Hi,
It would seem that digest 121 and 128 never went out! I'm sorry. 128 may
have to do with training Mike (I should have caught it). I have no idea why
121 didn't get out, however.
Cheers,
Gordon.

Subject: (A) AVI movies
For viewing AVI's, I've found that the MicroSloth InterNet Abhorrer works
quite robustly. I prefer not to use it for anything else at all, since it
uses system memory allocation as its temporary memory space, rather than
its own memory space. but it will view most AVIs you come across, so you
can find and save them with Netscape or what have you, and then use the
Open File command in MSIE to watch them.
Also, there are a few AVI->QT utilities on the archive, and a set of
Windows video codecs that have been ported to the Mac comes with one of
those file sets. These AVI-> QT applications work, but not invariably.
I've found MSIE to have a ~90% success rate, and the AVI->QT applications
to have a 40-50% success rate.

Hi everyone,
Does anybody have any experience to share with a modem that was bought in
America and then used in Europe? I was told I should have no problem with
my SupraFaxModem 288, but although I already have the phone jack adaptor
required for UK phone plugs, I'm still afraid the fax software/hardware,
the caller ID feature and misc. PPP configurations will go buzzerk.
BTW I already took care of the power related inconvenients, and bought a
step up/down transformer.
Thanks in advance for any insight.

I now have 40mb of RAM and am unsure on how to allocate the memory
control panel options.
I have a PMac 6100/84. Using Speed Doubler, but not RAM Doubler.
How much should I have in the cashe? I was told by Apple that I should
have at least 1mb of Virtual memory turned on for filemapping, etc.
What about RAM disks for Word or other programs to make them faster?
Thanks!

Hi,
I have a Powerbook 180 at home, which I use to access my Internet provider.
I use ConfigPPP to connect. The funny thing is that my Powerbook sometimes
decides that it is high time it got on the net. All by itself. With PPP
down and the Control Panel not even open, with all my communications
programs nowhere to be seen, something will launch ConfigPPP and attempt to
execute my login script. Somtimes the machine is only "on" and only the
Finder is active. I leave it for a few hours and when I come back it is
trying to connect. Anybody has an idea what's going on?

Stop right there. I'll bet you're using FreePPP 1.0.5, right? It
erroneously set TCP/IP to BootP, as it did on my 6100. Change the popup

Hi,
I am thinking of buying a lowcost scanner for some messing about at home. I
am torn between a Mikrotek E3 or a Umax Vista 6E SOHO. Pricewise they are
about equal (around 400US), both do 300x600 dpi optical. They come bundled
with some basic software.
Has anyone got any experience with these machine, something good or bad to
say about either of them ?
Thanks

[I just purchased an E3 scanner. I am very happy with it, but don't like the
interface. The only way to access the scanner is through a Photoshop plug-in
that you can use without Photoshop if you wish. After every scan, the plug-
in must reload. Despite this, several colleagues and friends recommended the
Mikrotek line highly.--Mike]

If you visit Intel's Web site (www.intel.com), the sub-page that concerns
Indeo has a link for downloading a Mac extension that runs AVI movies.
Works fine. There are also QT-AVI convertors available, but why bother
when you can play the movie directly?

I fully agree with the sentiments expressed on this subject,
especially the above. As per the shareware tradition, the shareware
authors may be given the option of paying the * shareware upload fee
* (this fee may be the same fee collected for individual sharewares,
ie., if the shareware cost is 20$ then the upload fee may be the
same). This should not be conditional to upload but if implemented,
they are morally obligated to pay the fees to Infomac. On the other
hand, freeware authors should get free uploads. This, I think should
work out to every one's benefit -especially to Infomac organization -
and to the entire Mac community. - KrishnaMohan.
[Info-Mac has forever stood as an example of how the internet began:
individuals seeking to exchange knowledge and experience through a common
medium. While others continue to commercialize the net, Info-Mac remains
a not-for-profit effort.--Mike]
[Lets see -- lets guess 5000 files up there now. Lets say 25% of them are
shareware, so that is 1250 files. I think that is very high, btw. I suspect
it is closer to 10%. So, if the average is about 10 bucks, then that is
12,500, a nice chunk of change. Now, we don't get 1250 new shareware every
year, so that will degrade it. I count about 30 out of 271 files in the last
21 days (the rec directory). The average was a bit higher than 10 -- 15. So
that is about 150 a week. if the return rate on shareware fees is 10% (I
think that was the number Peter Lewis told me once), that is 45 15 bucks a
month.
I would like to keep it the way it is, but try to get back to the fast
turn around. Lets see how it goes and work from there.
Hey look -- two of us one one message! -Gordon]

You do not gain video performance (in terms of speed, etc.) by adding VRAM.
What you do gain is resolution (bigger size and/or bit-depth).

I'm not sure what is going on here, but my first question is are you using
System 7.1 or 7.1.P? The difference being that the "P" means Performa. If you
are using the Performa version, it does not have the same General Control
Panel as the non-Performa version. With the Performa version you can only
install Desktop patterns, not modify them (that would explain why "there are
not even any black or white boxes where colors would normally be"). I suspect
this is what happened: You had System 7.1P (Performa version). The General
Control Panel became corupted. You installed System 7.1 (non-Performa) and it
did not replace General Control Panel (that was corupted). Just a guess. If
this is it, just replace the General Control Panel. Hope this helps.

Yes, it can be used. As long as the speed is at or faster (lower number) than
the minimum it will be OK. PCs use SIMMs that have parity, which Macs don't
use and will simply ignore. Just make sure you don't have a PowerMac that
requires you install SIMMs in pairs (such as the 61xx series).
