Subject: [*] [*] Polish Nouns - Polish language teaching program

The declension of nouns is one of the difficult parts of the Polish
language grammar since there are many inflection patterns. "Polish Nouns
- Part 1" is a "plug-in" database for the "Verbs & Nouns" application.
It helps you learn and refresh your knowledge about the declension rules
and usage of Polish nouns. This is the third program in my "Polish for
Everyone" project.

The predefined database contains almost 8000 Polish nouns (from letter a to p)
You can freely add new nouns and modify existing ones. You can easily add
comments to every noun. This is convenient to store the example sentences
associated with the given noun. The declension rules are presented for all
8000 nouns. The translation is available for the first 1000 nouns (it will be
updated). There is a pattern editor, so you can just assign a predefined
pattern to your newly introduced noun. You can associate sound (record sound
using a microphone and play it back) with each noun. There are several sound
options available. The program has an exercise window. It is useful to
determine if your knowledge is sufficient. You can practice declension as
well as translation during the exercises. You can keep the nouns
that you have learned already in a separate list and let the program generate
exercises just for this group of nouns. There is also a possibility to define
many custom groups of nouns that meet certain criteria. There are more than
300 predefined groups of nouns in the database already. These cover almost
all declension sub-patterns (they are split into three classes: masculine,
feminine and neuter). There are also 20 thematic groups of nouns like:
Business
Related, On the Road, In the Town, Clothes, Food an Drink, Human Body,
Medicine and Health, and more... You can also attach databases updated by
other users to your own nouns database (to share comments, sound and adding
new nouns).

In order to be able to use the "Polish Nouns" database you
should have the "Verbs & Nouns" application and follow the instructions
>From this
application. This application allows you to use databases for several
languages.
You can download this program from the same place as this database.

Program can be useful in language learning, teaching and research of Slavic
languages.

Subject: [*] Aaron Hi-Tech Patch 1.5.1

This patch will update (i.e., CHANGE) ~Aaron v1.5.1
to ~Aaron 1.5.1HT, which replaces the blue-ish 3D-
looking system folders with the black Hi-Tech look
that's kind of been the second-most publicized interface
design for the upcoming Mac OS 8.

The publishers of Aaron have nothing to do with this
patch, and as far as it's totally FREEWARE, I'm not
going to support it either! :-) The standard disclaimers
apply, all boiling down to "patch a COPY of your ~Aaron
file so you can restore if anything SHOULD go wonky."

In all seriousness, all it does it swap the icons. It should
work on any Mac that ~Aaron works on. It's been tested
on a 6100/60 and a 7500/100.

There are Hi-Tech folder resources for Folder Icon Maker
out there that would, when working with a copy of ~Aaron
patched with this utility, will help you build a totally "hi-
tech" set of icons for your Desktop. The FIM resources
are elsewhere on the Info-Mac archives and online service
file areas.

--------- cut here for X-Words announcement ----------

Subject: X-Words 1.2 - a meta-Scrabble-like word game

X-Words is a meta-Scrabble-like word game for 1 to 4 players.
You can play against other people or the Mac, or get the Mac to play
against itself (great fun to watch and a good way to learn how to play).
X-Words has many useful features:

- Change the board size.
- Change the color and/or location of special squares on the board.
- Change the frequency and/or value of any letter.
- Set the Mac skill level from 0 (novice) to 9 (expert).
- Ask to see the highest scoring move or the best strategic move.
- Undo and redo moves.
- Save games for later recall.
- Keep game statistics.

A number of different word lists are supplied (all can be modified):

- "Words" (the default) has about 40,000 words suitable for adults.
- "For Kids" has 2,000 words suitable for children aged 5 to 7.
- "For Juniors" has 10,000 words for children aged 8 and up.
- "Lots of Words" has over 110,000 words for expert players.

One of the changes in 1.2 is the ability to use the keyboard to move
letters to the board. This can be much quicker than dragging tiles.
For a complete list of changes, see the Version History topic in the
About box (text in this box can now be copied to the Clipboard).

X-Words is a fat application that runs on everything from a Mac Plus
up to a Power Mac. It looks best on a large color monitor but will
work quite happily on anything else. X-Words is shareware ($20).

Subject: [*] Avara Installer

Once again, Berserkir sat, licking his wounds and nursing his pride. An
unsavory defeat against his nemesis, Achilles, had left a bitter taste in
the haughty warrior's mouth. Under a furrowed brow however, Berserkir's
thoughts dwelt upon revenge, not defeat.

Time would pass and again, at Mount Stonehammer they met. Two warriors,
side by side, walking with the purposeful continence that only the
spectre of death could imbue. The trees were still. The birds were
quiet. Even Father Wind held his breath in silent anticipation of the
struggle that would shake the very mountaintops. Focusing on all the
training he had endured and with strong will and determination, he
conquered the mighty Achilles. Father Wind breathed a sigh of relief as
the battle ended, carrying the soul of Achilles on the heels of his
autumn breeze.

Are you prepared for battle? Are you ready for Avara? With its fast and
furious action and unique 3D game play, you can't help but be absorbed in
the game. Avara's real-time graphic action will start your heart
pounding as you see your opponent gracefully bound across the terrain and
quickly swoop in behind you. Using both the mouse and keyboard, you have
complete 360 degree control to counter-maneuver and quickly target your
enemy. Players aren't limited to 'sliding' around in predetermined mazes
like in many of the older 3D games. Avara's maneuverability is unique,
allowing its warriors to freely climb, jump, and run on any of the
structures in the battlefield.

Add to this Avara's networkablity, and the game gets even more
interesting. Avara allows you to meet and play against people from all
around the world, right over the Internet. Develop your skills and
strategy in the many solo levels, and when you are ready, access the
Avara Internet Tracker to locate worthy opponents. The Tracker offers
users a continually updated list of Avara games in progress all over the
net. Avara can also be played across LAN (Local Area Network)
connections, for those not brave enough to step out into the maelstrom of
Internet battle.

With Avara, you are also able to design your own battlefields. The only
limiting factor to your gaming experience is your imagination. Using the
objects and structures that are provided, and an easy-to-follow manual,
designing levels for Avara is a snap. You will never get tired of Avara
due to this expandability; it is a game that is always growing. New and
exciting levels, from those who want to show off their creative and
imaginative accomplishments, will spread all over the Internet.

Price: $20.00
Requires: 256 Color Screen, 040 or PowerPC recommended

This stack is one of a series designed to entertain a young child
and help develop mouse skills. My inspiration was Diane Bundy's My

Subject: [*] DesignerDraw 5.0

Version 5 of DesignerDraw has a more up-to-date looking user interface,
with floating palettes replacing the old fixed selection boxes. It also
supports color, and has some neat looking (IMHO) 3D-ish shading effects,
if you want to use them.

DesignerDraw supports Drag&Drop text editing, provided that you have the
drag&drop extension loaded or are using System 7.5 or later. You can
drag text within a box, between boxes, or from and to other applications
that support drag&drop (such as SimpleText). You can also create new
boxes by dragging text to an empty space on the diagram.

Other than that, the feature set is pretty much the same as in earlier
versions, although there are a few improvements here and there (such as
you can now change font, style and size for several boxes at the same
time).

Bug reports can be sent to me at 71340,1210 on Compuserve (or

Subject: [*] Diktafon 1.1.1 (Fat)

What is Diktafon?
----------------
Diktafon records sounds to your hard drive and features a convenient
built-in text editor. Diktafon is useful for transcribing or dictation
purposes. For instance, you want to send an audio letter to your mother,
but you also want to keep a written record of it. Or perhaps you have
recorded a conversation or TV program on tape, and you want to write
down the dialogue. Diktafon is your answer!

In this all-in-one program, you can play, pause, rewind, and
fast-forward the sound while typing into the built-in text editor,
eliminating the need for separate sound- and text-editing applications.
The text editor allows you to change the size and style of the text. It
can save the text into the sound for later editing, and it has the
ability to export the text for use in other applications.

Legal Stuff
----------
Diktafon is freeware, which means you don't have to pay for it, but I
retain copyright. Just credit me by placing a link to my homepage on
your homepage (http://www.raum.com/maction/) or by sending me an eMail.
I assume no responsibility for the use of or inability to use Diktafon.

Droids is a really fun strategy game where you battle against
successively more intelligent and adaptive androids to regain control
of Terra. The most primitive of the android models, the Sexus, is
highly deterministic and not all that intelligent. But science
advances and so do androids. For a much greater challenge, try out
Super Droids, where you'll also meet the Plexus and Nexus androids. Not
only are they more intelligent, they're also more technologically
advanced.

Droids requires: System 7.0 or greater; at least a 68020 Mac; 256

1.5 Meg of hard disk. Droids is shareware and it only costs 15 bucks!

Subject: [*] JB's Lode Runner Levels 1.0.1

This is an update to JB's Lode Runner Levels, a collection of 10 Lode
Runner levels that I created for the commercial game Lode Runner. They are
of medium to high difficulty. All levels have been tested by a third
party, so they are possible to solve.

If you have solved all the regular puzzles in Lode Runner, you should not
have too much trouble with my levels. All ten levels combined should
provide most players with about 1-2 hours of game time.

This updates my e-mail and homepage info, as well as a few minor changes to
the levels to improve playability.

Enjoy!

Subject: [*] LetterWorld 1.9.8a - An educational childrens game

Letter World is a children's game designed to help them learn
associations of letters and words (as well as keep them entertained for
awhile). At least 1 Meg of ram should be used to run the game, but 1.2
Meg is suggested and 1.5 Meg is best. It should work with most
macintosh systems. The game will work in black and white, but color is
a lot snappier (i.e. big nifty factor for the kids).

This release is an Alpha release, which means that it has not been fully
tested and all the new features have not been finished yet. This is
where I need your help. Please try out the game and let me know what
features you would like to see added for the final version.

enough Math Market money to burst the piggybank. The problems include a
choice of (Number Order) using the numbers 1-100, (Addition) using the
numbers 1-9, (Subtraction) using the numbers 1-9, and (Multiplication)
using the numbers 1-9.

Directions can be read at every area of the game.

Subject: [*] MicNotePad

MicNotePad is an easy to use, enhanced, digital tape recorder. Its
significant features are: It also is a transcriber. It works. It is easy
to use. It works in the background. It uses only half a megabyte of RAM.
70 pages on-screen user guide are built in.

MicNotePad is being used for dictation, transcription, and archiving.
MicNotePad is being used to record test flights, interviews, lectures,
meetings, performances, and kids.

To fully explore MicNotePad, switch to both Large View and Full Menus. In
spite of its ease of use and reliability, MicNotePad's long list of
features include superior sound quality, yet one hour fits into only 14MB,
adjustable sound formats, optional automatic playback, rewinding, and
locking, unique markers, sound check, adjustable sound input gain level,
adjustable key combinations, adjustable playback speed while keeping
original pitch, notification, selection of sound input device, AppleScript
scriptability, drag and drop onto email messages, playback of many aif, au,
wav, and system sound files, some optimization to allow transfer from and
to audio tapes, compatibility with global search engines, totally
transparent compatibility across the hardware platform from the PowerBook
140 to the Power Macintosh 9500. It even allows to use regular external
microphones with the PowerBook 5300 series without using any hardware
adapters.

Balloon Help often clarifies when minor features are not available on
specific Macintosh models and describes some more power features.

MicNotePad is a speech product that is well integrated into the word
processing paradigm. Other than most other speech products, it works for
any language, accent, number of speakers, background noise, or topic.
Beyond uses in journalism, legal and medical transcription, and higher
education, it also serves well in language study, speech therapy, with
attention deficit disorder, and for creative writing.

Limitations: This free MicNotePad Lite 3.7.1 does not function in Japan.
Also, for any Mac model that will be introduced after summer of 1996 you
might have to come back for a newer version. If that occurs, then it is
obvious immediately, and you can send an e-mail to the authors to
accelerate development of a new version (your vote for the budget). The
authors hope to remove such limitations upon clearance of certain
contractual issues sometime soon.

September 16, 1996 - OutLinerCGI (tm) version 1.0 is a shareware CGI
to allow Macintosh WebMasters to easily create dynamic interactive
outlines on the web. OutLinerCGI was developed by Jon S. Stevens,
WebMagus for Clear Ink.

OutLinerCGI uses the power and flexibility of the UserLand Frontier
(tm) application environment to allow WebMasters to put Frontier
outlines on the web. Creating a new OutLiner is as simple as creating
an outline within Frontier using the OutLinerCGI Frontier suite.
No Frontier programming or WebStar setup is needed.

OutLinerCGI can be best demonstrated by the online example webpage
located at:

http://www.clearink.com/OutLinerCGI.outl

>From the example page, there is a link to the location where a fully
functional demonstration version of OutLinerCGI can be downloaded and a
link to the UserLand Frontier website where the free Frontier 4.0.1 can
be downloaded.

OutLinerCGI will work with any Macintosh WebServer that supports
the Frontier CGI Framework.

Pricing for OutLinerCGI has been set at US$50 with site and
worldwide licenses available as well. Orders will be ONLY processed
with the Kagi Register application enclosed with the demonstration
version. Please do not try to phone myself or Clear Ink to place an order.

Subject: [*] PictMerge2.0 picture management utility

This program addresses an annoying characteristic in the Finder. Many
times I'm in the situation where I have two folders full of stuff and
want to combine the contents of both folders. What I normally would do
is open one folder, do a Select All, and drag the contents to the
destination folder.

This is fine and dandy if there are no duplicate file or folder names,
but if there are, I get the dreaded message "Some items in this
location have the same names as items you're moving. Do you want to
replace them with the ones you're moving?"

Well what if I don't want to replace them, but move only the files
without duplicate names? How about if there are subfolders with
duplicate names and rather than replacing the old folder I just want
the contents of the new files automatically moved into the existing
subfolder? The Finder does not provide for these two options and so
PictMerge was born.

What is PictMerge
PictMerge is a drag/drop utility for merging contents of two folders.
When two folders are selected and dropped onto PictMerge, the contents
of the second folder will be moved to the first folder. The merging
process is recursive and if duplicate files are encountered they are
simply left in their original locations. Empty subfolder will be
automatically deleted from the source folder.

Registration & Distribution
This is a freeware. I do ask that you send me a postcard or at least an
email. If you find this program useful, please share it with your
friends.

I like to hear from my users. Your comments and suggestions are what
motivates me to working on this and other programs.

Subject: [*] Protein Synthesis - Digest Version

Protein Synthesis - Digest Version is a shorter version of the freeware
cartoon submitted under the title "Protein Synthesis Cartoon 1.4." The
latter is a "two-reel" cartoon containing many side-loops dealing with such
corollary topics as amino acid structure, energy requirements, ribosome
structure, ribosome binding sites, and so forth. The "digest version"
requires only a single reel and leaves out most of the instructional
digressions. The digest shows the synthesis of a short polypeptide
consisting of 3 amino acids. The cartoon shows all steps from Initiation
through Release.

Unlike the longer cartoon, this digest version does not explain the "cast
of characters" -- so viewers must be sufficiently familiar with protein
synthesis to be able to recognize amino acids, mRNA, tRNAs, ribosomal
subunits without detailed explanation.

You will need ResEdit to do it all. And, as an added bonus, Trash2Loo

- The patched Iomega Driver no longer complains when you start
up with your Zip drive turned off, and more generally when no
Iomega drive is found at startup. The driver is still not
loaded, but you won't get the annoying error message at the end
of the startup process.

- The patched Iomega Guest application no longer displays a
message when the driver is successfully loaded, so you don't
have to click OK or type Enter every time you load the driver
after startup.

New in 4.3.2:
- Updated for the new 4.3.2 drivers from Iomega.

New in 4.3 rev 2:
- Also disables startup messages issued when the Iomega driver
is loaded directly from a Zip disk before the Iomega Driver
extension loads. This typically occurs after a crash, or if
you insert a Zip disk immediately after the Mac is restarted
or switched on.

Subject: help

Hi, I am new at this and I have a problem. I stumbled on your site while
searching.
I have a friend in Salt Lake who I am trying to get set up on the
internet with her LC Mac so we can e-mail each other.I thought I had the
problem solved when I opened an account with US West for her(they have a
good price for state employes & she is a school teacher, AOL was too
expensive);however, when she received the software, it would not instal
because it said she needed system 7.1.1 or better. She has 7.1. I have
7.5 on my Power Mac, but that takes too much memory for her LC. Could
you point me in the right direction to find system 7.1.1 or 7.2 on
disks? I don't know where to look. Thanks for any help you can give me.
The long distance charges from Montana to UT are getting expensive!
Thanks again. Bob Muth

Subject: Mac SE and inkjet printer software compatibility

I just bought a Mac Stylewriter 1200, never imagining the software
would be incompatible with my SE
68000 processor. Could you give me any info on which
inkjet printers on the market, if any, are compatible
with the Mac SE
68000 processor? Thank you very much.
