Subject: [*] ConvertUnits v1.5.1 metric measurements unit conversions calcul

CU Pro is a measurements unit conversions calculator containing many
hundreds of metric/S.I., imperial, U.S., and other units in its database,
most to 14 digit precision. New units can be added. Supports
ft/in/fractions, scientific notation and control of significant digits. Can
also convert currencies, clock times, and many physical constants. On-line
info on the history and development of modern measurement systems.

ConvertUnits Pro 'Lite' is a fully functional measurement unit conversion
program with an initial 25 conversion limit allowing access to any of the
over 1500 units in the database. After this initial trial period, a reduced
data set of 57 units will remain operational indefinitely.

ConvertUnits Pro 'Lite' is shareware that can be obtained from us or
downloaded from various worldwide web shareware repositories, and can be
upgraded to the full version by making payment of $39.95 by check or money
order. We will then send you a unique I.D. code by fax or e-mail within
approximately 24 hours of purchase, which you can use to enable the program
to full status. ConvertUnits Pro=81 'Lite' download file is approximately
500k (remember, the full database is built into the program).

If you find the shareware version useful but do not wish to upgrade to the
full version, we ask for a $10 registration fee, payable by check or money
order. If you decide to upgrade, you will be credited $15 for being so
honest.

We encourage you to distribute ConvertUnits Pro=81 'Lite' as widely as you l=
ike!

=46eature List:

* 1500 measurement units organized hierarchically in 100 "modes" (Length,
Volume, Area, Force, Pressure, and many others) and nine "categories"
(Basics, Electricity, Time, Unit Costs & Quantities, and Whimsy).
* Over 120,000 different conversions are possible.
* Commonly used compound units such as: "tons, pounds, and ounces", "hours,
minutes, and seconds", and "feet, inches and fractions"
* 58 physical constants such as: "speed of light" and "gravitational
acceleration"
* Convert clock times between any two of over 200 locations in the world,
in standard or 24-hour format
* Trivia conversions in the "Whimsy" category, to answer such important
questions as: "How many times higher is Mount Everest than the Washington
Memorial?", or "How much would I weigh on Jupiter?"
* Currency conversions
* Significant figures vs. "calculator" display.
* U.S./English vs. International number formatting (commas vs. spaces). and
more...

FracPPC is a free fractal generation program for the Power Macintosh. It
will only run on Macs equipped with the PowerPC processor.

FracPPC v1.1 can generate zooms of the Mandelbrot Set and the associated
Julia sets. It allows export of the images as PICT files and editing of the
color map.

FracPPC v1.1 is a bug fix release (the previous version was FracPPC
v1.1b1). In brief, the folowing improvements were made:

- Low memory conditions are handled much more gracefully.
- Color Map Editor is now fully functional.
- Printing is fixed.
- Preferences are now saved (and a few new prefrences were added.

See the documentation enclosed in the FracPPC archive file for more details.

Galactica is a shareware strategy game based on exploration and
colonization of the galaxy. It supports multiplayer games, either on a
single computer or on a network using file sharing. It runs on Macs with
System 7.0 or later, 1 MB free RAM, and Color Quickdraw, preferably 256
colors or more. It will not run on on the Plus, SE, Classic, or PowerBook
100. The music requires Quicktime with MIDI support. It is a fat binary
that contains 68k and PowerPC support.

Version 1.0.8 fixes several problems with earlier versions. It now runs on
PCI based Macs.

Subject: [*] MacHeliodon 3.0.2; Sun position and shadow calculator

MacHeliodon is a sun position and shadow analyzer that will quickly and
easily calculate and graphically indicate, in sectional view, the shading
effects for an overhang of a user's design, for any time, day, and location
on earth. It will also calculate and display sun path diagrams and position
tables.

MacHeliodon allows architects and building designers to evaluate many
overhang designs in a matter of minutes with much more convenience and
accuracy than the conventional sun path diagrams most designers now rely
on. MacHeliodon has more than 50 major cities in its database and new
locations can be easily added by the user.

Solar, Standard, and Daylight Savings time systems are built in. Multiple
shadows at two hour intervals can be displayed for overhangs, as well as
shadows cast on the ground plane by a 'gnomon' at one hour intervals. Sun
charts can be generated showing sun position in the sky at one hour
intervals.

Shadow length and sun position data can be generated in tabular form and
saved as tab delimited text files for export to spreadsheets and word
processors.

MacHeliodon is also valuable to anyone who is affected by the changing
location of the sun: photographers, farmers, gardeners, solar heating
engineers, lighting engineers, amateur astronomers... the list goes on.

MacHeliodon requires 1.6 MB of RAM, system 6.0.4 or later and will run on a
PowerMac.

Subject: "Burst"ing digests

>ps. Is "burst"ing what INFO-MAC does? The digest is broken into many
>individual messages,
> rather than one huge message...

Exactly. Eudora 3 will do this automatically with MIME digests (like
info-mac) but it won't do it for any other sort of digest. At the moment,
most digesters (listserv, majordomo, etc) don't generate MIME, they
either generate rfc1153, or rfc934, or some ad hoc format. In these
cases, Eudora's MIME handling doesn't help. The Burst service tries to
fill that gap by providing integrated bursting for non-MIME digest
formats.

> if this is what bursting is, I like it!

Me too, that's why I wrote the extension :)

Note that Burst is an Extended Service, which is a new protocol for
Eudora 3.0. It's not a "plug-in" in the older sense, and it won't work
with Eudora 1.x or 2.x. For older versions of Eudora, you can get
bursting via MailConverter, which runs as a separate application.

Burst and MailConverter are both freeware, and they're both available on
info-mac mirrors in the comm/inet/mail/ folder.

I too upgraded from 7.5.3 to 7.5.5 with LaserWriter 8.4 already installed,
on a PB520 w/ Apple PPC upgrade (which is supposed to be just like a
PB5300). Exactly the same symptoms! Tried to reinstall LW 8.4 with no
improvement. Then I ran a complete Conflict Catcher analysis and found that
"Desktop Printer Extension" (v2.0) was the culprit, with assistance from
"LaserWriter 8" (v8.4).

Further analysis found that when a print job was queued (even from a
previous startup), the background application "Desktop PrintMonitor" was
continuously being launched and closing (no indication in the menu, but you
could watch its Finder icon alternating greying and clearing up). This
explains the constant disk activity and probably explains the keystroke
buffer losses. Removing these two files and restarting removes all
problems. I tried using LaserWriter 8.3.4 (with the Desktop Printer
Extension and Monitor), but that was no better. I am now running with 7.5.5
and LaserWriter 7.2 (old print monitor, no desktop anything). It works fine
and I don't really miss the desktop printer icons, but 8.4 does print
faster. I repeat - with this "fix" my PB520/PPC runs well with 7.5.5 - no
other problems.

Anyone have a better fix? I thought that one could use LaserWriter 8
without the Desktop PrintMonitor, but that doesn't seem to work for me.

Subject: 7.5.5 problem

I ran the 7.5.5 system updater on my 7600/132 running System 7.5.3
yesterday and immediately got a nasty error: the alert claimed there was
not enough memory in my 51-meg machine to open the window "Finder." I
worked my way through other alerts and was able to force-quit the Finder
and get at the menus to quit properly. I then ran Conflict Catcher, which
found a conflict between Finder Scripting Extension 7.5.3 and Control Strip
1.3.5. This seems very odd. Do I perhaps need a later version of one or
both?

Anyway, moving Finder Scripting Extension to load earlier in the startup
sequence seems to have solved the problem.

Subject: 7.5.5 Upgrade (C)

Folk, my own admittedly limited experience with the 7.5.5 upgrade:

I'm widely known for my even temper (choke, chortle, gasp), but last
evening I was downright annoyed at the upgrade. I'm not as annoyed now.

Oddly enough it worked fine on the oldest computer in the stable, my
home IIci. Then I applied it to the newest, my PB5300cs, and it killed
the computer. ILLEGAL INSTRUCTION. Hmmm. I restarted with extensions off,
and the machine worked. Okey Dokey, what's the conflict?

I used Extensions Manager to turn off all but 7.5.5, and the machine died.
Then I turned off everything, and the machine died. Hmmm. I guess I hadn't
realized that an EM "all off" was not the same as booting with extensions
off. Live and learn.

Gee am I glad I spent the time to create the 13 7.5.2 install disks when
I got the PB. It sure didn't come with a CD. Gee was I truly irrigated at
having to rebuild my PB's system from scratch. Install 7.5.2 from floppies.
Isn't that what they do to political prisoners in third world countries?

Then upgrade the PB to 7.5.3 via the "Update 2" CD on my IIci via the SLOW
Farallon AirDock infrared connector. That did it for the AirDock. I called
MacWarehouse and ordered a Dayna PC card (10baseT and 10base2 so I could use
it at home and at the office) for the PB. Works nice and fast, and it doesn't
force me to use "classic Appletalk" like the AirDock which still doesn't know
about Open Transport but is more expensive and needs a cable hookup instead
of just pointing the PB's butt at the Airdock. But I digress.

I had done the IIci and the 5300cs in my usual manner: boot with extensions
off and install. The 7.5.5 readme is rather explicit stating to use EM to
turn off all but 7.5.3 before rebooting and installing. I maybe should have
paid attention to that. After restoring a virgin 7.5.3 on the PB, the 7.5.5
upgrade worked just fine. No, "r2" was not a necessary precursor.

Yes, I was a good person and ran each HD against Dist First Aid 7.2.2 before
attempting the upgrade.

Today at the store I had time to upgrade three of our machines (Q650/PPC,
two 7200's). I followed Apple's instructions to the hilt. No problem, mon.

All told, I haven't seen any problems with the 7.5.5 upgrade when I followed
Apple's instructions to the letter.

Subject: [A] moz3_0.zip?

One of the new features in Netscape 3.0 is the ability to download and
store Java code in a compressed format, namely .zip files. Nav 3.0 can
uncompress the files and run the java in realtime so the actual
uncompressed version never is permanently stored on the hard drive, saving
space. What are the advantages? Well, because its ziped download times and
storage space can be greatly reduced and it also allows for cross platform.
Zip is the most popular compression algorithms for computers and they can
be opened on just about any platform. I don't know if that "moz3_0.zip"
file is important but I'd keep it just incase.

I am having an annoying problem on my Power Mac with the
hard drive spinning down. After the machine is idle for
1/2 hour or so the monitor goes black and the machine goes
into a state that I would liken to a powerbook going to
sleep. I suspected that the energy saver extensions were
causing this but they are off. I zapped the PRAM but that
did not cause a difference. I have rebooted with extensions
off but it still spins down. It does not spin down every
time the machine is idle but more often that not. Apple
came and replaced the hard drive and logic board (for other
reasons) but this problem persists. It is not very serious
but I would like to understand why it is happening. Can
anyone offer a suggestion?

I am running 7.5.3.

This version fixes a bug in parsing e-mail addresses of the newer digests
and adds a few extra features.

Digester 2.3 is free of charge, web-browser not included and the output
documents are best viewed using the Netscape navigator. Digester should run
on any system.

As I can't seem to get the new version uploaded to the archives you'll have

The Modern Memory Manager (in the Memory CDEV) is responsible for 32bit
Ram addressing (I suppose that's what you meant?) Turn it off and you
have 16bit again. Nice little feature: If you turn it off your Mac won't
be able to access more than 16Mb of Ram (or something like that, I don't
want to check out how much exactely because that would mean a restart) So
if you have more installed you can't use it.

think the Mac was *every* 16 bit. That is Windows your are thinking of. The
Mac was 24 bit (like my SE/30). I'm also pretty sure that the modern memory
manager won't change the status -- it is just a different/better implementation
of the Mac's memory manager. My first guess is that you would be out of
luck trying to run that program. Of course, one of the great things about
info-mac is that I'll be corrected by next issue if I'm wrong! -Gordon]

Hi Peter Peldan,
it is true, you cant read CW4 files with CW3 due to the fileformat.
Get you the updater CW4.0v4Update.hqx from CW4 to CW4.04 from
ftp.claris.com/pub/International/...
This updater includes a CW4 to CW2/3 translater application (which is
free!).
Hopefully you can install the translator serarately (without updatind
CW4).
Hope that helps,

I think that it is unfortunate that the two individuals above chose to
present their case in the tone and manner that they did. Info-mac is an
extremely valuable forum for discussing Macintosh news and problems,
getting advice and just gathering information in general. If they had a
problem with a particular piece of software (regardless as to whether or
not they had a basis for a complaint) it would have been far more
constructive if they had presented their case calmly and rationally, which
would have given the author a fair chance to respond to their complaints in
a public forum.

Because a program crashes or has bugs certainly doesn't mean that it's
useless - there is scarcely any software available today that will run on
all systems and all configurations without some problems. If the user can
work with the developer to track down the bugs it will result in a better,
more stable product. One of the great advantages of shareware is that you
can access the author and work to get bugs corrected quickly. Most large
commercial can't respond very quickly to individual complaints, but it's
not unusual for shareware authors to issue bug fixes within a couple of
days of tracking down a particular problem.

Further, there is a difference in size here that should dictate the scale
of your response. If you write some very strongly worded comments about
the software produced by an EXTREMELY LARGE software company (no names
please!) it's very unlikely to cause that company any damage, in fact it
may take a strongly worded message to get a significant response from a
large company. On the other hand, the same strongly worded comments
addressed to a shareware developer are likely to be very damaging to the
sales and reputation of that developer (who is usually an individual, and
not a large corporation) when they are seen by the public without a
balancing opinion. Since many of these people (like me) depend in part or
in full on income derived from shareware to support themselves and their
families it's easy to see how an ill-considered posting can cause serious
damage to several people's lives.

As to criticism's of the author's spelling mistakes, why is that even
included in the complaint at all? Firstly, I certainly don't see how that
is relevant in any way to the functioning of a piece of software. Secondly,
who really cares whether the author misspelled something or not if the
meaning is conveyed correctly (plenty of people misspell things, that's why
there's a market for spell-checkers, right?).

Subject: Netscape 2.x and 3.x problems

I have recently been having problems using ANY version of Netscape. I am
experiencing frequent (several each day) complete system freezes. I have
a Performa 6300CD, 16 MB RAM, Ram and Speed Doublers (latest versions)
installed, as well as FreePPP 2.5v2 and OT 1.1.1b7c4. I thought it might
be related to this stew that I have going, but after removing OT and
returning to MacPPP 2.5 the SAME problems exist. I think, after a LOT of
extension testing, that it is not related to any third party products I
have. It's possible, however, that things started going wacko after I
upgraded my Speech Recognition to 1.5.1 (which actually WORKS on the
6300!!)... is anyone having similar problems?

Subject: Sys 7.5.5, Desktop Speedboost

There appears to be a problem with Aladdin Desktop Speedboost 1.0.2 after
upgrading to System 7.5.5 (Quadra 800, 24MB RAM). Copying files from disk
to disk produced an "insufficient memory" finder alert on my machine,
regardless of the Finder memory setting in Finder Heap Fix (I raised it to
1MB). Disabling ADS 1.0.2 allowed normal copying.

Subject: USRobotics Sportster + FreePPP 2.5v2

I am using a USRobotics 28.8 Sportster and FreePPP 2.5v2, and I have
noticed something strange.

When I dial my school for the first time after the modem is turned on it
does not "see" the modem and I have to cancel. The second, and n times I
login it works perfectly.

I thought that maybe there was a Modem Init I needed - so I checked the web
page and found two really long ones. They didn't change anything.

The wierd thing is - that when I connect via ZTerm it sees the modem fine.

What are other people using as init strings for the Sportster?
Any other ideas? Thanks.

Subject: Where to get Meta and Beowolf fonts, cheap?

Where could I obtain the fonts Meta by Erik Spiekermann and Beowolf by Just Van
Rossum for a good price?
What is a good price anyway (for a single home Mac without network, with a non
PostScript printer, i.e for a single copy license)?
Are there attractively priced font collections or bundles that include these
fonts?

Thanks in advance for the information!
