Subject: [*] ASTROCAL 2.0.0
ASTROCAL Macintosh produces yearly astronomical calendars, for any
given year, and provides the following information in on a day-by-day basis:
* Day of Month
* Day of Year
* Days Remaining in Year
* Julian Date
* Lunar Aspect Graphic (for 0h U.T.)
* The lunar elongation angle (measured eastward from the sun)
* The position angle of the bright limb (measured eastward from
celestial North to the mid-point of the bright limb)
* The percentage of the lunar surface illuminated by sunlight
* Right Ascension and Declination of the Sun (for 0h U.T.)
Although you will probably only need to run ASTROCAL once a year,
it sure beats buying a new pre-printed calendar annually.

Subject: [*] AutoRef, v1.0.1
AutoRef is an application program for easier writing references
(journals in various format).
It isn't as functional as EndNote. It is not working well with MS
Word 5. The styled text you created with the AutoRef becomes plain
text after being pasted into a Word 5 document. But Word 6 (I am
using it) or SimpleText which can import the styled text from other
application work fine.
I prefer AutoRef not because I wrote the source code for it, but
because it's easy to use.
It helped me a lot when I was writing references in my thesis and I
want to share this program with other people who need this kind of
application.
You can also down load it from

I got tired of waiting, so I wrote one. So here ya go. This program can be
used to lookup IP addresses, CNAMEs, HINFOs, AXFRSs, etc. with detailed
output in the style of the UN*X program: nslookup
Most importantly, is freeware!
This version (0.92) fixes a *big* monster bug in 0.9 that crashed every
other machine except mine
version instead of the previous version 0.9.
Having System 7.0 or later, and either MacTCP or OpenTransport is a good
idea, too.

BBEdit Extension by Niel M. Bornstein
Copyright =A9 1996 PLR Software, Inc.
HTML Form Parser is a BBEdit extension to parse the output of HTML forms.
You would get the output mailed to you, for example, and the extension
will parse all the nasty little ASCII codes for non-alpha characters into
characters.
There are three modes of operation:
* If there is no window open, it will parse the contents of the clipbo=
ard
* If there is a window open with no selection, it will parse the entir=
e
contents of the frontmost window.
* If the frontmost window has a selection, it will parse the selection
In any case, it will put the results of the operation in a new, untitled
window.
I use it in combination with Eudora. If I get just one message, I copy it
>From Eudora and run the Parser on it. If there are several, I save them
to one text file, then open it in BBEdit and run the Parser on the file.

MacTypingTutor is an inexpensive Macintosh sharware program that teaches
typing skills, in English. This version has improved keyboard shortcuts. It
uses five integrated work areas that together teach correct finger
placement and "touch-typing" memory of the keys on the keyboard. Practice
materials include: single letters, letter & number sequences, words,
sentences, paragraphs, and free typing. The program offers a spelling
checker, user-defined speed goals, score sheets, time tracking with
rest-signals, and many other helpful features. It comes in a regular
version (enclosed), a junior version and a special version (Dvorak). It
also now comes in a French version. Other non-English versions (e.g.,
German, Italian, Spanish) under development. Users can devise their own
session-routines, by working in one or more of the modules for ten to
fifteen minutes each.

Subject: [*] McPoet 3.1
McPoet is a tool for text generation and text morphing: that is, a tool for
the poetic manipulation of text. It uses a simple language to allow the
text-generation rules to be completely user-configurable. It is easy to
write your own rules for McPoet even if you know nothing about programming
your Mac. You can also use the large set of built-in rules, or an automatic
rule-generating function which can turn ordinary text into an executable
rules.
The text morphing features include an automatic version of Tristan Tzara's
original formula for creating poetry from text, an eecummingsfication
feature for imitating the style of the great poet ee cummings, multiple
forms of Markov chaining (with several built-in probability tables) and
much more.
Version 3.x includes dozens of new features over version 2.x: more than
can be listed here.
Version 3.1 is a maintenance version, which fixes a number of bugs that
appeared in version 3.0.
McPoet requires at least 2.5 megabytes of free disk space, at least 2
megabytes of available RAM, and a reasonably-fast processor (or great
patience!). It is PowerPC compatible.

Subject: [*] Skittles 1.0.3: Action/Puzzle Game
Skittles is an action/puzzle game for one or two players! You control
genetically altered Skittles which fall from the sky, trying to keep them
>From stacking up to the top of the screen.
The Skittles engineers have recently been experimenting with new
flavors and colors. One of the more psychopathic scientists decided to
alter the Skittles' formulas through genetic mutation. The first test batch
was produced, and a teeming, jiggly mass of coagulated, living Skittles
appeared. They quickly began to multiply and pile up into large groups. As
the scientists fled screaming from the building, a few clever minds noticed
that the Skittles were highly reactive. When four of the same type of
Skittle touched, they would instantly vaporize.
There's only one hope left for the Skittles plant, its workers, and
the small city that they inhabit. Vaporize the Skittles before they run
rampant and destroy everything in their path! You are the only hope left
before they crush the entire city.
Version 1.0.3 of Skittles corrects several bugs and adds many
requested features. I strongly recommend that all users of previous
versions upgrade as soon as they can.

Subject: [*] The Bridge
The Bridge is a very powerful, very small, and very versitale program.
It will automatically convert a file with an extension (".sit",
".hqx", ".zip", etc) to the preset file type and creator ("SIT!/SITD",
"ttxt/TEXT", "PZIP/PZIP", etc). Also handles files without extensions.
Allows for preset filetype-creator combos, and adding/modifying settings
without any fuss (as opposed to FileLift and Hax). This is THE program
for a mac user to have.

Subject: Detailed Bronx NY address-finder map prog needed
I need a program that will allow me to look up the address of clients in
the Bronx, and have it show me on a detailed map not only where the
street runs but which section of it would contain that numerical ad-
dress; and it should have all (or at least most) of the surrounding
streets clearly labeled. (train and bus routes would be an added bonus).
I've seen CD-ROMS that cover the whole United States but are weak on the
local area details or will only highlight the street you specify (but
not distinguish between the 4000 block and the 1200 block); I've seen
web sites (there is one listed in the June MacUser) that will find a
location much as I've specified in my description here, but only know
the major roads and avenues by name, and the lo-resolution web grafix
maps don't make it clear what streets you're looking at.
The solution needs to be cross-platform; or, alternatively, it needs
to function on a black-and-white compact Mac (the only Mac in an other-
wise Windows environment being my hopped-up SE).
Before I spend money or blow any more time chasing cyberlinks, I
figured I'd ask around.

Yep, I've seen this several times with versions of the Apple Installer.
The incongruity here is due to the fact that DFA hasn't always repaired a
HD even when it says it has. Even when you've run it again several times
and found no faults. (Even when Norton has reported the drive sound
I'm afraid you'll have to do a "Very Clean Install"
In other words, format the drive, next install 7.5.x, and then do the
Update to 7.5.3. I'm beginning to conclude that this gives a better drive
under 7.5.3 than a clean install into a new System folder.
Well, of course, it gives a better drive under _any_ system, for that
matter. It's a bother though isn't it....

I just had to solve the same bizarre problem for a client, when I
upgraded her 7200 to 7.5.3/OT 1.1. She had not been able to get onto the
Net at all with 7.5.2/OT 1.08, so I thought the upgrade would be a good
place to start.
Look in the TCP/IP control panel: if, for some reason, the topmost popup
is configured as "AppleTalk (MacIP)," change it to "MacPPP." That worked
for us.

Subject: Foreign Language Translators
Back when PowerPC processors were new, I read about a software package
that would translate english to spanish and vice versa (and possibly 3 or
4 other languages as well, all on one CD). For the life of me I cannot
remember the name, nor have I ever run across it in a mail order
catalog-- I've only found the foreign language tutor programs. What I
need is the translator. Does anyone know what it's called, where I could
get it and what the street price is? Thanks!

HP has recently released a new backgrounder for its printer drivers which
is supposed to clean up the past problems, but it still didn't fix the

first installation, it single handedly froze the computer until I could

Subject: Radius PrecisionColor 8/1600 PCI videocard
Hi,
I have two serious problems with a brand-new Radius PrecisionColor 8/1600
v.2 PCI card in my PowerMac 7500 (to attach a second monitor) :
First, the card only accelerates QuickDraw in 16 bit, not in 8 or 24 bit.
In 8 or 24 bit the card is very slow (speed of a MacPlus...).
The second problem is realy strange. When installed for the first time, the
card worked fine but after some reboots only garbage showed up on the
monitor connected on the Radius card. To fix the problem for some time,
until the problem starts again, I have to re-install the card (removing en
re-inserting it in a PCI slot). The problem always start after a (cold)
reboot.
Has anyone some experience with this PCI PrecisionColor 8/1600 card ?
If you want you can mail me at [email protected].
Thanks for helping me out !

Subject: Too Much RAM for RAM Doubler?
Hi, gang.
I just upgraded my 6100 from 24 MB to 40 MB, mostly so I could get out
>From under RAM Doubler, which I suspected was involved in the very few
(once every 3 or 4 days of intensive use) bombs and freezes I still got
under 7.5.3. Popped out the 8 MB SIMMs, popped in the 16s, removed RAM
Doubler; everything was fine. Just for grins, I reinstalled RAM Doubler
and rebooted. First thing I did was pull down About This Macintosh.
KABOOM! Instant Type 11 bomb. This never happened before, and I swear the
extra RAM was the only change. I'm only running a single row of
erstwhile-very-polite INITs: no other "doublers," no Now stuff, no Aaron.
Out of curiosity, I installed MacsBug. It reported a problem with the
code in a different program each time I triggered the bomb: OtherMenu,
OtherMenu AE Helper, Malph, and the Finder (nothing else is running right
after startup), so I doubt that is useful information. This is not a Real
Big Deal, obviously, but it's certainly a puzzle.
Anyone seen this before? Does RAM Doubler choke on too much RAM?

Subject: Zip vs. EZ
Forgive me if this issue has already been discussed.
I'd like people's opinions on whether to get a Zip drive or a Syquest EZ
drive.
On the surface, the EZ drive looks more attractive: Way faster, and larger
disks for only $20 more. There are two concerns that prevent me from going out
and buying an EZ right now.
First is the life of the cartridge. The Zip disk has an estimated life span
of 10 years. What's the life span of an EZ cartridge?
Second is the Syquest name. I've heard about many bugs and glitches in the
Syquest software; enough to make me a bit nervous. Has anyone encountered
these?
Any advice is qppreciated, TIA
