Subject: 7.5.2 -> 7.5.3 Comments?
I am writing this in response to Randy Peterson, who asked about the
wisdom of using System Update 2.0, and because I want to go on record as
someone who has had a GOOD experience with the update.
> 1) Did you encounter any problems with the actual installation? Did the
> installer function properly without doing a clean install of 7.5.2 first?
> Has anyone done the install on a PowerWave?
I have installed the update on my Performa 638CD, after doing a clean
System 7.5 Install and made a "Universal" startup disk on my Zip drive,
also after a clean install. I've also installed it on two PowerMac
5200/75 LC and a PowerMac 7500/100 in a school computer lab that I
unofficially manage. I didn't do a clean install in the lab before
installing the update. I haven't had any problems with any of the
machines, and they all run noticeably faster and crash less. The only
weird thing that happened was that a week or so later the 7.5.1 Finder
Update reappeared in the System folder of one of the 5200s. I'm pretty
sure it was gone after installing the update, and I think one of the lab
users that thinks he knows more than he does put it there from another
machine (that I haven't updated yet) because he had been told we needed
it.
Sorry, no experience with a PowerWave.
> 2) What definite practical advantages of 7.5.3 over 7.5.2 have you
> noticed? Do you consider this update a major improvement?
The advantages of 7.5.3 over 7.5.2 aren't as big as the changes from 7.5
or 7.5.1, because several of the major "under the hood" changes were
first introduced in 7.5.2. However, I recommend installing it because of
the updates that are actually new, and because it is difficult keeping
track of all the updates/patches. Just think about having to reinstall
your system... The update did provide noticeable speed improvement and
increased stability, even on the 7500 (running 7.5.2 of course). I don't
consider this a major update like the shift from 7.1.2 (I think) to 7.5,
but I think it deserves to be 7.6 simply because of Open Transport
(which I'll discuss later.)
> 3) What applications, extensions, CPs, etc don't work under 7.5.3 that did
> work under 7.5.2? Have you found solutions?
I haven't had any conflicts since installing the update, on any of the
machines. However, we aren't running near as many extensions as you are.
So far it seems that if something is compatible with 7.5.2, it's
compatible with 7.5.3.
> 4) I'm annoyed that Open Transport is apparently "required" for PCI Macs
> (gee, MacTCP is running just fine on my machine at the moment). If you
> were using MacTCP under 7.5.2, what happened to it when you updated to
> 7.5.3? Can you switch networking with the NSS app, or not? Have you had
> reason to try to switch back to MacTCP, and could you do it easily?
One a PCI Mac you won't be able to switch with the NSS app, but I
believe you still can manually. However, OT 1.1 has been much more
stable than previous versions, and I am getting several hundred bps more
throughput on my 14.4 kbps modem since I installed it on my Performa. I
have also noticed better network performance on the 7500, even though
the lab only has a LocalTalk network. Indeed, my biggest complaint with
the update is that OT won't work on the 5200s (I believe its something
to do with the 603 processor, since it won't work on any machines with
it. Anybody know the real reason?)
5) What communication applications *still* don't work under Open
Transport
> 1.1? I've read one report that Eudora Lite doesn't work, but haven't seen
> that confirmed.
I don't know about apps that don't work with OT. I used Eudora Lite for
a short time after installing the public OT beta, but switched over to
the Netscape 2.0 email before the System Update was released. I didn't
have any problems with it over a PPP connection.
> 6) Just what advantages does Open Transport really offer? Someone claimed
> that he was getting an incredible throughput of >8 KBps downloading a
> binhexed file from the net via a 21600 modem connection (he didn't say if
> the file was compressed, though). This would be several times faster than
> the best I can get over a 288 modem with MacTCP! Is this kind of speed
> reproducible?
The file was probably highly compressible with the automatic compression
in the modem. However, while the speed gains aren't that miraculous, in
my experience they are noticeable and very welcome. If you're using a
network (other than LocalTalk) rather than a modem, the speed gains
should be greater, because OT has been optimized for this use.
Now a note about the reported memory leak:
While I don't claim to speak for everyone, I have always had memory
leaks (especially with Apple Guide, which the Update fixed), but they
have _decreased_ since installing the update. The only problem I've had
is that Netscape 2.0 and 2.0.1 doesn't seem to release memory properly
on quitting. As far as I've been able to tell, it fragments my available
memory such that the largest unused block is the same size as it was
when Netscape was running. This problem existed before I installed the
update, however, so they can't be related. Anybody know of a fix, or
what is causing this?
All in all, I have been very pleased with the update, and installing it
has been much easier than installing the 7.5.1 update. However, if you
can spare the time, I recommend doing a clean install first, simply
because a periodic cleaning can help keep your computer running well.

hi. we recently got several new powermac 7500s in our lab, and our lab program
is now no longer able to record from the microphone. i wrote the following
test program, which opens the recording device and continually outputs the
volume level. on my quadra 660av (7.5.1) at home, it works fine. on our
powermac 6100 (7.1.2) it also works. but on the 7500s runnning 7.5.2,
although there were no error codes (all 0), the input level stays firmly at
0. i have the input device set correctly to external microphone, and other
sound input programs work fine on the new machines. can anyone figure out why

I've got ClarisWorks 3.0; it came w/ my Performa. In the User's Guide is
a picture illustrating the use of the stylesheet (or whatever it's called
- the helper functions) to make business cards from the "Draw" program.
I can't seem to find the pictured "helper", and I'd like to make some

What alternatives (freeware, shareware, etc.) are there for this endeavor?

Subject: [Q] Zapping PRAM zapped my StartupScreen too!
In a recent fit of maintenance-fever I decided that it was high time
that I zapped my PRAM. I used TechTool, and created a backup first.
Thereafter, my StartupScreen was hosed, rendered in what looked to be
about 16 colours. When the startup was complete, normal colour was
resumed (millions). Subsequent reboots had the StartupScreen appearing
briefly, then disappearing to plain gray. A couple of times it even
RE-rebooted itself just as the StartupScreen appeared/disappeared.
I thought I had hit the reboot button again by accident! (But I hadn't).
I've restored the PRAM, and all is normal again, but what the heck
was that all about? Kind of puts me off maintenance...
(My Mac is a 7100/66 with 16MB RAM, 8 of which were added a few months ago
along with a VRAM upgrade to achieve 'millions' of colors)
Thanks in advance!

Subject: Cross Platform Disk-spanning Compression?
Yes, (to all those who, upon reading the subject header line, are al-
ready thinking ZipIt), I know Tommy Brown's shareware program ZipIt can
create and also decompress .zip files that span multiple floppy disks.
Which IS what I need a solution for...I've got an 8.x-MB database file
that I have to move from a PeeCee to a venerable but accelerated SE on
a monotonously regular basis, and there's no cross-platform network.
The problems with ZipIt are as follows:
my work-Mac, the beforementioned venerable SE, is running Applied
Engineering's 40MHz '030 accelerator with 16 MB RAM in tow--it's the
digital equivalent of what hotrodders used to call a "sleeper"--but the AE
gymnastics that resulted in 16MB RAM being available despite the SE's
ROMs make it a picky platform in some respects. It will not, for in-
stance, run the 1.3.5 version of ZipIt at all. I have an earlier version
of ZipIt (I think it is 1.1.x) but it is a version that did not support
disk spanning, whether on the sending or the receiving end.
My SE is equipped with a copy of Insignia Solutions' outmoded
"Entry-level SoftPC", so I can run PKUnZip under DOS on my SE.
Sounds like a solution, huh? But PKUnZip is one of those horrid
command-line protocol programs that expect you to enter some kind
of alphabet soup like "C:tempdirs~,+)&2@hiccup&%@%huh?2>" if you
want to decompress a file that comes in two parts (each on a floppy
disk) and put the expanded results somewhere useful.
I have not and will never like DOS, but I've used DOS programs that
are less horrible by far that this (BinHex.exe comes to mind), and I
find myself extremely frustrated by this C:s~,+)&2@hiccup&%@sH&&it!
Stuffit Expander, wonderful implement that it is (and all the more ap-
preciated by me given that nothing else that uses the Stuffit Engine
works under system 7 on my modified SE), does not cope with .zip files
that span multiple floppies.
Bill Goodman's Compact Pro and Aladdin's Stuffit both exist to a limited
extent as PeeCee executables (after using some of them, one comes to under-
stand just how "executable" they are), but if any flavors of them can make
disk-spanning archives that my Mac can use, they must be DOS command-line
flavors for which the above-given description of PKUnZip would apply just
as well.
I actually found myself considering MacLan connect, putting the PC on an
AppleTalk network consisting of itself and my SE, and buying a SCSI Ether-
net connection for the SE...all of which would be at my own expense...
or trying to con the boss into buying a parallel-port Floptical (ick, but
all the GOOD external media devices belong to my home Mac)...arrrgh!
They both got modems, the SE with a 14.4 and the Gateway PeeCee a 28.8;
they're approx 45 feet from each other; I don't have any version of
DataViz MacLink and the SE is less portable than it would otherwise be
thanx to a modem, a (short) SCSI chain, and a printer being plugged into
it, but I'm starting to wonder about MacLink. But I already HAVE PC-
Exchange, dammit, and the SE in question already has a SuperDrive, ...
...this SHOULD NOT REQUIRE A HARDWARE SOLUTION!!!
tell me how it's done.

Subject: DaynaFiles under 7.5.3
SE's and now DaynaFiles...yr probably figuring I'm wondering when I can
get a quad-604 board to work in my 512e + equip it with Color QuickDraw
and get CHRP ROMs to run WindozeNT native and emulate an Amiga + Toaster
on the results and output to BeBox realtime using 512-vintage keyboard?
Well, some of us cling to our vintage devices...
But seriously, my DaynaFile is OK with my crowded SCSI chain under 7.5.1
but it hates my Jaz drive being switched on (no probs with the driver,
only the hardward giving it fits) and if it has electricity the Jaz drive
prevents the DaynaFile extension from loading (gets an X thru it); if I
want 5.25" bad enough, I can turn off the Jaz first and boot, then turn
on the Jaz and use SCSIProbe to mount the Jaz drive...but I don't have to
go thru such complicated perambulations under 7.5.1, same box same SCSI.
Just hoping someone has some useful observations (other than I oughta be
grateful that it works at all).

Ok, here's a question that I'm hoping somebody may have an answer to.
We have a LaserWriter 16/600PS with fax option and basically I want to know why
the majority of faxes that we receive seem to print from the 250 sheet paper
tray but then
some seem to print from the multi-purpose tray! This is particularly annoying
since we keep
our company letterhead in the multi-purpose tray and when we receive a fax that
has been
sent to us, it is infuriating to not be able to read the text because it has
been printed on the logo section of our letterhead. There also seems to be no
logic to why it suddenly decides to switch
trays. (We've obviously made sure both have enough paper)
Now, I know some bright sparks may say "...take the letterhead out...'' but
surely this
can't be the only solution. Apple have been unable to come up with a solution
and our dealer -
who has been very helpful - has also failed to come up with an answer.

Subject: messages in foreign languages
A recent message from the moderator said that the reason no messages in
foreign languages were accepted was because the monoglot moderator wasn't
prepared to pass them on without having any idea what they meant.
There's an obvious fix for that: extend the moderator pool to include
people who can read more than one language.
I can read French and Turkish well enough to know if a message is on-topic
for the digest. Volunteers for other languages? There should be no problem
with Italian, given the level of activity of the Italian Mac community.
Software for non-English languages is announced every week. It's just plain
nuts to insist that it has to be described in English.
[This sounds good to me. I could maintain a short list of people who would
review other language posts, send the email whenever I got it. The reviewer's
would glance at the message and attach a small english summary/translation
and return it to me. This would force a 24 hour delay on those messages, but
they would make it. What do you all think? I would like to see the english
summaries added because a) many people who have the answers know only
english; so the poster is bound to get a bigger response and b) so I can keep
track of what discussions are going on in the digest. -Gordon]

Subject: Missing Finder Icons
I have been experiencing some problems with lost Finder icons under
System 7.5.1 and 7.5.3. I have 2 hard drives, one 2gb startup and one
1gb storage drive. The storage drive has StuffItExpander, DropStuff,
ShrinkWrap and MacBinary on it, and this is where my 'net downloads get
decoded/decompressed.
About every 10 restarts or so I lose the icons for those apps. This
happens with no apparent pattern, and totally despite the fact I rebuild
my desktop about every 3-4 days and run disk checks with Norton Utilities
3.1 just as often. When I rebuild the desktop on the drive with the
apps, it fixes for that session but then loses it on the next restart.
If I rebuild both drives it seems to be OK for a while.
Just for the record, I am running a PowerMac 9500/132 with 72mb RAM.
I've had it for about two weeks now and, totally to my happy amazement,
have only had ONE crash with it-- caused by Netscape 2.0 and the
Shockwave plug-in. So system crashes are not corrupting the drive's
directory or desktop file.
Can anyone help?
P.S. I'm also having trouble getting the Sound control panel to keep my
settings, despite my deleting the prefs file. Anyone have a clue? My
startup chime through my external speakers is loud enough to set off
seismographs in California.

archives can be found other than:
http://hyperarchive.lcs.mit.edu/HyperAr ... hForm.html
I cannot always get into that site (connections have been refused for the
past 2 days now), but it is by far the easiest to use of the various
mirrors that I've tried.

Subject: Unable to change certain Eudora Pro 2.1.4 settings -- Solution!
A few days ago, I complained about being unable to change various settings
in Eudora Pro; specifically, the Quote string and the Attribution line. The
solution, promptly suggested by Klaus-Peter Gores
(and by now presumably others as well), was:
>i bet your problem is due to the settings extension "Adams Plugin" in your
>eudora folder. adam's extended settings are nice, but buggy. move this file
>out of your eudora folder, restart eudora and check the settings.
Sure enough, that fixed it: the changes had in fact been registered all the
time, but only after quitting & restarting Eudora without the Adams Plugin
did they take effect. Klaus reports a version 1.0.6 of Adams Plugin is
coming (I had version 1.0.5); I have notified its author
to see if the glitch has been fixed.
Thank you, Info-Mac!

Subject: Untrashable folder
I've an apparently empty folder in the trash. FastFind tells me it conatins
11 files - it did when i last used it! If I try to delete it, I'm informed
i can't as it's in use. I have a BacUp so don't need to recover it.
It's not related to an application - it used to contain ClarisWorks files
I'd created. Until today that is - when it appeared empty.
The Norton Disk Doctor informs me that:
'A part of the disk's directory (index node#770) was found to contain some
invalid information (duplicate Downlink) 700:1801.'
I respond affirmatively when asked to fix it and I am informed that the
Catalog Tree is fixed. Yet the empty folder remains. With no duplicate that
Ii can trace using Greg's Browser, FileBuddy, etc..
If I try to move it to the Desktop a copy is created with the same
problems. I tried WipeInfo but the folder cannot be found! Volume recover
is equally unhelpful. Obviously it can just sit in the Trash forever - but
does anyone know how I may remove it???
Where do i go now?

Subject: Word 6.0 to Word Perfect Mac
Lately, I've been getting quite a few Word 6.0 documents in the mail, but I
can't find any way to read them. Is there a converter around that will
convert these files to Word Perfect Mac 3.1? I've looked every place I know
of. The Word Perfect ftp site seems to be dead.
Thanks, and I'd appreciate a cc: to "[email protected]".

Remove "Adam's Plug-In 1.0.5" !
