wrote
one (a simple one) for him.

This programme is similar in form and function to another game, Gunshy,
but (imho) is more responsive and flexable. You may select from one
of four tilesets, and may edit one of your own. You may even paste in
a background picture. You can also select one of five pre-defined
tile layouts, each progressivly more difficult, or edit your own.

It's 5$ U.S. Shareware. The author's address is included in the game
and the readme, as is his Prodigy address. If someone succeeds in contacting
him, please let me know.

Enjoy!

% Fixed problem where either the system would freeze or go into a loop
when a desktop rebuild was performed or if another process (extension,
application, etc.) put up an alert while PowerBar was trying to build
the toolbar.

A note about rebuilding the desktop: As mentioned, a fix is in place
to correct problems that occurred when rebuilding the desktop. These
days there are numerous ways one can rebuild, including via use of
several 3rd party utilities. One utility, TechTool from MicroMat, can
potentially contribute to a problem with PowerBar and it is
recommended that when you use this utility you deactivate PowerBar.
Note that the problem is primarily restricted to users who have
multiple volumes mounted on the desktop.

% Fixed problem where special commands would become "grayed out" in
the dialog list even though they were not installed onto the toolbar.

% Other minor fixes.

% There remains a potential problem with some Fax software. This will
be addressed in the next release.

Note: PowerBar should load prior to INITPicker to avoid a conflict.

Subject: [*] ShrinkWrap 1.1.1; a disk image utility

New features implemented in version 1.1.1:
- Adds option to Preferences that controls whether mounted images are
compressed in RAM.
- Deals with bad destination disks more gracefully.
- Correctly handles floppy disks inserted before ShrinkWrap=81 requests a
destination disk.
- Prevents File Manager from updating VIB with old data when ejecting disk
after copy.

ShrinkWrap is a freeware utility made to manage Apple disk images. It
incorporates the functionality of DiskCopy and MountImage into one 80K drag
and drop application, then does them one better by adding on-the-fly
compression/decompression with the StuffIt Engine.

ShrinkWrap has distinct advantages over MountImage in that it is an
application and not a control panel. As such, it uses no memory until it
is required and creates no INIT conflicts. Additionally, MountImage has a
well documented bug which frequently causes data corruption when mounting
fragmented image files. ShrinkWrap does not have this problem.

Using ShrinkWrap, you can create disk images by simply dragging and
dropping your floppy drive icons onto the ShrinkWrap icon. To mount image
files on the desktop, just drag and drop the image files onto the
ShrinkWrap icon. (A normal application front end just like StuffIt
Expander is available for those who are not into drag and drop
functionality.) If you have the StuffIt Engine installed (which is now
distributed as shareware in Aladdin's DropStuff 3.5.1), ShrinkWrap will
automatically compress and decompress the image files as they're created,
mounted, copied or converted according to the rules you set up in
Preferences.

Hello Richard,
My friendly Apple support person has told me that in theory, a localtalk
network can make one transition from PhoneNet to LocalTalk, but in real
life things may be different. I have several PhoneNet/LocalTalk cable
adaptors. These have a rj11 on one end and a round LocalTalk adaptor
on the other end.

One of my AppleTalk segments had PhoneNet hardware, one adaptor and ended
with Apple LocalTalk hardware. This segment has 3 Macs and a LaserWriter Pro.
These Macs cound see the LaserWriterPro and other printers and servers on
other parts of the network. Other Macs could see this LaserwriterPro. Every-
thing selected with chooser work. I did have an intermittent problem with
QuickMail and all tcp/ip applications.

I have since removed the AppleTalk LocalTalk hardware and replaced it with
the Farralon PhoneNet hardware and now everything works.

Don't mix PhoneNet and Apple LocalTalk hardware!

Dear Info-Mac Readers:

I recently purchased a Powerbook 150 (got sick of waiting for Apple to get

The manual doesn't address these sorts of things, but how much abuse can this
thing take? I mean, can I be using this thing in the passenger seat of my
friend's Chevy Blazer while we're driving on the Interstate. How about while
we're driving on back roads or on dirt roads? I'm concerned about how the
bumps will affect the hard drive. Is is okay to sit in the middle of a field

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm an "Old School" Macintosh user. You know,

boards would be worth looking at and if they are compatible with the POWER
PC .
Lastly , I am looking into the Soft Windows product but was dissappointed
to hear that it only supports standard mode Windows . Does any one know if
Softw Windows will support extended mode and when. Where can I get info

Subject: system 7.5 heap

I recently installed System 7.5 without Powertalk and QuickdrawGX on my
PowerBook 180c. At startup the system consumes 3.6Mb but as I work on my
computer the system slowly grows. After an hour it is up to 4.6 Mb. Is
this a bug? What's going on? System 7.1 did not seem to do this. Thanks.

"Tuner7-16" sounds like a nice thing.
Does anyone know whether there is something like this for System7.1?
