Subject: [*] AMICO 2.0 - Japanese Version
This is the Japanese version of the AMICO extension package.
AMICO is a utility for the apple menu. It simply lets you change
the order of the items that appear in the apple menu, in a very
easy way. In addition, you can insert divider lines to group
related items together.
Requirements
AMICO is expected to run on any Macintosh model with system 7
or later.Personally, I have tested it successfully on a Macintosh LC,
LC III, LC 475, Macintosh IIci, Power Macintosh 6100, and
Power Macintosh 5200.

Subject: [*] PPP-plan-toggle-as v0.2
This AppleScript is for PPP users with non-static IP addresses, i.e.
dial-up modem users, who would like a means of publicizing their
current IP address while logged-on so they can be contacted with
Maven, PGPFone, Talk, or whatever, with minimal hassle.
This AppleScript toggles the connection status of your PPP link. When
it opens a connection it ftp's a ".plan" text file of your choice to
your defualt directory substituting your current IP address and the
current time for certain special characters it finds in the text file.
When it closes a connection it first ftp's another ".plan" text file,
again substituting IP address and current time for certain special
characters. This way people can "finger" your account to get you
current log-on status. See below for more on configuration ans sample
"plan's."
What it requires:
This script as yet has only been tested on my 68K mac with System
7.5.3 and FreePPP 2.5. It does not seem to work properly with
OpenTransport. Use Traditional Networking. In addition to AppleScript
v1.0 or later the following Scripting Additions are required:
Late Night Software's MacPPP Control OSAX
GTQ Programming Suite OSAX
Mango Tree Software's TCP/IP Scripting Additions OSAX
All of which are available separately on the various UMich archives.

Yes, Apple acknowledges in the 6/5/96 Info Alley that this is a bug in OT
1.1: you can connect to the server, and you can see all other servers and
resources such as printers, but when you try to mount them (or print to
them), you're informed they cannot be found on the network.
Solutions: Run Network Software Selector on the server and reset to
Classic Appletalk; better yet, revert the server to a clean install of
System 7.5 followed by a clean install of 7.5.1 followed by a clean install
of ARA.
OT 1.1.1 due in July and ARA 2.5 (?) due this month are reputed to fix the
problem; however, there are also some ARA/AppleTalk problems which the new
release of OT may or may not fix. Apple IS working on a fix to the
AppleTalk problems, don't know a release date.
Hope this helps. Cheers!

This is a "feature," not a bug!
Config PPP or Free PPP, either always use only Hard Close (never Soft
Close), or de-select the checkbox to allow applications to open
connections.

Subject: Bad blocks
Hello Maccies,
I've just done a routine mainainance on my Performa 630. Norton Disk Doctor
says all is well. It seemed a good idea to run Speed Disk to optimise the
hard disk, as I had rebooted from CDROM. Check Disk went off o.k. but when
I tried to optimise I was told: "Some areas of this disk are defective.
When the disk was formatted, some portions were marked as defective.
Recommend: Save your files, then reformat using the formatting software
that came with your disk."
Now the disk was last reformatted 10 months ago and I have run Disk
Doctor/Speed Disk innumerable times since, with never such a dialog.
Question 1: Could Norton Utils be corrupted and have become a false
prophet? Is it worth reinstalling?(O.K., that's two questions).
Question 2: So I have to reformat my drive, ugh! These blocks are not
being used presumably. Can I carry on for a few days until I find time to
do a back up and reformat, without doing further damage? I was going to do
a complete clean reinstall soon anyway, to give 7.5.3 a go.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. If you want to save bandwidth by
emailing me direct, that's fine by me.
TIA

Keith, to check your fonts you want Font Box 1.8.2 from Insider Software, a
shareware version of which is on Info-Mac mirrors at \fonts\util.
It looks at both PS and TT, but from memory it doesn't do multi-byte fonts
properly - the manual is an Acrobat document, and I'm lazy, I've never
downloaded the reader:-)
What I'd do is grab Font Box, check for corrupted fonts, trash and
reinstall any Box indentifies as broken, and try things again. If things
are still bad, you could try removing the JLK Gothic and Mincho fonts,
seeing how things are then, and reinstalling JFK - which is only 12 or so
floppies, _so_ much easier than 7.5 Update 2 rev 2
But you know (taking a step backwards here), the problem doesn't sound like
a bad font to me, actually (bad fonts are usually much nastier). Are you
running a Font menu WYSISYG utility like Now's WYSISYG Menus? If so turn
it off and try things again - if the problem goes away reinstall the menu
utility. Have you tried replacing the offending application itself
(Nisus?) from a top copy?
And (standard disclaimers apply here;-) have you rebuilt your desktop files
recently?
all the best with this!

Subject: Help! Connection TOO good!
I figure this has got to be a twist - my dial-up connection is TOO
STABLE! See, I've only one phone line, and my net sessions don't fit any
rigid schedule. However, I need to receive phone calls regardless of my
net travels. When a call comes in, I WANT the connection to be broken and
the phone to ring. And it does - sometimes.
I'm using an LC III with 20Mb real RAM, a Supra FAXmodem (14.4), and
using Sys 7.5.3r1, OT 1.1, FreePPP 2.5rf, Netscape 3.0b4. Inits are
mostly GUI & File mgmt (Aaron, PopUpFolder, TitlePop, NetPrint, Snitch,
WunderBar, etc.) Works flawlessly, BTW.
How can I guarantee that when a call comes in, an error or somesuch
will occur which will drop my connection and allow the call in? What
happens now is that the caller hears a few rings then a pause and change
in ringing (like when a call is transferred), then I pick up. What I see
is a Transmission Error indication on the modem, then the phone begins to
ring and I pick up. However, a lot of the time, my connection handles the
error, re-establishes a great connection, and the caller simply hears
non-stop ringing as though I'm not in. I WANT the connection to break!
Any suggestions?
Sorry about the length of the post, but Hey!, I'm hoping for a weird

I have been online with a local provider for about six months now and have
had no serious problems, until now while attempting to get ircleUS (an irc

Mactcp prep file in ther preference folder or any where elese for that

Over the past months I have run Mosaic, Netscape, Eudora, Va Newsgroups,
Fido and Global Chat (another irc client) with very few problems.
The developer of ircleUS has suggested I trash all Mactcp files and
reinstall (this is when I discovered I am missing the prefernce file). I am
hesitant to trash these files and am concerned about the missing Mactcp
prep file before going any further. I continue to use all other aspects of
my browsers, helpers, etc with no problems.
I have a Quadra 610 running O/S 7.1, 8meg ram, 1.2 hard disk, using
conflict catcher and ram doubler, rebuild desk top regularly as well as

Do you know how I can get the Mactcp prep file and the consequences of not
having it. Any other suggestions that come to your mind from reading this
would be greatly appreciated.
By the way, I got this E-Mail address from the disk that was with my copy

The Performa 638 is an extension of the Quadra 630 line (same=

No, I don't think it puts an end to all the discussion.
1) If there is such a recommendation--and I haven't seen it,
perhaps it applies to the Italian version?--it is unlikely that it
would be for all Performas. The 68K and the PPC Performa models are
quite different and resembles more their non Performa counterparts
than each other.
2) I have successfully installed 7.5.3 on a Performa 460 and I've
heard and read that others have done so on other Performa models.
3) Might there be a slight misunderstanding? One part of 7.5.3,
Open Transport 1.1 cannot yet be installed on the 5xxx and 6xxx
desktop series. I beleive that all of those that are sold in Europe
are Performas while they have LC counterparts in America too.
By the way, I've also installed it successfully on a PM 7500 and on
both machines there are several improvements from the previous
system versions, 7.5.1 on the Pf 460 and 7.5.2 on the PM 7500.
