Subject: [*] BatteryAmnesia 1.4.0b - PowerBooks
BatteryAmnesia is a utility for any PowerBook that uses a nickel-cadmium
(NiCad) or nickel-hydride (NiMH) battery. Over time, these batteries are
susceptible to a "memory effect", which can reduce their battery
capacity. The memory effect can be cured by fully discharging the
battery before recharging it.
BatteryAmnesia provides a safe, fast and automatic way to deep discharge
your PowerBook's battery. BatteryAmnesia bypasses the low battery
warning dialogs, and prevents the "soft" sleep brought on by those
dialogs. Instead, BatteryAmnesia will run your PowerBook's battery down
until the "hard" hardware shutdown occurs, which is at a lower voltage.
This provides the best discharge possible without an expensive external
battery conditioner.
Version 1.4.0a contains my new mailing address, and is functionally the
same as version 1.4.0.
My shareware utilities can now be registered through the Kagi shareware
system. Version 1.4.0b contains the Kagi registration utility.
Shareware; $10 registration fee suggested. See enclosed docs for more
information.

Subject: [*] CommuniGate Server 2.3.2
The CommuniGate Server is the kernel part of the CommuniGate integrated
messaging system. When installed, it runs in background (no dedicated
machine required) and:
* stores all messages sent and received;
* enables network access for CommuniGate users, maintains their mailboxes,
queues, etc.;
* loads and runs CommuniGate modules (i.e. FaxGate, UUCPGate, SMTPGate, etc.)
and creates the run-time environment for those modules;
* maintains system activity log;
* implements routing algorithms;
* maintains a resource database and provides access to that database for
CommuniGate users and CommuniGate modules (fax cover pages, sounds, voice
scripts, info tables, etc.).
The CommuniGate services can be accessed with the CommuniGator client
software. The client software allows you to compose and read messages, to
manage your mailboxes, etc. It is also used by CommuniGate administrator to
configure, maintain, monitor and control the CommuniGate server - locally or
remotely.
When the POPGate and SMTPGate modules are installed, the CommuniGate Server
can be used as a messaging server for clients running not only the
CommuniGator application, but plain POP-based mailers (as Eudora and Claris
Emailer) - on any platform.
The latest version of the CommuniGate System components can be obtained from:
or
Installation
Read the Installation chapter of the CommuniGate System Guide for the
instructions. Read other chapters to configure your system. When the system
is up and running, you can install communication modules to support faxing
(FaxGate), printing (PrintGate), paging (PagerGate), Internet e-mail
(UUCPGate, SMTPGate and/or POPGate), and other modules. See the manuals that
come with each module for instructions.
Note: If you plan to use MacPPP/FreePPP link modules, place the TCP Agent
file into the Modules folder inside the CommuniGate Server folder.

Subject: [*] CommuniGate SMTPGate 1.5
The SMTPGate is a CommuniGate communication module supporting e-mail
message transfer using the SMTP Internet protocol (RFC821) via TCP/IP
network.
The SMTPGate module supports multi-stream communications, and it can send
messages to and receive messages from several other hosts simultaneously.
The SMTPGate module can work together with POPGate module providing
complete TCP/IP Internet e-mail services.
The SMTPGate module can work together with UUCPGate module providing both
TCP/IP and UUCP Internet e-mail. The CommuniGate Router takes care of
directing messages to the proper gate.
The latest version of the SMTPGate can be obtained from:
http://www.stalker.com
or
ftp://ftp.stalker.com
Changes since last uploaded:
1.5.
* The stream processing has been changed to deal with a set of MacTCP bugs.
* The speed is improved under OpenTransport, and it should be at least as
fast under old MacTCP as the version 1.3 was (1.4 was extremely slow under
old MacTCP in most of cases).
1.4.
* The wake-up options are implemented to allow receiving mail via SMTP using
dial-up links.
* High-priority messages force the Server to establish TCP/IP Links
immediately, ignoring the TCP/IP activity schedule.

Subject: [*] CommuniGate UUCPGate 1.9.3
The UUCPGate is a CommuniGate communication module supporting e-mail message
transfer using the uucp protocol and regular modem connections; uucp
communications do not require a direct Internet connection (i.e. they do
not use the TCP/IP protocol).
The UUCPGate module supports multi-line communications and it can support
connections with several other uucp systems (so your CommuniGate system
can be a network provider for other uucp e-mail systems).
The UUCPGate module can work together with the SMTPGate module providing both
TCP/IP and UUCP Internet e-mail. The CommuniGate Router takes care of
directing messages to the proper gate.
The latest version can be found at:

CPUSpeedDisplay is a teeny application for notebook Macintoshes

what it says: it displays the current CPU speed in Megahertz. I wrote
this utility to aid me in developing MyBattery, which is a shareware

Subject: [*] FileMaker Big Dialog Patch
for 1024 x 768 or larger screens
=A91996 by Ben Goldstein
[email protected]
see http://www.swconsulting.cr own risk.
(I take no responsibilities for crashes or data loss!)
What is this?
This patch will modify your version of Claris'
excellent FileMaker Pro 3.0v3 product (see
http://www.claris.com) on a Mac to have
bigger dialogs boxes if you have a large monitor.*
The dialogs that will expand are:
* Define Fields
* Calculation
* Script Menu
* Edit Script
* Import
Why do I want bigger dialog boxes?
- Because FileMaker dialogs are too small.
- Because it will be easier to write longer
and more complicated calculations and scripts
without having to scroll up and down.
- Because it will be easier to Import files.
- Because it will impress your friends and
colleagues.
What does this patch do?
This patch will change your version of
=46ileMaker with a modified one that has larger
dialog boxes for large monitors.
What happens if I run the modified version of
=46ileMaker on a screen smaller than 1024 x 768?
It will shrink the dialogs back to the original size!
* Requirements: Macintosh, FileMaker Pro 3.0v3,
1024 x 768 screen or larger (a 17" monitor set
at the largest size or better yet, a 20-21" screen)
=46ileMaker is =A91994-1995 Claris Corporation

Subject: [*] Focus Comatose v4.2.4-Drive & monitor power managment utility
Comatose will help you prolong the life of your computer and save on
electricity while doing so!! It allows you to put your computer to sleep
rather than shut down the entire system. It works with all Macintoshes
Plus and later running system 7 or later and only 165K of memory.
Comatose spins down all hard drives on all SCSI buses and dim the screen
to black. The screen blacking allows some monitors to also power down,
adding to electricity savings. Your computer will run quieter when
comatosed and takes a fraction of time to start up when compared to
switching off or shut down. Comatose also has screen saver capability.
You can specify how many minutes before the screen dims and how many idle
minutes before drives spin down. Your computer will be able to wake up
with an incoming phone call, receive a fax and go back to sleep. Perfect
for using that old Mac sitting in the closet as a stand alone fax!.
Key features:
- Auto Spin down/Screen Off
- Screen Saver & Energy Star Support
- Password protection
- Digital Clock sreen saver (bouncing!)
- Full async. sound playback of sound files of any size!!
- Sound recording capability (using your built-in Mac microphone)
Minimum system configuration of:
* Hardware: Any Macintosh or Power Macintosh (Plus and later).
* System: 7 and higher.
* 165K of free memory.
Focus comatose is $25 shareware. If you decide to continue using it
after
the three day trial period, please pay the registration fee.
Note: This update fixes some minor bugs and adds screen saver plug-in
capability. Users of any older version should upgrade to this version.
This software is shareware and can be distributed as such on with
shareware collections and CD's provided it is not changed in any way.

Subject: [*] Insomniac 1.1.0a - PowerBooks & PCI Power Macs
Note: This utility works only on those Macintosh models that can wake
themselves up (PowerBook 100 & 150, PowerBook 500 and 5300 series,
PowerBook Duos, and PCI-based Power Macintoshes).
Some PowerBooks have the ability to wake themselves up. This is very
convenient, for automatically sending faxes or email in the middle of the
night.
However, the "PowerBook" or "Energy Saver" Control Panel provided by
Apple only allows you to enter a single wakeup time. This prevents you
>From scheduling multiple wake-up sessions. For example, if you wanted to
send your faxes at 1:00am, and then download some files at 2:00am, you'd
have to stay up until 1:00am, and reset the wakeup timer manually.
Insomniac allows you to program up to fifty wakeup "events" (registered
copies only). Therefore, you can have your PowerBook wake up several
times during the night, or even program it to wake up once a night for
weeks on end.
Changes in version 1.1.0:
- Converted to CodeWarrior and created PowerPC version.
- Added doubleclicking on entries to modify them.
- Fixed small memory leak that could cause crashes after extended
use.
- Prevented unselecting entries by clicking beyond end of list.
- Repositions windows if they were positioned on a larger monitor.
My shareware utilities can now be registered through the Kagi shareware
system. Version 1.1.0a contains the Kagi registration utility.
Shareware; $10 registration fee suggested. Unregistered copies allow you
to enter up to two wake-up events.

Subject: [*] MyBattery 3.2.0a - PowerBooks
MyBattery is the essential battery monitoring tool for Macintosh notebook
owners! David Pogue of MacWorld loved its "super-cool fuel gauge."
MyBattery features include:
* Customizable display window.
* Accurately estimates how much battery life remaining - and it "learns"
to adjust the estimate to be more accurate for your particular PowerBook.
* Multiple battery support.
* User-configurable menu bar displays.
* Color & grayscale support.
* Status indicators for AppleTalk, CPU speed, internal modem, and
charger.
* Battery charger status (hi-charge, lo-charge, running off internal
battery).
* Compatible with any portable Macintosh that supports the Power Manager
(Macintosh Portable, all PowerBooks, Duo's, etc.).
* Compatible with System 6.0.8 or later (System 7.x friendly).
* Stand-alone application, for minimum conflicts and maximum RAM
flexibility.
Version 3.2.0 contains the following enhancements:
* Converted to CodeWarrior and created PowerPC version.
* Fixed autoswitching bug when using four batteries.
* Updated 'About...' dialog to show model ID.
* Repositions windows if they were positioned on a larger monitor.
* Corrected temperature calculation for PB 500's w/PPC upgrade.
My shareware utilities can now be registered through the Kagi shareware
system. Version 3.2.0a contains the Kagi registration utility.
To fully activate the historical estimation feature and some display
options, you must register your copy of MyBattery. Suggested fee is $10;

Subject: [*] PowerBook Tweak 1.1.0a - PowerBooks & PCI Power Macs
PowerBook Tweak is a utility for Macintoshes that gives you more control
over the power conservation settings than Apple's standard control
panels. It lets you configure the conservation settings for specific
applications, allowing you to tailor power conservation to best meet your
usage needs.
It is compatible with PowerBook 500 and 5300 series, as well as PCI-based
Power Macintoshes and Performas.
You can configure the screen dimming, drive spindown, system sleep, and
CPU cycling for up to fifty applications (unregistered copies allow
four). For example, you can prevent your PowerBook from cycling while
you are playing a particular game. Or use PowerBook Tweak so that your
hard drive never spins down while using Word.
Version 1.1.0 marks the debut of the PowerPC-native version, as well as
repositioning windows properly when moving from a large monitor to a
smaller one.
Shareware; $10 registration fee suggested. See included documentation
for more information.
My shareware utilities can now be registered through the Kagi shareware

Subject: [*] ScapeGoat 1.0
ScapeGoat is an application that allows you to easily/automatically
delete the MagicCookie and/or Global History files created by NetScape in
the Preferences Folder on your startup disk. The MagicCookie file on a
Macintosh (in the NetScape Folder inside the Preferences Folder inside
the System Folder) contains information ("cookies") that a web site wants
to write to your hard drive. Cookies are a general mechanism which server
side connections (such as CGI scripts) can use to both store and retrieve
information on the client side of the connection. The Global History file
(created/maintained by NetScape Navigator) keeps track of URLs you've
surfed, web pages/files you've downloaded, every image you've seen,
IDs/passwords you've sent, searches you've done, etc. (Ever wonder how
NetScape knows what links to display as red vs. blue? This is how it
knows). The ReadMe file contains information on cookies and why you may
or may not want them on your system.
System requirements:
* Any Macintosh running NetScape Navigator
* System 7.0 or later
For more information, please read the Read Me file enclosed.

Ideas For Use
- Webmasters can use ScreenView CGI to monitor their server activity from
afar.
- Those of you with personal servers can use ScreenView CGI to show
others how your server is set up.
- ScreenView CGI can be used to troubleshoot server problems from a

Star Gate is a utility that allows easy transfer of files between PC and
Mac, or PC and PC, via a serial link. If you need to transfer files between
computers and don't want to bear the expense of network cards, transceivers
and commercial network software then you need Star Gate.
Star Gate is easy to configure and requires only a cheap null-modem cable.
It can transfer whole directory trees and reconstruct the tree on the
receiving computer. It also performs text translation so the line endings
of text files are always correct for the receiving computer. The interface
is simple and convenient. To send a file to another computer simply drag it
to the outgoing directory and it will automatically appear in the incoming
folder of the other computer. Forget about protocols, packets, CRCs etc.
just drag your files!

Subject: [*] Threshold 1.0.5b - PB 100 thru 180c
Do you use an external battery with your PowerBook? Or are you tired of
those low battery warnings popping up when you still have minutes or
hours of battery life left?
If so, Threshold is the utility for you! With Threshold, you can adjust
the voltages at which the warnings occur. This allows you to alter the
warnings so that they come up later than usual, giving you more
productive battery time. It is essential if you have an external battery
(PowerPlate, ThinPack or similar), but it's still really handy for
internal batteries.
Threshold sports a concise graphical display. It shows an analog graph
representing current battery voltage, with the current warning points
illustrated. There is also a battery status indicator, an elapsed timer,
and a sleep button. You can also easily adjust the warning thresholds
via up & down arrows.
In addition to the default Apple warnings, you can program up to three
custom warning sets, and Threshold can automatically switch between sets
for internal and external batteries.
Version 1.0.5 prevents use on unsupported PowerBook 150.
My shareware utilities can now be registered through the Kagi shareware
system. Version 1.0.5a contains the Kagi registration utility.

AppleScript, reference-based threading, and multiple character set
support. Yet Another NewsWatcher is free, but it is now possible to
register the program to support further development. Information on how
to register YA-NW accompanies the program
Version 2.2.0 (final) replaces all previous versions. This is a feature
refinement and bugfix release. The following changes or fixes have been
made since the last release version (2.2.0b13):
=C4 Changed how sorting by author worked to better correspond to how
author names are displayed in subject windows. Also changed sorting
by subject to be insensitive to be case and diacritical insensitive.
=C4 Changed how message threads in subject windows were created and sorted
to be more memory efficient when lots of headers were being fetched.
=C4 Made sure that help windows can not be opened when a modal dialog
is being displayed.
=C4 Fixed the problem of the horizontal scrollbar in subject windows not
responding to mouse actions.
=C4 Fixed the problem of the "Copy" command in the Filter Groups dialog
failing with an error alert once a second group of filters was
selected and the Copy button was pressed.
=C4 Fixed a problem with unencoded attached files not being read or
wrapped or formatted correctly.
=C4 Fixed some problems with the file attachment options dialog, such as
forgetting the attached file if the dialog was reopened and then
closed via OK.
=C4 When in the background, the program would flash its icon in the
application menu when it closed the connection to the news server
after being left idle. This notification is now suppressed.
=C4 Made the "Insert Recipient" command a bit smarter so it will now also
insert a leading comma when appropriate when inserting into an email
address header (To:, Cc:, Bcc:).
=C4 Modified the status display during file saving and binary extraction
to update the line count and transfer rate no more often than once per
second.
=C4 Fixed a problem of being able to select "Show Full Group List" before
the window existed (when first fetching a full group list with a new
news server).
=C4 Fixed the problem that sometimes the wrong default newsgroup was used
in the new filter dialog.
=C4 Solved a problem with the article disk cache (containing information
on incomplete multi-part posts) not being read correctly at startup.

Subject: (Q) Can't change HD icon
Greetings to all.
I think I'm missing something incredibly obvious here, and I'd be grateful
any ideas: We're running a Performa 6200CD (I know, I know) and are unable
to replace the HD icon with a custom icon. The new icon falls into place
OK via the GetInfo copy-and-paste method but immediately begins to
blink--very unnerving.
We tried the icon supplied with the Aaron 1.5.1 extension as well as a
couple of others, both with and without Aaron running--same results. We're
running with 16MB RAM; the problem seems unrelated to any combination of
our other plain-vanilla extensions. FWIW, DiskTools and Dr. Norton report
the HD to be OK.
Obviously, we can live without custom icons; I'd just like to know why we
can't change this one. Anything short of a ResEdit hack or Norton
DiskEditor surgery that will allow us to do this? Any insight into this
admittedly minor problem would be appreciated; this is also a good
opportunity to express thanks to all for the freely-shared wisdom from
which I have benefitted greatly over the past few months.

Is there a way to set Navigator 3.0 to send mailto and ftp links to other

Yeah. You'll need to install a router on your machine that will connect
your small network to the internet. Then, you'll be able to open
independent Telnet sessions on each computer.
The only software I am familiar with that will allow this is Vicom Internet
Gateway. Here's a review:
http://www.macweek.com/mw_1034/rev_gateway35.html
end here's the company's website:
http://www.vicomtech.com
There's a demo available there.
There may be other products that do this; I've only heard of this one.
Big caveats, however. When you use something like this, your single 14.4
connection will be split in half when you're both connected. Probably,
there's some overhead involved, so you may not even get 14.4/2 performance.
Second, this thing costs $149 for a two-simultaneous-user license. From a
bang-for-buck perspective, you'd be better off buying another modem.
