Subject: [*] Active Memory 2.01 US personal organizer/database
Active memory is a personal organizer used as an application with MacOs 7
and later. It allows you to track personal, or group oriented, informations
and to organize in time your projects or day to day actions.
Active Memory has all the functions needed to define:
- the type of activities,
- their expiration date,
- the eventual list of participants,
- The alerts or events to take place at a given time, ...
Active Memory can import or export all your data to and from other
applications. It gives you the possibility to define macros that are
launched at a precise time. Using standard System 7 functionalities you can
Publish&Subscribe data, get balloon-help, or launch AppleEvents at a set
time and/or date.
Active Memory can also be used for real-time communications on a network.
it will work as a "lite" version if not registered.

Subject: [*] A Day In New York City 3.3
A Day In New York version 3.3 is a HyperCard game which puts you into
New York City as a graduate student, and presents you with the
problems that follow (or, at least, a few of them). Based on the
writer's own experience, A Day In New York has been expanded to
include an extra day and a sojourn in Rhode Island. Most objects are
clickable and surprises are intended.
Requires HyperCard or HyperCard Player 2.0 or higher. Should run fine
on a Mac Plus or above.
$5 shareware. Registration allows the user to bypass an annoying page
but that's about it - full access is given to everyone.
Version 3.3 brings some code and text streamlining.
Thank you.

Subject: [*] Babylon Book V.9 Season 1
This Newton book contains the complete text from the online Babylon 5
Episode Guide which can be found on
http://www.hyperion.com/lurk/lurker.html. Originally, I created one book
which contained only the episode descriptions and a little background
information. I had to truncate the "jms speaks" sections due to space and
memory. The few letters I received about the guide asked me to either put
them back in or, at least, provide an alternate, larger version for those
with the memory and gas-powered Newtons.
I now have both, so I decided to recreate the guide from scratch. But, to
be fair, I'm splitting each season into a seperate book. Those of you with
20 meg flash-RAM cards can fill up a percentage with the entire episode
guides (currently three). Those of you with less can install the seasons
they want to read.
These guides are made without permission (or knowledge) from J. Michael
Straczynski. You should not have had to pay anything to get the books,
except for the minimal cost of obtaining them (such as download time, cost
of a CD-ROM, etc). Permission is granted to redistribute this in small or
large quantities. However, if you are going to mass distribute it (such as
on CD) then I just ask that you let me know and give me the option of
obtaining a copy at cost (or free). While the writing is not mine, I did
spend many hours compiling all the text, formatting, and indexing.
Future versions will possibly have more indexing and links. Perhaps it may
even mimic the Hyperion web site with graphics and such. Perhaps.
Comments are welcomed and encouraged. E-mail me: [email protected].
The more comments, the greater the chance that there will be a next version.
Seasons two and three will be uploaded shortly.

Subject: [*] CHN calculator
This is a Filemaker Pro 3 file for chemists. It will calculate the
theoretical Carbon, Hydrogen, and Nitrogen percentages from a molecular
formula. It will also calculate the CHN with a mole percentage range of
an impurity. Great for matching a CHN with an unknown amount of an
impurity. It has a standard list of common impurities, as well as the
abillity to enter the molecular formula of the impurity. There is also a
reaction calculator included, that will determine quantities of reagents
based on density, equivalents, molarities, etc. It was created by myself
and is shareware.

Subject: [*] DiskTracker 1.0.2->1.0.3 updater
This file updates DiskTracker updates DiskTracker 1.0.2 to 1.0.3. It
requires that you already have DiskTracker 1.0.2. You can also download
the entire 1.0.3 package elsewhere in this forum.
Changes in 1.0.3:
- Fixed bug that causes certain files not to be able to be opened (bug
produced error -39 or out of disk space error)
- files which behave this way in previous versions of DiskTracker open fine
in 1.0.3.
- Bug with mispositioning rotated, non-left-justified text when printing
labels has been fixed.
- Overall memory management improved - should increase stability.
- -49 error when saving over existing open file fixed.
- Option-clicking hierarchy triangles now expands all sub-hierarchies
(before you could only do this by option-shift-right-arrowing)
- You no longer can open more than one label template editor window or
label preview window from the same catalog (DiskTracker used to crash if
you tried to do this).
- Improved (slightly faster) sorting algorithm when opening files.
- Memory leak when cancelling open-file fixed.
- Crash when nothing is selected in Search Result Window and return is
pressed was fixed.
- Crashes when dealing with multiple Get Info windows in several different
catalogs have been fixed.
- Style changes on groups of selected items in Label Template Editor now
work properly.
- File saving behavior bugs fixed in Label Template Editor.
- When opening catalog files, window width is now more intelligently set.
- Redraw glitch with selection marquee and scroll bar fixed.

Subject: [*] DiskTracker 1.0.3
DiskTracker is an extremely powerful and flexible disk cataloging and
management system. It combines a huge feature set with a really easy to
use Mac-like interface. With DiskTracker, you can quickly and easily
create a catalog of every file on every one of your floppy disks, hard
drives, CD-ROMs, optical drives, servers, or whatever. Naturally,
DiskTracker can read into StuffIt and Compact Pro archives and
self-expanding applications.
After scanning your disks, you can then search the catalog at unbelievable
speeds with the powerful searching facility (including multi-parameter and
duplicate file searching). You can easily create professional looking disk
labels with the built in disk labeling facility and label template designer.
Features include:
-View the contents of scanned volumes in a familiar easy-to-use
System-7-style file list.
-Built in (fast!) virtual memory scheme ensures that you won't run out of
memory, even when scanning huge volumes and CD-ROMs with only 600K of
allocated RAM!
-Intelligent disk scanner can operate in the background and allows either
scans of online volumes and servers or floppy disks (insert disks one at a
time to scan them).
-Launch files directly from the program, or have the finder display them
for you.
-Fast, multi-parameter (use AND, OR, or XOR) searches. Search on almost 20
different criteria!
-Really powerful disk labeling system allows completely automated disk
label production.
-Draw your own label templates using the built in MacDraw(tm)-style
template editor, featuring powerful file-lists and rotatable text.
-Fat binary runs in native mode on PowerMacs or on 680x0 based machines.
-Plus much, much, much more!
DiskTracker requires System 7.0 or later and at least 600K of available
memory.

I would offer a less expensive solution that may work for the original

software that replaces the various versions of MacPPP and allows the user
to choose from multiple account and location configurations when making a
connection. switching between location-specific modem or dialing
configurations is useful, for example, when you need to dial zero for an
outside line from the office but not from home. I use FreePPP with Eudora-J

Give PortShare a try. It works very well for me for several Macs using the =

Subject: Microsoft Project and alternatives
In the near future I hope to get involved with a new project that will let
me justify upgrading from my Centris 650 to a new machine (hopefully a
PowerCenter 150!) However, the project leader wants me to take over some of
the project scheduling and she uses Microsoft Project on a Wintel box. I
see three options to avoid having to upgrade(!?!) to a Wintel box for
compatability: 1) Microsoft Project comes in a Mac flavor (I don't think
so), 2) use Softwindows, 3) use another project management software that
is either compatible with Project or I can convince her she doesn't need to
have the project on her machine also or the software comes in Windows also.
Do any of you have advice on these options? About 5 years ago I used Open
Plan which sat on top of Foxpro and was available for both Mac and Windows,
but it was pretty heavy duty for what I think will be needed. But I could
go with it if need be. Are there other packages out there? How well would
Project work with Softwindows?
Thanks for any help you can give.

In answer to this question which provided no return e-mail address, or I would

I think, but am not sure, that the Mac client is in early beta. It only works
against the PRODUCTION release of Exchange server. (which only runs on WinNT,
which is a crock of Micro$oft money making crap!, IMHO). I believe the beta
software is on the CD of the last release candidate for Exchange server. I
have installed the Mac client on a IIci, but can't evaluate it, since we are
running the last RC release of the server. As soon as we get the production
release, which I assume will come on CD, and will include the latest Mac
client beta, I should be able to give you some more feedback. The setup is
relatively straightforward, as long as you are using TCP/IP to connect with.
My IIci is running 7.5.3 with OT 1.1, by the way.

Subject: PC Exchange in reverse?
Fellow Mac-addicts,
This one is for anyone who exchanges files with Windows 95 users. Does
anyone know of a W95-friendly equivalent of PC Exchange? The solution I've
used until now has been MacInDos, which despite the ugly & clumsy
interface, accepted Mac disks & files without too much hassle.
Ideally I'm looking for some kind of extension, rather than application,

Subject: Power Macintosh GeoPort support
Ever since I upgraded to System 7.5.3, the support software for the GeoPort
on my Power Macintosh 7100/66AV has been ineffective. Looking for more
recent versions on the Apple.Support.Area has not been very helpful. There
used to be something which made things even worse. Now there does not
appear to be anything at all! Is Apple discontinuing GeoPort support?

Subject: Question on adapters for TV/VCR
Dear people,
I would like to request comments/advice on choosing a mac video signal to
TV/VCR.
It will be used for presentations and tutorial development.
Although I know that the TV signal will give me less resolution than that
of a monitor, I would like to request your opinions on the quality of the
output (by example: how much flickering there may be, how readable can
text be)
Please address your reply to this list or to

Subject: SCSI Director and 7.5.3?
Hello Info-Mac readers,
Brief background: I work as a Systems Engineer in a flexographic prepress
company. We have several AppleShare servers, Novell NetWare servers and a
few Unix boxes doing specific tasks. Clients are Mac and Wintel (Macs in
the art department and mostly Compaq's in the administrative areas). Prior
to coming here I worked as an independent support provider for five years,
and I had five years prior to that in technical support for a forward
thinking reseller/dealer.
Recently we upgraded the OS on our PowerMac 6100 AppleShare server to 7.5.3
by way of the System Software 7.5 Update 2.0. We are now experiencing I/O
errors in Retrospect, Apple Internet Mail Server and NetPresenz. The latter
two apps run fine once AppleShare File Server completes its startup, but if
we try to launch either while AShare is still starting up, we get the I/O
error and the app won't launch. Prior to the upgrade, we could launch the
Mail Server and the FTP Server after AShare was launched while it was still
starting up (Startup items). Since the server is normally up and running
round the clock, it has only been an issue when the server goes down. We
wait for AShare to finish its startup, then we launch AIMS and NetPresenz.
The dreaded I/O errors are showing up in Retrospect now as well. Dantz says
that we shouldn't run Retrospect on the same machine as a mail server, so
until we come up with another solution, we've been quitting out of AIMS to
run Retrospect. We didn't have any trouble with Retrospect before, but now
it crashes and burns even after quitting everything but AppleShare.
We have 2 external drives (5 volumes) which use the SCSI Director 3.1 driver.
Has anyone else experienced difficulty with drives formatted with SCSI
Director 3.1 and MacOS 7.5.3 (SCSI Manager 4.3.x)? I'd be happy to provide
more detail by direct e-mail to anyone who thinks that they might be able
to help.
TIA

Subject: Solution: Zip disks unreadable
Over the last few months, several people have said they've had problems
with their Zip drives deciding not to read a cartridge. The usual
symptom is that they get a "Disk is not readable by this Macintosh.
Initialize?" message when they insert the disk. The problem, at least
in my case, was that the pointer to the extents b-tree in the Master
Directory Block was bad. I'm not sure what that means, but Norton
Utilities does, and it also knows how to fix it. Here's what you do:
1) Start up with extensions off to disable the Iomega driver.
2) Insert the bad disk (it shouldn't show up on the desktop)
3) Start Norton Disk Doctor.
4) Under the Disks menu, there is an option called something like
"Search for missing disks." Choose it. This scans the SCSI bus for any
disks that aren't mounted. It should find your Zip disk, although it
will show a generic SCSI icon with a question mark in it.
5) Examine the disk. I recommend setting the preferences to do every
possible test, though for this problem the disk information test is the
most important.
NDD should find the problem and fix it. If you have it set to analyze
the files, it will ask you to load the driver, with a warning that if
it is corrupted it could crash your system. If the cause of your disks
problem was the same as mine (bad pointer), this should be safe as it
doesn't have anything to do with the driver.
I don't know if this problem is the cause of all the bad disks that
have been reported, but for those of you with bad disks, its worth a
try if you have NU. I hope it works for you.
If anyone from Symantec is reading this, thank you for saving my data
(not for the first time).

Subject: System 7.5.3 R2 (C)
I spent some time yesterday snooping comp.sys.mac.system on usenet and
came across a bunch of references to System 7.5.3 revision 2. Say what?
Hadn't seen anything in MacLeak or Tidbits, and they're usually pretty
good at heads ups. Today's Tidbits had an extensive article on it, so
Adam wasn't too far behind usenet.
I snagged a copy of R2 yesterday, before the news broke so it was quick
and dirty to get into ftptoo.support.apple.com and download the two disk
images. From the second of its three "system software" folders. They seem
to have a disk management problem. But I digress.
I read the docs, and Adam Engst seems to agree with them that R2 is for
specific Mac models only. I also agree with one usenet contributor who
said he posts all Apple updates to all machines 'cause Apple has a long
history of putting generally useful bug fixes in otherwise specifically
targeted updates. So I applied R2 to my office Q650/PPC and my home IIci
and my secy's 7100. None of those was targeted. Each used "something" on
both R2 disks. Didn't seem to hurt anything.
Today I applied R2 to the office 7200's and my 5300cs. Both are targets
for the update. Neither used Disk 2 of the R2 update. Hmmm.
One of our grad stoonts wandered in as I was installing R2 and asked what
earthly good it did. I am brutally honest with our grad stoonts. I said
I hadn't the foggiest flipping notion. She left the room with possibly
even less regard for her professors than she had previously.
Granted, R2 is brand spanking new. But have any of y'all seen anything
positive from it? We haven't. 'Cept some of our staff got needed training
in Extensions Manager (Turn off all but 7.5.3, install, then turn on all
your goodies afterwards). I suppose that's valuable in itself.

What drivers are you using? Maybe it's one that doesn't properly flush the
drive cache on newer drives at shutdown, causing data corruption (all
drivers I know of except Apple's suffered from this at some point).
Silverlining 5.6.3 and APS PowerTools 4.0.4 get it right.

Trash the Finder Preferences file, in the Preferences subfolder of the

According to Apple's Specifications, the Performa 5300 ships with and utilizes
72 pin, 70ns SIMMS.

Subject: Zip Drive on PowerBook 5300
Hi,
I've encountered a weird problem attaching Zip drives to a PowerBook
5300, whereby the drive appears at every SCSI address. When I insert the
disk I get 6 icons on the desktop. Whilst this may be a funky way of getting
600Mb out of a 100Mb disk, I'd rather it worked properly ! Anyone else seen
this ? The PowerBook is running System 7.5.3 (British) and the Iomega driver
is v4.3.
Cheers,
