Subject: [*] "Halloween" StartUp Sound (8-bit)

The "Halloween StartUp Sound" is seasonal sound file that can be used to
play automatically when your extensions have loaded. It begins with the
ominous creaking of an old door that swings from left speaker to right as
suddenly a female scream is heard. Steam bursts from all over as a deep,
haunting voice slowly mumbles "Welcome..." and breaks into an evil laugh
as owls "whooo" in the distance from all directions. Windchimes can be
heard clanging through the steam and wind somewhere near as a distant
howl belts out, bringing the sound to a dark conclusion.

This file is available in both 16-bit/44.1kHz and 8-bit/22kHz versions,
and either can be downloaded here or at the Clixsounds web site at:

This file is freeware and redistribution of the archive in its entirety
is welcome. Instructions are included with the file for proper
installation. Note that a portion of the file is a catalog containing
information about the Clixsounds CD-ROM.

Subject: [*] CatFinder v2.0.1

CatFinder is a powerful disk management tool that catalogs your disks and
provides an intuitive Finder-like interface for browsing the catalogs.
Floppies, hard disks, CD ROMs, any disk can be cataloged. Once a disk is
cataloged you can quickly and easily browse it's contents without having
the disk mounted. CatFinder also offers powerful find and report
features that will help you find and organize your files.

Version 2.0 includes major functional enhancements including:

1. Drag and drop cataloging: Simply drag a disk icon onto the CatFinder
icon and it will be cataloged.
2. File and disk icons: CatFinder's views have a new look. CatFinder
will look up and display the appropriate icons for files. The icon that
CatFinder displays to represent a disk now reflects the type of disk.
3. Adjustable fonts: The fonts used in views and reports are adjustable.
4. More file and disk information: CatFinder catalogs and displays more
file information. You can now view, find, and report on file name, size,
type, kind, creator, label, creation date, and modification date.
5. More powerful find: The find feature has been significantly expanded
to allow for more complex searches.
6. Catalog reports: A new report called the "Catalog Report" has been
added. This generates a report on the disks that you have cataloged
including the disk name, size, free space, type, creation date,
modification date, number of files, and number of folders.
7. Reports on folders: File reports can now be generated on individual
folders as well as entire disks.
8. "Info" command: A command called "Info" has been added to the File
menu. This command is similar to the Finders "Get Info" command. "Info"
will display details about disks, files, and folders that you have
cataloged.

Subject: [*] CopyPaste 3.2J - Japanese Version

This is the Japanese version of the CopyPaste extension package.

One of the early wonders of the Mac was its revolutionary ability to do
copy and paste across various applications. Unlike other areas in the Mac's
system software that have changed and progressed over the years, copy and
paste has not evolved. How many times have you found yourself going back
and forth copying in one application and pasting in a different
application, wishing to yourself that you could copy 5-10 items at a time,
then go to another application and paste each of these items. Now you can!

Features include:

Multiple clipboards.
Clipboard manipulation.
Application Switcher.
Point and Click OR command key operation.
Preserve cliboard content through restarts.

Much, much, much, more...

FLOATING PALETTE (NEW)
$B!&(J By typing cmd + c + mouseclick you can call up the CopyPaste Palette a
floating window that stays in front of all applications. CopyPaste Palette
gives an easy access interface to all clipboards. CopyPaste Palette
contains a copy button and a paste button for each clipboard. To the right
of the copy and paste buttons is the clipboard content area where you can
see 25 characters of each clip. By doubleclicking the contents you can
display the CopyPaste Window and see more of the text or pict. The palette
can be opened from the CopyPaste Utilities menu also.

BUG FIXES
$B!&(J The french keyboard layout was not supported in earlier versions,
now it
works correctly.
$B!&(J Some Fax programs require pressing the ctrl key in order to use the fax
command from the file menu. In earlier versions this did not work with Tag
and Drop enabled. Now it works correctly.

Subject: [*] iofolders (folder icons)

"iofolders.nature.1" introduces folder art as unique and non-derivative
art. Each folder icon is approximately 3% of a digitized photograph
taken with a 35mm camera. This means that the principal "art" of folder
art is in the selection of subject on the photo just as the principal
"art" of photography is in the selection of subject in the real world.
This means it is difficult, if not impossible, for folder art to
infringe photo copyrights. (Copyrights are on the work as a whole as an
original work of art - you cannot copyright a single word in a sentence
or real world visual scene or a small, 3% fragment of a photo.)

Playing games over the internet? Then MyIPAddress is the utility for you.

If you play games over the internet then you know what a hassle it can
be when you are going to host a game and need to give your IP address to
your fellow players. You have to open your TCP/IP control panel, write
down your IP address, and then retype the IP address for your fellow
players. MyIPAddress is a small application which will now do all of
this for you.

MyIPAddress looks up your current IP address and then copies it to your
clipboard. To use it all you have to do is place the utility into your
=84Apple Menu Items=BE folder. Then when someone asks you for your IP
address all you have to do is select MyIPAddress from the Apple Menu.
MyIPAddress will instantly look up the address and copy it to the
clipboard. Then select paste from the edit menu or use the keyboard
shortcut cmd-v. It=BCs that simple.

MyIPAddress is $5 shareware.

Hey, if pro leagues will go to the trouble to force schools to not use pro

Subject: [*] PhotoMill

PhotoMill is a fully featured Macintosh image browsing application that
scans any drive or folder you specify, and catalogs images in all the major
file formats. Support for TIFF, EPS, PICT, JPEG, GIF, PhotoCD, and others
is included as well as the ability to use Claris XTND filters for files in
other formats. Once cataloged, you may keyword and classify the images,
search and sort based upon a variety of information, and even attach a
sound annotation to each picture.

PhotoMill takes full advantage of the Macintosh Drag and Drop capabilities.
Images in your catalog maybe quickly dragged into QuarkXPress documents or
even PageMill pages. A unique export option allows you to export any
catalog in an HTML format for display at your Web site. PhotoMill
automatically creates a Web page with a table layout identical to your
image catalog, exports all thumbnails and originals in JPEG or GIF format,
and creates the appropriate links between the thumbnails (on the Web page)
and the originals. PhotoMill is the ultimate tool to catalog and create
images in the proper format for your Web site.

The demo can only have 15 files in its catalog.

Subject: [*] Verbs & Nouns 1.2, Foreign Language Learning

Here is the new improved version of the "verbs-and-nouns" application.

"Verbs & Nouns" is an application that helps in foreign languages
studies.

The inflection of words is one of the difficult parts in learning many
foreign languages since there are a lot of inflection patterns.
"Verbs&Nouns" helps you in learning and gathering information about
foreign language verbs and nouns and their inflection rules. There are
also many other features of this program useful in learning and
research of foreign languages.

The program lets you define a foreign language verbs or nouns databases
and share them with other users. You can easily introduce the
inflection patterns (rules) for the regular words. You can also include
other information about each word like translation, grammar
characteristic, comments etc. in a very convenient form. Comments (you
can use many fonts and styles in the comment box) are useful to store
the example sentences associated with the given word and to include
some additional information. The feature of merging databases makes
sharing comments with other users very easy. Program automatically
generates exercises to practice the inflection or translation. You can
define many groups of words (and collect them in classes) to use them
in exercises, exams or for browsing. The program has asynchronous sound
support to associate the sound samples with words. There is an
examination support built into the program. This includes: accounts for
students and statistic of exams (performance of students). Exams can be
performed over the network or on the single Mac.

Subject: [Q] printer recommendations

Dear Mac-mavens,

I have the choice (as part of my start-up package) between purchasing the
following 2 printers for a mixed Mac/Unix environment:

* HP Laserjet 5M
* Apple Laserwriter 12/640 (black & white)

The latter is here about $500 cheaper than the former, which would buy
me the 2-sided printing gizmo. However, I have heard left, right, and
center that HP printers consistently last longer and require less
maintenance. Is this true?

Most of the printing will be TeX typeset documents and text --- plus
some graphics work.

And how would a HP Laserjet 5MP do, which costs about half as much as
the Laserjet 5M? I know it is much slower than the 5M and has a shorter
duty cycle, but apart from that?

Your comments are appreciated. This is probably the first and last chance
I have of getting a decent printer so I'd rather do it right, and not
buy something that dies 1 day after the warranty expires!

Many thanks in advance,

There are times when a command line would be so sweet....:-)

C:\data\ dir > dirlist.txt would be so easy.

Can anyone suggest a methodology to create a text file which contains the file
names in a folder? The file names are all in the MS DOS scheme of 8.3

What I need to do is repeatedly import 100's of text files into a database.

A direct reply would be appreciated if possible. Our NNTP server goes up and
down so often they call it YoYo....:-)

Thanks in advance,

Subject: Desktop printer access privileges?

I have installed Quickdraw GX on my 6100/60 (Sys 7.5.3, 72 Mb RAM).
Graphics that were taking 20 minutes to print on the LW LS 300 now take
only a minute or two.

When I double-click on the Desktop Printer icon to see the print queue,
however, I get the message 'The desktop printer "LaserWriter 300 GX"
could not be opened, because you do not have enough access privileges.' I
can't find anything about this in the documentation. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you're trying to copy an 800k disk, Richard. I'm not sure when
Diskcopy 4.2 stopped copying 800k disks (destroying the destination disk in
the process). Somewhere around the introduction of System 7.

I still use DiskCopy 4.2 for copying 1.4m disks. It is so prissy that it
won't complete anything but a perfect copy. For 800k disks, I use Norton
Utilities' "Floppier" program.

Hi netters-

I am looking for a formula editor to use with ClarisWorks 4.
The CW FAQ suggests MathType or Expressionist, since they
both support EGO, so they have nice integration with CW.
Has anyone experience with these (or any other products)?
I tried to find these online, but had no luck. Can they
still be bought, and if so, where and for how much?
Thanks in advance for any help you can supply.

I've recently gone to ISDN--the Japanese variant, INS 64, using NEC ATERM
45 DSU+TA boxes. That gives me two analog ports and a digital port per
phone line--a big improvement. All is now working well.

The only thing I'm missing about my old Global Village modem is being able
to fax from it. I do have a conventional fax, but sometimes the fax-modem
is very handy.

Is there software that would enable faxing directly over ISDN?

Dear Info-Mac'ers,
At work I use an XWindow client, and have grown fond of the sticky menus
(you know, when you click once and the menu stays up after you let go of

that does the same thing for a Mac? I would prefer something that does
only that (not a host of additional features, if possible), as I'm pretty

Subject: PowerCC vs. APS

Wednesday 16 October -96

Dear Mac friends,

Next year I will most certainly purchase a PowerMac clone. The models which
seem to be most interesting are:

PowerTower 200e from PowerComputing ($3595) and
APS M*Power 604e200 ($2599).

The PowerTower comes with:
1MB level-2 cache, 3 PCI slots, built-in ethernet, 16 MB RAM, 2MB VRAM,
8XCD ROM drive, 2GB HD

The M*Power comes with:
512K level-2 cache, 5 PCI slots, 24 MB RAM, 2MB VRAM, 8XCD ROM drive, 2.5GB HD

I have one question:
How come the price difference of $1000 ???
Is it due to the built-in ethernet of the PowerTower or are there any
other reasons that I've overlooked.

FYI:

David,

We've had this setup working successfully on several Macs attached to
several different scanners. I've found that what works most successfully
for us is to attach the Zip to the Mac with termination ON (use the
switch on the back). There's also a switch on the back to set the scsi
ID. The chooser isn't involved here at all.

Connect the scanner to the Zip. Set the ID to a different number (make
sure you use one not occupied by your other drives, CD-ROM, etc). I've
found that scanners need not be terminated, but Zip's tend to be fussy.
So against accepted practice, even though the Zip is first on the chain,
terminate IT. Most scanners use an external terminator; leave it off.

You Must start up the Zip drive before the Mac, but you should be able to
power up (and turn off) the scanner at will. I've done this with Quadras
and PowerMacs, and Microtek and Agfa scanners. YMMV. Good luck....

Subject: Seeking for internet service provider in U.S. (Q)

Dear Digest readers,
Anybody know of a service provider that offers the following:

1. Web page hosting (at least 5MB of space) with server side includes and
cgi-bin support?
2. flat monthly rate anywhere in the U.S (preferably under $30/month)?
3. toll free tech support (by phone) after 6pm eastern, and/or on weekends?
4. local dialup from anywhere in the U.S?
5. 28.8 modem support?
6. OpenTransport support?
7. Actual server is in midwest or east coast, and has a T-3 backbone or is
multihoned?
8. No busy signals?

I've been looking all over for such a provider, but so far only some of
these characteristics have been found but not all.

Thank you.

There are devices that will allow you to use, say, four 30-pin SIMMs in the
place of one 72-pins SIMM. These are advertised in the back on MacUser et.
al. regularly. One brand name that comes to mind is "SIMMSaver". I've
never used one, so can't comment on reliability.

I've never seen anything that would let a Mac possessing a single n-pin
SIMM slot use two n-pin SIMMs.
