SelectFolderIcons/DidjitIcons
Requires: Not much... System 7, 256 colors, Moxie (just a little).

You're gonna LOVE this excellent collection of beautifully hand-crafted 3-D
Folder and Disk icons.

Those of you who are already familiar with SelectColorIcons won't need ME
to convince them that this is a worthwhile download.

If you haven't yet seen the SelectColorIcons series, you're in for a rare
treat! Although, I must warn you, you may never want to go back to normal
desktop icons again!

Anyways, this is a collection of, hmmm... ...about 25 icons. Mostly Disk
and Folder types.

Included in this set are 10 icons from a new series, tentively called
SelectDidjits - a Folder and Disk Icon collection featuring little
humanoids (Didjits) incorporated into the designs.

They are whimsical, and some are even downright goofy, but most can be used
even in a business environment to impress clients or brighten somebody's
day. You say you've done 13 revisions on that last document and it STILL
has to go through the committees approval? I've got just the Folder for you
to send it to them in (Revisions).

These icons are presented to you pasted onto empty folders. For those who
have never customized their desktop icons, simple instructions are included
at the end of the ReadMe file. It's as easy as copy and paste!

I hope this latest collection will help you get that promotion, boost your
image in your friends eyes, get an A in class or just bring a smile to your
face. Either way, have a good time and try not to hurt anybody with them,
okay.

Thanks

AUTHOR: Yorick
NEEDS: System 7.0 or higher
EQUIPMENT: Any Mac, Pref. Color
TYPE: Shareware Appl; $25

Keywords: CUSTOM GRAPHIC DESKTOP PATTERN MENUBAR APPLE MENU ICONS TRASH CAN
BEEP

The Warper allows you to customize the visual aspects of your Macintosh
Finder according to your tastes in six different ways: desktop pattern
(tile), menubar pattern, apple menu icon, trash can, warning beep, and folder
icons. From underwater "Atlantis" to jungle scene - complete with monkey
beep, tree background, and Little Shop's "Audrey" trash can - the highly
detailed color and grayscale tiles and icons will make your Mac come alive!
The Warper application (396K) installs these changes via an 18K extension
(remaining download file is artwork). You can choose between 20 complete
preconfigurations, or create your own using the extensive bank of independent
graphic resources. You can use the Warper on all Macintosh models, from 16
gray levels up to millions of colors running on System 7.0 or later.

The coolest thing about the Warper is the extensive artwork. Based in
Paris, France and Woodside, California, artist Yorick spent many months
perfecting futuristic "Borg" ship, metal, stone, wood, and psychedelic
desktop transformations along with sound effects and tons of cool folder
icons. We put this "demo" version together to allow you to get to know the
Warper. This version has 1/4 of the graphic resources of the "full" version
(there are 562 different elements in the full version!) Enjoy!

We do give permission for inclusion on future archive CD-ROM's.

Subject: [A] HD Optimizers...

Norton Utilities comes with Speed Disk, which defragments and optimizes disks.
You can run it to check your disk first and then choose to defrag and
optimize.
It provides a colorful display of the contents of your drive so you can see how
it has fragmented. There's also an advanced mode feature that enables you to
find out how many fragments particular files have broken into.

Alsoft had a similar product. I think it was called DiskExpress. This was
rated by the Mac rags as the best disk optimizer, but I haven't noticed it
around
lately.

Either would work fine. As the name suggests, Norton Utilities includes a
suite
of useful utilities: tools for testing your mac, for recovering
deleted files, for recovering files after a crash, "CopyDoubler" (a faster
method
for copying or duplicating files), and various other tidbits. NU has become
"standard equipment" for a lot of Mac users. I find it essential.

Recently I just bought a 256k cache card and a 16MB DIMM for my Power Mac
7500/100 from Memory Merchant. Now, the installation of the 256k cache card
went flawlessly but I had a problem with the card. It's about 3/4 of a
centimeter higher than my other DIMMs. I know this wont impair its working
but the internal chasis won't go down all the way in the front (the latch
is to high to go in). It works fine and in about this mac and it displays
32MB but could the pressure on the dimm hurt it? I dont have anything on
top of the cpu, so there is no other weight.

Here's another cautionary tale:

I attempt to run the 7.5.5 Update on a relatively fresh Performa 5400/120
(factory-installed 7.5.3 Rev. 2). At the point of "Closing files...,"
there is a *long* pause, but the fingers on the little hand keep flipping
me off.

So, I leave the computer for half an hour, and return to find it frozen
where it was left in the install process. No problem, I'll just re-start
and try it again - except that now the computer will not boot from
whatever System remnants are left on the HD.

No problem, I'll just boot from the System CD, and *then* run the Update
- except that the internal (IDE) drive won't mount.

No problem, I'll just run the copy of Disk First Aid that Apple so
thoughtfully provided with the Update. Great! "'Performa 5400 HD'
appears to be OK." Except, the drive *still* won't mount.

No problem, I'll just use Drive Setup to mount the drive - except that
the Mount function churns for a little while, and then *doesn't* mount
anything, offering only the option to Initialize the drive (the Update
Driver option is grayed out).

No problem, I'll just run the latest and greatest version of Norton Disk
Doctor, which proceeds to examine the drive's file and directory
structures, with no problems found - *except* that at the very end the
program is unable to mount the drive. The Norton warning message
suggests either a re-start, a re-install of the disk's driver using the
original formatting program, and oh yes, "you might try re-initializing
the drive," it helpfully adds.

No problem, I'll just have Silverlining install one of *its* drivers, and
then instruct it to mount the errant drive - except that version 5.6.3
wants no part of an IDE drive.

Now I suspect that there *might* indeed be a problem. Five or six
repeats of the above steps still result in an unmountable drive.

Finally, I attempt to use Norton Unerase - which happily finds all 3,000
files and folders on the disk and shows them to be 100% recoverable - to
copy everything to an external hard drive that I have by now attached to
the computer (during one of the two dozen or more re-starts) ... except
that in doing so there is a long string of "Disk Errors" reported by
Norton (it doesn't say whether these are in reading from the IDE drive,
or *writing* to the external SCSI drive, but it appears to be the latter).

When all of these Error warnings have been dismissed, there appears on
the external drive a Recovered Items folder - except that when an attempt
is made to open it, the watch icon runs furiously for a few minutes, and
then the computer crashes. After the Desktop files on the external drive
have been deleted, a re-mount and Desktop re-build are begun.

An hour into this process, with absolutely *furious* (external) disk
activity going on, but with the progress bar having moved only about
two-thirds of the way to the right, I turn off the lights and go home.
As this is written, I have no idea of whether Disk Setup will actually
deign to re-initialize this drive, but if not, the whole thing is still
under warranty.

So is my backup of the drive, fortunately! My advice, then: Consider
doing a *complete* hard drive backup before attempting to install this
"benign" little beast that is the System 7.5.5 Update.

In the meantime, can anyone suggest how to recover gracefully from
this mess?

Best regards,

If you are a person running a Mac with a:

These processors are known to have datapaths or Buses equal to the internal

precludes Bus Errors or not. You see I've never had one of those
processors, and have intermittently encountered these errors.

Thank you.

Subject: Comparison of HTMLWord translation tools for MacOS

I have made a comparison of translation tools between HTML and
Microsoft Word for MacOS. My translation can be found at URL:
http://www.dsv.su.se/~jpalme/reports/HT ... ation.html.

Here is a short summary of the results:

Software tested under MacOS: Rtf-to-html version 3.0.1,
Microsoft Internet Assistant converters version 2.0, MacLinkPlus
version 8.1.

For conversion from Word to HTML, Microsoft Internet Assistant
was more automatic and more manipulative, but Rtf-to-html was
better at handling table of content and footnotes and if you
prefer a less manipulative conversion tool.

For conversion from HTML to Word Microsoft Internet Assistant
was better if you want to produce a HTML document and
alternately handle it in Word and HTML formats, while DataViz
MacLinkPlus was better if you want to make a one-time conversion
of an arbitrary HTML document into a Word document.

Subject: EPS files from M$ Word

Thanks much to Bo Parker, Mike Dustan, Arthur Snoke and Chaz Larson for
helping to resolve my problem of being able to "print" but one page at a
time, when using the LaserWriter 8.x driver to produce a saved EPS file.
This behavior actually turns out to be a "feature" of EPS:

On Tue, 24 Sep 1996, Chaz Larson wrote:

Although I had *thought* that straight .ps ("PostScript Job") files
exhibited this behavior as well, a double-check revealed that the
LaserWriter 8.x driver will indeed include All (or a specified range) of
pages within a saved *PostScript* file. BTW, in reply to a question
asked by one respondent, the Adobe Acrobat Distiller (2.1) seems just as
happy with EPS files as it does with plain old PostScript job files, but
it *is* capable of making multiple-page documents from the latter:

Actually, Distiller seems to handle EPS files just fine.

By and large I have had very *poor* results with this method, particularly

I highly recommend using a commercial tool. Optimizing a disk is a somewhat
dangerous task, as if something is going wrong, you can loose some (or even
all)
of your data. So before doing a defragmentation, you should do a backup or
at least an analysis and repair of the disk's data structures. Tools like
Central Point's MacTools Pro or Symantec's Norton Utilities do all of these
jobs very well. I'm using both of them, and they are nearly identical. So
it's your choice.

Happy Macing,
Oliver.

You can run 7.5 on an LC; just choose "Custom Install" from the 7.5
installer window's popup menu, then check only "Minimal System for this
Macintosh". If you know which extension the USWest software is looking
for (probably MacTCP, maybe AppleScript) then check those items as well.

BTW, the FAQ for this list recommends that you not use "help" or
"problem" or suchlike as a subject line. More descriptive subjects get

The real 'home made' technique: 'simply' type them in SimpleText. For larger
ones, you could use a Text editor, such as BBEdit. The original PDF file
format is Ascii. However, even a trivial PDF file is not easy to create
using this method. If you want to give it a try, get the file 'PFDSPEC.PDF'
>From Adobe's Web site. (note: doing this by hand is possible, but not
recommended at all. I haven't written more than a 'Hello, world!' example
this way. It should not be too difficult to create 100% Ascii PDF files

Much easier: Install QuickDraw GX, and get the latest beta of 'Tumbler'.
Tumbler is a utility to convert QuickDraw GX Portable Digital Documents into
PDF. It is not perfect, but it may do what you need to do.
tumbler can be found at ftp://ftp.ixmedia.com//GX_FTP/utilities/Tumbler06d5.sit

Subject: Mac zip disk (Storage size discrepancies)

>Iomega promises 100Mb per disk. But mac formatted zip disks are at an
>average of 95Mb only, are we short changed? Curious about the answer if
>anyone has it. Thank you

Ok, this issue comes up in various places now and then, related to almost
any kind of storage media. The following discussion is relevant to most
storage media, including zips, hard drives, etc.

There are several issues that affect the difference between the advertised
disk size, and the actual disk size as it is seen by the user.

The first and most important reason is that there are two different
definitions for "kilo" and "mega" used. As you are aware, a kilo-something
is a thousand times something. A kilogram is 1000 grams. And similarly
"mega" means a million; a thousand times a thousand.
The storage industry (in this particular case Iomega) uses these definitions
for indicating and advertising the capacity of their disks.
But in the computer, slightly different definitions are used, and a kilobyte
is equivalent to 1024 bytes, and a megabyte is 1024 kilobytes, and 1,048,576
bytes. There is almost a 5% difference between the two megabytes used.
For the practical case here, this means that when you take the 100 megabytes
on a zip disk, and then use the computer definition of megabyte on the
100,000,000 bytes available, you get about 95.37 computer-megabytes.

A second reason is that a certain amount of space has to be sacrificed in
the formatting of the disk. Think of it as the lines in your agenda, which
tell you where to write, and where to go when you want to read about a
certain day. Only in this case, the colour of the lines is the same as the
colour of your ink. This also takes some space, though I can't be exact
about the amounts.

The last reason I'll mention is that at the start of the disk, there are
a few information blocks that contain information critical to the
operation of the drive. The driver is stored there, as are things like
the partition map.
These items usually take up a few hundred kilobytes.

One can hardly blame the storage industry for adhering to the official
definitions for their measurements. First it's an official standard, and
secondly, it makes their numbers look better.

This does make for some confusion among users, who can see a 6% difference
beteen the advertised megabytes, and the actual ones, and this can go to
8% for gigabytes, and over 10% once you start counting terrabytes.

I hope I have managed to enlighten some people.

Subject: Mount Windows NT 200MB SyQuest on Mac?

Our heretofore all-Mac facility recently had to purchase
a task-specific hardware/software package running on Windows NT platform.
The equipment is video image processing/graphics and is
able to save image files in various formats, including TIFF.
There is a 200MB SyQuest drive onboard; we also have
200MB SyQuest drives on our Macs. We would like to use our
Mac-based software to open up and exchange TIFF's on the NT SyQuests.
No can do. The Macs (Quadra 950's thru 9500's) do not recognize or
mount the NT SyQuests. Tried using FWB HDT to create a tiny Mac partition,
Mac sees and mounts the Mac partition only, ignoring the NT FAT partition.
Have also set PC Exchange to scan and install driver for the drive's
SCSI address.
PC Exchange doesn't seem to be helping us here. Any suggestions
on how to do this or should we just get the darn Ethernet cards
or use lots of floppies (which seem to work just fine)?

That set me to thinking. I couldn't imagine Apple NOT putting in a copyright
notice, so I thought I should look at the font again, and found (buried
somewhere in the middle of it) the following copyright notice:

New YorkRegularApple Computer New York RegularNew York1.0NewYork 1990-91 Apple

So, I stand corrected. New York is a TrueType font which is a copyrighted
portion of System 7. MHT adds:

> Plus your System 7 license prevents you from making a derivative
> work (e.g., font conversion) from any System 7 product.

So, in that case, you can't legitimately use a font utility like FontMonger to
convert it to Type 1 (unless you obtain Apple and Font Bureau's written
permission first).

Cheers!

Unfortunately I currently don't have an AppleTalk network to try this out
on first, so I can only offer some untested ideas.

Is there a "file sharing" folder in your Preferences folder? Try deleting
it or moving it out of the Preferences & System folders.

If that doesn't fix it, can you manage to temporarily network your Mac to
another Mac? If you can, there are a couple of things you could try.

First, if the dialog box gives the name of the server (computer) and disk
to which your Mac is trying to connect, you could try tricking your Mac
into thinking that the server and disk are present on the network. Just
change the "Macintosh Name" and the name of a disk to have the names that
your Mac is looking for. Also make sure the other Mac will allow "guest"
access to everything. The settings ought to be in Sharing Setup and Users
& Groups. Then restart your Mac and see if it is able to mount the shared
disk that it's been trying to find. If it does, go into the Chooser and
tell it to stop connecting to that disk, and your problem should be solved.
Remember to set everything back to normal afterward on both Macs.

If that doesn't work, then maybe you can isolate the file(s) where the
information is being stored that causes your Mac to try to connect to a
shared disk. Set everything up so you can access files on the other Mac.
Then set your clock ahead a couple hours or days, go into the Chooser, and
tell it to attach to a shared disk on the other Mac; remember to tell it to
auto-connect to that disk upon startup. Close the Chooser. Now just look
through the System Folder, Preferences Folder, Extensions Folder, etc.,
using "View by Date". You're looking for anything that got created or
changed on the fake date. (That's why I said to set the clock ahead right
before you connect to a shared disk -- it'll make it easier to spot the
files that got changed.) If you trash the files that got changed, it
should fix your problem. Remember to reset the clock and set everything
else back to normal on both machines.

While you're doing all this, you might want to write down all the settings
before changing them, to make it easier to put them back the way they were.

Subject: Problem with TDK 2814 Modem and PB5300c (Q)

I am having problems with modem connections using a TDK 2814 on my PB5300c.

When I connect to the Internet using either SLIP or PPP my connection is
extremely slow. This is most apparent when using Netscape. Whilst I am
downloading a page, the whole computer seems to freeze for several seconds
(clicking on ohter windows or trying to something else does nothing) then
carries on downloading for a few seconds. The same happens when I download
my mail using Eudora. I use a data transfer rate of 57,600 with cts/rts
flow control and an init string is AT&F&D0(zero):T42=4.
I do notice that the card gets very warm during usage and do not know if
this is related. The problem is indicative of a buffer that is waiting to
be filled up?? or alternatively that there is some error checking taking
place? I do not think a noisy telephone system is the problem as I get the
same problem on every line I use (I have tried connecting in the UK, USA,
Japan, Portugal, and Belgium). In addition, I tried the modem on my
telephone at home where I have a desktop Mac with a US Robotics modem and
the problem still occurs (the PowerMac and US Robotics work fine off this
same line).

I initially thought that my PB was the problem, however, I have just had it
fixed under the PowerBook repair program and the problem still exists (I
have System 7.5.3). I have just purchased a Dayna ethernet card and when I
connect this PCMCIA card there is no problem with the connection. when I
connect to the Internet.

I suspect the problem is related to the modem or how I have configured it.
Any ideas?

Dear Info-Netters,
following my recent plea for help I can announce that my
drive is working again!
Though this can of course be of limited interest to you (apart some
simpathethic happiness), I send this message to say that it seems that all
the problems derived from a huge amount of dust in the drive iself. As
already pointed out many times on the list, drives are the place where dust
likes to collect inside our Macs...
Head cleaning (those of the drives, of course, mine is just fine ;-) )
proved of course not effective in this case...

Therefore, I made my way inside my Mac CI to check things better and I
found that the drive was full of dust... I carefully removed the dust
and... lo and behold, the drive is working again!
I had to get the drive out of my Mac, and, though from now on it will an
easy job for me, it was not as easy as I would have liked. I had to remove
the power supply (easy...), the internal HD (about easy), unscrew the
plasti holder of FD and HD, remove it form the cabinet, and then get the
drive. Each operation is not that difficult, but finding the right
combination of moves took a while, especially if you are a bit worried of
touching the wrong things...
In this case I would say that (urghh... how to put this...) PC clones are
much easier to deal with. I would have just had ot slide the FD out of the
case, clean it and put it back in place, instead of completely dismantling
my Mac (in the end only the logic board was left in the cabinet...). I hope
newer Macs are more accessible...

Thank you so much for your kind help (which was prompt as usual)!

I dont think this is a universal problem, I have used CSM 2.32 and System

I got FreePPP 2.5v2, and it works like a dream. Knowing how touchy these
things are, I was pleasantly surprised to have it practically install
itself with just a few simple things to reset in the configuration.

Regarding Eudora's segmenting of the InfoMac Digest, I learned something
new. If one uses the "Save as" command after highlighting the three
segments, they're saved as one text file, ready for EasyView. Wow, this is
easy! Also, for others with my problem (missing last message in EasyView),
there is a patch called EasyView 2.62 patch which solves this problem,
available in the IM archives.

There was also a suggestion about Eudora 3.0, which I'll check out (in my
spare time!). Since I read three lists, some of the 3.0 features may be
useful and time saving.

Thanks too to Gordon, who patiently waited three tries worth for me to
remember to turn off my sig file. In Eudora it's automatic, whereas in Pine
(my old system) I had to use Signature Quote to have a sig at all. Sorry
for the waste of time!

Many thanks again - what a great helpful group.
